Victor Wembanyama is not allowed to play in back to back games and will need an updated MRI after a couple of ankle sprain injuries. I don't understand what they are doing and it could be setting a dangerous precedent for the young star.

The spurs imo are very clearly trying to very slowly get Wemby used to playing in the NBA. They don't care about this season at all. I think they're looking to slowly prepare his body by adding size and making sure his ligaments and joints progressively get stronger until he's ready to lose all restrictions
I think the main issue is that everyone is in uncharted territory with such an athletic 7'4 player.
But two things: The Spurs hired his french trainer who has work with him the season before so they have addiditional knowledge.
And the Spurs medical staff has an excellent record.
Ya ask kawhi ! Lmao
The Spurs medical staff has an excellent record? LMAO
@@CaptainBobbysagSo?It proved that no medical team can fix Kawhi's ankle during that time.
Excellent record 😂
@@Leo-nc3yx that's not the problem though. They declared Kawhi fit to play, and when he went to look for other options, other doctors told him that his ankle was not yet even healed, but the team's medical staff were rushing him back to play because the playoffs was coming. That's not an excellent record at all.
At 8:47 we see the perfect image- Wembanyama with Porzingis' face right in front. Porzingis was very similar to Victor, a physical freak with crazy skills. But Porzingis has struggled with constant injury and has missed entire seasons and has played more than 60 games only 3 times in his career. I don't blame the Spurs for being cautious, but I know caution can be frustrating to both players and fans.
I don't think they are really alike. Porzigs came to the NBA way more heavier, wasn't as athletic as Wemby and Wemby is more springy.
That's just basic physics when you're that tall. The lever effect is going to drastically increase tension on muscles and ligaments compared to a less lanky person.
Sorry but this isn't a great take. Porzingis is nothing like Wembanyama. Victor is atleast 2 inches taller, with a much bigger wing span who can cut & is athletic. Wemby is springy & has a developed shot selection already. With that being said, when you're in that 7"2 + height like they both are, yea, injuries are always going to be a concern.
@@juliannewman8720 the main difference i think between the two guys is their flexibility.
If people don't think they should be cautious and think Wemby is different they should realize Wemby has already been hurt 3 times in the last 12 months
As someone experienced with hypermobile joints, including in the ankles (if not especially), I've found often once you roll your ankle like that that much, that it gets loose (technically MORE loose), as it's been heavily stretched out. The looser it gets, the more it will begin to roll on its own when it normally wouldn't. And if you notice this, best advice is to stop playing hard for awhile. I wound up tearing my ATFL playing a game in a non-contact fashion as my foot didn't snap back after having jumped directly into the air for a rebound. I believe a part of why and how that happened is from not giving it a rest after having rolled it multiple times. Again, when it's somewhat normal to roll ankles from hypermobility, it often has zero pain.
No one wears hightops and wraps anymore. Some guys used to wear ankle braces. Now dudes hoop in loafers 🤣 So many players miss time because of ankle sprains now.
there isnt any solid evidence that hi tops increase ankle stability.
we used to wear high tops all the time in the mid 2000s but fashion has really changed since then
steph still balling because he knows to protect his ankles and screw the modern fashionistas 😂
It’s not just that they’re low tops it’s also those ridiculous soles. I would tell him he can wear pink platform shoes when he’s shopping with his boyfriend but they won’t work in games.
Facts I don't understand why dudes hoop almost exclusively in lows I just don't feel safe with my ankle exposed like that
Hey Doctor Brian also if it’s not in the works already we need a video on former WR Mike Williams. A ESPN report recently said his cause of death was determined to be a rare bacterial sepsis, cerebral abscesses and necrotizing pneumonia among other horrible sounding things. Would love to get your perspective on it.
Those aren't Dr. Sutterer's area of expertise
@@kchorman How do you know he's a doctor just because he chose to do sports injuries doesn't mean he is not well educated on other areas of medicine

short end of it was he had an infected tooth that led to a bacteria infection in his brain and he fell at a construction job and had a head injury. dude was in the nfl and had a job , if you have money take care of dental problems . my guess is he let an infected tooth go for a long time . idk if it directly caused his fall at work or if the infection happened after .
@@peterf.229Bingo. It's rare, but for sure can happen
Thanks for shining some light about what is typical in this situation from a sports medicine perspective.
Excellent Youcast, again, Dr Sutterer.
Wemby is in total agreement with Pop's decision saying his long term health is paramount.
