How to Install LAME MP3 Encoder in Audacity
Vložit

- In this Audacity video tutorial, I will show you How to Install LAME MP3 Encoder. Audacity is a free open source audio editor and recorder. It is the most robust free audio editor I’ve come across so far. It works on Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. Audacity is distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
I’ve been using Audacity since mid-2016 mainly for removing background noise from my audio recordings. I create video reviews and tutorials that I upload to my CZcams channel. I use a Logitech headset to record my audio when I do screen recordings.
Since I got my new ASUS laptop, I’ve noticed that I get a very noticeable background hiss or hum in my recorded audio. I tried various options to remove the background noise, but none was as effective as the method I’ve used to remove background noise with Audacity.
You can download Audacity from the link below. You can check the link below for more Audacity Tutorials on my CZcams channel.

You're welcome! I'm glad this tutorial helped. The new version of Audacity now comes with the LAME MP3 Encoder installed, but some users still need to manually install it. Thanks for stopping by...cheers!
Thank you! Saved me hours of manipulating this in the slowest way imaginable! I had 30 files to string together. With this technique, I was able to finish in minutes instead.
You're welcome Gerald! I'm assuming you're referring to my other Audacity video on how to merge multiple MP3 files. Great to know it helped and thanks for stopping by...cheers!
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. For someone who is brand new to using audacity and pretty much any online editor I really appreciate you.
@vel527 you're most welcome. I'm glad you found this tutorial helpful. The new Audacity comes with the LAME MP3 Encoder built-in. But many users have had issues and have had to install it manually. Anthony: "Click on this "'lame' download page link"
My immature self: ~Giggles~
LOL yeah, hearing that can cause the giggles 😂 I should have put a warning on it 🥸
I love the name of this encoder, given the fact that this bloody thing should bloody well be included with the original program in the first place.
LOL yeah :) but the reason they could not include it in the program is because of software patent issues. Though I think they can now include it because the worldwide patents expired in 2017. That being said, the patents can be extended, so I don't think we will see it included in the software anytime soon because of legal implications.
I am your new Arabian subscriber continue man

That's awesome @LaughClass I'm glad this tutorial helped. I hope your school project went well. Thanks for stopping by!
I am having issues cutting/trimming my audio. I know how to highlight and use the trim feature but I can't seem to figure out how to pause at a certain timestamp and keep it there while I drag the cursor to the next time stamp to cut that section. Every time I try it starts at the beginning and I lose the time stamp. Do you have a tutorial explaining how to do this correctly? Thank you again!
@vel527 I just responded to your question, but for some reason, there seems to be an issue with posting my comment. The comment posted, but was automatically deleted. Let me try and post it again.
@vel527 in my earlier comment that got automatically deleted - I responded saying that I didn't quite understand what you were trying to do when you referred to trimming your audio. If you're looking to split one audio file into several audio files, then I've created a tutorial on "How to Split MP3 Audio into Multiple Tracks in Audacity". You will find the video in my Audacity tutorials playlist. Check the description section. Hope this helps!
The latest version of lame claims to have the lame encoder included but it does not so use the link here to get lame and manually extract it from the zip file.
- LAME MP3 Encoder Download: as shown in the video description
Hi David, yeah, that's what I thought as well. I recently read the latest updated from Audacity on the new version 2.3.2. I've not yet updated to the new version, so thanks for posting this update.
where's the link you say is here in your actual post. I can only get to the Lame is now built in with Audacity for Windows which it is obviously not since I can't export to an mp3. This is do frustrating!
Hi @Regina Pontes sorry, I'm currently out of the country and have not been able to check my message regularly. The link to the LAME MP3 Encoder is in the description section of this video. Hope you are able to download and install it. You may have to restart your computer after installing it. Hope this helps!

