- Here's a recap of all the songs that competed for Portugal in Eurovision Song Contest from 1964 to 2023. Please, enjoy!
Portugal has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 54 times since its debut at the 1964 contest. Since then it has missed five contests (1970, 2000, 2002, 2013 and 2016). The contest is broadcast in Portugal by Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). Portugal won the contest for the first time in 2017 and hosted the 2018 contest in Lisbon.
Portugal finished last on its debut in 1964 and again in 1974, before achieving its best result of the 20th century in 1996, with Lúcia Moniz finishing sixth. The country then finished last for the third time in 1997. Having not appeared in the final since 2010 and as holders of the record for most appearances in the contest without a win, Portugal won at the 49th attempt, when Salvador Sobral won the 2017 contest with the song "Amar pelos dois", Portugal's first top-five result in the contest. As hosts in 2018, the country finished last in the contest for a fourth time.

We need more countries that respect their language like Portugal
Definitely, they are so original 😢
Yes...e.g. Austria and Germany🇦🇹🇩🇪
Spain, France and Italy do it too
United Kingdom is respecting their lamguage too 🇬🇧
@@mehmedtheconqueror1432 And Malta
Portugal = always authentic and doing its own things. Never change, dear Portugal, never change!
On a very sad note, Sara Tavares (1994 - Chamar a Música) just passed away today, losing the battle with a brain tumour. She was only 45. 🥺😢
Que descanse em paz a sua alma🕊
RIP ❤
Quando ouvi a notícia nem conseguia acreditar
Que Deus lhe Deu o Céu ❣️
So sorry to hear that i love her esc song rip
Portugal is underrated
Portugal is almost always amazing but so underrated. This year Portugal deserved top 10 not 23rd, Mimicat was amazing and Europe should have given her more points.
Yes. Top 10! No doubt. I don't understand how the juries could rate it só low.
She deserved top 5
@@MustiiForTheWinprobably next year
Absolutely!!!

I always love Portugal’s entries. I love the fact they virtually always sing in their language. 🇵🇹
at least 4 times in english and one in gibberish
either is virtually or always , can't be both.
3:34 This song is part of Portugal's recent history. This song was the password used to start the "Cravos" Revolution in April 1974 (peaceful revolution)
If memory serve that "honor" belong to "Grândola, Vila Morena" by the great Zeca Afonso. The music was not blacklisted by the censorship of the time. The vinyl was deployed on the radio by Joaquim Furtado the radio man. Father of Catarina Furtado. Although he was not aware of the deeper meaning of it. ;-)
Edit:

After reading the article, I stand corrected that was the second song. The first was exactly like the original poster mentioned. ;-)
Ai Coração is so freaking catchy and fun. She definitely deserved at least top 15
Saudade, saudade is probably my favourite portugese entry of all time. It's so enchanting
Mine too because it's the only passable song they sent
My winner of 2022
Tanho tantas SAUDADES DE O MEU POTTUGAL!!😢😢
Mine as well
I counted again, they have 19 wins in my tops. Literally the best country ever in Eurovision

