Juolevi Pulju and Laine were amazing for Finland in the 2016 wjc, i think thats why scouts thought so highly of them
Well then scouts clearly need to stop weighting tournament play so heavily
@@MrTheWanz I hope that's not going to be a problem with Slafkovsky
Even at the time, I thought that the real MVP of that team was Aho, even though Pulju and Laine got all the hype. That's understandable as it was their draft year and Aho had already been drafted, but I still think too many people bought into that hype rather than actually watching the games.
Aho and Rantanen drove the bus for that team. Laine was really good too. Hintz was solid
@@JHockeyFanantanen as the captain too. Edit: idk how i missed that u mentioned him i need to get some sleep
Your live reaction to it said it all lol you knew that was the wrong pick.
Quinn Hughes falling to 7 was the hockey gods throwing the Canucks a bone for the debacle that was Juolevi.
Cant think of a franchsie that deserved it less
@@MrTheWanz shut up
One thing that was weird was that Ken Holland was talking up Hughes all week then drafted Zadina
@@MrTheWanzgoof
I remember me and my die hard Canucks fan grandpa, who has watched the team since 1970. Watching that draft we both ended up miserable to be around for the next month or so 😂😂 Benny is one of our all time favourite GMs to rip on so many bone head moves.
What a draft that was for Finland. Too bad none of the top picks panned out like envisioned. Let's hope Laine finally shows all his potential next year.
Thats my favorite WJC team All their games were exciting
@@TheBoyer19Tbh that 2016 WJC team was probably the best team Finland has formed in their U20 history. -96,-97,-98 born players have brought so much joy for the Finnish people and will continue to do so.
Laine has already panned out quite nicely. People just don't know it yet, because hardly anyone cares about Columbus.
@@Accountti the 2018 teams defense looked stacked on paper
Heiskanen, Salo, Valimaki, Juolevi, Vaakanainen and Jokiharju
@@TheBoyer19 That team was amazing. My personal favourite WJC team however has to be team Finland 2014 that won gold. It included:
-Teräväinen as the captain and the tournament scoring leader.
-Lindell the scorer of the first goal in the final (I think it was in the second minute of the game).
-Saros and Husso as a backup in net. -Lehkonen.
-Also Ristolainen who joined the team mid tournament and had a difficult start. In the end he was the one to score the gold winning goal in OT. I still get chills.
The Canucks had serious issues with player development under Benning. Outside of players developing in Sweden and the US College system, things did not go well. In the case of Juolevi, other than being crippled by injuries, it's a cautionary tale of how European players get a draft ranking boost from international tournaments that doesn't translate into NHL performance. There's a difference between playing for your country and for the Money League in another country.
The Canucks haven’t drafted a non first round CHLer who played 200 games for the Canucks since Matt Cooke in 1997 IIRC. I know CHL bust rate is quite high especially outside of the 1st round, but still, you’d think you’d hit a bit more
@@JHockeyFan to me, it felt like Benning was trying a work around to basically admitting development was not a strong point for Vancouver, by getting someone else to handle it for their top picks. I'm hoping that things have changed for their farm team for the last year or so, but time will tell and it's hard to develop players if you're trading away too many draft picks.
Bull....shit. Every expert and their dog thinks there's some magic to player development
Ill forever remember watching the 2016 draft and screaming at the tv that the canucks didnt take Tkachuk
I did the exact same thing, friend.
As a Canadiens fan, I can see history repeating itself with Reinbacher going ahead of Leonard. But staying positive
"we fixed it. No you didn't" lol
That made me chuckle
I feel bad for how we talk about Juolevi. He was a reach at 6, and injuries and covid got the better of him. If he weren't taken right before Matthew Tkachuk, and his career hadn't been riddled with injuries, we'd likely be singing a completely different tune about OJ. I remember watching him with the Canucks and always being impressed with his decision making. He just couldn't keep up.
Within time he'll be the answer to a trivia question.
"Who was drafted 1 spot before Matthew Tkachuk?"
@@kfnwuwbw9s I was moreso referring to the fact that his name won't get as much recognition as the years pass. He'll fade away like Gilbert Brule, and as such, he'll be mostly memorable as an answer to a trivia question rather than being remembered as a hockey player.