you're welcome. It would be great if you could also make a tutorial on how to reduce noise in audacity.
Hi there, I actually have already created an Audacity tutorial on How to Remove Background Noise. You can check my Audacity Tutorials playlist. I don't want to post the link here because I may get flagged for spamming.
Thank you for this video. You made it VERY easy.
You're welcome @ProjectPete I'm glad this tutorial helped. Thanks for stopping by!
thanks so much. It was very useful.
You're welcome @LivetoLove Good to know this tutorial was helpful. Thanks for stopping by!
for those that can't figure it out now, just save your project as a wav file and then convert it using an mp3 converter on the internet. just google "wave to mp3 converter". hope this helps :)
@C-JayyTheDJ now that the LAME MP3 Encoder patent has expired, if you have the latest Audacity version installed, you don't need to manually install it :) The new version 2.3.2 was released in May 2019.
When I go to the downloaded, it takes me to a page that tells me that it has automatically done so. But, you know, if it had, I wouldn't have to be trying to download it in the first place. I have no idea where to go from there.
Edit: Never mind, I just needed to download it from you link manually. Thank you so much!
Hi @TheVenator I was just responding to you, but I'm glad you got it working. Looks like you read my mind lol :) This is what I wrote...
I'm assuming you're using the latest Audacity version 2.3.2. This new version is supposed to have the LAME MP3 Encoder built-in. However, I've had a few of my viewers report similar issues like you have. It's best to download LAME directly from the website (you'll find the link in the description section). Make sure to close Audacity and then download and install LAME. You may have to reboot your computer after installing LAME. Hope this works for you!
@@AnthonyGodinho I have another question that you may be able to help me with, but it also could be way outside your realm of expertise. I'm using the audio for a game I'm making on Stencyl, and it says that the only frequencies that are supported are 44.1, 22.05, and 11.025 (KHz). When I try to change the frequency in audacity, the lowest it can go is 8000. Is there a way to bring it down to those numbers? I'm just putting youtube videos into an MP3 downloader; if that's the problem, is there a way to get files with that KHz? It's ok if you have no idea, I just figured I'd ask. :-)
@TheVenator I've personally never had to do this in Audacity, but first let me see if I understand your question properly. The default project rate in Audacity is set at 44.1 KHz and yes, the lowest it goes it 8KHz. You will also find settings for 22.05 KHz and 11.025 KHz. How low do you need to go? I know that in earlier versions of Audacity there was an issue exporting to low sample rates. It would add silence at the end of the audio track, but I believe this was fixed in later versions. Though, I've personally never tried it.
@@AnthonyGodinho I'm so stupid, I didn't realize that 44100 and 44.1 were the same things, I just saw all the massive numbers and got confused. However, now its telling me that it has "metadata" in the audio, and to remove it. Can you explain to me what metadata is?
@TheVenator ok, that's what I thought and that's what confused me as well. That's the reason I wanted to clarify. I guess it was the KHz vs Hz. Anyway, I'm glad that's sorted out :) In terms of the meta data, you can edit or remove it when you export the audio. Essentially, when you go to\File\Export Audio and then click SAVE, you will see a dialog box where you will be able to edit or remove the meta data. And then click the SAVE button. Hope this helps!
I'm having the same issue but with gold wave. I get an error when exporting mp3 files. I cannot figure out how to install this or where to put it. please help thanks.
Hi there, I don't personally use GoldWave, but if you do need to install Lame MP3 Encoder, first thing make sure you're using a version that's later than v3.92. I believe the latest version is 3.100.
Also, make sure to copy the "lame_enc.dll" file into the folder where GoldWave is installed (usually C:\Program Files\GoldWave) or copy it into the C:\Windows\System (or equivalent) folder.
I'm assuming you're using a Windows PC. You may need to reboot your computer. Hope this works for you.
great video!! :)
Thank you very much good people!
You're welcome. I'm glad this tutorial helped...cheers!
Hi could you tell me please the name of the screen recorder you use? and the name of the software you use to put the red squares in your videos?. Thank you
Mr. Anthony Godinho
Hi Oldan, for my screen-recording and video editing, I use Movavi Video Suite, which has a screen-recorder, video editor, video converter and a couple of other apps.
You can check my Movavi Video Suite Review on my CZcams channel. And if you decide to buy it, you will also find a link (in the description section of the video) for up to 30% discount.
For the red rectangle/square annotations I used PowerPoint (Microsoft 365) subscription version. Hope this helps...cheers!
@@AnthonyGodinho Dear Anthony, you are a magician. Take your like and suscribe! Thank you!!!!!
You're most welcome my friend! I'm glad it helped. Thank you for the like and sub. It's much appreciated. Cheers!
Hi, came across your video while searching for how to combine audio files and link to this. Since there is changes in Audiocity 2.3.2, Maybe need to update your video tutorial. Struggled to install the Lame library and got entangled with the ffmpeg library till I figure out where to download both library.
Hi there, I do have an Audacity tutorial on how to merge multiple MP3 audio files. I have all my Audacity tutorials in a CZcams playlist which is linked to this tutorial. But, you're right, the new version of Audacity comes with the LAME MP3 Encoder built-in. However, many users have had to manually install it and they have still found this tutorial useful. Glad that you were able to download the libraries. I actually have the download link in the description section. Thanks for stopping by!
@@AnthonyGodinho Thank you for your response. I came from the link in the video on merging multiple audio files. Found both your tutorials useful and had subscribed. Thank you once again for your helpful tutorials