The biggest answer to Doc'Brian's concerns is nobody knows what to anticipate or handle a specimen like Victor. Team docs and coaching are weighing HEAVILY on the side of caution. We can't fix that, but I am curious to see how his young body holds up after playing so much basketball in 2023 going into the summer Olympics in '24 and then the 24-25 NBA season.
Coach pop is probably one of if not the best Coach to develop a hype player like victor tho
Happy New Year Doctor Sutterer! This is going to be a tricky situation. I don't see the Spurs being competitive these next 2 seasons so you can totally see them being more paranoid in protecting Wemby. But they gotta let him loose so his body can adjust to the NBA.
As a future AT I spent most of my hours observing in college basketball and Brians pretty much spot on with how it should be handled. The whole perspective of treating the patient not the condition is how athletes need to be treated especially high school/college athletes where their lives arent dictated by the sport they play
I think he injured it more in practice cause he didnt have a minute restriction till like 3-4 games later, as for the Mavs injury he could’ve played but didnt on the side of caution
Happy new year
I love your videos
Doc, have you ever seen how Victor makes his stretching works? It's just amazing for a 7'4 ft guy
Another great video! Honestly, with their record, they should hold him out back-to-back. I believe he is about to turn 20. Having him watch some games and listen to his teammates and coaches a little bit and also seeing the game from a spectator’s point of view, listening to the refs, etc. will not hurt his career. Also, some injuries happen from fatigue being a factor.
He could miss out on major awards if he sits out useless games when he's not really injured vs when he actually needs to sit out
It's almost the end of the season and Doc was spot on about having "high laxity" in his ankles. He keep twisting his ankles into horrible positions, but then he just stand up and keep playing like nothing happened.
Wemby is truly an alien 👽
They just tanking. Playing him gives them a chance to win. Passing him the ball gives them a chance to win. They don't want to win. They want to get another high draft pick.
that, and it helps with Wemby's longevity in the league by avoiding unnecessary injuries from games that don't mean as much since they are tanking.
There s always a noob comment like that smh. They not tanking, they r trying, they just not good enough yet and lack talent apart from wemby
Trust me I'm far from a noob at this game of basketball, and both can be true. I think you are just naive to the business of basketball. @@gf5050
@@gf5050 Nah, they're tanking. They have had several high draft picks and did nothing with it to put a team around wemby like they should have. Everyone knows if they wanted to win they'd have traded away some of the previous years draft picks to get decent mid-level veterans in that locker room.
@@gf5050I think it’s both - they suck and they don’t really give a damn.
Spurs have always been super careful with all their stars in terms of any aggravated injuries. No matter how small. This is par for the course. They think if they can manage the little nagging injuries, then their players can have long careers.
In this case, especially because of Victor's body type, they are extra safe.
I think they ordered a 2nd MRI because they were _really_ hoping to have enough evidence to go to the NBA and sit their star player and not get penalized for tanking. The problem for Wemby is that the Spurs need to tank the rest of the year to seal their draft pick, especially with stiff competition in the form of the Pistons and the Wizards, and there's just not much value to having Wemby on the floor at that point. Also, back-to-backs are hard on everyone, even youngsters. Whether a team is tanking or in first-place, I don't fault any coach for wanting to sit their star players for at least one game in a back-to-back, especially considering how generally compressed NBA seasons have become since they expanded the playoffs formats and added an extra week for "media day bonanzas" and such.
Lack of peroneal strength to interrupt the MOI. Predisposed for more inversion sprains, IMO.
Doctor (or anyone), why can't someone devise a light brace that strictly prevents turning the ankle beyond the functional limit, without impeding normal movement?
Steph uses one of those
Ankle braces do exist. Players tend not to like them as its extra weight thus slowing them down and throwing off their mechanics
they're called ankle braces bruv and google is your friend
Can you discuss the Elijah Moore hit?
Thank you! This is the same organization that started load management for no medical reason
Doctor so in school i was asked to kneel down so idk when i got up the area under the patela was swollen and it is causing problems like runnign 😭and walking and i also dont feel comfortable standing for long periods of time what the doctor recommended that i wear a knee brace but i stiil feel the pain and the swollen part hasnt gone down and it has been 4 years since it happened what do think i should do ? btw i have seen 3 doctors they all recommended i wear abrace but it dosent seem to be doing anything.
