There is no single cause for coronary heart disease. There are controllable and non-controllable risk factors that can increase your chance of developing it. Many people don't know they have coronary heart disease until they have angina or a heart attack.
Some of the symptoms of heart disease:
    ⚠ Chest pain
    ⚠ Shortness of breath
⚠ Poor blood supply to extremities
    ⚠ Fatigue
⚠ Palpitations (fast or uneven heartbeat)
    How to minimise risk:
    ❤ Eat healthy
    ❤ Be physically active
    ❤ Be a healthy weight
    ❤ Don't smoke
    ❤ Control your cholesterol levels
    ❤ Control your blood pressure
    ❤ Mitigate stress
    ❤ Minimise alcohol intake

Steve! I was just telling my mate Jerry Brown (from Adelaide) you two have too much in common now! He also had open heart surgery at the same age. They told him he'd be in for it but he's 65 and going strong, watching his son grow up and go to uni. So keep up the good habits and regular check ups. Long life and good health to you! ❤

I'm so glad you are alright! The heartbreak of not being able to hold your child is so bad, and the added worry about your partner having to pull all of the shifts while you recover.
I had a heart attack at 34 and, being female, fit, and young, I was initially ignored until a nurse insisted they check my levels. I'm 40 now and I still can't raise my arms too far above my head without some pain.
I hope you recover fully without any complications.
I've been watching your channel for some time and it has been so fun and informative.
Wishing you and your lovely family the best.

Hi Steve, I wish for a fast recovery, physically and emotionally for you.
About 3 years ago I spent 3 months in the hospital for a different heart disease (infective endocarditis). During that time I had a few liters of antibiotics pumped in me, had a couple of strokes, a balloon angioplasty, and a heart operation. During my time in hospital I needed something to look forward to, to keep me motivated, to wait for the day to be out of the hospital again. And I didn't want it to be something cheesy like "I want to see Egypt pyramids" but rather I wanted it to be something that would bring my friends and loved ones together. So I said to myself "I'm gonna learn how to make cocktails". Your channel was the first video I watched on this journey, and even though I now have a lot of amazing content creators in my subscription list, whenever I forget a recipe or need to refresh my memory your content is my first destination. Your warmth, sincerity, and you being an AMAZING instructor has given me a lot ease of mind when I was still an amateur and had doubts. Thanks to you I now have this hobby/new skill that genuinely changed my life, made me tons of new friends, and most importantly made my post-op recovery months so SO much more fun :)
    Thank you again, stay safe!

  • @rickdubois3569

I'm one month post-bypass surgery myself. I'm 58, so older than you, but still young for open heart surgery. I have the the genetics from both sides of the family, so I've worked all of my adult life to avoid this, but I failed to outrun my genetic destiny. My father had his first bypass at age 47 and died of heart disease at 53, so I can relate. The good news is that surgical outcomes have improved dramatically over the past few years. As you know, the first couple of weeks are rough, but at 30+ days, I'm feeling good. It's great to be free of the angina and shortness of breath. I'm glad the problem was found before I had a heart attack. You and I can look forward to long and healthy lives without disabilities, so we should make the most of it. Cheers!

Absolutely wonderful seeing you back and looking good, Steve! I hope this reaches out to a great load of people and helps them realize the importance of keeping in touch with your heart. Heart Disease kills approximately 25% of the US population each year. However, it doesn’t get near the attention that other diseases get. That’s not to take away from any disorders but the fact remains that heart disease is the #1 killer of people in the US.
Listen to this message from Steve everyone and know the symptoms. I was lucky and ended up with a stent in my LAD, aka “Widowmaker” and survived. Not everyone does!
There are plenty of links and websites out there to help make you aware of these symptoms. Please check into it.
Take care, Steve and it’s nice to see you back.

Hey Steve. This exact thing happend to my dad, his veins into the heart had a block which lead to a heart attack no one of us noticed, even not him. We didnt even discover it before he was sent into hospital after beeing sick for a week. The doctors kept giving him conditions that caused his sickness 3 times, but none of them were correct and no one really saw what it was. When he got into hospital they thought it was a heart attack at that point but they couldnt see any signs of it. Next morning they call from the hospital and say its pretty messed up and critical. After 1 month in a induced coma for his heart to rest and the doctors to do surgeries he managed to wake up after 3 tries trying to wake him up, his heart beat kept raising everytime they tried to wake him so it became unstable. Thankfully it went the right way the 4th time and we still have him with us today with a pacemaker combined with defibrillator operated in. Glad it went okay with you aswell, best recovery

