  • Soft Wash Roof Cleaning. [Best Roof Wash Method]
    Regular roof cleaning preserves the life of a roof's shingles and tiles, removing harmful algae, grime, moss. These contaminants hold extra moisture against roof shingles and roof paper.you can see this in the mornings if you look up at the roof, added moisture can cause shingles to get soft and cause roofing paper to fail, leading to water leaks.
    Regular roof washing can save you hundreds of dollars.
    Remember you clean your car and your house, why not the roof.
    Here at Drew's Roofing and Home Repair we have the experience to soft wash your roof causing no damage at all.

      The black streaks are actually called Gleocapsa Magma, not mildew. Regular laundry bleach is mixed 50/50 with water and sprayed and left per all shingle manufacturers in the US. If you are not a pro call one.

    Drew, I really enjoy you helping others by cleaning their roofing shingles for them. I especially like you letting everyone know how they can clean their roofing shingles themselves. Your a very honest hard working man and I respect you for that. Finding honest people that know what their doing today is a God send. As I have mentioned before I would really like people to know that most of American's choose very poorly when it comes to the color of their roof. They could save themselves a lot of money by simply lightening the color of their roof. Dark colors absorb heat from the sun lighter colors reflect the suns rays away from the home. In the southern states this is tremendously important in lowering outrageous power bills from having to run ACs continuously to try to cool their homes. America really needs to wake up. God Bless, Whip

      Are used to watch soft, wash roof washing videos before I did my own and nobody would tell me what their mix was. I was always frustrated at the end of the video, not knowing what to use or how to do it. All they would show was what the product did at the end. I was never so confused. So one day I just tried it myself. This is what I came up with. I figured I wanted to share with everybody what I did and how I mixed. You would not believe the roof washing people that came to my channel and told me I was giving away trade secrets. How could I do that All kinds of dumb stuff so I’m glad it helped you. Please share it with your friends share it on your Facebook share it everywhere Roof Washers do not want you to know this very easily done project.

    Hi Drew.I didn't know a thing about soft wash but thanks to you I just finished up my roof in Ocala,FL.I used a 2 gallon sprayer similar to Roundup from Smith Performance that is made for bleach and my mix was Walmart Great Value 121 oz 7.5% and 1 gallon or a little less water and 6-8 oz of Ajax hand/dish soap, so I was somewhere around 3.5 - 3.75% the whole time
    My roof wasn't nearly as bad as the ones in your videos so I got the north side on Day1 morning and a hard rain came that night and I only had to do some touchups the next day.The rest of the roof I did on Day 2 & 3 and it's just sitting there waiting on rain but you can tell it's pretty much perfect.
    Thanks for MRGA (Making Roofs Great Again)!

