- Hi everyone! Here it is. I finished Disquiet Gods by Christopher Ruocchio last week, and today's video is my spoiler-free book review of it. This is officially my number one sci-fi or space opera series right now, up there with Red Rising Saga for me. I have no doubt this series will become a sci-fi classic in the future. I urge you to read The Sun Eater series if you love a superbly-written intricate and epic science fantasy series. It feels bittersweet to have read every book in The Sun Eater series so far. Let me know your thoughts if you have read this book and series. If you haven't, do you plan to read it someday?

Found it cause of Mike, and it’s honestly been surreal to see this blow up the way it did. So happy more people are reading it!!!
Right? Never underestimate the power of snowball effect and words of mouth! :D
It may just be recency bias, but I think Disquiet Gods is my favourite of the series so far. I love when Ruocchio really leans into the weird Lovecraftian stuff
Totally understandable. I'll try to wait a few months before deciding which one is my utmost favorite book in the series. But every book in the series is brilliant! :D
I’m halfway through DG and I can say that so far, out of all books I the series, it’s becoming my fav. I’m in tears just by thinking about some of the quotes there. It answered so many questions I had about my faith, it has really touched me like no other sci-fi book has.
“We are beasts of burden, we men. We struggle, and by that struggle are filled.”
Glad to hear that. There are so many beautiful quotes in Disquiet Gods! :D
I love these books the way you do. As someone who has been a fierce reader for 40 years, with a 25 year love of sci fi fantasy, I am blown away by how good these books are. They are amazing, everything I want out of a book.
I'm glad to hear that, Katie! It's rare to find a sci-fi series of this caliber now! Now we wait for the final book in the series! :)
This is perfect timing, my copy of Disquiet Gods arrives today! I will probably be starting it this weekend after I finish The Lies of Locke Lamora. I am beyond excited but I still have the novellas left so I’M NOT DONE! I love this series so much, it has been with me through some very difficult times and Kingdoms of Death is the first piece of media I have ever cried at. Thank you Petrik and Daniel Greene- I love these books SO much.
You're so welcome! And happy to hear you love this series. Kingdoms of Death is brutal... It's rare to feel like my heart is being chopped to pieces again now. But that book did it.
@@PetrikLeo Yeah, Kingdoms of Death got me and what was really brutal for me was I didn’t realize how much I loved that cast of characters until they were gone. I was on the train of “Sun Eater is good but not particularly great. It has great moments but nothing in my favorites” but then it hit me like Berserk did but with a little bit more hope and I just cried at the end.
Loved the review and I wholeheartedly agree! This series is worthy of re-reading and is destined for classic and greateness status! Now the wait begins for the end of the journey....
Thank you so much! May the ending be something unforgettable! 😄
I've been waiting for this review, because I wanted to admit that I am now a fan of this series.
I was struggling to get into book 1, but it caught my attention when Hadrian woke up on an unfamiliar planet, and then kept me reading when he challenged the priest to a duel to the death.
Petrik, I could hear the emotion in your voice, and I understand how you could be affected by the writing. It has me in it's grasp now too. And I chuckled out loud when you mentioned the "Ruocchano" 😂
Keep the great content coming!
Thank you so much! Glad to hear you're a fan of the series now. Yeah, Empire of Silence, even though I LOVED it, seems like it's considered the weakest by many fans of the series. :D
Disquiet Gods is my favorite of the series so far. It both catches up the lives/tribulations of characters from prior novels, advances the lore of The Quiet and sets the stage for the final confrontation.
Hear hear. Cannot wait to see how it all concludes. I don't mind the last book being the largest of the series! :D
Incredible review!!! I just finished the book and loved it, and totally agree on the first Sabratha section providing great material for the art scenes…though the competition with the later stuff will make art decisions so tough!
Your line of Ruocchio “commanded his imagination to fire at will” with the remaining story arcs was so great-you are crushing it brother, and I’m so happy you’ve been able to bring so many more eyes to this epic masterpiece of a series!!
Thank you so much, brother! Reading Ruocchio's books seems to increase my vocab somehow hahaha. The conclusion of the Sabratha section was AMAZING! :D
Great to hear that the quality continues.
It totally does! :)
Well for sure I am at the 3rd book and you guys are the reason to read it. This book series is so far the best this year and hard to imagine what can change that. From my side I will create some hype video at booktok for sure even if I just started.
Glad to hear you're enjoying this series! I'm not active on BookTok, but it would be cool to see it blow up on BookTok as well! :D
@@PetrikLeo i am not “active”, i just made 2 videos so far, this week started, but let’s see what can I achieve, right? There are a few vids about this series tho and I have the idea who I have to ping about it. As for you being active? If I were you? I would make teaser shorts of your videos there. You are on point with all the special editions and such.
Just when you thought this series couldn't possibly get even more incredible, it did.
One of my favourite parts of the series is the archaeology that happens throughout and the feeling of dread it helps to slowly create as Hadrian discovers the hidden truths of the universe.
Well said! It's crazy good. The imagination poured into this... And. SPOILER BELOW

The battle with Ushara and Chapter 40... The one where Hadrian talked with Ragama. Not to mention all the Vorgossos section. INCREDIBLE stuffs!
Hello Petrik! Congratulations for your new TBB project! I am so happy for you. Well deserved. I am also glad you found a new favorite reading experience.
Thank you so much, Maria!! :)
No idea when I'd be able to get to this series, but I will add it to my ginormous TBR :-) Sounds intriguing!
Definitely a must try, imo. I hope you'll enjoy it when you get around to it!