You could argue he has a Marfan’s body habitus…. Ligamentous laxity would be a high concern for his future. Basketball players often have ATFL ligamentous injury but he’s inverting without contact…
They are trying to show how protetctive they will be over him. Kawhi and his camp tried saying they were trying to push kawhi to play when he didnt feel ready. one of the main reasons he was traded to toronto.
He has twigs for legs. Knees over toes guy on CZcams has entered the chat😂
I personally don’t think there is anything wrong with being extra cautious in year one with wemby. He has an absolutely unique body and skill set, so it’s hard to use precedent when dealing with him. I think if the spurs were even somewhat close to .500 or in contention for a playoff spot they wouldn’t have issue running him out there a full set of minutes. Their nightmare scenario would be a serious injury to wemby in a developmental year where winning is not the main priority. I’m sure they are communicating that with victor.
Its costing them games and him valuable experience
@yt_eli2643 😂😂😂 chill dude. I think that why we're not coaches in the nba and they are . They know what there doing
spurs are tanking for nikola topic to pair with wemby. that's why pop is creatively finding ways to make the tanking not so obvious.
He rolled his ankle if he can play play
@@lordkaiser1404 like telling everyone not to pass to wemby
This is definitely a result of Kawhi's injury. Spurs are being overly cautious
The Spurs don't trust the medical staff? They are overruling the medical staff in during multiple MRI's? All we heard was the medical staff from the Spurs are world class and nobody should question their competency. The doctor in the video is being too generous with the Spurs medical Staff by saying he can not find any medical reason for the MRI and so it must be coming from the organization. It's coming from the organization because they don't trust the medical staff.
Spurs medical staff was right about Kawhi injury.
@@NORMANDIEmix Right or wrong they wanted Kawhi to play in pain. Kawhi said he wanted a second opinion to make sure the injury would not get worse if he played. They told him to shut up and dribble. Eventually, he ended up tearing that ligament with the Clippers two years ago and is just now playing like new. He wanted injury rest to minimize the pain and had it with Toronto. He had injury management with the Clippers. In no way were the Spurs going to give Kawhi the type of injury management that Toronto provided. They put their foot down. They went to the press with leaks to force Kawhi into playing. They used players talking in public in order to force Kawhi into playing. They wanted Kawhi to play from day one to the last day he wore a Spurs uniform. Nobody knows the exact diagnosis that the Spus came up with but that wasn't the issue. There are two sides to the dispute on the diagnosis. It was how they handled the injury that upset Kawhi.
Back when I used to ball I rolled my ankle just like that have been the same sents but don't have millions and spurs backing me
The problem is he's 7'4" and very athletic and isn't strong yet once he add size and strengthen ankles or his whole lower body he will be fine
Doctor, you should look at his post game interviews. When he moves his right arm, he has this weird ripply effect on his bicep I've never seen anyone have, which could be related to his ligaments & how his body is developed! No one has done a video on it, I'm sure you'd get amazing views on it as well since a lot of body builders are into that stuff as well
His bicep insertions are abnormally high. It’s actually a bit hard for bodybuilders to look at. We find it repulsive.
@@Lewis-me7jr I don’t know man. It’s like that joe asthertics dude how he ripples his chest. Very similar. I would think bodybuilders would love that. It would increase their content and freak factor
Actually I went and looked at one of his post game press conferences and his bicep insertions are pretty good. It’s the only thing on his frame that doesn’t concern me.
what do you mean by bicep insertion? the biceps inserts on the same bony landmark in every body @@Lewis-me7jr
It seems like all the cushion under his shoe caused him to roll it tbh
idk if he was wearing the gt run's or gt hustles, but neither of them have good lateral support(no carbon fiber plate, so you can bend the shoe in half and twist it however you want)
Yeah the first one really looked like a shoe issue
Agreed. Those shoes are ridiculous.
Hey Doc, could you please explain what happen to the French football player Andy Delort during a match in Qatar? It was really scary
Tre jones should start as PG
Can you do tank dell?
They're so worried about him getting hurt they aren't even involving him in most plays
Wemby is like the Bismarck. He’s too valuable to risk using.
Bro I'll say this on every video I really wish the NBA or NFL would hire this guy as a consultant or something
They have a bunch of guys like him doing this
As a spurs fan...we have fallen off as an organization and we no longer know what the hellnwe are doing...and sadly it starts and ends with Pop
This reminds me of Dirk Nowitski and his 'rubber' ankles. It seems to me he would roll an ankle yearly. He would miss the rest of the game and maybe 1 or 2 more. He would still set the record for most years played for 1 team.