His mere name sparks fear and cold sweat among us Canucks fans😂
Jim Bennings ‘reign of error’ legacy with Vancouver is infamous. Thank goodness they got Quinn Hughes 2 years later
DeBrincat in the second round was the biggest steal of the draft.
Carter Hart, Adam Fox, Jesper Bratt were good steaks as well
Kyrou dropping too
@@IHateMyAccountName Kyrou had 51 points in 65 games in his draft year. No one expected him to go high in the 1st round. His D+1 explosion to 94 points in 66 games was his coming out party.
Your 2016 draft live react was how I found you! One of your first 60 or so subs!
Zboril had the video game additction. He confirmed it in a Czech publication interview
Sensational prospect at the time of draft and in his draft +1 seasons. Dominant 2-way game, decedent toolset. Where it went wrong was sending him to Turku where he played behind 4 veteran 30+ year olds and got zero ice time. And then when he came back to North America and had basically not got to play any hockey in Finland he struggled, and they gave up on him
Ooof. Didn't think I'd see this video but I'm here for it
Great point about what could’ve been in those 2020 playoffs if we had Tkachuk. Especially after seeing what he did for Florida.
This video is a great reminder that high draft picks aren’t the guarantee that everything’s gonna be fine with those guys. Won’t be surprised if 3-4 guys from the top 10 of ‘23 class will become busts/underachievers
Nice analysis.
any chance we can get a full video on Nolan Patricks career so far now that he's a UFA? I always wanted him to succeed but he had horrible injury luck.
In fairness, Tkachuk would have wanted to bolt like he did from Calgary. And as well as the Flames did in that trade, they’re now stuck with a Miller style contract and a half decent defenseman. Better than what the Canucks got for Juolevi? Absolutely. But there’s no guarantee the Canucks would have even gotten that deal, and chances are, he walks to UFA status and bolts anyway. He clearly wanted to play in the US. When Juolevi was picked, it was absolutely reaching, but he prototyped as a top 4 2 way defenseman and much of his problems stemmed from injury and getting a terrible case of COVID. Once that happened, his lungs were done. Just ask Sutter how that works. You can’t train if you can’t catch your breath.
I’ll never forget hearing Benning say in an interview before the draft, “yeah, we’re going to get a real good defenceman…”
I was like, are you kidding me, Benning?!?! What happened to BPA?!?! 🤦🏻♂️
I knew we were doomed that draft and go figure.
I liked Juolevi’s game. He rarely gave away the puck and was a good passer. He had vision, but limited foot speed. I think I could see what he was supposed to be.
True Canucks fan to have a board of Juolevi up a whole week to reflect and lament
I remember vividly watching the draft with my dad and us letting loose Darth Vader, Episode III, "Noooooooooo!"s When Juolevi was drafted over Tkachuk who we thought was clearly the better player. Hindsight wasn't 20/20, it was 20/10 in this circumstance and the Canucks clearly drafted for position...Which they just did last week.
Willander initially seems like a reach, but he's considered to have a pretty high floor and personally scouted by the Sedins, where Finnish scouts were shaky at best 7 years ago. I don't see Willander being the next Hedman, but he'll be a decent top 4.
Along with the not going to hyperspace you gotta add Han Solo/Vancouver saying, it's not my fault...
The noise was good, knew exactly where you were going.
Having TACHUCK would mentor Hughes buddies would be great the years of the fins jolevii supposed be stud Defenseman but never lived up to his expectations
I know Juolevi turned out to be pretty much a complete flop but at the time he was highly touted and Brian Burke even said that if the Canucks drafted Tkachuk at 5, Flames would've taken Juolevi at 6. And I believe he likely is very high on most teams' draft list and he likely goes top 10 if not top 15 had the Canucks/Calgary not pick him at 5 or 6.
Problem is that his stats were likely inflated due to playing on one of the most stacked Major Junior team in Canadian history of that 2015-16 London Knights; and he was also on a historically stacked Finnish WJC team. In hindsight, he was probably a product of those stacked teams, but at the time he was highly touted as the best defenseman on both London Knights and Finnish WJC.
He didn't imporve much interms of his play at his D+1 year and then he just struggles to get healthy year after year. In the 2020-21 season, during the COVID division year, he finally made the team as more of a depth defenseman and unfortunately he was one of the players that got hit hard with the COVID outbreak.
