A quick tip while using the phlog, you can detonator jump from a high surface and cancel the taunt on opponent's heads, giving you around two extra seconds of crits while being completely invulnerable. It doesn't always work, but when it does its a clean sweep.
I have never had the best luck with animation cancelling the Phlogistinator but I will definitely have to give this variation a go

Everyone knows pyroâs most underrated weapon is the Sharpened Volcano Fragment. I mean, it lets you get up close to enemies and light them in fire!!! No other weapon in pyroâs kit does that!!!

It's still rather good because of the mobility it provides.
I'm being perfectly honest when I say I find more use out of the utility of the detonator than the damage potential of the scorch shot.
I use the detonator purely because the scorch shot is too op, it's just not fun.
The backscratcher is another good melee that synergies well with the detonator. If you're without a medic, the extra health from health packs helps make up for the health you lose when jumping.
Plus its actually a pretty lethal melee weapon

Nah, the Degreaser is very very good with the Detonator. You can switch to and from the Detonator about 100% faster combined. It allows for even more time actually killing your enemies rather than dealing with the switch speed.
edit: Use the Backscratcher with the Deto. The extra healing negates the self-damage over time.
Also, using degreaser, detonator, axtinguisher still allows for burst damage up close

@@mr.pickle6487 Nope, it's based exclusively on time and not damage.
Also, something that people seem to forget is that the reduced after burn is on the degreaser, not on wearer. The priority is whichever hit last, so tagging a retreating enemy ups your afterburn to 4 damage per tick, making it pretty useful.
Degreaser is just a Better Stock Flamethrower and that is why i hate it. It just dosent have anything special about it, with the Other Flamethrowers they got smth Special about it
@@wasdkug_tr True. I mean degreaser does have less damage but its kinda negligable. The only thing that actually harms it is the increased airblast cost. I think they could encourage the combo-ing by making it do less afterburn damage on wearer, and that it does less damage overall. I heard it had a 10% damage penalty in the past.

Another reason I like the Detonator: The design.
Given the barrel and the sound it makes (best sound of all 4 flare guns imo), it's basically some kind of firework launcher, which is dope.
Thatâs a really cool idea but since it already has this mobility thing, that should go to a new weapon.

probably because unlike the scorch shot short hop, you eat a lot of self-damage with det jumping
good if youâre chasing a weak/unaware target, but if you hop into the enemy team accidentally, you probably just die. you canât hop away easily either, especially if you swapped to a non-degreaser flamethrower so they will already hit you a few times before you swap back
really hope scorch shot turns into an incendiary grenade with a cooldown that actually scorches the ground, instead of being similar to the detonator
@@TheOneWhoHasABadName I play jetpack pyro a lot, and it's viable against "skilled" players (on casual/comm servers). Due to the way I play, I can see how Detonator pyro can also work.

Yes, that is my main gripe about the video as well. In reality, jumping into the enemy team with no more than 135 health as pyro is more often than not a suicide play. If you're playing flank pyro, the jetpack is quite better for the fall damage negate and the longer jump, and it's not like you're gonna be using the deto for its long ranged damage anyway.
As a former pyro main, I wholeheartedly agree. Detonator is my absolute fave secondary for the movement potential and fun factor, and nothing else comes close.
The back scratcher would be good as a melee since youâll be a flanker and health packs are valuable giving more health, plus if you want you can do a discount axetinguisher hit if you need.
it's not really the increased self damage that makes the detonator more mobile, it's the fact that the scorch shot has a self knockback penalty. the increased self damage might have some effect, but in general the detonator isn't stronger, it's just that the scorch shot is weaker.
The self-damage actually doesn't impact your blast jump distance at all. It is purely there to limit the number of jumps you can do before healing.

I was hooked on the detonator for a year straight, I love it's movement. As far as loadouts go, I actually don't think the powerjack is the best pair for the detonator. Due to the quick and fluid movement you can get from the detonator, the axtinguisher is an amazing pick, and it's not too difficult to quickly get axtinguisher crits and remove the opponent from this plane of existence. The only comparable secondary in terms of the dopamine rush you can get is the flare gun for its insane crit damage and combo potential.

I prefer using the regular flare gun, It's just the most satisfying thing to aim it and get a nice 90 damage
I prefer to use your mother, she doesn't do any damage, but it's way more satisfying then any flare gun.

its worth mentioning that this is also IMO the most useful Pybro, as often need to leave the engineer's side to chase spies, airblast uber pushes back, etc. and need to get back to engie's nest quickly to reflect rockets or deal with spies. Its also really good for temporarily dealing with snipers, as detonator can be used to light snipers on fire from long ranges, making it really annoying for snipers to aim with aimpunch from afterburn.

I usually consider the detonator pyro's 'best' secondary, simply because when you use flares or a shotgun it's generally used AS your primary weapon when paired with the degreaser. The detonator absolutely rocks.

I love the detonator, it's a good combo between the flare gun and jetpack in my opinion as it increases your mobility but still gives great offense
Honestly, I'm curious how viable a pyro equivalent to the demo or soldier's jumper weapons would be.
Like "The Jump Shot", or "The Fire Jumper".
It'd be interesting to see and be very entertaining I imagine, a high risk, high skill playstyle which increases pyro's ability to flank, at the expense of their secondary, range options, and combos.
Funny to think of a flying pyro shark, and make people feel like dragons.
Honestly food for thoughts, we do have two secondaries that lets you jump or "fly" a bit, but a full blown projection like the soldier and demo can have would be a treat I'm sure

im glad you made this video since before seeing it i used the flaregun but now i use the detonator alot more and enjoy it and i didn't know bout the alt fire for it
One other melee I recommend for if you don't have a medic and want to do a lot of the funny jumping is the Back Scratcher. More HP from health kits means you can jump more often, and you actually have the mobility to get into range of your more powerful melee hit, and of course random crits are a thing
Another great melee choice is the backscratcher. Since pub-medics are on the endangered species list together with the fact that even if you had a med you will probably be on the flanks you will get a lot from that extra healing from health packs to cover all that self damage.
I really love the backscratcher but itâs unfortunately quite underrated.

