It seems a lot of people have been offended by my comments relating to Poland and its people, so I would like to formally apologise to anyone who was unfortunate enough to be born there.
Just kidding, you Poles are alright.
u just met allah bro ?
No
My god, absolutely destroyed
I just got to that part and was deeply offended :(
What makes Elmaxo's editing so satisfying is the sound design underneath all the animations. It takes way longer to edit like that but it's sooooo nice
exactly, the animations are smooth but the sound effects are what sell it so well
My critique with his sound design is he keeps using the meat sound effect for the words, I might just have meat in my eardrum and not notice it.
He makes good content though.
We call that somebody cares about there vıds
140 at point blank is part of the reason the Direct Hit is also known as "the best melee weapon in the game".

Honestly, sometimes, that’s EXACTLY how I use it.
I love jumping at people and rocket jumping off them.
It’s surprisingly powerful.
Sometimes I feel like it’s what the Sandman was SUPPOSED to be.
Honestly, the deploy speed on the reserve shooter is very nice if you miss all your direct hit rockets. And sure, you only have 3 shots with the reserve shooter, but if you miss those too, you kind of deserve a free ride back to spawn.
it's 4
@@trevorchabot864 My bad. It used to be 3 when it would minicrit any airborn target.
I mean .... Missing point blank shotgun shots isnt hard
...the panic attack also has a deploy speed bonus except it has 6 shots which also do more damage than stock
don't forget that shotguns also have damage falloff
Fun fact: when a pyro airblasts a direct hit rocket, the splash radius becomes the same as a stock rocket
Oh shiet. I'm gonna go break a direct hit soldier in two now. With pyro.
well thats just broken
New strat: play pyro, have a friend with DH on the enemy team and coordinate reflects
it WHAT
@@cloud__zero airblast resets the blast radius of projectiles to default, which is exactly the size of stock rocket blast.
The same also applies to pipes, but not to stickies.
The only thing I can objectively say this thing is worse at than stock if you haven't been diagnosed with the dreaded "skill issue" condition is crowd control. A smaller blast radius means you're going to be hitting less people at once, and therefore not being able to take on multiple people as effectively as stock.
instance 4498 found terminate on site immediately.
As a D.H user myself, this is 110% true. D.H can not, what so ever, deal with crowds. it premotes 1v1 fighting and i hear some one saying "Oh tHe eXtRa RoCkEt sPeEd iS A CrUcH" ya i hear your ass back there! no it's not. *-70% explosion* it's a HUGE downside.
Yet, you see people running Direct Hit in MvM and firing at the bots' hoardes.. smh
@@TheMacco26 you can instantly reload the rockets there, also that you can upgrade the range of the splash damage
@@TheDJBrojo You can also buy more damage and firing speed for stock launcher, though. I think starting with DH isn't good in that game mode. But to each their own, if they have fun with DH it's ok.
You underestimate The Reserve Shooter. At 17:30 and 17:41 you would have killed the Pyros much quicker had you been using it. Because the Direct Hit has such a small blast radius, you'll be hitting enemies much closer to the center of their feet, meaning they will naturally be launched more vertically than horizontally. Everything else you said was on point though, and I've noticed significantly more Direct Hit soldiers in my lobbies ever since this dropped.
feet 😊
@@TallTapper always that one guy
Yep, I use the Reserve Shooter because of the faster switch speed and the mini-crit damage is a nice touch.
I think there's a reasonably strong argument to pair the direct hit with the reserve shooter. If you do pop up a light class, which is easier to do with the high projectile speed, using one clip of your shotgun to finish them off instead of your rocket launcher is ideal on paper, since it leaves you better off in terms of shots loaded into your stronger weapon and one means of rocket jumping.
And it gives you a way to finish people off that you pop up from a long way away, because they're going ro hit the ground before a second rocket hits them, and a shotgun without the minicrits from the Reserve Shooter is gonna have brutal falloff. It's insanely useful if you're having to play from far away due to the other team having a good hold or whatever.
Exactly my thoughts. Idk why he hates the gun so much
one normal shotgun shot will do that in almost any situation where using a shotgun is viable because you only need to deal like 10-20 damage
@@universe8607 minicrits negating damage falloff makes it so you can do 16-24 damage even when only 2-3 out of 10 pellets hit from any range.
That means that you can use it at ranges where trying to land an airshot would be the hardest, unlike the normal shotgun.
@@KLIXORthe I just don't think that the need to finish off an enemy that is far away AND airborne happens often enough to justify picking a sidearm that is worse than default shotgun in almost every other aspect or situation
14:44, when they first released the DH, it DID work like this--ANY jump would make you vulnerable to a mini crit
That was a bug
It was pretty awesome ngl
Oh the gold ole days
Dear God.....
sometimes even walking on stairs would make you "airborne"
Reserve shooter is actually a solid option when you consider you get the faster switch speed without the lower damage of the panic attack at longer ranges for the small tradeoff of 2 bullets. Plus airshots are still an option because you prolly did a decent chunk of their health with the first shot and not using another whole rocket on them helps sustainability in the longer fights.
6:20 the nicest way I’ve ever seen someone say KYS
one of my most fond memories of the direct hit is the enemy soldier popping me into the air with it and having a complete checkmate on me only for me to just go "no" and reflect his random crit rocket back at him killing him instantly