"Senhora do Mar" should have been Portugal's first victory. The song is phenomenal. I don't understand "Vida Minha" not qualifying and Mimicat's 23rd placing in 2023 either. She was awesome on stage and the song is great.
Portugal should have already won in 1964... They have been my winners for 14 times
@@MustiiForTheWin Portugal's old songs are indeed really good. In recent years, there have been great tracks, too. Funnily enough, Portugal seems to perform better when they send male singers to represent them. In general it's the other way around with other countries.
Totally agree that they should've won in 2008, but they had some great entries back in the last century too. To me, Portugal should've been up there with Ireland and Sweden, competing in the league of most ESC Victories.
@@Tejiknasten Yes, Portugal has had some really great entries. When they're ''lucky'', they finish in the top 20... It's weird. I may be wrong, but sometimes I feel as if the public and the juries view the country basically as a participating nation, not really a competing one... Only this can explain the extremely low points Portugal receives over and over again. Even the most basic Swedish song gets 10 times more. Ingrosso's entry a few years ago comes to mind. It only finished in the top 10 because the juries showered it with points. Strange.
@@JCesar-xf2bk But they did come 9th place only last year though, so we can't say that they flop all the time.
And I guess that this might be because I'm Swedish, but I prefer Benjamin Ingrosso's entry over 90 % of the Portuguese entries.
Portugal is, together with Czechia, one of my favourite countries in the ESC. I wish that my own country, once in a while, had the guts to be as free from the ESC trends, as Portugal so often tends to be. So even this year. My favourite Portuguese entry, though, is their masterpiece from 2017. And 1974, what a great way to start a democratic revolution after 50 years of totalitarian rule. No other ESC entry has been as important through the history as Portugal 1974. And today, almost 50 years later, Portugal is one of the most solid democracies in the World (and one of the countries with the strongest press freedom). An example to follow, for so many places of the world. Amongst other favourites of mine, I need to mention 1982, 1984, 1992, 1996, 2008 and 2022. Greetings from Sweden. 🎶👏👏👏👏👏🎶
Very well pointed. I think that was definitly remarkable for the reasons you pointed after Salazar's State got taken down by "his" own soldiers.
Since then we ahve been rulled by corrupt politicians, hence why the state of our nation economically.
my favourite eurovision country, i love how authentic they are
It feels like 2017 was the year Portugal really formed into the powerhouse it’s become today. Notice how after winning they’ve only NQed once compared to before that where they struggled to qualify much at all. Honestly it’s a shame given they’ve been very true to themselves since the start, but it’s also nice to see the public start to appreciate their talent and respect the authenticity.
It’s nice to see Portugal qualify recently in the final. In the past they struggled to qualify. Another example is Finland they have been in the top 10 twice in 2021 and in 2023, while in 2010, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17 and in 2019 they failed to qualify.
How did Portugal won in 2017, came in last in their home country the next year is CRAZY. They went from quality to awful
Conan didn't deserve the NQ! It was a huge blunder!
Senhora do Mar being the most underrated song in Eurovision history :((
Portugal always being Portugal, we love to see it
SOOOOO many great songs from Portugal over the years!!!!!!!!!!!
Hard to not love Portugal. So many great entries, I still listen to 1993, 2017, 2021, and 2022 often
I'm so in love with them
Salvador Sobral’s winning song is my favourite because it sounds like one of those old school Eurovision songs (from 20th century) which is nice for a change. 😊🇵🇹
I honestly consider all their entries between 1979 and 1984 a masterpiece that should have at least made the top 5 each year ❤
I LOVE so many Portuguese entries, so much heart and soul in their songs and of course the love they show for their own country ❤ Love from Serbia to Portugal! 😊
saending back love to Serbia from Portugal
Maro's Saudade, saudade is my favourite, just amazing! Portugal amazes me every time with their entries! They are so original and doing their own thing everytime!
Even tho im portuguese, im not being biased and I think we all can recognize that one of Portugals best entries and one that should have been a winning performance was 2008’s Senhora do Mar! Just phenomenal.
A worthy victory in 2017 in Kyiv! This song won my heart
I like how portugal improved after their 2017 win, very happy to see them like this.
They should have won a lot in the classic years of Eurovision tho😢
Oh yeah, the country with 14 wins in my top lists
Portugal sends great songs and the hottest participants I've ever seen as a big Eurovision fan. Yet they were almost always so robbed.
Edit: it's 19 wins now
For me it's 5 victories (in 1965, 1972, 1989, 1991, 2010). Easily the most underrated country
@@Dr_seger it would be a long list if I listed everytime I was totally obsessed with a song from them... Their last win in my tops: in 2011.
However they are almost always in my top 10 since then
Mimicat is my 9th😍