I always use the Mann Melter with Dragon's Fury. The near hitscan flares give you an easy and generous afterburn window for Dragon's "crits", the mass extinguish is great to cover your slow air blast, the crits help against pyros who can airblast your primary's projectile, you don't feel like a menace to society for using the Scorch Shot, and the infinite ammo paired with Dragon's Fury's rather generous ammo count allows a more versatile play style, where you can be more aggressive or hold positions better, and it helps with being a pybro so you don't accidentally yoink the Engie's ammo after shooting one flare.
Yeah, I only started playing Pyro because of the detonator and thermal thruster, but I actually found it fun!
I used to use the scorch shot because of the little jump boost, then one day I was like "Hey why don't I just use the detonator?" and I never switched off of it ever since

I'm no Pyro main & only have 500 hours on the game, but I think the Detonator is really fun to use with the Axtinguisher/Postal Pummeler. I love moments when I detonate-jump at the enemy, light 'em on fire with my flamethrower, do another d-jump at them to prevent their escape & then finish 'em off with my mailbox. :)

Incorrect! As a pyro main, I know that good pyros are not invincible! Airblasts do not always save their users, and you can absolutely splash damage a pyro down and switch to shotgun. Not saying I'm a good pyro, but I've seen good pyros and I've pulled off a few of their stunts, so I do at least have practice.
Still so fun not being able to shoot at the pyro if you have any projectiles

Honestly when it comes to the jetpack it really really depends on the map, in some maps (most of them koth) the jetpack is really really good, but in other maps there's really no reason to use it

I'm absolutely laughing at the slow reaction time of the demo at 13:18. you could see the wheels in his brain spinning, trying to figure out if he should perhaps move out of your flamethrower flame lol. unfortunately, he died before he could finish thinking
jumping tip: if you want forward momentum and want to jump high at the same time, then try to walk to your right (or left, if you have flipped viewmodels) and shoot directly downwards. This will make you get slightly more momentum than standing still and make you go a little bit higher than usual
i disagree on the degreaser being the worst flamethrower to use with the detonator. if you use the axetinguisher, you can become a beast on the combo. i mean, what can you even do? as soon as you look up you just see a pyro with a flamethrower, about to switch to his axe that can just take away a giant chunk of your health and maybe even kill you
Would like if the Degreaser wasn't mostly a ripoff of stock nowadays, TBH. I really want it to have its all-round switch speed bonus back (compensated for post-Tough Break stock switch speed too OFC).

You can also use the self-damage to speed up medic's uber build while moving from spawn to the front. Two extra uber pushes in Payload is often a game changer.

maybe we could use the degreaser, the detonator and the axtinguisher since combo pyro would be pretty good with flank pyro
One more simple tip to increase the jump force of your detonator jumps is to simply walk toward the direction of your viewmodel. I word it that way because I am left handed and use left handed viewmodels, so I walk left, while the majority of players would need to walk right. Doing this allows you to walk toward the projectile you are firing since it fires slightly off center.

Detonator works surprisingly well with the phlog, easier hitting some enemies and jumping with a crit phlog is deadly.

Special mention for the Back Scratcher.
The downside is pretty negligible since Medicâs will stay on the front line with the Heavies and Soldiers, instead of flanking with you.
So getting both extra damage, and extra health from Med-Kits from the Back Scratcher is a contender, maybe even better than the Powerjacks extra speed.
To be fair, big props to anybody that can time a reflect against a huntsman arrow.
I always love using the Detonator or the Panic Attack on Pyro, it's just satisfying and fun to use.
i think the best thing about the detonator is that you can detonate it instantly to the side so its just such a horizontal and effiecent movement tool even if it doesnt have the raw knockback of the rocket/stickybomb launchers
its also great to see the absolute terror on the enemy team's faces when an ubered pyro det jumps right into their mugs with the dragon's fire
I remember seeing one pyro with a detonator and immediately being in love with the thought of rocket jumping as a shitty wm1 phlogger. Haven't gotten the chance to yet as I've been taken up by the beautiful shitshow that is beggar's bazooka, but I'm 100% using it the next time I play pyro

I believe the increase in dragon's fury pyros paired with the detonator is due to Zesty Jesus' recent-ish video on it, as well as the recent fixes on the weapon. And yes, it is very fun combo. A distinctfully different and balanced pyro playstyle is more than welcome.
I like the detonator because it's a good scorch shot alternative on the off chance that you happen to play pyro AND have empathy. It's a rare niche, but I like it.

Flamethrower, Detonator, and the the powerjack are a classic combo.
degreaser for me works really well since you can pair it with the axetinguisher to jump from place to place to do a lot of damage
After 2k hours of tf2, i didnt know you could hold M2 to get a father jump with the detonator, makes me excited to try the item again!
Since this is a video about the detonator, I wanted to mention that I've noticed that the flare doesn't detonate like a stickybomb would, detonating as soon as the button is pressed. From what I've noticed, there are these sweet spots where the flare will actually detonate, but otherwise it will keep on flying until it reaches one of these detonation spots. Idk if this is lag on my part, if I just suck that bad, or if there's some source spaghetti with the detonation, like an invisible projectile sent out that takes time to reach the flare. Would love to hear the thoughts of others that have used this weapon
Some time ago I discovered how good the detonator was and since it has been my go to secondary. Before I was always kinda lost when playing pyro and trying to pick a secondary.
