They missed the boat on making a hybrid drivetrain that would actually make a car fun.

  • @755hp
    @755hp Před 4 lety +2

    22:24 Rather than the driver “manually” switching for blends of power delivery between engine and electric motor, why not add a table/surface in the ECU that chooses the appropriate EV % vs engine % blend BASED ON “battery charge status”??
    *Example:* When battery life % is 10 (low), the table is calibrated to use more of engine than EV (and charge battery); but when battery life % is 90 (high), the table is calibrated to use more of EV combined with engine??
    Also, why not build a table/surface in the ECU for when battery temperatures exceed calibrated thresholds/values to switch from higher EV % to lower EV % usage including more engine (increase throttle opening % to make up for loss of EV supplied torque, with more air from engine).
    Essentially, the Motec software needs more sophisticated lines of code/controls strategies to give Calibrators access to tables/surfaces/maps for EV applications in the aftermarket scene.

    • @AruEsse
      @AruEsse Před 4 lety +3

      Definitely that. I suppose this kind of control strategy would require quite a lot of new lines of code and probably some substantial rework of some of the existing. No doubt some if not all the major aftermarket ECU companies are working to do something like this. May I add it would be cool to also have this kind of control boost related for turbocharged applications, so that it "fills" the throttle delay with a peak of electric power. Also, the electric motor could be used as a more clever traction control where instead of wasting the excess power you recover it using the electric motor to literally brake the ICE... we're going to see some cool things in the next couple of years

    You could damp the high voltage spikes 🤷‍♂️

    • @toto29620
      @toto29620 Před 4 lety +1

      It's not the high voltage the problem it's the uge crurent rush that tend to damage électrodes inside the battery. If you want to know more about this topic look up for electrode celerity on google, li-ion battery are kinda weak on this point compared to lead acid for exemple, even tho they have a much higher energy density, it's a technologie limitation. So you will need a very high capacity capacitor or supercapacitor to accepte that kind of crurent and they are, for capacitor, way too small in term of energy density or, for supercapacitor, way too limited in term of voltage and would need a lot of space to accomodate for those high voltage. That's why you see them on boat or bus but rarely on cars it's a bit too limited in space.

    • @MrDannyd9
      @MrDannyd9 Před 4 lety

      toto dona They could build a circuit that lessens the spike with this system, it doesn’t need to be fed entirely through the capacitor. However, I do see what you mean... a few big tantalum caps could be integrated to damp it, but it does seem like a half measure (based on envelope math). 🤔
      I will look through my EE books for more inspiration! Thank you for the quick lesson Toto

The power upgrade for electric RC is a high voltage battery system and electric motor wound to match your voltage rating, I never custom wound motors but researched how because I needed to in order to get a motor correctly wound for my batteries voltage rating.

    Super cool setup. Sasha is a mad scientist creating awesome machines. Did I miss it or does this setup have no clutch at all?

    Very cool, but it seems odd to have the fuel fill directly above the exhaust.
    Seems like that might cause boom boom issues

    So curious how the mechanical coupling of both the electric motors and the engine is specifically. Wondering if it can be used for a DIY hybridization.

    7:40 So in combustion only mode, the electric motor is supposed to produce enough torque to negate the powerloss it adds via drivetrain load?

      If the electric motor disconnected it becomes pretty much a flywheel. Not sure on this particular setup, if it is ever completely off...

    Would you want to add capacitors off the charging system to keep the shock to a minimum? Just curios if how that would work to not shock the system but not having more weight added.