We would never know what his development would be like if he didn't suffer injuries after injuries during his key development years. He likely wasn't going to live up to his draft status, but he could probably have developed into a regular NHLer. In hindsight, this is an absolutely awful pick at #5, but at the end of the day, these draft blunders happens to all teams.
I am personally more pissed off on the fact that Jim Benning choose to disregard the words from his scouting staff (who warned him about Juolevi) and choose to go with him after only watching him for a handful of games at the WJC. You have got to trust your scouting staff who watched thousands of games a season instead of going with your gut after a handful of WJC game.
It's easy to play well on a good team
Feels like 100 years
Tkachuk and Pastrnak... my favourite two missed draft picks for the Canucks. Their names are difficult to spell.
This draft wasn't good for Buffalo. Everyone wanted them to take Sergachev, but they took the other, less notable Nylander.
When Juolevi had that collapse in practise he had long covid sumptoms. He was interview lately in here Finland about his early career.
Markus Nutivaara retired this season as he refused to enter the rollercoaster of playing under painkillers. Maybe same future for Juolevi?
I also remember that 2016 draft didn’t have a lock of a Best dman in the class heading into it. The talk was between Chychrun, Sergachev, Juolevi. So nobody really knew who’d be the first dman off the board.
Chychrun ended up falling which was one of the bigger surprises of the draft. Sergachev would’ve been a better pick for the Canucks, but obviously not better than Matt Tkachuk. Lastly, 2016 draft has 2 of the top 5 dmen in the NHL today in Adam Fox and Charlie McAvoy
From the 2016-2020 drafts, every defenseman selected in the top 10 are regulars in the NHL today.
The only one who isn’t is Olli Juolevi. However, Phillip Broberg could be added to the list depending on how things shake out. But it’s looking likely that he is an NHL dman…
Do a breakdown on how important and franchise altering the Canuck’s signing blueger is- from a pens fan :(
Imagine if we had Sergachev, Chychrun or McAvoy instead of him
This organization never would have developed any of them.
Omg I forgot all about the video game addiction thing lmao
It was Zboril who was addicted to video games
I remembered booing this pick when it was announced and thinking it was going to be the only major draft bust in the top 10 years later. Well here we are and both picks 4,5 are UFAs in 2023.
Yeah, I remember that he was rated highly. I think that Benning made a disputable, but not illogical, choice. Injuries happen.
With 20/20 hindsight, the Leafs did the right thing who took Matthews, but every other team that got the chance should have taken Tkachuk.
The Millenium Canucks - they made the Kessel Run in 5 hotdogs
I feel a bit nervous about Tom Willander meeting his expectations, especially if Zach Benson turns out to be a bigger steal at 13th overall.
Nobody will care, if they win with Willander. All that matters is team results. Many players put up points and win nothing. Mike Gartner was fast and scored 20-30 goals every year without fail. But he has 0 Cup rings. Team results are what matters. If Benson scores 30-40 goals, good for him. The Canucks have 2 guys who can do that and they missed the playoffs.
Benson is no Tkachuk
Benson is Schroeder/Shinkeruk/Zadina 4.0
Bratt at #162. Insane steal
The kid was addicted to god dang video games!
He never stood a chance from the start!
Juolevi wasn't the Canucks prospect addicted to video games, that prospect was never identified. He had multiple major injuries early in his career that derailed his development.
Juolevi and Pulju peaked in WJC and after that both just became busts.
I heared people at one time if I remember correctly calling him the second comming of Lumme... Boy was that person wrong.
Do one on Tryampkin 😢
Okay now I want the cats or bunnies sitting in the cat posts
Pushing buttons like grogu, pushing no or yes buttons
Except one button will be the Millennium Falcon, faltering sound😅
joulevi never coughed up pucks like Myers and has the same amount of offense and got paid 5.5 mill less than Myers..he was and still is better than the gentle giraffe.
Shannon, I choose not to dwell on these tragic times.
So if the draft happens today do you take Tkachuk first over Matthews?
Right now, no. Both are very talented players, but Matthews was fired out of a cannon day 1, Tkachuk had to develop a bit.
Aside from the topic had an interesting thought some time ago: Who is the best right-handed D-man in Finnish hockey at this moment? I personally had a tough time to think a quality player on that position
Teppo Numminen
@@raourotsukodoji3790
Sorry, meant active player
Jani Hakanpaa. Maybe Ristolainen if he somehow manages to reinvent himself.
