  • Selecting a projector can be one of the most confusing decisions when building a golf sim. In this video I compare the performance of two very popular projects. Additionally I include 9 holes on Pebble Beach and also demonstrate the new BenQ tool for modeling your space in a 3D environment. At the end of the video, I hope I've made the process for you just a little easier!

    I can’t speak for the 820 but I have the 700STI and use it as a home theatre so that’s why I picked that one. I also agree with the ambient lighting. I need most of the lights off for the sim and for home theatre. Great video as always Mike 👍🏻

    Been looking at both these projectors for a while now and couldn't find a comparison anywhere, so I'm really glad to find this video to help me finally make my decision, I was leaning towards the 820, but as I will be using it as a home cinema too, I'm going to get the 700STI, thanks for the help and great video 👏👍

    Great video! I'm just starting my sim build and need a short throw projector due to a structural beam between the screen & hitting area. I will be ordering the 820. Thanks for the reassurance on the choice.

    Enjoy your videos! Fyi, the Benq 3D projector set up tool unfortunately didn't help me in the end. After setting up my projector according to throw ratio recommendations and using the test pattern tool, the final image was much smaller when casting from PC or tablet. Adjusting with GPU controls from my pc didn't help. Ultimately I had to remount 3 feet further away from screen. Ugh!

    Really good video. I'm happy with my 700sti. Love your setup! It looks similar to how I'm going to have mine set up. Are your screens retractable? What did you use to protect the ceiling in the middle? Looks really clean. Thanks for the content!

      @TheGolfNerd  Před 2 měsíci

      I’m afraid I don’t have any experience with that model. As far as 820, I’m not sure I understand what too short for my layout is?

  • @mpkelley20

    I would use the 700. I did not like the colors you had on the 820. Maybe you can dial them down but they looked fake, over saturated and more like a video game to me. The 700, while some of the blacks are not as defined, the coloring on it just sets it above imo. But honestly, both are great PJ's! Thank you for showing these. You have great content on your channel.
    as for movie quality, you don't have to be an expert to know that there is no way an impact screen will ever look as good as a dedicated home movie screen. Different material and usually different color as most home theater screens will use grey coloring and add stuff to increase gain on the picture. My 20 year old home theater screen on 1080P looks like 4K compared to my 1080p sim screen.

    These are the two projectors I’ve been looking at and this answered so many of my questions. Great comparison!
    Were you running the 820 in the “golf mode”? In the video, it looks like the color pallete of the 700 is much more vibrant.

    What if short throw is not an option? My current projector needs to be replaced but I have it mounted at 14 ft back. I have a 10x10 net/hitting "cage" so anything under 10 ft would not work

    • @TheGolfNerd
      @TheGolfNerd  Před měsícem

      I’m afraid this is a situation I don’t have a good answer for. Even a throw ratio of 1, is gonna need to move from the 14’ location. Maybe check out the 3d room planner and see if any of the other BenQ options would work.

    GREAT VIDEO!! During the majority of the video, the 820 seemed to me to be the better projector until the bonus 4K video comparison, the 700 was much better than the 820. I plan to use this projector as a golf simulator only running GSPRO software. Since GSPRO is 4K, i should get the 700 since it is 4K as well? The difference in that 4K bonus was very noticeable. what do you think?

    • @TheGolfNerd
      @TheGolfNerd  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I personally think the GSPro software doesn’t fully make use of 4k resolution and for a dedicated golf aim, I prefer the 820 by a long shot. It is so much brighter that it makes a big difference.
      Thank you very much for the nice comments. I’m really glad you got value out of the video!

    • @TheGolfNerd
      @TheGolfNerd  Před 3 měsíci

      @@alhaqqIndy so minimum distance is like 8’, a lot of folks use around 10’. I personally like between 11-12’ because I like not being right on top of the screen. A lot of this depends on which launch monitor you are using. If you let me know which you are using I can clarify this point.

    • @TheGolfNerd
      @TheGolfNerd  Před 23 dny +1

      I think you missed the point. The intent is to show the differences between two similarly priced options offering different very different specs. Watching this a golfer spec’ing their home aim setup can get info helping them understand how throw ratio and light sources affect the image. I’m sorry if this subtlety was not more helpful. Thanks for the comment!
