    I use a diagram that I put together to help explain how the color
    code for 4 or 5 band resistors is read.

    Thanks, for the vid. At first, I thought that I was supposed to sum up the first three colors on the resistor and I was wondering why the values on the package were different from my 'calculations'. Now, it's all clear!

    I need a magnifier these days, for those 1/8th watt resistors which are so tiny. I also got a microscope for the SMD stuff!

    • @Electronzap
      @Electronzap  Před 3 lety

      Wattage of a resistor is mostly based on size. So I am guessing that a resistor of the same size will be just fine wattage wise. Especially if it is a higher value resistor.

      The tolerance band goes on the right. Which is easy when it is a gold band, such as the beige resistors usually have. Unfortunately the blue resistor's brown 1% tolerance band can get confusing if the first digit is also brown. Hopefully the tolerance band is spaced farther away from the other colors, but I often can't tell if it is. If you have to deal with a couple values which have mirror images of color, then you'd probably have to use a multimeter to measure them.

    What will be the value of digit and multiplier if the 3rd and 4th is gold

    • @Electronzap
      @Electronzap  Před 4 lety

      If the last band is gold (typically 4 band beige resisistors), that means it has a 5% tolerance rating. If the second to last band is gold, that means you take the number from the digits and multiply it by 0.1 to get the value in ohms.

    BUT HOW DO YOU TELL WHICH IS THE FIRST STRIPE?

    • @Electronzap
      @Electronzap  Před 2 lety +1

      If it isn't brown or gold, then it is probably the first band. If both ends are brown, hopefully the first band is closer to the other bands than the tolerance band. Unfortunately, sometimes it's hard to tell which is which if both ends are brown.

    hi can i ask if its ok to change the resistor of my LM317 voltage regulator, cu'z i lost the 1k omhs the purple one and now i have the biege but it is 1k omhs also
    is it possible?

    • @Electronzap
      @Electronzap  Před 2 měsíci

      Long as they are the same size, it doesn't matter. They will have the same resistance and wattage. The beige ones might not be quite as close to the rated value indicated by the color code, but that usually doesn't matter in most circuits.

      I could do some googling and make a guess, but I'd suggest posting that image with as much extra detail you know about where it came from to reddit. I think the subreddit I usually browse is called askelectronics or something similar. Someone will probably know that resistor pretty well and give you an accurate answer. I'm guessing that the black band has an additional meaning to it than the standard color code and tolerance.
