There are through-hole resistors and surface mount resistors. Through-hole resistors have color bands on them. Resistors use a color coding system to indicate their value as well as their tolerance. Tolerance is the accuracy or margin of error of the resistor rating. This can Range anywhere from a fraction of a percent up to 20 percent. You can use the color coded resistor chart below to determine the digit multiplier or the tolerance that the color band represents.
Resistors with a single black band are zero ohm resistors. Since they have the same packages as other resistors they can easily be placed on a PCB by automated machines. They’re often used as wire simply to connect traces. Karen shows you how to figure the values of some four and five band resistors. - Věda a technologie
This is the best explanation of resistors I have come across. Thank you.
This is one I saw at RSD Academy and has proven effective for me.
Better Black
Be Brown
Ready Red
Or Orange
Your Yellow
Great Green
Big Blue
Plan Purple
Goes Gray
Wrong White
Nice one.
Good trscher
Appreciate Video clip! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Runayslarn Survival Manifestation (do a google search)? It is a smashing exclusive product for discovering how to repair your electronic items minus the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my best friend Jordan at very last got amazing success with it.
Your purple is violet here.
@@golo5000 I know right? LOL! Have you seen these intrusive people chimming in to reply my comment?
So well put together ,well done.
I'm quite color blind, so I picked up a cheap pair of component reading tweezers. They work quite well on resistors
use your ohm meter to read value of res. most are 1% or less tolerance
Love Karen's videos ! Great to see her back !
Thanks for the introduction and excellent resistance code
Wonderful video, loved it
Thanks, beautiful information. with a great presentation.
really informative video keep up the good work solid explanation and concept understood
What about the EIA-96 marked SMD resistors? Is there some trick to remembering those seemingly arbitrary values?
Best teacher ,
Many thanks you are here.
FR.
Great. Worth watching this video. Thank U very much.
Thank you girl, you made it so clear.
I can't resist your channel your so sweet., thanks so much
Hi mam I living in India this message very very useful thanks for you
Maam, thank you for the video regarding resistors, very informative. If you wouldnt mind can I ask if ' the value of a resistor in a multimeter is not within the tolerance, is it a bad resistor, although not far from the tolerance?
most res to day are from china they are high quality and cheap they read exactly what the states examp 540 ohms will test 540 exact with you meter (0% error )they come 10 to a card all values dirt cheap but very good -- just order assorted the sent you a sack full
How do you know from which side to read? Like the resistor @3:37 is fairly symmetric. Flip it over and you have a different coding pattern..any clues?
It's gold or silver on the right side, always . I think silver is safer .
@@wellusee no it's not
Wow damn u don’t know how long I been trying to get I this u make it so easy thank u so much
I bet she knows where her towel is.

Excellent episode, Karen. Do keep up the good work.
Now... if Karen's job is to help new electronics hobbyists get up to speed in an interesting an engaging way then she's doing a good job. Same for Felix and his episodes for Linux - maybe dub it down a bit more for those, like me, who find getting on with Linux really unintuitive...
...but if part of their respective jobs (as I expect) is to help viewers get up to speed so they can get more out of the 'main show', as well as develop personal skills and interest, then the 'main show' is letting them and their viewers down terribly!
Karen, please keep up the good work. But also, please, have a word with whomever is making the creative decisions for the channel because at best they are getting it wrong, while at worst I suspect there is actually no discussed plan / direction in place.
If I'm making any (hopefully helpful) sense then please look up my (hopefully constructive) criticism posted in the comments on today's 'main episode': The Shrimp of Terror.
A suggestion:
Once you've done covering the basics it may be worth a practicable project to:
-help cement what the viewer has learned
-give the viewer something newly within their grasp to achieve
-give yourself a leg-up so you don't run out of steam for the next series
In a way a part of the fun of the Ben Heck Show was watching Ben learn his craft as well as seeing the projects themselves.
So..
How about a DIY computer project at some point, if you don't feel that's a step too far?
-Not from scratch! That's too much too soon. But, maybe, one of the many self-build kits that are available
I'd suggest looking in to buying a Harlequin 128 kit (or similar) to put together on the show, especially as related builds have been featured on the 'main show' in the past.
-You, and the viewer playing along, would end up with a fully functional ZX Spectrum clone; so it would be 'useful' achievement when complete
-Being based on standard TTL logic (no mysterious ULA) it may then open the door to future shows and summary projects
-Being based on a currently well supported old system you can then tart-it-up with readily available cases / expansions / projects as a lead in to new topics and projects.
All the best. X
The panic button , sometimes known as the push button momentary switch, can't be beat as the starting point for digital electronics.
The little song we learned in the Air Force to remember the color values started out with Bad Boys, I don't think the rest is acceptable in this day and age.
I was taught that one too :-) if it's the one that ends "go without" :-)
@@crankjazz It was 'getting worried' when I was an apprentice - much the same, overall ;) !
Nice tutorial. One thing manufacturers really need though is a code for SM capacitors. It's impossible to tell what the value is without a circuit diagram or pulling it off the board and metering it. Really annoying if they end up loose in the parts storage too. No way to sort them by eye.
Very useful subject.
Thanks, Karen!
I'm also Slightly colour blind so I always check my resistor values with a multimeter before use. Thanks for the video.
The colour coding on '5-band' resistors is typically not very readable even if you aren't colour blind, so I do the same.
Thank you
Great video I will learn something the newer design resistors used to throw me off
OMG thank you so much!
Can you tell us about two bands resistors. I have one with green and orange bands. I can't understand it and can,t find a similar one in the market.
Where can i get a poster like the one behind you(The art of Resistor)? Great episodei hope more indept on transistor and voltage devider aswell :D
StigDesign1 It’s made by Vishay. You might still be able to order one from them.
Oh nice, Thank you :D
As a new learner how can we come to know that what ams do the registers carry say red then blue green and then there is a little gap and then some other color is there and it’s broad
how do I find the proper wattage?
I'm replacing two 390k ohm resistors on my guitar amp pc board. I ordered two new resistors, and when I connect them to my ohm meter to read there values the new ones read 390ohm but the ones I'm replacing read 390k ohms? why would one just read 390 and the other read 390K? color band on the new ones are, orange, white, yellow, gold. thanks
Is it possible one has an extra band? There are 4 and 5 band resistor codes. Maybe it's hard to see?
Thanks
Great !!!
Tanki you .vere vere good
How do you know from which end to start reading when the bands are evenly spaced?
Gold or silver is always last, read from where the first band is closes to the end of the resistor
How exactly do you tell the direction if the bands are even spread out?
Search for the side in the resistor which has gold or silver band and place that side downward and start from top
Merci carene
Thanks for this. Next time might want to slow down just a bit so we can catch up. Lol.
What is the color code of 680 ohms? Pls
If I make one panel board how to choose resistor value for example input 12v we need 4.5v output witch nomber of choice the resistor?please can explain me
Please can you explain me
respected madam how direction of starting reading code is determined. it's confution.
Nice one hopefully i can get a thumbs up in one of one video, i follow your channel
How do you determine watts?

