- Due to advancements in projector technology and growth of the gaming industry in recent years, indoor golfers now have a wide variety of 4K projector models to choose from. What was once a technology reserved for those with only the biggest budgets is now offered at a wide range of price points. With such varied pricing, though, golfers often question what specs are worth the splurge.
The 4K BenQ TK700STi sits at more than $3,000 less than the 4K BenQ LK936ST. They both are 4K, short throw and have great mounting placement flexibility with vertical and horizontal keystone, so why the massive price difference? And, will the difference matter in a golf simulator?

thanks so much for the detailed comparison, it definitely helped me with my decision of bulb vs laser.
I owned both and agree the 700STi is a great projector however the 936 has so much flexibility and adjustments I prefer it . A big difference is in the putting grids the 936 shines here. I am using a 3080 NVIDIA card with GSpro. Another small detail is the white levels. It pops off the screen with the 936 as the yardage box is crisp and white

I bought both and tried them both. The LK936ST is DEFINITELY brighter by quite a margin, and that makes it seem higher resolution as well. I think it's worth it so I returned the less expensive TK700STi. By the way, I'm using it for golf simulator, TGC 2019 with SkyTrak launch monitor.
It's a great projector, no doubt! Especially if you have some ambient light in your area, then you'll definitely want to go LK936ST. But, the TK700STi is a great value!

I'd like to see you compare the Optoma 4k400stx with the Benq TK700sti. They're both lamps, both 4k, but the optoma is a bit brighter on paper and has a shorter throw ratio so could be mounted closer to the screen as well, but costs a bit more as well. I'd be interested if the mounting distance and stated brightness makes much of a difference in actual picture quality. Or the Optoma UHD35STx which is even closer in price and similar specs.
We'll see if we can get our hands on some of those!
Honestly, for the money, I think the TK700sti is awesome.
The side by side does show the other model looks better, but not for the money imo.
If it was something like the TK700STi looks like a projector, but the LK936ST manages to make it look like you're not using a projector, fair enough. But it doesn't.

I'm not even sure if it's a good model for a golf sim or not, but it's meant to be a 4k gaming projector. Looks interesting anyway.

@@pickitupgolf276 I think the only thing that would make me question the use of the X3000 for a golf sim is the throw ratio. I have a Carl's 8x14 screen, which has a 185" viewable. When looking at the stats on Projector Central, the projector would need to be mounted 15'6" away. That is zoomed in at 1.3x. If you are hitting from 8-10ft, there may be some shadows. Not sure really, but that would be my guess.
Can you give an idea of what 12 lux means as far as ambient light? Trying to get an understanding if that's a typical room with all lights on. Lights dimmed at 50%? Full power? Or just enough light so you don't stub your toe? :)
Also, were the compares before taken in a pitch dark room?
Hi Cody, for reference we had one bank of fluorescent lights on full power in a approx. 6,500sft room. Keep in mind that the enclosure depth is 15 feet so that cuts out a lot of the light that hits the screen. It's tough to describe, which is why we used the light meter to give a reference point. As to answer you second question, the room was completely pitch black. Thanks! Hopefully this helps.

Hey Don! Sorry for the delayed response on this. We do not have our Swing Optix cameras set up in our bay with the LK936, but I'm imagining there would be some flicker because it is a laser projector.
@@carlsplace that sounds concerning. I'm 6 months away from having my new room ready to install a full system. Definitely want the most realistic I can get so leaning towards LK936 but flickering for the swing camera sounds bad. Worse than the non laser?