Would actual high tops help prevent this, or lesson its severity? Im thinking like 70s Converse height.
I think there has been mixed data over the years on high top vs low top shoes and how they relate to ankle injuries. But there is at least some data/studies that suggest high top shoes result in more injuries and less ankle stability.
@natev9022 I remember hearing about those studies, had forgotten those.
So, he needs definitely needs to strengthen his lower leg muscles and tape those suckers up like in football, lol
I have noticed Wembanyama's knees on his jump landing. He sometimes lands in valgus position, and I cringe every time I see it. I'm sure the team is managing this with appropriate neuromuscular training, and for me this is more of a long term concern than the ankle.
I had similar non-contact ankle injuries all the time when I played soccer. Still occasionally happens when I just walk around normally but it doesn't hurt any longer since there's nothing left to sprain.
i rolled the fuck outa my ankle every single high school basketball game. walked it off and kept playing. idk how basketball players got so soft and flimsy.

I couldn’t agree more. I get so tired of people just assuming that Greg Popovich and the staff are a bunch of geniuses because we were good 10 years ago. My dad’s an ER doctor, he said the same thing. There isn’t any science with the minutes restriction to prevent injury

In Germany if you have a grade 3 ankle sprain you get surgery to repair the ankle. You get ONE CHANCE to repair an ankle, if not the strength and laxity are never the same. We treat ankle sprains in America like no big deal, and kids especially are back out on their near broken ankles in a few weeks, doomed to resprain & resprain again & again.
I understand why they would be so cautious with him given how tall he is and how historically taller players are more prone to injuries
why are taller players more prone to injuries
@@InvisibleHole a combination of many factors, the most serious of which being that they have longer limbs which leads to having longer levers in their biomechanics which are more prone to injury while experiencing greater loads from the overall mass of a taller person being greater in general compared to an average sized person.
TL:DR: longer limbs equals more stability needed to hold the same weight.
Being taller usually equals greater mass.
yeah and to add I think more specifically its the loads that are placed on the joints like body mass and increased load due to gravity probably@@Andrew17B
@@InvisibleHolelike what Andrew is saying that the more tall you are, the most likely you will get injured; though small players like myself can get injured( in fact I have multiple sprain ankles and finger jams playing basketball), but taller players due to their anatomy, their biomechanics are more prone to get injured.
For example: An athlete that I trained from last year, she 6’3 who played Power forward/Center- very tall but due to her biomechanics and also her gender, she suffered an ACL injury.
She’s now a Division 1-2 or maybe 3 athelte(don’t know which division) but it took me and my fellow coaches and physical therapists and doctors to help her get back to playing the sport that she loves.
Im actually having a hard time finding good studies on injury occurrence and tall athletes but i feel like what you just mentioned feels like anecdotal evidence. Your player tearing their ACL and you saying its cuz of their gender or height is subjective. Lots of injuries are contact injuries so you could have a 7'0 tall athlete plagued with contact injuries and you cant turn around and say tall people are more likely to get injured cuz theyre tall. MOI is good for determining what body part is injured but not predicting the specific injury I believe. Maybe correlations can be made between MOI and a Tall athlete population Im not sure honestly @@josephdizon3493
i knew he would snap them legs
We all had a feeling that Poppovich would be too conservative with Wemby.
7'3 19 yr old. I wouldn't play him in any back to backs in his 1st year. Even 100% healthy.
7’ 3”? I think they’re underreporting his height when they list him at 7’ 4”. That kid is easily 7’ 6”. They’re underreporting his height because the medical history of players that size would slow down the hype train.
his body reminds me of Shawn Bradley from the Sixers , in a sad note he got hit by a car while riding a bike and is a quadriplegic now . feel bad for even if he wasn’t the best nba player
Can you breakdown what happened to Elijah Moore and why he needs to retite
Good Jaime jaques needs to win rookie of the year
They fired the ball boy
Just tape the thing and let him do single leg deadlifts or stuff like that.
brian its good and bad because they don't want him to get hurt more but its making wemby more frustrated
Should’ve reacted to Bradley Chubb’s injury but now we know it’s a torn ACL
There wasn't much to react on like the other ACL related stuff he covered already. Chubb's scream right at the end of the play basically confirmed it all.
i saw it live and was like uh oh he just tore his acl
They just need a reason to keep tanking. 😂😂
They are just using the minutes restriction as an excuse so that the NBA wont fine them for deliberately tanking
I thought the injury that triggered the minutes restriction is the one he had during the warm ups in Dallas, not the ankle roll in Houston.
