- In this episode we repair the broken electrical engine oil pressure priming pump on a T-72 fitting it however was a different story..
This video just highlights how such a cheap and small part can cause the whole vehicle to fail.
Fingers crossed the electrical starter motor isn't broken either ! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
How is £5 and £3 make £7 😂😂😂😂
It's maffs init, durrr.
Ted needs to have a word with them. 🧐😆
I thought that. And then realised they hadn't included the "Ted discount"
Bulk discount!
He never claimed to be a good... maths... guy.
£7+VAT is £8.40 so I presume Mr Hewes quoted £7.00 and didn't add VAT?
Bloody disassembling stuff and fixing it instead of relying on sponsors to send full assemblies! Call yerself a CZcamsr? Great stuff keep it up.
He is one step ahead he gets the vehicles given to him
@@user-oo5wh5qr4rnot quite sure that is true…
@@user-oo5wh5qr4r MrHewes sponsored by Ural Vagon Zavod, epic =D
He’s not a bloody magician man!
Oh lol, CZcams deleted my comment saying that it would be epic if Mr.Hewes was sponsored by UVZ. The levels of censorship on this platform gets truly ridiculous.
Great that the starter doubles up as an Air Riad Siren. Magic video again. Thanks.
And didn't explode with centrifugal force.
Never underestimate the joy of percussive maintenance ❤
If in doubt, give it a clout!
BFH for the win😁😁

Regarding Bearings. Waaaay back in the Day (70s), I worked at a company that made Aircraft Wheels for the Military. One piece Aluminum. But we’d have to fit Steel Bearings onto the Aluminum Wheels. The solution that worked was to place the Bearings in a Freezer, then put the Wheels on a Heated Grill for a few hours on low heat. The Wheels would expand, the Bearings would contract, most of the time they would just fit together perfectly.
If they were a little tight, we’d then place them on a Big Arbor Press and, using the appropriate pressing block for the Bearings, put them together. Sometimes, you’d have to have one person pulling down on the Press Handle while someone else would grab the 5 lb Sledge Adjustment Tool and hit the Top of the Press Ram to “Persuade” it to seat. If that didn’t work, we’d bring in the Quality Control Inspector, who would measure the Bearing Well and usually find out that it was Machined wrong. Then the wheel was either re-machined or Scraped. But I say that 99% of the time, they would fit together just fine, and when they came up to Room Temperature together, it was “Bob’s your Uncle!”
Also, if you are going to hammer in a Bearing like you did, grab a Socket that covers the outer race and hit that. Much more uniform Force applied all the way around.
Hope this helps.
Old Trick easy as can be.
I'm going to read that again tonight if I can't sleep.
The thing about the T72 is that it makes you admire the T55 😮
And how bad they are.
@@zacharyfreelove6101 There are one or two issues with the T72 One big problem is that they are Shite 💩 the other big problem is that if you kick one to hard then the turret jumps up in the air and can endanger passing aeroplanes! 💥 ✈ this can be observed in Ukraine 🇺🇦 😳

@@MrHewes I still remember driving a sheet-metal bearing cap into place using the nearest available tool, a can of WD-40 rather than going and getting a soft mallet or a block of wood and a ball-peen hammer because buggerit.
Excellent repair Mr Hewes, apart from the wd40 on the carbon brushes! Commutators and brushes should be bone dry or the carbon dust mixes with whatever you put on them and turns into a form of grinding paste! Those springs look remarkably like Lucas dynamo springs, but i wouldn’t bother taking it out again to check if I were you!
Phil
Good to see you here Phil. I thought these lads and lasses would be up your street.
That was excellent. That oil priming pump is incredibly reminiscent of the hydraulic brake top up pump used on the Nimrod aircraft, that I worked on for many years. That particular unit was built by Lucas. The fitting you can see on your soviet pump in the film even looks a bit like a British AGS (Aircraft General Standard) BSP hydraulic fitting.
@@carlwilson1772 Probably 'acquired' by dubious means and reverse engineered. Like they did with the Nene engines we sold them for 'civilian aircraft' that ended up in Mig jets in Korea.
Normally a problem in the medium to long terms, yes, but with Russian designed and built tanks it won't affect it in the slightest. It actually does the tank good to occasionally submerge it in salt water and then fill the entire interior with fine silica dust before running it over a 250 mile off road course in summer with no coolant and then just smack the living shite out of random bits for 5 minutes with the biggest hammer you can find. Reminds it who's boss and fills all the gaps in components with solid fused silca fill. That's why T72's are waterproof.
thats a beast of a starter motor
Starter motor sounds tougher than some cars