    CONTINUED: 8) Will bleach kill grass, yes, you're right. If you mix the cleaning solution strong enough to kill growing stuff on the roof, it's also going to be strong enough to kill organic growth on the lawn, especially when it is collected by the gutters and discharged into a small location like a downspout. As high as this downspout is, you could put small buckets to collet the runoff to protect the grass, and pour the collected bleach onto the driveway and take advantage of the leftover bleaching action to help clean, or you could dump it where that potted plant is sitting at 5:00 into the video. The root system of the bushes is not going to pull enough salt from that one spot to do any harm to the bush or plants. You should also move any potted or hanging plants away from the house. It keeps them safe, and it is fewer items to rinse. Also remove any flags. American flags, college flags, seasonal flags, etc. Most are made of bleach proof materials, but not all. Seat cushions, etc. The grass may not be dead when you leave that day, but there's a good chance there will be damage, even with a lower bleach strength (thus, less salt). You don't just rinse before and after, you also have to rinse during, multiple times. If not, you greatly increase the chances of plant damage. That information is directly from a horticulturalist, and not just my opinion. You could easily run that runoff into that white rock flowerbed if they do not want any plants growing there. The salt will kill any chance of plants growing there for some time. There are tricks to avoid the runoff going directly to that one spot, but I'll not list all those corrections. 9) Rinsing the concrete won't do much. The gutters will collect the runoff and protect the concrete. Without gutters, that becomes a pain as the runoff can easily continue to drip for 20 minutes. 10) You're seriously using Ajax? You're what's wrong with the SoftWashing roof cleaning industry. It's uneducated people like you that give the rest of us a bad name. First is your safety. Ajax contains an ammonia and mixing ammonia with bleach causes a chemical reaction that releases a LOT of toxic chlorine gas. Remember back in school learning about the yellow mustard gas the Germans used in trench warfare? The chlorine gas is heavier than air and it would settle into the trenches and force soldiers out of the trenches. This gas was created by mixing bleach and ammonia. Very bad idea. There are bleach safe alternative surfactants. The main issue for the homeowner is Ajax is a degreaser. Degreasers break down oils, grease, and other petroleum products. Guess what, asphalt is also a petroleum product. A lot of people say that using bleach on an asphalt roof will make the roof brittle. That is 100% wrong. Bleach does not harm asphalt, but people like you using degreasers will harm the asphalt roofing. Weekend warriors, or chlorine cowboys as many professionals refer to cleaners like you are what is wrong in the industry. 11) The bleach mixture is WAY too strong. You're using a 12.5% SH mix, and mixing at a 50/50 rate with water leaving you with a 6% SH mix. SoftWash Systems sells surfactants that also contain a bleach catalyst, spiking the strength of the mixture. I could get the same bleaching strength as you using only a 3.5 to 4% bleach mixture when I use the SoftWash Systems surfactant with bleach catalyst. That saves me out of pocket cost, as well as significantly reducing the amount of bleach I leave behind on the customers property. You used about 4-6 ounces of Ajax. In a 1 gallon mix, I could use 1 ounce of my surfactant, or buy the 6X concentrated strength (to save on shipping weight) and use about 6 ounces in a 50 gallon tank mix. 12) Your siphon hose is busted. Once you pump it a few times, it should continue to flow. 13) There's no science in roof cleaning? Wow, just wow, that was an ignorant statement. It may be true for you, but educated professionals know there is a TON of science in proper roof cleaning. If you'd used a little more science in your job, you'd use a bleach safe surfactant that doesn't cause a toxic chemical reaction. You'd know from the bioogy that these stains are not just mildew, and in fact, mildew is a minor compoent in the roof stains. You'd know how to better spray the roof because you'd better understand the oxidizing nature of bleach and how to spray better and use less bleach to get a faster and equal clean, and using even less bleach. Between spraying technique and proper surfactants, I could clean this roof with 1/2 to 2/3 the amount of bleach you use. 14) The bleach will not effect the RoundUp tanks. They are chemical tanks. I don't know if the rubber seals are made of Viton, but if so, they are also bleach safe. The bleach will burn out faster if stored with the Ajax in it, but if you're doing roof cleaning every day, a partially full spray bottle will be fine the following day or two. 15) Your spraying technique is absolutely wrong. You're applying in an incorrect pattern, applying in a wrong manner which will cause additional runoff, and it is taking you more time than it should. I could go into the details, but that would be a long education. Using such a low pressure pump up sprayer and gallons per minute, you shouldn't have any runoff. 16) Slippery? It may be counter-intuitive, but one your spray the roof, it should be less slippery, or if you were using the correct amount of surfactant anyway. I know it doesn't make sense, but it is true. 17) Correct! Rain is the absolute way to rinse a roof. Unless you're pumping water from a fire hydrant, residential pressure will never match the amount of water you'll get from a decent rain. Although if the rain is very mild, it will be worse because it will wash off a very concentrated amount of salt without enough water to dilute the salt, which will be bad. 18) No, you should not buy your bleach from Home Depot. A pressure washing store will have bleach that is much fresher. Depending on the time of day you arrive, the bleach may be 24-30 hours old, or a matter of hours old. This is very important as bleach is not a stable mixture. Meaning if you put 5 gallons of water into a sealed container, a year later you'll still have water. If you put 5 gallons of bleach into a similar sealed container, in a year it will look perfectly clear like normal water, and if you taste it, you'll taste salt. Bleach is nothing but salt water with an additional oxygen molecule, and about 0.2% sodium hydroxide to help stabilize the mixture so it doesn't break down as fast. Even with fresh bleach hours old, I'd not use bleach to clean a roof after it is a month old. The bleach you get at a typical store is 1-2 months old by the time is is made at a factory, bottled, labeled, shipped to the store, stored, and then put on a shelf. Per EPA guidelines, once you buy bleach at a typical store, in 2-3 months is has degraded to the point it is no longer acceptable to use for sanitizing around the house in kitchens and bathrooms, so it's definitely too low to make an effective roof cleaning product without being much slower to do the job, and leaving behind a great deal more salt because you need to use more bleach from its age. 19) The guy that sprayed the area on the roof before you came up, he over sprayed by quite a bit. I could apply better and less using a 5.5 gallon per minute (GPM) pump, and with the low flow and pressure of these RoundUp pumps, you should have much less runoff. 20) I could go into detail on why these different types of organic growth can reduce the life of an asphalt roof by as much as 50%, but that would also be pages of typing. There's not moss on this roof. There are over 13,00 species of moss, and over 13,000 species of lichen. Lichen is usually worse than moss as it grows so tightly around the granules that it will lift the granules out of the asphalt and leave bare patches. Many people will mistake this and call it damage from a hail storm, but many times it's lichen damage. These roofs around you are stained, but luckily for these homeowners, it's not reached a point where moss and lichen are causing damage. I could explain why these stains are here, but they were not a problem in older roofs (maybe in the 80's and before), but that's also a long explanation. 21) A 30 year shingle does not mean the shingle has to be replaced at 30 years. That's a common lie and sales tactic used by roofing companies. If you have a 30 year shingle, the warranty just runs out at 30 years. If the roof has been cared for with proper cleaning, a 30 year shingle can last much longer than 30 years. Think about it. If you buy a car with a 100,000 mile warranty, do you reach 100,000 miles and just throw away the car at a junk yard and buy a new car? No, you just know the warranty period has passed. You didn't mention this so I'm not saying you're wrong, but I like to spread that roofing company lie/sales tactic far and wide to save customers money. Another lie/sales tactic some shingle salesmen use is that these stains are the underlying asphalt leaching through, and that this is an issue indicating the roof needs to be replace. In my training class, a shingle salesman was getting into roof cleaning, and admitted he had no clue what these stains were, but that's how he twisted these stains to get more sales. 22) Correct, you need to protect your copper. If it has petina which many people love, bleach will cause streaks. It can discolor properly cared for and cleaned copper as well, but to a much lesser degree.