Very good
Make a 125 million dollar investment that could save your business & hundreds of businesses around you and tell me you don't try to protect it
Long skinny Bigs shouldn't be diving for rebounds like that.
This is called tanking. Every team nowadays is cautious with 1st picks, but this is not only that. This is a season of him being eased into the NBA while they bank on the opportunity of another top 4 pick. Even Orlando last season really wanted to be bad, and they are quite good this season.
Finally! Somebody else sees what’s going on… Pop is about to get another lottery pick to go with Wemby, I think it’s some elite fundamental 2 guard what do you think
@TavionDefense honestly have no opinion, first because I don't know next year prospects yet, and second because Iif they get 1st pick and a guard is the 3rd or 4th best player in the draft, and the top 3 are players like Banchero or Chet, they would end up picking a center or forward even if what they need is really a 2 guard. But I think if the best player in the draft is a great PG, it's the best situation for them, Devin Vassell can fill it up but he's not a very good playmaker
I don’t blame them
Wemby sprained his ankle over 30 times in this video damn
Doc you’re overthinking this. The team is tanking.
Ive been saying it since before he was drafted but im scared that hes going to have a very short career, purely because of his size, and this absolutely could be the start
😂😂
The truth is that too many younger players are surrounded around Wemby, he would work perfect surrounded around older players. You can’t win a championship with too many younger players.
Why aren't athletes wearing better shoes? The Chuck Taylors were built for ankles but were terrible for everything else. There is a HUGE opportunity for a small company to make the perfect basketball shoe. It doesn't have to be pretty!
I think it’s a ruse. SA has to regulate his minutes because he gets so exhausted due to such poor stamina.
PS: high top shoes would help protect his ankles 🤷♂️
The Kawhi Leonard effect
Why he don’t he have a light brace he not taped up and where his high top pink shoes 😂
Boyyyyyyyyyyy you aging. this my first video in a few month BUT love the work
This is the new way of ‘resting’ players without getting jammed up by the league.
Younger athletes are reckless with their movements. Things like these don't happen in the past because athletes were more cautious with their movements..
Yes
Going to react to Elijah Moore?
With the league more strict on resting players, the spurs are using the ankle tweak as the perfect excuse to rest him, which is smart and makes perfect sense. He is not yet completely physically developed, he could basically be in ncaa, so ir makes a lot of sense to limit his minutes this year and the next.
Elijah Moore Cleveland Browns do a video about him.
They’re saving Wembi until they have a competitive and championship caliber team.
As a Spurs fan, I can sum up this video for your audience on why the Spurs are doing this. They're tanking.
Who angles their foot like that to begin with?
Do Sam LaPorta!
I'm not sports physiologists, but his shoes need to have soles that are 1mm thick at most. There's just too much torque on those 8 ft legs.
Agreed!!!
The thing is, Vic isn’t a normal dude. He’s has a team of doctors who get paid just to monitor the players. He’ll be fine
One of the foundations of medicine is to not order a test if the result won't change patient management. The sports med team HAS to have an understanding of the natural history of these injuries and have a a reasonable clinical question to be answered by the MRI. Otherwise it's a waste of time, money, radiologist liability/license risk, and shit a waste of electricity. This is pretty typical of the rest of clinical medicine in 2024 unfortunately. Just image for imaging sake and see what happens, because "why not"
-Radiologist
In this case the test can change team management, but not so much player management: If the GMS can order tests enough to find the slightest bit of evidence that Wemby has a documentable injury, that will allow them to shut Wemby down for whatever games they want through-out the season without being penalized by the NBA for tanking and sitting their star player (which the NBA now has some rules against).
@@jakestine4753 I guess it's what Brian said, there will absolutely be abnormality. That's already a given. So if they just want confirmation of what everyone already knows for some policy, then fair enough but I'll call that suboptimal medicine

Spurs just don't want to get Kawhied again 🤣
Right now every basketball fan in SA Is cramming antidepressant laced churros down their throats.
Or the team is terrible, they want their rookie and franchise player to be able to take it easy and take games off, and to do that without the NBA punishing the team they need something like an MRI to keep the NBA at bay.
do laporta please i need to know if my daddys okay

The Spurs have been known to do this. In today's medicine we have gotten smarter. That's why maybe not in the NBA or NFL but in baseball load management is important and there's definitely science behind it.