Lovely bearing press!🤣 I have one just like that! It has never let me down!
I have same favorite blue ball-peen hammer.
Saturday morning is complete cos there's a new Mr Hewes video ANS you've fixed a thing! ❤ 😎

Aaaaahhh, Fabulous. Strong rum an me feet up and a great vid to watch. The Ol' Fella Downunda Greg.
Bril!.. Love these vids. That thing sounded soo mechanical, I was expecting to see a huge wind up key in the side of the tank!. 🤣....
That T72 alternator could be used as an air raid siren!
Great vid to start my saturday. Love the banter.
according to the descriptions on the instruments, the T-72 tank comes from the Slovak Republic
I love your channel! You guys are amazing machinists and mechanics! I destroyed 9T-72s one day and 4 BMPs! Keep up the good work!
Can always tell the best designs when engineers hide cheap and replaceable parts in places that require 10+ hours to get at them.
Soviets were clearly just ahead of the curve on that planned obsolescence thing, or drunk, maybe both. Who knows?
The latter more like.
These tanks were not intended for repair. They were mass-produced on the assembly line. The USSR produced tens of thousands of these tanks. In addition, the service life of the tank engine was only 10 thousand kilometers. After which the tank was sold for scrap. So there was no point in making the rest of its parts more durable and repairable...
In fact, I bet that in military use this engine goes out for overhaul waaaaaaaay before any of those bearings will even start to think about wearing out.
It will be something like 500 hours usage = full depot maintenance.
@@nikoBNR1 >me when i pull shit out of my ass
these tanks were not scrapped after 10k km. what are you on, seriously
Cheap and replacable beats expensive and innefficient.
nice one ladz , not having the engine as a removable pack is a big drawback
You guys never disappoint and are always highly entertaining.
Always look forward to your videos
I feel like I helped by talking at my phone while watching this in bed. You are welcome.
...& the search for Adam continues. He was last seen throwing a sledge hammer back towards the T-72...& wearing his standard Olive Drab Overalls that he's not taken off in 6 months. 😂
Bit of comedy in the morning, top job poor old Adam a sense of humour failure 😂
That tank looks like a nightmare to work on!!!! You guys are amazing at what you do.....
Such a great delight watch these videos keep them up!
Good to see Ted on the job, supervising your work on the starter motor. 😅😅😅
Now that is a result, the use of a copper hammer for the bearing fitment may have been a good idea though. 👍

I see that there are Czech descriptions. So the tank was made under license. In ZŤS Martin (slovakia).
bloody hell , that starter / generator sounds scary .. Mr Best's face said it all

So great to see your channel going gang busters unlike so many other channels that CZcams is strangling out of existence. I learn something new all the time watching you guys fix stuff that a lot of people would throw out and replace. Talk about a loud starter motor! More like a air raid siren.😁👍 You guys need to have a TV show now I reckon such is the popularity of the program.
How do you mean they are strangling them out of existence?
@@carlwilson1772 From what I have been hearing from these channels is that CZcams isn't notifying their subscribers about new posts and therefore aren't getting anywhere near the amount of views they were getting 6 months ago. Because of this their income has dropped off to the point where they are stopping the channel.
@@Spartan902 That's interesting. I have a modest little workshop engineering channel. Nothing like the league of these guys. But I have noticed over the last few months that many of my subscribers are not receiving notifications of my new films, even when they have clicked the notifications bell. If this sort of thing happens to channels with tens of thousands of subs, then people like me stand no chance.
@@carlwilson1772 Sorry to hear that it's happening to your channel as well. Some of the channels I know it's happening to have been around a few years and have hundreds of thousands of subscribers. I don't know enough about CZcams to understand what is going on but it's hurting a lot of channels.
How a Leatherman Marketing person has not come out with a "Tank Repair Edition" is a mystery to me. 😄