Excelente escolha. Tem muito bom gosto. Muito obrigado!
Most underrated: 1997 ... She had flawless vocals (and I can't deny she was hot that year on the stage 😅) and still 24th with zero points??? I'll never understand.
Was indeed a wonderful song ❤
I agree. It made no sense.
Portugal is honestly so underrated
It's the best country in Eurovision for me
So many underrated classics from Portugal, and they didn’t even crack the Top 5 until 2017 with their very well deserved win.
My favorite years were 1966, 1971-74 (the best period for them), 1978-80, 1983, 1994, and 1996.
I think the most meaningful one has to be de 1974 song.
if you didn't know between the years 1933-1974 Portugal was under a dictatorship which killed and tortured the whole country and in April 24th, at exacts 22h55 to be precise, this song came in the radio, it was a code, a code that started the downfall of the dictatorship that Portugal was on.
This was the sound of freedom, hope, euphoria, the sound that led the military forces to reconquer the so long lost freedom of my country.
25 de Abril sempre!!!
Am I the only one who loves the 1977 one? I can't stop listening to it 😁
Robbed masterpiece, what can I say? In my top 5 of my all time favourite songs in Eurovision of all time
Love it too !
Oh YES, I love it aswell............
What! I’m from Portugal and I just heard the Sara Tavares news! Rest in peace you are a true warrior
RIP 💔
Of the 54 editions in which Portugal participated, only in 11 the country managed to finish in the top 10.
78 & 82 were vastly underscored, both fantastic Eurovision songs that deserved better.
Late 70's all the way to the beginning of the 90's was, in my opinion. A period of fantastic musical discovery and exposure in Portugal. Much fruit of the after revolution opening and consolidating of new styles and approach to the arts in general. A breath of fresh air in the music scene!
Than came a "trip trough the desert" of the late 90's. Only getting back on track after wining in 2017.
Artists like Adelaide Ferreira (1985), Dora 1986-1988), Maria Guinot (1984), Dulce Pontes (1991), José Cid (1980), Anabela (1983), Sara Tavares (1984), etc. Being lost in the wave of change. All absolutely fantastic voices and overall talented artists.
I still remember when Salvador Sobral won Eurovision, I was watching it on TV, and when I saw that he had won I painted a picture of him to remember that moment forever. I still love that song and just thinking about its story makes me shiver.
Last year, Portugal was incredible ❤❤❤
Actually, I should correct you. In the 2022's entry, you put the song's name translated as "yearning, yearning" but the word “saudade” doesn't have any translation to other languages, it's a unique word of ours, one that represents our culture and music.. 19:34 ❤
Tem longing, que é o sentimento de falta, de sentir algo distante. Creio que isso é justamente o que saudade significa. Então não, não é exclusiva ao Português.
Portugal never gave up but then 2017 they did it🇵🇹
My favorites songs
1967 O vento mudou
1968 Verão
1972 A Festa da vida
1973 Tourada
1979 Sobe, sobe, balao sobe
1982 Bem bom
1989 Consquitador
1992 Amor d'àgua fresca
1996 O meu coraçao nao tem cor
2003 Deixa me sonhar ( One of my favorites)
2008 Senhora do mar
2014 Quero see tua
2015 Ha um mar que nos separa ( I don't know why but at the beginning of the excerpt I felt like I was hearing the music from 2003 again)
2017 Amar pelos dois
2023 Ai coraçao

For me one of the best Portuguese song is 2010 Há dias assim. I love this one.

Conan was the most underrated contestant ever. He is brilliant, but Europe was not ready for him. As a portuguese eurofan I am super proud of him!
I'm still in love wit his craftsmanship! So outside the box!
He was the best that year. We in Serbia and whole Balkan region, we were angry at the whole world, we felt cheated. He have even better songs like Barcos.
He sure was eccentry but I would not call him brilliant
O jardim, Telemóveis & Saudade, Saudade are 3 of my all time fave ESC entries😍
Thank you!
MARO - Saudade Saudade is the best song here ❤❤❤❤❤
2024 - Portugal and IOLANDA have my 12 points!
Sempre subestimado pela Eurovisão.