Hope you continue to heal. Be patient...it is a long recovery. I had mine about 15 years ago (also young, about 37)
Heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the US. - On average, one person dies every 33 seconds or so. It can impact anyone at any age, and you can live a healthy lifestyle and still be impacted due to hereditary traits.
Heart surgery can impact so many things in your life...Emotions, hyper-sensitivity in your chest, lack of energy, sex drive, motivation, mortality thoughts, depression, etc....I still have not gotten back to "normal". It is super helpful if you have a partner that helps watch over your well being, and points out the changes they see in you, so you can try to work towards overcoming them.
Some folks recover within months, others it can take years. (and still others fail to recover completely physically, mentally, or perhaps emotionally. Everyone is different and will have their own recovery process.) - The best advice is to go at your own pace, and do not try to live up to expectations set by anyone. (It is amazing how the folks working in physical therapy think they have all the answers when they have not endured the event.)
Also, as a matter of semantics, it is not open heart surgery - it is heart surgery. (or open chest surgery) - They do not open your heart up, they graft harvested arteries to the outside of it. (Nit-picking - sorry...It is one of the quirks I picked up after my procedure....) 😁😁
Remember, no one gets out of here alive, so just live well, and enjoy your family and friends. It is amazing how after a major life event like that, we finally realize how trivial that job is, or the car trouble is, or that D on the kids report card, etc....I know I have learned not to sweat the small stuff anymore.
    Cheers!
(Your doctors likely have told you to lay off the fun stuff like drinking and smoking and eating tasty foods, but you can still enjoy a half of a cocktail once a day!)

    Hi Steve,
I'm really glad you did something about it rather then push it back and ignore it. Far too many men still do that, so kudos to you. I had my first two stents at 35 (in 1996) and I was very fit as a soccer player. Yep, genetics. Just because your body might look great, nasty stuff can still lurk beneath.
Like you, I advocate all the time for looking after one's health... it's the most important thing we have.
I'm really glad you had a gym regimen, now, as we all know, it's about the food. That can be a huge challenge at times.
Not really wanting to get political, but it is important to recognise that medical policy, education and science-based research have helped all of us not just with heart disease but everything else too. Those doctors, surgeons and the totally brilliant nursing staff are pure gold and should be valued more highly than they are.
And in Australia, we are all eternally grateful we don't have to sell our homes to receive quality medical treatment. We know socialised medicine is tough to make work, after all, only 31 of 32 developed countries have manged to achieve it.
    Cheers buddy.

Thanks for sharing this Steve. My Dad, one of 18 kids (15 boys!) had a heart attack at 75. He had symptoms but didn't tell anyone. He had a quad-bypass and lived to 92. Most of his siblings died of heart problems much earlier, some in their 30's. His Dad was gone at 52 from heart attack. Now I am being tested for lingering chest pain at 54. I am paying attention! I wish you a speedy return to normal and continued great success, most of all a long healthy life!

1 of 18!? Your Dad still got to live a long life even with a quadruple bypass. I hope you get an answer for your symptoms and that you get everything sorted. Best wishes!

So happy that your surgery all went well. I have always watched what I eat and have been in good shape. However, three years ago, out of the blue had a heart attack and ended up with a stent. Nine months later, I started to have chest pains. I went back into surgery two years ago for a quadruple bypass.Your bringing attention to this health issue is SO important. I'm sure that you have saved many lives with this video. May God bless you with good health as well as your family! Cheers!

All love brother. Because of you I have totally started documenting my recipes and plan on turning them into a book for myself and documenting my journey. Stay strong minded because that’s the biggest difference when dealing with health. Headed to Sydney soon and will enjoy your scene.
Everyone else as a bartender over 20 years in Toronto. The very least I can say is take it easy. Don’t over do it. These days are numbered so why be super hazed out during them. Take care y’all

Hey Steve! Huge fan! I’m glad you’re recovering well. My father had open heart surgery back last April. He feels much better after having it. The recovery is long but the end result is totally worth it. God bless man!

Thank goodness you sought medical help when you did. Sometimes symptoms are not so classic especially for women. I believe one of the worst aggravating factors are parents with heart disease despite being very fit and active.
Give your self plenty of time to heal, your mental health takes a beating too during this time especially when this all happened so fast. It’s sobering to say the least.
All the best to you Steve for a full recovery and long life! 💪❤