@@scottyoung3329 Hey Scott! Depending on what projector/cameras you end up with, there likely are settings you can change to help at least minimize the flickering. Otherwise, using a swing camera in a position where the projected image is not in the background is always an option too. Just as a note: to the naked eye, the projected image is not affected. It only flickers on the swing camera replays.
im looking at both of these.. i dont game or even have a clue how to swing a golf club... but am interested in whether you tried any of the other modes on your 936.. a lot of projectors come shipped in home theatre mode. . im looking for something I can use in a REALLY LARGE image size so brightness and resolution (4K is a must) is everything.. I use my projectors eithyer outside to projector monster size images on my house for holiday light shows (as a multimedia component).. or inside as really big computer monitors for testing systems,.. so am wondering if the 936 has any business, presentation or high brightness modes where you could take a light meter reading.. it seems hard to believe that a laser projector rated at such high brightness would come in so close in Lux to a lamp projector rated 40% less.. have you ever tested an Optoma 1090HDR laser projector? I have one of those and am interested to know how it compares so i have a reference point to go from..
Hi Christopher! Lots of great questions. We'll try to answer them to the best of our ability. Otherwise, BenQ might be able to help as well!
1. We use the 936 for large meetings in our cafe with lots of windows/ambient light on a 9'x16' screen. It works well! We also use it in a more light controlled room on a 10'x15.5' screen and it looks amazing.
2. Different picture modes include: 3D, Bright, DICOM SIM, Golf, Infographic, Presentation, sRGB, User 1, User 2, Video. We will try to get a light meter reading on these different modes and pass that along soon.
3. We were also surprised by the similarities in lux reading from the TK700STi.
4. We have not tested the Optoma GT1090HDR directly, but we did use the ZH406ST for a while. It has very similar specs to the 1090. It's a very good projector, but for our uses, the LK936 tends to be better, as it should be based on price. We no longer have the ZH406ST set up in our showroom as we are changing some things around, but you can watch this video for a better idea! czcams.com/video/i5wz0NRopkk/video.html
@@carlsplace I found the ZH406ST video.. and what isd even wilder to me is you got 180 lux out of that projector (I have the GT1090HDR_ which is a huge amount more than you got out opf the benQ LK936, were both just taken out of the box and set to a white screen source or did you select modes and tune each one before its video? my main Aim is to find a really bright short throw 4K projector.. this is all great learning from your videos!!
@@eldoradoboy Thanks for the good questions! It does seem crazy at first, but the different lux readings are all relative to where we needed to place the projectors in each video. the ZH406ST was placed much closer to the screen in that video than the LK936ST was in this video. Light brightness falls off exponentially the further the source is from the screen. This is why the reading seems to show its brighter, but if we performed another test with the ZH406ST and the LK936ST at the same distance from the screen, I'm sure the LK936 would look brighter. We tried to reset all settings on each projector to their default settings out of the box. I believe the default setting for the LK936 was Presentation at 50% brightness. You could definitely push the brightness more out of this projector. In future tests would you like us to test the brightness of each projector with all settings maxed out instead of at factory default?
@@carlsplace this is great info , I didn’t realize distance from the screen hurt brightness so much when the image sizes are equal. I always figured the image size is what killed the lux. The throw distance on the llk936 is def longer. As far as turning them up all the way I think as close to a mode for mode test is prob the most accurate. Ie if both have a presentation mode and both not in an eco mode . I know eco mode pertains more to lamps than lasers but I noticed my 1090 has a setting for it. My use case of outdoor projection on a house is a growing use but still really niche compared to gaming and golf sim. Use as a computer display is pretty common so a test with settings for say a presentation might be helpful , I really learned a lot from your videos they are great !!!
@@carlsplace decided to do some more experimenting.. I took my GT1090HDR and set the mode to "bright" which turns off eco mode.. (again I didsnt know lasers had an eco mode for the light source).. and then went to test patterns and set it to white.. so there was no veriables when it comes to the image source.. if I point the Sphere of the sekonic 478 (the light meter I just got) at the projector. I get about 275-300.. it drops back a bit as expected going to the edges of the screen. but not a lot. if I point the sphere at the screen and try to measure reflected light off of the screen surface then it drops back to 180-200.. which I expect being my durface is a gray painted wall and not any kind of good gain screen.. take it outside and project a 38 foot wide image and as expected the lux drops way off to below 75.. although running it in the bright mode from the menu of modes did make it brighter on the house. . some colors are dim but not as much as they were.. of course at 1080p the window-screen effect is big on a 35 foot wide image.. I ordered a 4k400ST projector mainly for indoors but ill prob see if its bright enough to use outside.. if I can pull it off the window screen effect will be much less with that one.. do you point the sphere of your light meter at the projector or at the screen when testing Lux?

I need to set my projector between 11-14 feet away from screen and offset from the right would the STI be able to do this
Depends on how far off center you need to mount it, but it does have both vertical and horizontal keystone, so you should be able to adjust it a decent amount!
It’s going to be on a stand pretty much in line with the gc3 so I don’t get any shadows so a fair bit to the right
@@karlosmorales32 Gotcha. So, in the test here, we have both projectors off to the right a bit, basically in line with where your GC3 would line up. So does the brightness test show the LK936 is not really putting out 5000 lumens? What mode was each projector in?
Hey Dave! From how we understand it, the lumen measurement in the projector specs is taken from closer to the lens, where as our brightness measurement is from the impact screen, which sits much further away from the projector. The LK936ST model we used in the test was slightly used, but should not have affected the brightness. And both projectors were in default settings/modes. Hope this helps!

Hi Johnny. This is a 10' high by 15.5' wide screen! The enclosure itself is then 15' deep!

Hey! Just did a quick Google search and it looks like the TK700STi might use pixel shifting. Per BenQ's website: "In order to create smooth 4K resolution images, True 4K DLP Technology utilizes high speed pixel displacement and the superimposition of pixels to produce the 8.3 million pixels seen by the viewer." @@hickorydragon8114 if you have the budget, we can't suggest the LK936 enough, but if you can't or don't want to spend that money on a projector, you can't go wrong with the TK700STi!
I also upgraded my graphics card from RTX 2060 to 3060 and WOW what a big difference. TCG 2019.

Going on to projector central, the TK700STI "estimates" say it wont be bright enough for a 16 X 9 screen mounted roughly 13'8" away. Any one have any real world of this?
I wonder what they are basing that estimate off of, because in our golf sim with a 10x15.5' screen, it performed pretty well as shown in the video!

Additionally why can't the sales reps sell me the velcro pads that come with the pro enclosure, if I am going to buy a hook and look finished screen?
@@LearyS07 Yup, in this video, the TK700STi performed quite well on our 10x15.5' screen. Note this was in a light controlled environment, so if you have lots of ambient light, it might perform differently. As for the cushions that come with the Pro Enclosures, those cushions are most successful when used with our specific Pro Enclosure design. In the past when people had tried to add the cushions to their own custom setup, they've had difficulty taking the unique connection points and incorporating them into their alternative setup. We just want to save you time and frustration!
Don’t you get blinded if you look at the laser
Hey! Per our research, looks like a laser projector would be just like a laser pointer, the sun, etc. Accidental and brief exposure will not blind you, but it's advised to not stare into the projector beam.