@@MrHewes I sent them an email with a link to this video and mentioned that a leatherman tool seems to be frequently used. Still think Ted is my favorite.
I would have thrown that oil pump rotor out, but you made it work. Well done.
Beautiful tank
Sounds great as the motor winds itself up ready for the start. Let us hope there isn't an anticlimax when at peak motor speed the engine is engaged and it doesn't bring it to straining painful stop Moskvitch style!
Very well done comrades 👍🏻
Very nice job chaps 👍
£7. Is that enough coin for the fuel to burn it.?? 😂
Jokes aside, you guys have the right amount of patience for this work.
unadulterated bodging with the bearing! I love it!

Wish unimog bearings were £7 😂
Starter motors like that power airliners!!
WD and carbon brushes don't mix boys and girls 😬😬, it eventually turns the carbon to mush....
Gas turbine starter motors rule 😂😂😂 HELLFIRE ! !
A few ex BR loco's have oil prime starter circuits featuring SOPS (Start oil pressure switch) and ROPS ( Run oil pressure switch), press the start button, oil prime pump kicks in, pressure increases to 12 psi ish, pressure switch interlock pulls and energises the start contactor, engine motors and engine oil pump takes over, pressure builds faster then it opens the engine governor and away she goes ❤, love stuff like this 👍
As a non-engineer, I have to ask - why not just put them together like a car engine where you - wait for it - just turn the key?
Big bearings require lots of oil on initial start up to stave off premature wear due to the masses involved
Lovely tapping hammer tapping 👌😆. I’m guessing Greta has been trying to call you recently 🤔🤣🤦♂
How I like this guy's. Great movies. By the way... Any body was last Saturday on Tiger day at the Bovington Tank Museum?
Dear Joe,
Fixing a T72 for only £7 won’t be a pain in the ash at all.
I look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands
It’s been a right pain the arse but the combo of the priming pump and the starter sounded amazing 👍🏻. Shame we never saw Adam losing his 💩, my old boss used to do that all the time, literally dodged hammers, spanner’s, low flying grinders pretty much anything he could get his hands on when things went wrong in the workshop😂 happy days though.
When I was an apprentice rebuilding starters and alternators, small ride on buggies had "dynastarts" which is pretty much what the t-72 has
You guys 😂 are really awesome, were was supervisor ted ,what does he think about the language you were useing?😮😅
The knackerater 5000 always makes short work of bearing installs😅.
Supervisor Teddy is hard at work keeping his humans in line, Hewes, you make more weird noises with a holler in the background, you guys have too much fun but in the end get things working !
Hi, good job on motor you just need a com stone to bed, the brushes in the good job, and a few them in me time all best steve
Only a one coffee video but appreciated nonetheless 🤪 no idea what your doing but tank stuff is good 🤩😂
I live 1 hour drive from factory where this particular tank was built - clearly markings inside the cabin are in Slovak language, that means it is from ZŤS Martin factory plant (no longer existing). You made a point in video before - some of those electrical components are oversised for what they do - explanation is easy: electroengineering and components back in the day were lacking from funding, know how and obsolete manufacturing processes, so they had to use not very optimised components. You can look at Czechoslovak refridgerator same way, bulky, noisy, powerhungry. But cheap.
and lasting 30 years.
What an ominous sound the pump and starter make
Over in US before we would start our detroit 149 fracturing pumps from Canada we always pull starter before ignition to get oil pres up before engaging ignition. Russians knowing their soldiers couldn't be bothered made sure oil was moving before starting engine
It's simple and easy maintnance wonder what your US shit box is doing in Ukraine other than being hit by drones, dying to artillery and basic Kornets from the 80's.
love the new jacket 😂😂 green one that is😬
Copper mallet maybe? Good video. Thanks
Good fix, I would have skimmed the com on the lathe to make it a flat profile so better contact with the brushes.
I don’t have a lathe yet

My favorite part is when they tighten something that's loose but they don't use loctite to keep it in place 😂
Just needed some patience 😂.
A series wound motor could throw the windings out of the armature 😂😂
I hope you guys will bench test a start to before you install it in the tank it'll be kind of messed up if you installed it and it wouldn't work