Nice
How do i read a mega ohm resistor using Multimeter?
And for those of us with eyesight too terrible to read the color codes, grab the multimeter. Great system for young eyes.
tank to the guy tath does not exist that i am 12 and i have good eyes!
i mean i am 13year old i made 13 on 31 august
She was only an electrician's daughter but none of the boys could resistor!
You sad 🙄
🤣😂
Does ten-ohm resistance have continuity?
yes any res reading is continuity thru the res.
explain about 4047ic and how to work
I got assigned this vid for school
Its was good
No vulgar and offensive mnemonics for the color code?
Plenty! Electricians were always a coarse bunch ...
good class but too fast, for new to electronic.
I'm new and I taught she put so much so well in such a short time I keep returning for the charts alone . Good class though.
I have the same Velleman resistor assortment. Ran out of 10K and they are all stuffed in a big bag, takes 10 minutes to find what I'm looking for.
Also do a full episode on the TO-package system (or transistor packages in general)!
BUT HOW DO YOU TELL WHICH IS THE FIRST STRIPE?
Silver & gold mostly for tolerance
How can you tell the watts of a resistor
mostly by size. What got you started in electronics?
what value resistor black red black silver red
At 3.40 she mention a PURPLE ring. Where is PURPLE in the chart?
Someday, somehow, I will be able to share how I created a calculator with three sets of BCD counters, that adds ,subtracts , multiplies , and divides, positive, negative, and numbers with decimal points, that is expandable to any number of digits using only relay logic.
When I "liked" this episode the count was "1k". ;-))
Thanks 😊
Aslmlkm puan, apa khabar? macam mana keadaan puan ?
I never trust my eyesight nor my calculation skills... I made a jig to measure every resistor to be sure... consumes time but saves me a lot of trouble
I find that I have trouble discerning different colors on some of the cheaper resistors, especially the super tiny ones, so I too often find myself testing them anyway 😞
It's good to have the lookup tables to first pick it out of your stash. But, I agree with you, no matter how certain you got the right one by the markings, that check is worth the trouble. Sometimes you get one that is too far out of tolerance to accept in your project.
@@AirborneSurfer Good idea to invent a band reader scanner.🙄
220K 3-band? Looks "orange orange yellow/ 330K". I'm just curious, I'm a 47 old male now questioning my color skills. 3:58
well I know I'm not color blind but 2:16 those bands do look red, not brown
In a pinch, the human body can substitute for a 500ohm resistor, maybe that might make for an interesting tattoo....
nice
Brown,Black,Green and silver=1M0.

About 10 percent of men will never be able to do this, even with an infinite amount of training. We are colorblind.
BaBy RoY Get Baby Very God WIfe
The only sort of girl I ever pursued in school. Cute and SMART.
bye bye Rosie on you go bath via great western
What we really need to do is train manufacturers what these colors actually fucking look like, because I'm sick of eating parts or time metering every damn thing. 99% red, orange and brown look WAY too similar
Very past.. I cant get..
Kudos for the Video! Sorry for chiming in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you considered - Runayslarn Survival Manifestation (should be on google have a look)? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to repair your electronic items without the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my mate at last got cool success with it.
She is so 🔥 😍
Goodness I really hate this "which is three zeros" nonsense. The formula is N × 10 ^ P. Where N is the "digits" and P is the exponent (scientific notation!).
Very pretty. But when the skin is puffy under the eyes ,you need more sleep. That and don't wrinkle your forehead or the wrinkles could stay there at a younger age.
