Eurovision: Top 25 Returnees Who Did Better in Their Subsequent Attempts

- Happy new year everyone! Today, we will be looking at some Eurovision artists who competed again and did better than their previous attempts.
There are more or less 200 artists who competed at least twice at the song contest. However, this statistic only includes those who competed as a lead artist and returned again as a lead artist or a member of a duo or band. In other words, this excludes those returnees who first became a backing singer and later competed as a lead artist or vice versa.
I adopted the formula of @clarinetmoonesc in calculating the ranking of these entries. I highly recommend watching his videos for more Eurovision statistics.
Enjoy!
Hello everyone! It seems that there might be a confusion as to why there are returning artists who were not included in this video. I apologize for the confusion.
I wrote in the description box that I adopted the formula of ESC Clarinet Moon in ranking these entries; thus, the entries that you see in the video are STATISTICALLY the best returning entries based on their previous attempt.
I’ll just be providing a spreadsheet so that you may have a visualization on how I did the math. Again, big thanks to ESC Clarinet Moon for the formula.
Here's the spreadsheet link: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1InkwYkahs2XdBrBSfkfe0Ixts4iYUdKoIkxZRWjCWoA/edit?usp=sharing
Cheers!
You can add Vicky Leandros with l'Amour est Bleu in 1967 and Après toi 1972 to your spreadsheet
@@zebras54 she’s #39 on the spreadsheet
How did you get this result in a decimal fraction? E.g. 1st/19-1.0000 and 3rd/16-0.8667?
@@edthepheurofan oh my oh my. Apologies.
@@kubamatusek2609 I adopted ESC Clarinet Moon's formula in calculating these. Basically, a win is 100% and last place is 0%, and the remaining entries are fractionally placed in between.
His video in the top countries in Junior Eurovision by average results perfectly explains the formula. I highly recommend to check his videos out.
Interesting how the second attempt more often than not turns more up-beat.
unless you're look at Linda Martin and Monika Lynkte, both sent much slower entries during their second, more successful attempt.
@@Beckford4000 do u not understand the meaning of "more often than not" ???
@@Beckford4000and Tamara Todevska
You could also include Helena Paparizou. She firstly participated in 2001, as a part of Antique and then she won in 2005.
Edit: ok, I've just read the pinned comment! I got it!😊
2001 she got 3rd that's why
If they're still alive, what's left of Peter, Sue and Marc should be internally selected for Switzerland one year as a tribute!
Jahn teigen is dead
This is a very interesting video. Interesting that many of these competed for two different countries. Also funny seeing Peter, Sue and Marc twice. Theyre legends competing 4 times in 4 different languages
I love Şebnem Paker’s entries so much. Both are genuinely fantastic songs.
How many times you want to represent Switzerland?
Peter: Yes
Sue: Yes
Marc: Yes
Never won
Poli did the biggest progress tho considering the difference in competition levels. Top 3 are cases long time ago when there were much less participants and songs were not as different from each other as they're now
The transition in Sebnem Paker, Doris Dragovic, and Tamara Todevska's parts are so good
The amount of control in Mia Martini's voice between her two entries is like night and day
🇨🇾 What a beautiful video! ❤ Thank you! 🙏🏻
Anna Vissi was also 9th Place 2006 in Athens
Yeah, but that's the other way around. She finished 5th for CYP in 1982. But if you're only talking GRE, then that counts.
Doris Dragovic returned and slayed. Would love her to represent Croatia again
Super video!! Can you make a video for those who did worse?
Where’s Linda Martin, Vicky Leandros and Dima Bilan? All winners.
They got 2nd 4th and 2nd respectively while #1 in the list got 17th on apptmpt 1 and 1st on take 2
Joyous
Katja Ebstein is missing in this video.
- "Wunder gibt es immer wieder", 1970, 3rd place
- "Diese Welt", 1971, 3rd place
- "Theater", 1980, 2nd place
Please read the pinned comment. Thanks! ☺️
Elisabeth Andreassen was in Bobbysocks! ? That means she was my winner twice, since Norway took the first place in my top in both 1985 and 1996.
Tamara Todevska was right for coming back since she was my winner in 2019.
Hot Eyes were my winners in 1984.
Both Poli Genova's songs were my winners.
That transition from Trödler und Co. to Io senza te is funny yet epic!
Nice!
Thank you! 🙏
Always remember son you are vengeance -hamilcar
Linda Martin could have been on the list too
Yeah but she only moved up 1 spot, but to be fair that 1 spot did give her the win😅
Can you make the same video with artists woh did better in their first attempt?
Love the vid...but no Vicky Leandros? apologies ive just seen the above comment 😊
Cool! 👍 Why is Sunstroke's project "Hey mamma" blurred? 😏
Copyright. That's pretty obvious, anyone who's been on CZcams longer than 6 months could figure that out.
@@Beckford4000 op joined 17 years ago.....
5here needs to be another video as a few were missing
What about Udo Jurgens of Austria? He competed 3 years in a row and improved each time.
6th in 1964
4th in 1965
1st in 1966
There's a lot he's missed out here (e.g. numerous people who won on their second attempt, e.g. Carola, Linda Martin, Dima Bilan, not just Udo).
Valentina Monetta also competed three times, improving each time.