Lol Shannon why are you doing this to yourself? Looking forward to a Virtanen video soon
As a Flames fan watching the draft, when the Canucks didn't take Tkachuk I went, "Hooray!" Well, they got 5 good years out of Tkachuk anyway.
Of course Pronman had Laine at 1
Hey at least he had Keller in the top 6
Do Jake Virtanen again 🤣
But shout benning for drafting ep 40
If we took Tkachuk we wouldn’t have gotten Hughes.
That's really an unfortunate story
So the biggest problem is Green, not a good coach to develop our important 1st round prospects. Fire him is one of the best decisions in Canucks history 😊
Interesting future video topic imo, is who should Winnipeg have taken with perfect hindsight looking back at how both Laine and Dubois worked out for us? You add in Tkachuk bolting for America, and how both Puljarivi and Juolevi's careers have gone...
I think the best bet was probably Tkachuk, and you try to play up his dad being in winnipeg until the franchise moved, the business with his dad losing the C in 1.0 being something that we'd like to correct this time around etc... You play up the connection to the city, but you also playup the fact this is 2.0, and we do things differently, and loyalty and integrity are actually extremely important to this organization... at times it's almost to a fault when you look at Vegas winning the cup this year...
But idk if that would have worked... I still think he bolts out, but there are rumors that say Tkachuk was willing to lock up for 7/8 years in Calgary prior, and management dropped that ball... And I don't think Cheveldayoff in Winnipeg would have missed that opportunity to do so with his 2nd overall pick here... Especially in Winnipeg...The issue was both Laine and Dubois being Laine and Dubois...
There's an argument to be made that Puljarivi could have been the best pick for Winnipeg without having to go almost entirely off the board, going with 7th/8th ranked players and back... And at that point, they should likely just try and trade the pick, and drop down in the first round... Looking back, this is a rough top 10 for most teams below Toronto, but Winnipeg was likely having issues with any one of their potential picks if it wasn't Laine...
Forgot about adding Clayton Keller to this mix... That would be an interesting selection looking back... But one I think they'd receive too much heat to seriously consider, where as basically everyone had Tkachuk and Puljarivi as top 10 picks, and hence I think totally reasonable selections that don't get a ton of heat for leaving Laine on the board.
They all look nervous and/or concerned, as if they know things won’t end well.
I’ll make the argument as to why picking Juolevi was the right move:
If Vancouver got Tkachuk, he would have made an impact sooner, probably as early as 2016-17. That would have probably made the Canucks better, and the team would have won more games, missing out on drafting Pettersson in 2017 and Hughes in 2018.
Say Florida does the same trade as the one they did with Calgary for Tkachuk in 2022. Would you rather have an older Huberdeau & Weegar, or the young duo of Pettersson & Hughes? Exactly.
SURE you can say that after the fact.
@@brownboy2340 Of course, it’s just a fun exercise. I wish I had a time machine xD
@@LSA30 LOL devils advocate role for Benning
We probably still would have got Pettersson because he was ranked lower and we reached for him. We probably wouldn't have got Hughes tho as he fell to us in the draft. I would say only Hughes was drafted best player available.
still cant believe TKachuk dropped to 5th
he was drafted in the wrong round
I mean....If we take Tkachuk instead of Juolevi, are we bad enough to draft Pettersson next season?
Vancouver's luck, he'd get hurt, then draft Nolan Patrick.
Probably. Tkachuk would have gotten maybe 40-50 points for us, which might move us down a couple spots in the draft, but Petey likely would have still been there when we drafted. The question is would Jimbo have wanted to draft another forward in 2017 if he drafted Tkachuk in 2016?
They f uped again the could have taken Zach Benson at 11 but they took a swede again who knows when he be able to be ready to play
This is exactly why you always draft best player available and not for need. And when people try and defend BEnning's drafting, this is a MASSIVE miss on the draft
I wonder how many 24-27 year old busts are out there that would take off with another shot. I'd give him a shot if I wasn't a contender. See if he sticks and if he isn't a fit maybe he is a deadline deal.
horrible pick. Thanks Benning.
