No. Keep her drab olive. I know the RR Eagle doesn't have enough power to pull your foreskin back, but it sounds nice. What about doing a compound turbo set up on it, a la Cummins drag/tractor pulling boyos? Just a suggestion. Mind you, that turbo looks miniscule. Just whack a fucking ma-hoosive big single turbo on it. - If it works, do the same t'other Foden. The tidy one.
This whole channel reminds me of the 1970's when guys just knew how to fettle things from steam engines to tractors to lorries. Loving it Mr Hewes, thanks very much.
In 1986 my old TA unit was given 8 new Foden's at £167,000 each. They replaced 2 Scammell EKAs, 3 Leyland Martians and 3 Scammell Explorers. When lads from our unit visited the REME museaum in Germany and were given a guided tour, the guide showed them an Explorer and told them they went out of service in the 60s. They all fell about laughing and the guide didnt beleive they were still in use.
That M52A2 has a Continental Multifuel Engine. On top of the transmission is an air valve, to change direction of the sprag unit in the transfer transmission. After backing up you must start in first gear to change the travel direction of the sprag unit. If axle starts trying to drag backwards, the air lines at air valve on the main transmission are switched. 23 years working on those. The early 2.5 tons had a mechanical linkage, again from reverse into first gear. The later had an air valve in the cab to engage the front axle. High and low transfer positions worked the same for both.
General rule of thumb tuning old diesel.. no smoke no poke 😂 might be worth checking throttle is getting full amount at pump when flat to the boards in cab on rolls Royce. If I’m right , thank me later
Nice home these have now..some love and attention is all thsts needed... you guys are up to snuff...and rare to see in young ...but farm lads are just fixin stuff all the time...
Nice one. It does amaze me that these vehicles were soooo over serviced in the Military, they are then removed from service and the whole engine and attached components go to "ratshit"......No servicing at all. Used to have the AEC Mk3 as a wrecker in RCT up till 88, after that i think this beastie emerged. Nice to see the "guts" of the vehicle. Keep posting guys. EDIT. Is this the same cab and engine as used on the Foden HMLC Drops?
Hey it’s time you were kinder the Smiths gauges. Many of them are over 50 years old and have not been cared for in the least. They were an average gauge designed for the motor industry in the fifties sixties so they were designed to a price. Yes, many will now require replacement but that is not bad for vehicles that has been neglected for twenty to thirty years. You forget how well much of this was when correctly serviced. The problems set in when the money men in the MoD decided to extend pack life without consulting those who knew. So a 432 started with a life of 3000 hours extended to 5000 extended to 8000 and the savings were wonderful or were they. In 1976/7 there were no fan belts and few windscreens for soft vehicles so they all sat in dead parks. But the money managers know all!! That is how military savings are made and if you ask the right questions today the answers are probably the same. The only thing you can guarantee is they will prevaricate from making an honest answer.
Loved seeing the Foden engine when I was in the RCT I drove a Foden it had a Rolls Royce eagle MK3 engine. Such a nice engine good gear box. Had exhaust along the front under bumper great pulling away from a pedestrian crossing in the morning everyone disappeared in a cloud of exhaust fumes. 😅😅😅😅😅
Exhaust manifold is wet due to a lot of static running & needs a good run to blast the kack out, air tanks used to be drained weekly, due to air drier heater underneath not normally working (2 wires onto bottom)
2:43 It's so refreshing that someone actually knows what Anderson connectors (leads) are, it seems lots of recovery operations (A well known one that works in the sand in the USA for example) don't. Very useful to wire in next to the battery (Jaguar XJ220) and on the end of a set of jump leads. Also available in red (and blue and yellow, etc)
Remember how much you turned it so next mot you can turn it back. I used to stop in a lay-by just outside the testing station and wind in the max delivery stop on sims jerk pumps .
I remember the Foden EKA coming into service and replacing the Scammell EKAs we were using for MSR clearance in BAOR. Weren’t up to it the Foden was very underpowered and would only do 55 ish mph loaded and less on any hills
The Rolls Royce "Eagle" was used in a lot of British trucks, Foden, Seddon Atkinson, ERF, Leyland and Scammell, i think when Perkins bought Rolls Royce's diesel division they took over the production of it and renamed it inline with their product line. I used to work on the 265 version with a "Majormech" fuel pump if my memory serves me, i think CAV ended up taking over them.
Rolls Royce produced the Eagle engine as a cheaper ‘commercial vehicle’ engine and the C Series engines were the more expensive industrial engines. But in some instances they classed Eagles as C series 🥹 Later when Perkins bought Rolls Royce Diesels, the Eagles (and the rest of the engine range) became ‘Perkins’. Sorry for being an engine geek😇
Who thinks we should paint the Foden Black?
No. Keep her drab olive.

