I think it depends on the relationship I have with the friend and even the cheating spouse in question. If I have a good rapour with the cheater, I will approach him/her first and then give them a chance to come clean. In some other cases where there is no existing relationship between the cheater and I, I am collecting evidence and telling my friend straight up. That is what i would also want someone to do for me.
