How to Do More Pushups

  • Hey everyone! This video is just to address a very common question I get:
"How do I do more pushups?"
Whether for personal reasons or to pass a fitness test, lots of people want to increase their pushup numbers!
Well, it depends on what level of fitness and strength you're currently at. You can kind of see this based on the number of pushups you can currently do:
1.) 0-5: Work on PREPARING yourself for pushups. This can be done by doing easier variation of pushups, like kneeling pushups or incline pushups. Remember that just because you can do a pushup doesn't necessarily mean it's the best way for you to practice them. Take your time on the easier variations and you may improve faster!
2.) 5-25: Work on developing your pushup STRENGTH. This is probably the stage where pushups will help you the most. Practice these 1-2 a week for 2-3 sets. Be safe, but push yourself HARD. Leave yourself plenty of rest time as you'll get stronger and more muscular during this stage. We grow when we rest, not when we train. So rest.
3.) 25-100+: During this stage, most would consider pushups to be an ENDURANCE exercise. Pushups won't necessarily be doing as much for your strength and muscle. You'll need more resistance for that. For more info on why this is, look up "Henneman's Size Principle." We need to work our larger muscle fibers with increasing resistance! If they don't activate, they aren't worked. You'll notice that you'll recover from your pushups a lot faster at this point. You can start training them 5-6 times a week for several sets. Proper breathing, technique, diet, and rest will have a large impact on your numbers.
    Hope this can help!

No matter where we are on our journey, there's always someone who's more advanced and also less advanced. A small setback or success can move us either way so it's important to be mindful of this when comparing to others. We are merely a reflection of one another. Should our circumstances be even slightly different, who knows where we'd be on our journey. Small changes over time can do tremendous things. A small, constant drip of water, given enough time, can wear through the thickest rock.

It took me about 5 months to get there from literally not being able to do five push-ups and I weighed about 230lbs at the time. Anyway I ended up injuring myself and life happened and I stopped working out. 2 months ago I got on the scale and weighed 280 lb and I couldn't even do a push-up I had no muscle. 2 months later I've lost about 12 lb and I'm gaining all that muscle back quicker than I thought. But anybody out there watching this I just want to say it's possible, it just takes commitment and you really need to want to be healthy. I'm turning 30 this year and I don't want to try reversing diabetes in 20 years, I'm going to proactively prevent diabetes with exercise and good diet. Usually I quit quite soon, because it's simply too painful. Wall pushups (and "wall pullups" from another video, the first one I saw) was an eye-opener for me. I can do about 10 normal pushups, but I _hate_ it and feel broken afterwards. Which means I stop after a couple of days. Hello again, I just commented on your pull-up video that brought me to this video. I can do many more push-ups than pull-ups, and will be working more on my pull-ups initially.
The only thing I have a comment about is for both the pull-up and push-up videos, even though you are talking to the very beginning people up to experienced individuals, you don't put a workout in the videos. You mention working hard once or twice a week for two or three sets, but you don't have that outlined.
For twice a week training, I would plan on doing the majority of pull-up or push-up workouts (there are always outside circumstances that you have to work around) on Tuesday and Thursday. I would do one or two warm up sets (even your isometric technique) then three sets of progressively more push-ups or three sets of pull-ups for each workout. Adjust your rest periods accordingly, but 60 to 90 seconds is a good time frame for strength workouts.
