    There’s also the liability issue - the NBA can’t tell a player he has to play through soreness, because if the player subsequently gets hurt the league is on the hook for damages. It’s the opposite of the NFL’s concussion policy, where the league is SUPPOSED to step in a keep the player FROM playing. Here they’re going to force a guy to play? No chance. Zero.

      That's what the NBA thinks, but to the players, thier job is to win championships. For teams like the Suns that know they will be in the playoffs at the end of the year, being healthy by that time is much more important than entertaining fans.

    Weird that they will make exceptions for age but not injury history. If a player like Zion or either of the Ball brothers needed to rest to prevent injuries when it is known they have a robust history of injury, why is that not an exception? They didn’t think enough about this policy before implementing it

    • @calamorta
      @calamorta Před 6 měsíci +19

      This policy is crazy as someone who grew up watching football/soccer. It's completely normal for coaches to use load management and guess what? There's no restriction because the leagues won't care if the stars rest, teams are free to reach their main goal by resting their players if that's the strategy.
      The NBA doesn't care much about the sport itself, but profit. They just want to sell the product. If it means making offense overpowered and forcing stars to play in meaningless games (LET'S BE HONEST, REGULAR SEASON IS MEANINGLESS MOST OF THE TIME), so be it. This would never happen in football.
      The NBA should reduce the amount of games so each game meant more. It's that simple and I know it would ruin statistics etc, but that's the only way of approaching this. NBA players play way too much nowadays considering how fast these 7' dudes need to be running etc. It's nonsensical to have this many games with so many injuries (it makes sense, but only profit-wise).
      This policy makes me mad. It pretty much forces coaches and teams to risk their main goal just because the league cares more about revenue than showing which team is the best.

    • @selimfirat
      @selimfirat Před 6 měsíci +3

      @@calamorta I mean, that's because football teams have to balance and prioritize trophies. You rarely get "just rest for the sake of it" type of rests. Usually it will be choosing one competition over the other. And if the team is too deep, maybe a bench or a young player wanting to get time to prove himself or get experience etc.
      NBA teams treat regular season like CL clubs treat the final group stage game after they guaranteed 1st place. If the regular season had a valued trophy, maybe that'd help but even then NBA season is just too long. Also I am not sure if adding such a trophy would fly in NBA. For soccer, the audience cares about leagues because they are their national league with its own rivalries and history. I guess winning a treble could be a thing for NBA, with mid season tournament, regular season, playoffs? Idk. It just feels weird because you play same teams for all 3, there are no lower league teams that will potentially promote up.

      How about the fact that not a single meta-analysis (or even a single fucking study) has shown that load management reduces the risk of injury. Shohei Ohtani had injury issues when he got to the MLB. He and his team (the Angels) decided to stop doing load management. When the load management stopped, the injuries stopped. The fact of the matter is that these guys are getting paid tens of millions of dollars to dribble a fucking ball. Charles Barkley got it right. If you aren't hurt, then play the damn game. If you don't want to play the game then go out and get a real job like the rest of America.

    The league is different now. While there’s less “physicality”, players are still stressed. Rather than being worried about being pummeled, players are moving more than ever, contesting a ton of 3s, switching a ton on defense, more transition opportunities, etc. I dunno what the answer is, but injuries suck. It took her out of work for a while and when she tried to get long term disability from work (where she sits at a desk for 10 hours a day) they sent her labs and imaging to an independent doctor who determined it wasn’t legitimate and she was denied disability. Not one in person physical examination by this doctor, and I thought as a medical professional myself (paramedic), that was interesting that they could make that diagnosis without ever seeing someone and physical examining them. This is going to be that same thing and the players and medical staff will be correct in defending themselves saying that these independent physicians aren’t there and shouldn’t be able to make that kind of determination just by looking at imaging, but never talking to the players themselves.

    I think the problem is the NBA is trying to make these players be available for when they only go to certain markets once a year. If its a road game and you know a player from the opposite conference is only gonna be in LA once this year, they wanted to make him available for the LA fans that PAID to come see him, they will only face the Lakers twice this year. But if he has a lingering issue with his foot that the team docs are well aware of and someone outside will look at his records and be like oh his foot is fine, he can play well, the NBA would be on the hook for anything if that player goes out and really messes something up in that foot that the team docs that are with him every day said he needed to stay off of for maybe a game or 2, it may not be something that needs a 4-6 week rest period
    I think the other issue is that the NBA even though it is only 82 games (if you don't count the play in and this mid season tournaments which is only gonna increase the chances of injuries since they are playing more games, that are not related to the postseason) but its a lot of travel and a lot of back to backs. Imagine a family in poverty saving up for years to bring one of their children to a game to watch their favourite player… then that player sits out cause their foot is sore. Pain is subjective so you can never really say but history shows us this wasn’t really an issue up until a couple years ago, and the point the sport is at now we should have the best training and rehab methods, yet stars are missing time and fans are out ✌️
    Occupational hazard, you get paid millions upon millions, figure it out.

      Who says the best training and rehab methods exist for these athletes now who have been playing more basketball in their lives than guys before and thus have a higher chance to sustain these related injuries? Its nice you try end with the punch line as occupational hazard and they get paid millions but the fucking league makes multi-BILLIONS of annual revenue every year. So of course these athletes with their union would negotiate for a price they know they could get considering its just a drop in the bucket for the league execs and owners. If it was so easy to figure out, you wouldn't have to make a shitty example about a poverty family scrounging up to buy their kid nose bleed tickets to an NBA game and get disappointed because the childs' favorite player sat out.

    you cannot expect any human to do so much of anything...especially at the highest level of sports....basketball isnt the most dangerous sport injury wise but its still a contact sport, injuries exist...also allowing for a rotating squad allows for development of new talent. i personally follow football and im of course used to seeing an ever changing squad of 11 depending on what the stakes of the match are (domestic league, donestic cup, champions league, international breaks, all these events happen concurrently one of after the other, pretty cool right?) if the nba ever wants to dominate basketball globally like Europe has done with football the fan base will have to accept that you cannot expect to see your stars play always...the trade off is that youll get to see your favorite player compete for 3-4 championships every year, all meaningful, instead of just the 1 play off trophy....in the future i could see the basketball equivalent of a champions league being something like a global championship, cause essentially the champions league winner is without a doubt the best team in the world...if your team has won the champions league they have most likely won the domestic league as well and maybe the domestic cup on certain occasions, a treble

Anthony Davis is the best case scenario where outside of two seasons with 75 games, he's always played 60 some games himself and even less later in his 12 year NBA career. The third possibility is that team Dr's are just following their orders and participating in the player resting strategy. Yes, this means they are lying and not being ethical, but Drs do this every day for financial benefit.
    Also, the league should be able call out dubious team physician claims. This is how insurance carriers deny benefits. The Dr paid by the insurance company denies claim without ever speaking to patient or patient's Dr. Unfortunately, this isn't going to happen in the NBA, bc the teams and players have the leverage and the resources to fight back.

    The policy is dumb. They did have a problem to solve, though. The NBA is a star-driven league. Many people won't turn on a game or buy a ticket if they don't think the stars will all be playing. They feel cheated when they tune in or show up and find that the stars aren't playing. The NBA needed to do something, but this isn't it.
