Just like the Chevy LS1, the Nissan VQ engine is a cheap, reliable way to make a bunch of power. This engine is also extremely versatile, which is why it’s found in a bunch of different Nissan models. It’s one of the reasons we bought two identical 350zs a while ago. You can tune ‘em, hoon ‘em, and boom them - and nothing matters, such is life. Now there are various VQ models but we're gonna focus on the VQ35HR, or “High Rev” cuz it’s the creme de la creme of VQs. This updated version of the VQ35DE is almost completely redesigned, with 80% of the internals being strengthened and reconfigured to handle a higher rev range. Other iconic engines like the 2JZ or RB26 might be able to handle more power and more compression, but the VQ35HR holds a little baby secret: it’s lighter than all of them. It's time for some B2B Engineering on the Nissan VQ.

I have 283k miles and counting on my daily-driven 2006 G35 sedan with no issues (that I can't handle). 25k of the miles have been under my ownership. My previous 2005 G35 made it to 265k before it got a bad oil leak, but I'm going to pull that engine and rebuild it for another 2006 G35 coupe (6MT) I have that came with a blown motor. Once I get that going, it's gonna be a track car!
I bought both of these cars for $1500 each. They've taken a fair bit of work but I've learned a lot, and I have more faith in my daily than ever. In the end, I'll have two great cars (one of which I autocross/drift), have parted another out, and have done all the work myself. This has been my passion over the pandemic.

Would love to see something about high revving engines, valve lift, and/or koenisseggs freevalve system! Keep up the amazing videos!

This would have been a good science garage topic. Maybe an episode specifically for different valve train designs like the freevalve and desmodromics, and chain drive vs belt drive vs gear drive

I found the but on the transmission to be interesting, i owned a 2008 (vq35hr) for years and felt it was an amazing engine let down by a clunky transmission. Although a lot of that was terrible pedal and hydraulic booster design that was helped with aftermarket pedal assembly