14:36 -- Y'know the Direct Hit *used* to mini-crit people being airborne for ANY reason. If you were so much as going down a flight of stairs, you would get mini-crit. In very little time at all, people learned never to jump when somebody was using the Direct Hit. Which only made things worse because grounded people are easier to hit by everyone, not just Soldiers. It didn't take long for Valve to patch that out but man, was it a weird time watching entire servers cease to jump.
Sounds like the old reserve shooter.
did it also apply to going up stairs?
Firing at scouts harassing your teammates after you just respawned and are starting to reach the frontlines was super funny though.
actually no, stairs in tf2 are clipped brush, you don't fall off them, you are glued to the floor (if you did just fall of them it'd feel like ramp sliding and you coundl't accelerate using wasd and could airstrafe)
@@ApuwiAubrey It didn't apply when people were going *up* the stairs.
1:50 that scout had the archumrdes death
12:45 using Ultrakill music is weirdly appropriate since Ultrakill just added its own Direct Hit into the game lol.
No damage, only knockback on hitting the terrain, and extra damage + splash radius on a mid air direct hit.
The ULTRAKILL music during the air-shot montage is super appropriate, given that the Rocket Launcher in that game has a built-in bonus explosion when you hit an in-air enemy.
Also, one enemy - the Solider, ironically - is basically specialized around airshots, because they have an explosive damage resistance on the ground, but lose that resistance while in the air, encouraging you to find ways to pop them up and explode them.
I was complete shit at tf2 when I first tried it like ~6 years ago but funnily enough I became cracked at UK and then picked up tf2 again and actually kinda wrecked face. Ultrakill turns you into a (christ 😅) machine…
vouch though, game will chew you up and spit you out with better aim if you take the time to lab coins and rockets
UK rocket launcher is basically direct hit with multi target capabilities
Ultrakill's rocket launcher is having some sort of weird osmosis effect on my Direct Hit lands; and idk how to feel about that
From bullying Gabriel to bullying pub lobbies, gotta love it
i was gonna make a comment mentioning the UK Rocket Launcher, but then he used music from the game, so i was like "nvm he knows" lmao

The Ultrakill cybergrind theme kicking in when the airshot montage started was golden!
I use the Direct hit A LOT and I wasn't sure if it was completely mentioned, BUT you can actually two shot a Heavy if you bounce them enough into the air from aiming at their feet. Counting as a "Mid-air by explosive" making your next shot a mini crit!

The main reason you'd wanna use the Reserve Shooter is if you're *fishing* for airshots of *any* kind and you want to have a backup Airshot Weapon while the direct hit has, say, a single rocket left in the clip.
Still, you could just, y'know, manage your ammo better.
You have 4 shots, you can only manage ammo so much.
I recommend the buff banner to one shot 175HP classes, and 125HP classes from ANY RANGE.
This weapon is insane on Mannpower, because any use of the grappling hook is considered an airborne target. Also, with the strength powerups you one shot a heavy.
"The Indirect Hit" has been my rocket launcher's name for years.
The best direct hit name I've seen was "Hangover piss". The only shots he landed was on a poor f2p engi's level 3.

