  • Explaining some of the parts on a John Deere 345's lawn tractor FD590v Engine and showing there location. This video is meant as an aid when doing repairs so that you can find out what the parts of the engine our called and thus look them up. I had a ton of trouble learning this to work on my FD589v so I hope this will save you the headache I went through.

I've worked on several of these engines and they truly are nightmares, cool and neat because of the LC aspect, but it also creates more issues than I think necessary, and yet people hold this tractor in such high regard

I have to agree with you on that these motors are absolute pain to work on and I would not recommend buying a liquid cooled if you can possibly avoid it... Actually if you look at my channel you'll notice that I swapped over to a 214 from 1980s which is a lot more fun to work on and restore :-)

Yep, have a 345 and I've dealt with all the major issues with the Kawasaki FD590V engine. Plastic cam replacement, replaced the ignition module twice, fixed carb spraying fuel on the exhaust, leaky valve covers, surging, and finally a failed voltage regulator which cooked all the battery acid and left a huge amount of vapor in the battery which then exploded like a bomb. Other than that, a really good lawn tractor!

thanks for the comment about a dry fuel pump requiring a gravity tank to prime. part of my woes with this engine. same engine was used on kubota T1850G lawn tractors.

Think I may have the issue with the fuel pump, how exactly did you cure it with. The gravity tank

fuel pump goes bad, sprays fuel out onto the hot muffler, replacement pump has a different design, fixes the problem before your tractor catches fire

Next to the oil filler cap, to the left is another black cap. What is that for? I see it's low, and I can't tell if it's hydro fluid or what. It's a cherry 285 with a fd590v I paid $90 for from an estate sale. 336 hrs, old man used it to mow about a quarter acre all its life until he died last year and mostly pulled his little yard cart around. About what I'm gonna use it for. Its also getting a little water in the oil, head gasket or water pump. His grandson said for the way he babied it, it was in the shop often, but for 90. maybe ill put the never used snow plow and chains on

Nice engine. I didn’t know it would fit anything other than the John Deere F725.

Soooo you didn’t say what the container was behind the oil dipstick? The clear one???

And this is a tire and this is a seat that you seat on, now let’s look at the steering wheel which is used to steer the tractor. 🤦‍♂️

My 345 John deere makes a grinding noise when i turn thr steering wheel and it want lift the Deck ether , It make a grinding noice when i move the leaver under the sterning wheel to lower or raise the deck. Can you give me any idea what to check that would cause this problem. I checked the Hydrolic fluid and it was just a little low without screing the cap on.

It sounds like your problem is related to the hydraulics in some way as all the systems you named are hydraulic ones... Does the drive also have issues like will it go forward and backwards? A grinding noise could be a bad hydraulic pump but I haven't really troubleshooted this system before for that issue. Basically if you're not building hydraulic pressure the pump is probably bad or one of the valves that controls the flow of liquid. So those are the areas I would focus if some hydraulic systems work and some do not I would be looking at valves or possibly bad wiring going to valves... Unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of experience on hydraulics for John Deere's as I swapped back to a manual one...

This is the year I eliminate that water cooled electronic nightmare of an engine. It ran great for 20 years time to say goodbye.....hello Kohler air cooled

I just got a old Kohler air cooled as well they are so much less work and very reliable.