I've been slacking on reading but I'll catch up! Good to hear it's hype
I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did, brother! :)
Okay I’m gonna start the first one next month
Enjoy! Happy reading to you! :)
Happy reading to you!! 😊
You too, Safina!
Seek hardship is what I got personalized in this one. I've saved This must be for Shadows Upon Time.
My heartttt. Seek hardship. 🥲🥲
I finished this a couple weeks ago, and it was amazing! I might do some sun eater videos on my channel
Nice. More Sun Eater videos is always good!
I've downloaded this book and will start once I've finished book 4 of Dandelion
Good decision. Dandelion Dynasty is impeccable! :)
LES GOOOOO been WAITIN on this!!
IT'S SOOO GOOD and BONKERS!
Man maybe I need to pick Empire of Silence back up as nothing in the fantasy genre is grabbing my attention right now.
Me too. I have some great books but nothing mindblowing yet. It's annoying me. 😅
I knew you would like this one!! Even though I haven't read it yet! I'm commenting to support, but my blindfolds are still on for this series so I cant watch this video just yet 😅
I can't wait to hear your thoughts once I'm caught up though, Cheers!
Thank you so much! I finally have another 5 stars read this year. :')
Really want to read this series. Those hardback covers are gorgeous compared to the dull UK paperback edition. I couldn't get a copy, so I am going to listen to Empire of Silence on Audible.
I'm not a fan of the UK paperback or hardcover at all. I hope you will enjoy the audiobooks! :D
@PetrikLeo the narrator is okay. A little too "stiff Shakespearen monologue" for my tastes, but hopefully, I can make it through :)
@@spilchsaysstuff1427Spotify version is awesome... Great character voices.
Question for all takers: If I don’t like the 1st half of Empire of Silence, could the book/series pick up for me?My issues are with awkward prose and characterization. I want to love this.
I personally will recommend readers to read the series until they're done with Howling Dark. If by then the series hasn't captured your interest, feel free to drop the series. Many agree Howling Dark is a big step-up from Empire of Silence. :)
This must be.
Seek hardship. 🥲
I'm a little over a third of the way through this one so far....we'll see how it goes from here.
It's about to get much crazier. Enjoy!
I know I'm being childish asking this question,,,but how does it feel to experience these much stories as you read like a madman,,?How does it feel to swim in the sea of imaginative worlds?
"Now there is a request I want you to complete,,how are you so constant reader,,?how to read more even if you are a
Student?how to avoid procrastination to read more?plz can you make a video on this soon....pllllzzzzzz
Not childish at all. I don't think I read this series like madman though. I read one Sun Eater book per month hahaha. But it's an incredible experience. As for tips on how to read more... I have a video about it. Search it on my YT channel! :)
Hi can i know where i can find Disquiet gods paperback version? I cant find it anywhere. The hardcover is really expensive for me
I don't think the paperback is available yet!
I will start reading it when they make more hardcovers
Broken Binding edition coming this year!
Saldy its not much art from the Sun Eater out... can you tell me what the artwork at 7:23 shows in the books.
Yeah... Not yet! I keep having to use the already available artwork. The Broken Binding, Diamond, and Anderida edition will make more illustrations for Sun Eater appear, though. The artwork you asked is from the soon-to-be-released Broken Binding edition of Sun Eater. Me and Chris are behind the art direction of that illustration.
@@PetrikLeo I hope some stuff gonna be also online.. so i can make me a good wallpaper :)
what your opinion on fantasy blending with sci fi?
Love it. Wish there's more of it. 😃
Every time I hear about The Suneater I'm convinced I will probably pick up book one sooner rather than later...😂😂😂😂 all your fault!!!
DO IT AMY! DO IT!
@@PetrikLeo see! Your fault... I've begun The Will of the Many... also your fault!
Peeeeeetrik
Zeeeennnn!
I'm not here to watch this, just to let you know you've won - I'll read this guy's books sometime in the near future 😂
YAYYY I did it!!
For me, Disquiet Gods was my least favorite book in the series, Demon in White being the best followed by Empire of Silence and Ashes of Man
Oh that is an interesting ranking! Happy to hear Demon in White as your top, though! Didn't expect Empire of Silence on the second spot!
Sadly, for me this was the weakest novel in the series. It felt as tired as Hadrian at this point, unfortunately. So much potential, so many cheap shortcuts. In several cases it felt like a betrayal of the promises presented in ‘Demon in White’. Instead of building up on the previous books, the author takes a lazy approach when resolving some pending questions.
The treatment of the side characters was also rather disappointing - at first their inclusion made me excited, but every single one of them turned out to be inexcusably underused. Why tell and not show?
Hopefully, some of them will get their chance to shine in the last book. E.g. Cassandra - I also read all short stories that served as prequels to ‘Disquiet Gods’ and I couldn’t wait to see her in action in this novel. What I got, however, was an underwhelming side character mostly just standing somewhere around. And how a certain princess was written off in a strange flashforward…? I don’t understand some decision Christopher Ruocchio made :(
Hey, that's fair! Although I disagree with some things you said, but I, too, would love more of Cassandra. And Jadd. I have faith there will be more to her in Shadows Upon Time, though. She certainly earned a spot in our hearts through the short stories, and I think that's why we felt that way about Cassandra. As for the rest, I think Edoauard, Ramanthanu, are utilized properly. Cannot wait to see more of Olorin, too! Feels like Shadows Upon Time will have to be the biggest of the series! :D
Selene wasn't written out. He set up a piece of her future, like he always does.