It was a okay pick, it's the injuries nothing else
Matthew Tkachuk and Clayton Keller went right after him.
I remember the draft when Benning said, "...from the London Knights..." and I started cheering.
"...Olli Juolevi." I just went silent.
Hindsight is 20/20 but even at the time I knew it was a bad pick.
@@fbsiubvsitdhdhjukI spoke out loud with benning and when I said tkachuk my jaw dropped. Even though the injuries did him in I’ll still say…. Damn benning
We had Salo train him he never stood a chance with injuries
As dumb as it sounds I had reservations on Mathew. But I still would have taken him anyday over Olli. I knew Olli had problems but not that many and the scouts should have picked up on that.
He would not have had meaningful minutes when he played because Vancouvers defence then was suspect. Hard to develope properly when the defense is subpar. Unless you are the exception. Again though missing out on toughness. He may have been good but even he was a bit soft. Vancouver likes pastry puffs. I had kept waiting for them to draft more physical players with size. Playoff teams have a average size of about 6-2 205 pounds.Vancouver is like 6.0 and 185 pounds. Maybe 188-190 but still light.
That rumour of him being a video game addict is just a cherry on top of the “complete botch” the Canucks did that day.
Wasn't him though, it was Zboril
This one is going to be stinging the Canucks organization for quite some time :'(
Trading the pick that became Dylan Guenther will be just as bad.
Look at Juulsen. Terrible luck when it came to injuries. Getting hit twice on the head in one game.. then developing headaches after which took him out of the game for a year.
I think the comparisons of Willander to Juolevi are lazy. Willander is going to a great NCAA program and will be playing with Huston. He should do fine.
Bowen Byram has early-on injuries, why is he still seen as a bonafide top 4 dman unlike Juoelvi? Stop.
Low hockey iq comment.
are u serious, byram was a key guy in their cup run and has played many more games than olli
Benning was an absolute joke of a GM. A guy off the street would know to pick Tkachuk.
Well he got Pettersson the year after and Quinn Hughes 2 years after that, 2 homerun picks, I wouldnt blame this pick that much you cant predict injuries but yeah overall he was a bad gm for the Canucks.
@@bluedevil7250 Hughes was more Detroit's screw up than anything.
The trouble with being cynical is that it lumps together 9 years of Benning with the current regime, which has had exactly 2 drafts. Look, I've been a Canucks fan since 1970, but I don't live in anger.
This current regime signed Miller to 8x8 and then was trying to get rid of him the next trade window. Traded the pick that became Sandin-Pelikka for Hronek and then was startled when it had no cap space and was forced to buyout Oel (1 year earlier than they should've). Sold off Horvat instantly but hasnt managed to peddle Boeser, Garland, Myers, Beau, Miller, Mikheyev...
If not for Milbury Benning is up there as the worst gm.
Not a very strong showing for Canadian teams. Five Canadian teams and CBJ drafting in top6 and Columbus is the one who has managed their assets the best. Two Canadian teams have completely busted, two have downgraded a lot and one might lose their overpaid 1OA pick as soon as next summer for absolutely nothing. I wonder if anything would've been different had all of these players been drafted somewhere else.
Why does this look like something that will happen with Reinbacher and Michkov.... Like seriously, this looks eerily similar
Anyone with a brain knew they f*cked up bad by passing on Tkachuk. I remember vividly knowing Vancouver screwed themselves soooo bad. I mean Tkachuk is a game changer, Pettersson nor Hughes will EVER become as good as him.
Ka m m m m
the fact that bag skates are still a thing shows that the NHL and NHLPA are a joke.
If you got Tkachumpky you would have to look at that smug and puntchaccble face every game. Would you really want that? I don't think so.
pronman was always a smug joke. he doesnt deserve to be thrown in among names like Mckeens, hockey news etc
Horrendous pick. Clearly had his stats inflated on the Knights/Finnish WJC teams.
Biggest bust in nhl history
This was Benning's largest mistake. Oh wait Jake Virtanen, oh wait not re-signing Tanev, oh wait losing Tanev for nothing. Ok Jim Benning sucks and is the worst GM in Canucks history.
Please less canucks videos… this team is so uninteresting
Juolevi played for Florida and Detroit as well. It's about the player more than the team. This is the SECOND video I have made that could be argued Canucks centered since the end of April.
