Vorrh by Brian Catling. Trilogy but Book 1 could work as a standalone.
The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. And to some extent Vita Nostra by Sergei and Marina Dyachenko.
NB I did not personally like Vorrh or Vita Nostra.

Chaosmage by yours truly. However, it is the third in a trilogy. It's a....sort of post apocalyptic horror thriller, in an abandoned city, on the edge of nowhere, where's there a mystery that needs investigating and there are things that go bump in the night...and the day.

Really happy to hear that you had a good time with this one.
It's interesting to hear your thoughts, because for me it was the characters that pulled me through, haha. I can totally see why their dynamic might not work that well for everyone, but it was exactly the type of light-hearted banter that I needed at the time.
The worldbuilding is indeed outstanding though. I think you will really enjoy the direction this series takes over the next two books, because they have more depth and nuance imo!
    Great review as always!!

Fantastic review, Jimmy. I read this early this year and thought I would love it. Even listening to you talk about the elements, I’m once again convinced that this is something I should love. Sadly, the characters didn’t click with me and I found some of the plotting to be a smidge too convenient. I haven’t picked up book 2, but maybe I’ll grab it when you decide to pick it up!

I loved this trilogy. Especially because of the world building and the horror elements. And I was very attached to Noon by the end of the trilogy. 😊 But I agree with you that the characters are not completely fleshed out enough. I think this was only her second trilogy, so she can still grow. 😊 I will definitely pick up her next work.

I feel the same way about the first book as you did. I really liked the world building but the characters weren't a favorite. I really liked the first book though, and then I read the second book, and didn't like it at all. I felt the characters were only there to move the plot, and weren't actually characters with motivations that made sense. The world building that I loved in the first book, wasn't in the second book. I'm trying to decide whether to read the third just to finish the trilogy or not.
