How to Split MP3 Audio into Multiple Tracks in Audacity

- In this tutorial, you will learn How to Split an MP3 Audio into Multiple Tracks in Audacity which is a free open source audio recorder and editor. I’ve been using Audacity for a few years now and I mainly use it for editing my audio, but do sometimes use it to record voice-over. First, make sure to install the LAME MP3 Encoder in order to export your audio as an MP3. If you have the latest version of Audacity, you should be ok.
To split an MP3 into multiple tracks, follow these steps: (1) import your MP3 audio file using \File\Import; (2) press CTRL + B on your keyboard and it will create a separate track with labels; (3) type in the name of your label (for example, "Track 1"); (4) next, place your cursor at the next point where you want to create the second track, and press CTRL + B again. This will create a second label and you can name it "Track 2"; (5) continue this process until you finish naming the tracks.
Once you do the above, go to \File\Export Multiple; choose a folder to save the tracks; click Export; and then OK. This will automatically split the single MP3 into separate MP3 files. In a previous tutorial, I showed you How to Merge Multiple MP3 Audio Files into a Single MP3 Audio. Also, I’ve created several other Audacity tutorials on my CZcams channel and you will find a link below to the playlist.

Thank you Mr. Godinho.
I just wanted to add that in the latest version (that I downloaded yesterday), there is now a box you can check in the bottom left corner of the 'Edit Metadata' window. That allows you to not have to repeatedly click 'OK' for each new audio clip that you have created.
Awesome - thanks for posting this! I'm glad Audacity added the checkbox which will definitely save time and better the user-experience. Thanks for stopping by...cheers!

Anthony's method is superb and helped me a lot. One little addition that I discovered along the way: If you want to split an audiobook of 15 hours in 10 minute chunks, speed and efficiency is of the essence. Do all splits first, and forget the naming of the labels. After you finished, the label track has 100 to 125 labels. Now just scroll to the first label, name or number it and use Tab to move to the next label, name that one, etc.
Thanks for sharing the excellent tip Paul. It's much appreciated and I'm sure will help Audacity users who are especially working with long duration audio files. I generally work with much smaller audio files. If I may, how does Audacity handle long duration audio files? Appreciate you taking the time to share your tip which can really help save a lot of time.
@@AnthonyGodinho It took my not extremely modern and not extremely fast W10 computer over 10 minutes to import the 500mb mp3 file. But once it was imported, Audacity handled it quite smoothly. Only a bit slow on zooming in and out.
@Paul Lamens thanks much for sharing those details. Wow, that was a large audio file and I'm not surprised it took over 10 minutes to load. Though, good to know that for most part, you were able to work with such a large file size in Audacity. Thanks again!
This works like a charm. Thanks for such a clear and easy to understand explanation.