If there was a weapon that works almost similar to the Direct Hit that I don’t see a lot of people using is the Loch-n-Load since it travels faster, grenades move further and can easily destroy a nest of Engineer buildings with 2 pills.
I can understand why people don’t use it compared to the stock since it no longer has that damage bonus and only applies that to building and that it can’t mini-crit airshot (which I think it should do) on top of it have 1 less clip, but I found that in a lot of cases that is can be better than stock since you’re generally going to be trying to get directs anyway and the Loch-n-Load makes that much easier
Lunala
i really don’t think the lnl is all that good, rollers really do more than you think and that loss of a grenade isn’t worth the slightly faster pill and having the damage bonus be only against buildings
the lnl should have 2 shots in a clip and have it’s old damage bonus back
otherwise it’s just worse stock
Piss
This comment is gonna get alot of likes so I will make my reply stand out.
You get 1 less projectile, thats 100 less potential dmg. Take into account the fact that it has no rollers, and that its projectile speed increase is so slight, that its not an upgrade at all.
it ruins your muscle memory
When I use the loch and load it feels like it doesn't go where the cursor is. Is that correct? Like I tried using it again when I played recently and noticed it seemed to go to the top right of where my cursor actually was.
Loved the part where you said "its ultrakilling time" and proceeded to ultrakill the entire enemy team with airshots

i'd say it's more akin to the crossbow for the soldier

I've been using a lot of the direct hit since I've gotten ultrakill's rocket launcher so hearing the cybergrind music with the airshot montage has ascended me.
Something satisfying of hitting people with a super fast rocket that does amazing damage when it hits the enemy directly, especially in mid-air, rather than hitting their general direction.
Actually though, I was slightly surprised to hear the Cybergrind music, but that's the reason I like the direct hit so much so it makes sense
SRS cannon is gonna be compared with the loose cannon I swear
Single reason why I play it. Its far more satisfying to use. Same reason why I run the loch n load.

The Cyber Grind music fits perfectly for the airshot section, especially because Ultrakill's rocket launcher also does more damage to enemies that were launched into the air.
i heard it and immediately went searching for a comment like this
Also same here for me
double same
I like to imagine a world where rocket launchers deal no splash damage but have full crits for airborn targets, and rocket jumping is replaced with rocket surfing.
The ultrakill music for the airshot part is so good, considering the rocket launcher in that game is directly based on the direct hit
The editing is simple, but so smooth. Ahhh. Visual asmr
11:28 Uncle Daaaaaaane. How do I safely leave my sentry in the open to go grab an ammo pack?
When you were mentioning the remaining health of medic and engie, as well as heavy, thats where the quicker weapon swap of the panic attack can come into play as you can pick off that remaining health rather than waiting 3 years to reload or unload another rocket that would be a waste of damage that you could use to keep yourself alive in case of a sudden encounter.
Great video! I’m new to soldier and I’m excited to get good at the direct hit.

10:40 bro why tho??
14:35 there was a brief period where the DH counted people being off the ground if they were swimming in water, or falling off raised areas of the map. The most egregious example was being able to oneshot people walking out of the vents in Turbine because the vents are slightly higher up than the floor. Fantastic stuff
The direct hit was an unlock I got on the first week of playing TF2. I ended up tunnel visioning on getting those hits. It took me almost a year to understand how much more versatile Stock is
10:41 why? :
One thing to note is that if a pyro does manage to get the reflect on your rocket, not only is it coming at you at the increased speed with increased damage, it also gets the stock blast radius, so not only would you screw yourself over, you can also screw over your teammate.
Meet the soldiering sniper
Been waiting for a vid, finally!!!
The Direct Hit, also know as "Let my pyro airblast you or jump so I can do funny mini-crits, pleaseeeee." is truly my beloved and satisfy me on a spiritual level.
Reserve shooter doesn't seem like a bad option, faster equip speed sounds great on dealing that 10 - 60 health at a mid range, fun for speedy kills
I love that you used the cyber grind music for the air shot portion
I once saw a guy using the beggars bazooka and the base jumper.