Músicas maravilhosas e interessantes de Portugal. Uma música melhor do que a outra.
“E depois do Adeus” , 1974, will always be nr 1. How many more Eurovision songs were used to start a revolution ?
Yes
Their 2019 entry is a masterpiece, shame that it's being overlooked so much
As a portuguese I don't agree, but everyone has their taste ❤
I agree... I love it
I disagree but I respect your opinion and I can understand what could be appealing.
As a Portuguese, this is my favourite portuguese entry
Speaking of Portugal, which I'm simply in love with, I admire the slow songs, but I've always been a fan of the fast ones and I can't understand why faster songs haven't won (Mimicat's song was and still is in my top 10 most listened songs)
Did you colour the 1964 pictures yourself?? I loved that touch a lot! 😃👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hello. I leave you the ones I liked about Portugal at the festival: 1969, 1972 ( This one from 1972 for me should be the winner of that year ), 1984, 1991, 1998, 2003, 2007, 2017, 2021, 2022.
Interessantissimo
I think that... bottom line: There's Portugal before 2017 (Salvador Sobral) and after 2017! Portugal has grown up without loosing their identity. In 2023, Mimicat was just fun and sometimes someone has to bring fun to Eurovision :) I believe Portugal Will come up with something Experimental or "Neo-classic", Simple and a Strong voice. It worked before, it might happen again.
Ooh my god There's so many good songs from Portugal. Where tho start?? But im going with 1971, 1984 , 1994 and 2008.
The 1984 entry was the best one, to a personal level.
is a poetic reflection on the search for self-knowledge and meaning both in solitude and in the presence of others. The lyrics suggest that it is in silence that the lyrical self finds love and understanding, symbolized by the other’s gaze. Silence is described as a space of revelation, where feelings and thoughts crystallize into ‘stone’ or are expressed with the force of a ‘scream’.
is a meditation on the human condition, loneliness, companionship, and how these elements interact to shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. The alternation between silence and crowd reflects the duality of the human experience, where introspection and social interaction are both crucial to personal growth and the search for meaning.
a song that is in the past but it’s so relatable today.

1991 - 1996 was really good, results wise. 😊 At least for a country that hardly ever succeeds in Eurovision.
2023 is my fav
saudade is not the same as yearning. Saudade means having the feeling of missing something
Пісні з національним колоритом безумовний плюс Португалії.
В мене є бажання чути на конкурсі саме такі пісні, вони чудові.
В ціх піснях завжди відчувається вишуканий стиль, я саме такого чекаю від Португалії.
We only won once, but we deserved to win many more. We also had our dark years, but who hasn't? Very proud of my language, our artists and being Portuguese.
I guess Portugal doesn't like singing in Sweden Xd (they didn't participate in the last 3 contests held there, though in 2000 it was due to relegation, but still)
In 2000 we actually selected a song (Sonhos Mágicos by Liana) and there was a chance of participation but Latvia debuted and Portugal was relegated.
In 2013 it was because of financial problems and politic turmoil of that year. There was even discussions to privatize RTP.
In 2016 Portugal pondered to actually leave the contest like Slovakia or Luxembourg but in the end RTP decided to just take a break to revamp the national final which gave Portugal the victory in 2017!
It's kinda funny that it was always when Sweden was hosting but it was just a coincidence! There's nothing wrong between Portugal and Sweden and I'm sure we will be there in 2024. Finally!
Also funny that Sweden withdraw in 1964, the year of Portugal's debut 😂
And… next year we will be in Malmö… once again…after 32 years… after all Sweden is not the problem… 🤪
@@ruiduarte6620 - No problems with Sweden whatsoever. Funny I had never noticed those details! LOL 😂 😂

1979,1993,2006,2017,2021,2023😍
I ve read that 1974 song was used something like a signal for the revolution against Dictatorship, and 1975 singer was an Army Captain that took place in the successful 74 revolution that changed Portugal's history. Or something like that.