Definitely and also chuck some black wheels on it
Drive everyone nuts by painting it pink with yellow spots
Black sounds great, especially as its Ex army now
Just rub some oil over it….an leave it retro😝an preserve the rust 💪🏼

I didn’t realise the FODEN had a bleeding Rolls Royce heart!! 😍😍👀
She’s a beauty!!

Who knew the lovely Ted was such a virtuoso?
Is there anything Ted can't do?
He plays Houndel, Wagner and a bit of Barch.
As if Ted being a certified mechanic and engineer wasn't enough, come to learn hss a pianist.
3:53 Turbos shed their skin every 2 years so don't even worry about it.
In preparation to grow to the next size.😂
Damn. I kinda want one of those Fodens. Looks cool and very useful. 😎
Freezing, pissing with rain and bent over double into an engine bay.... You lads love it. 😂😊😊

Great video guys, must say that the sound of those two trucks are absolutely wonderful ❤👌👍👍👍
More Ted please! As for the Foden, despite appearing to be powered by a collection of rusty scrap, it goes pretty well!
Love that beast !!
Another top quality entertaining video lads !

Preventive maintenance is a must for vehicles of any size.
These guys have the most wonderful sense of humor.
Bloody good fun. 😊👍🏻

It's not really all that surprising.
It's not like the lads have anything else to do most of the time except to fiddle and fettle.
Reminds me of that episode of scrapheap challenge wirh the barley pickers!
Speed and power. Love it.

That white board in your shop is epic.
Think Ted needs his own channel he is lush 👍
British Engineering…if it isn’t leaking oil, it’s out of oil. Keeping the dust down in parking areas since the birth of WO Bentley.
Love your job

Broken wire at the front is for the high temp lamp/buzzer me Hewes, another great vid as always 👌😎
i was going to comment on some other stuff but as soon as i saw Ted walking up and down on the piano keys my brain went to mush❤
Good work
Still a good looking bit of kit! For its time exceptional! , just need a Drops and a stolly now!, keep up the good work!.
The Stolly was a great bit of kit, I think they have one. Matt has done a video on his channel about one.
@@mrspudly1 OK thanks new to the channel 👍
It'd be funny if someone from Antiques Roadshow saw the video .. noticed Ted's piano .. and told you it was worth 100k .. before Ted walked on it ..
Great humour lads!
Stiff throttle cable might be a clamp too tight which clamps the inner cable. The plastic pipe going to to the gearshift is the range change
Sounds like the truck from that film Duel

Permanent 6x6 lots of use on the road eventually blows up the transfer box

Ted's a master of the horror film music, isn't he!
great sounding trucks 👍
Good times. More speeeed and more power! What day is bully Seb day again?
Brilliant! Was the crash we saw in a shart vid a part of 'bullying Seb' or it's the other way around?
Remember how much you turned it so next mot you can turn it back. I used to stop in a lay-by just outside the testing station and wind in the max delivery stop on sims jerk pumps .
I am loving the, should we replace or repair? Nah, just leave it! 😊
I have no earthly need for a Foden- But i needs It! 😂
Perfect for the school run. Teach those Volvo XC90 twats blocking the road a lesson.

Nice and STRONG engine😂6 cylinders Turbo diesel, how manny HP??Hello from România, Brașov 😊
Is this Foden unusual with an RR C series diesel rather than a Perkins 290?