      @Shari Price > Muriatic Acid is in gallon containers and cheap. Sold at all home improvement stores but it serious stuff. Full PPE on days with no wind, suits ($12.00), nitrile gloves (Black Ones) and old rubber boots. It's main job is cleaning concrete and instruction are clear. It sounds scary but is very easy to use, fast and remarkably efficient for the dollar. Once you have gloves, old shoes & eye protection and scrub in to allow downhill drainage, it becomes at easy as painting. Some buy brushes sold at boat stores as they have 8" - 12" brush heads that once rinsed, reused over many times and multiple other house hold jobs. What makes them great, the snap in place, handles snap or screw together and a narrow scrub head concentrates more force.
      I hope this helps even though a little late. I am a CZcams viewer and never had a channel. But again, like my neighbor who has the 3" bulbs hung for the last 6 events we call Christmas, they are still there! Just waiting. Not sure about the 3 pallets of bricks in his driveway. lol.

    To extend the life of shingles for a long warranty period, they used copper sulphide embedded into the asphalt along with the colored aggregate. I don't know what they use today. But the bleach would chemically attack it unless after it becomes oxidized,
    Is non-reactive or gone.
    I am glad you pointed out wetting the greens before application.
    I did laugh about "Roundup" because one is a name brand and the other is an activity. You set them straight. Nice video & great information as bleach content varies between companies otherwise ii is coping.

The reason why I’m showing you this with a pump sprayer is this is what a homeowner can go to Lowe’s and buy. As a professional I would rather use a Devlon pump. With a Devlon pump you can put 5 gallons per minute of product on that roof you can literally finish your roof in 30 minutes. And walk away this video is only for homeowners. You can also go stronger with the bleach if your roof is real dirty. Stop scrubbing it with a broom you don’t have to do that and you’re taking life away from your Shingles. All you have to do is and you can do this with straight bleach and soap if your roof is dirty. I suggest, 3/4 of a gallon of bleach maybe even a whole gallon half a gallon of water 6 ounces of soap put it in a spray thing that you can buy at Lowe’s spray it on your roof leave it alone do not rinse it off. do not scrub it off with a broom, just let it sit there. Let the wash off.

      It can stay till it rains. No worries. It will just look dirty. I hardly ever rinsed my roofs. I recommend if you use household bleach that you use straight bleach with 6 to 8 ounces of soap, sprayed on and leave it. It will rent soft beautifully with the rain. You might have to touch it up. You might not start with your chemicals at the top. Let it work its way down.

      @deankay4434 Před rokem

      Ennelei, If you have metal gutters and have installed clip on leaf guards from a home improvement store, these cause airborne dust and dirt to discolor the fronts of gutters as seen from below. If painted to help match the house, like exterior latex is cause. Rolls of steel, now aluminum has a powder coating that is slick and this dirt rinses off during rain or hose end sprayer. This bleach solution may help but using a pressure washer maybe better. Brushing with hot soapy water maybe to best. You will have to play around to find what works on your issue. Remember, if it is exposed to good sunlight, mold has a real hard time growing. If it comes off with a brush, Dawn dish soap a little scrubbing...it's dirt. It is getting expensive to replace as I am retired and my "Uni-Corn" ran off, replacement maybe the answer. I painted my gutters 2 decades ago, but I have adult trees, some are pine with long needles. The front edge of the gutter covers allowed dirt to flow over the front and caused the same problem you have. I removed what I paid for, scrubbed using brushes with screw in handle from a marine shop and scrubs right off. I use a hose and simply walk the gutters to last a couple of years, then repeat!
      Things to add to the "Honey-Do" list!

    • @Drewsroofingandhomerepair
      @Drewsroofingandhomerepair  Před rokem +3

      Go to Lowe’s or Home Depot or Walmart I don’t care where you buy it buy some outdoor bleach. If you’re gonna wash vinyl siding I would mix 2 quarts of bleach to 6 quarts of water. 4 ounces of whatever you use for dish soap. You can spray it on and you don’t even have to rinse it off but being that it is vinyl siding I would say rinse it off after 30 minutes. Just to get the bleach off of your house Bleach if you leave it on your house for a long time it can make the vinyl brittle so anytime you do vinyl siding rinse it off if you do shingles leave it on but if you do shingles I recommend if it’s not too dirty 50-50 bleach and water 6 ounces maybe even 8 ounces of soap. And I would go on Amazon and buy a foam cannon. If you buy the foam cannon you will use half of the material