Anthony most kind thanks :) I've been using Audacity with my last mac for around 5 yrs but this current update is giving me issues with the lame plug ins even after following yours and others guidance on the program it still has issues locating the library when saving? i wonder if there is something that I'm missing (after all its normally a human computer-interface issue hey? ;-) kindest regards
Hi Rob, thanks for stopping by! :) Sorry to hear that you're having an issue with the LAME MP3 Encoder with the new version. When you downloaded the new version of Audacity, did you do a fresh install? That is, did you first completely uninstall the earlier version first, before installing the new version?
I'm not sure how Macs work exactly, in the back-end, because I'm on Windows, but it may help to do a fresh install (if you didn't earlier). Generally on Windows, when something like this happens, I do the above and may also sometimes go one step further and clean the registry pertaining to the program (in this case Audacity) and then do a reinstall.
I will try and see if I find anything related to this issue on Macs and post here again, if I do find an answer. LOL, I like your "human computer-interface" comment :) Anyway, hope this makes sense and helps. Cheers! :)
@@AnthonyGodinho Yup. I get an error saying I need to install ffmpeg to install ffmpeg. Reinstalling did not help, Windows 10
I used some sketchy online file converter
Hi @Jenn Stotland did you try rebooting your computer? What version of Audacity are you using? BTW, the LAME MP3 Encoder and FFmpeg are two separate software. For MP3 export you only need LAME.
Hi again @Jenn Stotland for what did you use the file converter? Is it to convert the audio to MP3 format?

I have had Audacity for many years. I cannot find hardly any of what you describe. . When I click 'download LAME' I get the Audacity manual. I am not tech literate, very much a child of the 20th century not the 21st. I need to combine 8 tracks into something I can send to radio. In my experience so far that many songs will be too big. When i clicked on my 'downloads' I got my file explorer with a few options for LAME, none which resemble what you get. Is my version too old( it might be from very beginning of Audacity
Hi there, the version of Audacity that I'm using is v2.1.2. However, there is a newer version available now. The LAME MP3 Encoder was only available as a manual download in v2.1.2.
However, in the new versions, it comes preinstalled. I'm not sure which version you have, but you should be able to get the same version I have or download new version (see the official link in the description section).
Some users (of the new version) still had to manually download and install the LAME MP3 Encoder. If you need to do so, you can use the download link in the description (of this video) to download the LAME MP3 Encoder.
Now, in terms of merging multiple MP3 audio files into one, I've created a separate tutorial and you can access it using the link in the description section to my Audacity tutorials.
Hope this helps. If you need any help or have any further questions, please feel free to ask...cheers!