He got votekicked.
love your vids man its really good in quality and the effort you put in your videos are amazing
I'm actually trying to learn soldier at the moment and, while I do agree with you, the direct hit is generally the rocket launcher I get along with the most. I think it's just that my brain is hardwired to shoot at the target and not the ground or something else nearby that causes splash damage. Like, I know that the original Rocket Launcher SHOULD be more reliable. But more often than I end up doing just as poorly as with the Direct Hit, without the fun of occasionally just single rocketing 3 scouts in a row.
I just can’t play soldier, could never rocket jump and I never will be able to effectively rocket jump since it requires skill, I never have skill
I am not good at soldier, I am slightly better at everything else, I’m still terrible at everything else as I always will be, but soldier is my worst class
@@ckinggaming5bucketmadness766 I'm also bad at rocket jumping. While I've sorta tried out jump maps it just feels like too much effort since I don't see results, plus I'm lazy. I do recommend you try out some jump maps though if you really want to learn to get better. They should be used in conjunction with videos explaining how to properly rocket jump. One of the secrets to rocket jumping that I can't seem to unlearn is to not press w when rocket jumping.
@@asturias0267 I think I’ve already tried jump maps, I’m not capable of getting better, at tf2 or rocket jumping

TBF, you don't need good rocket jumping to do decent damage as Soldier, he's not suddenly the worst class in nhe game if he has to walk most of the time. As long as you can just do vertical jumps onto rooftops every once in a while. you can still do good damage via rocket spam.
@@asturias0267 Only jump map that ever truly helped me learn rocket jumping was the academy. Beyond that, I found it a lot more helpful to just go into a game and see where I could apply techniques I learned there. Been playing soldier for about 8 years since and haven't had an issue, feel jump maps are a much better platform to start with than a sole learning tool.
I like the direct hit conch combo because not only does the healing let you stay in the fight longer but when you pop it you can run fast hit hard and heal all your health back meaning your basically a immortal scout with a rocket launcher

I’ve only got like 5 hours on soldier, and I fucking love the direct hit. Every time you hit with it, it’s just instant dopamine. If that hit instantly kills a light class, I can barely contain myself. I fucking love the direct hit, swapping between it and stock is just a great way to change things up.
the ultrakill rocket laucher is pretty much a forgiving direct hit,you have to do a direct hit to do damage, but if you dont it just deals knockback, and if you hit an airshot it deals more damage, just smt i thought
6:59i did not expect this XD
The choice in music for the airshot montage feels like a subtle nod to how Ultrakill contains the Direct Hit, but magnetic and possesses a similar type of Stand to my Star Platinum and his The World
also i just wanna mention as well that rocket jumping, especially chain rocket jumps become a lot harder due to the significantly less splash making rocket jumping a lot harder and more inconsistent… like actually hitting rockets huh who wouldve thought
You should do one on the Beggar's, I think it you would enjoy it quite alot and it has a LOT of depth to it
The way I see the direct hit is that it is a upgrade to the stock with negligible difference if your good, it allows you to do everything the stock does but better, it even gives minicrits on airshots
Every non stock weapon
sort of. a stock launcher still is better at blowing up a group of stooges all clumped together
@@howdareyouexist Kind of depends on the map though. Generally Demoman already does a great job at that regardless of the map with double the shots in his clip. If we have a good demo, I'll generally go direct hit and just focus on high priority targets unless it's on a map like dustbowl where the enemy team is always cluttered together in a choke and a random crocket wipes the whole team out.
14:35 and yet that was how it worked almost the entire time i played this game from 2008 to 2012
Loving the ultrakill music for the airshot compilation
Best melee weapon in the entire game, so balanced that even kills you half of the time you do it.
This weapon got me like: “Damn they really snuck a direct upgrade in and thought we would notice.” *3m and 5 missed air shots later* “yea ima use stock.”
This is my opinion on the Stock vs. DH argument;
Both have very clear cornercase scenarios where they outperform the other. In my experience, stock was always better on defense on most maps like Payload maps that have a surplus of choke points. You'll almost always end up getting 3-4 kills at once by spamming into a choke at certain points in the game, and it excels at area denial in that sense.
For the Direct Hit, it excels mostly on offense or on maps with wide open sight lines, where as long as you can consistently hit your shots, you essentially become a mini explosive Sniper. You can become a pretty good pick class and deal with threats that would impede your team, like Lv.3 Sentries or Snipers.
Basically, like most weapons in TF2, it's not really a case of "Is this just better or worse than [X]?" but more of "Is this better than [X] *in this specific scenario*." And that really says a lot about what I loved about TF2's combat, that even the most shitty weapons could still have a niche cornercase where it can excel.
Except the Sharpened Volcano Fragment or Sun on a Stick, those are just trash lol
wasn't expecting the SSX music. good ass video, as always.
Finally, a video on the best melee weapon in TF2.