He didn't made the top 25
@@Beckford4000they didn't make the top 25
@@Beckford4000she didn't maje the top 25
I usually find that the second attempt does worse, but there’s a lot of these!
Vicky Leandros Participated in 1967 And he won in 1972 I missed her
It’s just abit of fun but you’d think a formula would put actual winners in the top ten. Carola for Sweden, Helena Paparizou for Greece and Dima Bilan for Russia - all came back for another attempt and won.
How did Peter, Sue and Marc make the list twice😂
Chiara from Malta could be there too, as she was first number 3 and later 2 :)
Where is Kikki Danielsson from chips with Elisabeth Andreassen 1982. In 1985 she came 3
Based on my calculations, courtesy of the formula made by ESC Clarinet Moon (you can check out his videos for more ESC stats), Kikki ranked 27th. The video only featured the 25 entries so that explains it. 😊
Where is Carola? 1983 - 3. 1991- victory.
You should do a top 50 🥹🥹🥹
Hanne Krogh is almost a last to first story
Where is Stella Maesen? She participated with her sisters as Hearts of Soul for the Netherlands in 1970, then for Belgium in Dream Express (for the Flemish television) and then as Stella with Si tu aimes ma musique for Belgium for the French television...
I loved Na Inat so much
I'm surprised to see so many artists representing different countries.
Donny Montell (Lithuania) 14th -> 9th, Monika Lynkte (Lithuania) 18th -> 11th, Marco Mengoni (Italy) 7th ->4th. You could also include Carola, Dima Bilan & Linda Martin who won on their second attempts. Constantinos Christoforou (Cyprus) 9th (solo) -> 6th (as part of One). How did you include Senhit, but not 2 other San Marino artists, Valentina Monetta (14th in SF -> 24th in the final) and Serhat (12th in SF -> 19th in the final). Maybe not as dramatic an improvement, but still they did much better with their subsequent attempts. How you can include Lys Asia, who everyone knows won the first contest, yet exclude these entrants, I don't know.
As the title of the video suggests, I only included the top 25 entries who did better. I know there are A LOT of artists who returned and did better than their previous attempts, 85 entries to be specific, but again, I only made a video specifically highlighting the top 25 entries who statistically did better.
You can check out the pinned comment if you want.
What about Linda Martin???? 2nd to Diggy Looo and 1st in 1992????
Mia❤
Is there a part 2 to this??
Unfortunately, no, since the video only features the 25 entries who statistically did better than their previous attempts. You can, however, check the pinned comment and click the spreadsheet link to see all returning artists who did better in their subsequent attempts.
How is no one commenting that Lys Assia won the 1st Eurovision, so that cant be included as she won the first time, and i feel like the two enteys that combined into La Det Swing could have been combined, as in the didnt need two separate spots on the list
Going from 2to 1 like Dima is more iconic. Or 1 to 1 like Loreen
Chiara did better in 2005 (2nd) than she did in 1998 (3rd) when she represented Malta. :)
6:24 best rinoplastic surgery ever
How come Peter, Sue & Marc are in it at 1:46 and then again with another 2 songs at 10:06, all for Switzerland ?!
Doris ❤
This is good, but where is Dima Bolan, who will 2th place in 2006 and winner in 2008?
didn't you forget Helena Paparizou?
I don't understand how Karolina is higher than Tamara when Tamara had a much higher jump from a lower place to a higher place
Read the pinned comment plz
Where’s Linda Martin? 1984 2nd 1992 1st
shouldn't monika lynkite be in here too?
Pending on how you see the score for CRO99 since they country got a 33% deduction due to male voices on backing tape without male on stage I wonder if Doris really did better???
Merit-wise, yes. For relegation system, no.
Where is Darja Švajger for Slovenia?
She was 7th in 1995 and 11th in 1999 so obviously it’s such a downgrade.
and where is Loreen, she also won twice, one in 2011 and the other in 2023
Where is Joksimovic? Also it's criminal how Run away was 22nd in 2010.
Technically Joksimovič gained worse result after his return (2nd in 2004 and 3rd in 2012)
You absolutely forgot Linda Martin
Wow no Katja Ebstein and no Udo Jürgens who actually did a perfect triple.. 😮
Thought the same thing...
Akula-Кiслотний DJ(never qualified)
Dima Bilan finished 2nd in 2006 and won in 2008
Where is Marion Rung? Tipitii 1962 7 place and Tom Tom Tom 1973 6 place!
Please read the pinned comment. Thanks! ☺️
And dima bilan?
Read the pinned post
Dima bilan with Russia
Elena paparizou greece
Dima Bilan. Why not?
Please read the pinned comment. Thanks! ☺️
Sanja Vucic?
Please read the pinned comment. Thanks! ☺️
Poli Genova 2nd is the best
Sorry but you have not all here. Vicky Leandros 1967 4th and 1972 1st. Carola Häggqvist 1983 3rd 1991 1st. Marion Rung 1962 7th 1973 6th. Fredi 1967 12th 1976 11th. And Lys Assia was 1st 1956..Second time 8th and third time second. So She not be In this list...
Where is AUSTRIA
Please read the pinned comment. Thanks! ☺️
For real I expected and Dima Bilan here
