Just to give you guys the characters: 谷 That’s master gǔ‘s surname. 谷师傅, as you would say in Chinese. Master Gu actually did come out with a reflection on his performance, so I will translate it soon. Also, for those of you wondering why Xu didn’t take on the Master himself, Xu needs surgery to fix one of his arms, so Xu cannot really exert too much force right now. In fact, I forgot to translate this, but part of the reason Xu was able to get the Master to show up was he put up some money. He basically told Master Gu: if you can beat a student of mine, you get 100,000 RMB of money. So Xu basically put up the money he was saving for his arm surgery to get the Master to show up.
Also, I have a followup video coming soon. The more I look at both Master Gu's social media, the more I see fascinating content to explain and analyze. Stay tuned!
He turned his brain into gǔ.
Whats funny is after the match Xu gave him some fine alcohol. Not the best for brain recovery 🤓🤓

Xu is more diplomatic now. So is your video commentary. I like it better now. 😂
By the way, you have excellent and flawless English. Have you always been in China?
Taichi master had gloves on. His chi couldnt flow out of his gloves. Thats why he lost. 😅
Before the fight Xu has ask the master, what is your choice? You want no gloves ,MMA gloves,we also ok, but you need to sign your consent on the contract😅
In the end the master choose the big boxing glove that effect him unable to shoot Hadouken.
Very good theory😁
1_Tai Chi man too OLD, 2_Tai Chi man got afraid, and forgot to use his Tai Chi skills!!! Tai Chi is OK if practiced with strength.
Appearantly plastic is not a good conductor of chi.
Not one with the universe.
The problem is that none of these 'masters' have never really been punched or been in a real fight.
a lot dont train for that..; so of course theyt will struggle, this is true
I agree. No one can learn how to fight without proper sparring and then actually compete. There are no tricks, no ancient knowledge or shortcuts. Fighting is a craft, not a philosophy.
Or, if they have, it’s been a *_looong_* time since.
Yeah, considering that I think the Tai Chi master really showed a lot of grit and determination. Getting hit is super tiring when you're not used to it. That is about as tough as they come from a novice boxing point of view.
Actually, getting hit is super tiring full stop!
They always get in the ring and throw punches like they've never been in a fight, or like they've never studied a martial art in their life.
I know right
yeh, Tai Chi is not really a quick reacting thing, but you would expect a 'Master' to at least have watched a fight on telly and have a better plan than that.
@@MrHumpity hahhahaaaaaaa 🤣
Training goes out the window after the first punch to the head.. that's why fight Training is important.
Because they never train with sparring just forms.
People who are serious about advancing their art or martial arts as a whole know that a challenger is the most valuable thing in the world to that cause. Competition is how we measure and discover ourselves.
Xu's credit score must be in the negatives now 😂😂😂
I kinda wonder how much it's recovered, but he's probably doing alright, now. He's much more chill and careful with his behaviour in this video.
He can probably only go into his local shop and that's it.
Has to travel to every fight by horseback now.
@@StimParavaneworth it!

It sure looked like the student went easy on the old guy - especially in the beginning.
He escalated it because the old guy wouldn’t back down
Also in the end. It could be much worse, if he goes all out
Maybe, but those early body shots, just drained his soul. Hit someone hard enough in the liver - and they belong to the shadow realm.
@@liberatumplox625Getting hit in the live won’t send you to the shadow realm, it’ll send you to the “I should have stayed in bed” realm.
Nah, its not a prize fight, for money, or some massive amount of honour involved, he went easy at first as he didnt want to fall to a lucky punch, he went harder after seeing he was winning easily and the guy was already dazed, he had the literal opposite motivation to what you saw, and to me its obvious. I think there is a lot of confirmation bias in how people see events like this, but watch again, the Tai Chi guy is dizzy from early on, has lost his balance, the thing tai chi guy should excel at.
Much respect to all parties involved! This is how love for your fellow martial arts practitioner and sportsmanship is supposed to be shown! Bickering and being a sore loser is not a good look…this is the way ,and this is what our children need to see from us as an example.
Tai Chi vs Ballet would be THE fight to watch
Tai Chi guy a little stronger than average old guy w no training. I give him credit for stepping in the ring.
I read that as "..for sleeping in the ring"

@@sampokemppainen3041 it is not about the art, it is about the artist. "It is not about the size of a dog in a fight, it's about the size of the fight in a dog".
Also, It is not about what you train, it is about how you train it. for example, if you train BJJ for competition (Musumeci style) you are not going to be able to use it in a real fight, but if you train it for self defense or for MMA it will look completely different and will include a lot of strikes (Royce gracie style)

Xu's rhetoric was about science and investigating martial arts using the scientific method, which helps backstop his stance against general negative response from the government. By claiming he's advancing the country's understanding of martial arts, it's harder to criticize him for going against traditional institutions.
The Chinese government will have a harder time messing with if he put it in that context. The Chinese government really hates face and it’s kinda their fault for making Chinese TMA as bad as it is due to their policies in the past.
Dong is a CIA agent his job is to make Chinese feel insignificant and Western culture is the Best
His problem is that he's always way above in weight class and just yeets himself at opponents in ways that one would not in a scenario in which martial arts are compared. his opponent wants to duel, while he just rams at opponents smaller than him. It would be like testing the efficiency of a bat by running at it with a truck.
@@zereimu in his original campaign, he had no need to be delicate - he didn’t see a problem with violently dismantling someone who made great claims of fighting ability. That’s within the domain of martial arts, as he saw it. It was a wake-up call
I don't see him going against other traditional martial arts, though
I find it funny that when arguing with a lot of these types of people they will say mma, kickboxing, BJJ, etc. are "just sports" and that if there were no rules their TMA would dominate. But when you actually see these challenge matches, they are the ones that request the most restrictive rule set possible! Lol. Because they inherently realize that getting rid of rules would help the so-called sport fighter more than it would help them.
Well, thank you for a wonderful job vlogging this! Love this.
I think Tai Chi guy did better than I expected. He definitely F’d around and found out, which is more than his peers. Hopefully he learned something.
More so the boxer is not that good
He did. He admitted on camera that the fight was fair and that he lost because he wasn't as good of a fighter.
"..F’d around and found out.."
Nah.
Straight up sparring and pressure testing are not "Fng around."
No need for you to mischaracterize and put this in a bad light with a cheap put-down for no reason - that would be Fng around.
Nah...I see better ones without calling themselves masters
The young man should say : "You are not the same age"! I wonder why they arranged such fight.
Actually having a guard position puts this Tai Chi master in the top 5% of Tai Chi masters. No sarcasm here, he actually performed really well compared to all the other Tai Chi masters I've seen.

It’s the fact that nobody learns taiji’s actual combat anymore because so many people are obsessed with theory and fantasy other than actual combat and lose, I’m a practitioner of Wudang wushu or Wudang taiji and Wudang Quan, and I know it works but I don’t fight like people think it is used. I use it with common sense. Every martial art has there strength and weakness. That is why we must mix styles together and create our own mma. People mistake mma as specific style but in reality it is a idea of multiple styles, that is why Bruce Lee’s philosophy Jeet Kune do is the father of MMA because it was the first idea of mixing styles
@tom3413 for real, CZcams is full of cringy comments or videos about street fights and how you can never prepare for one. Then what follows is pseudo expert conversations about nothing but romantic ideas of what a street fight is lmao. Also always at least one guy who makes a ‘no one can defeat my gun’ comment. About football players I do think they can make decent fighters though. I played rugby only a couple of trainings and that gave me an edge against my non fighting trained friends. Jon jones even said that he’s lucky his football pro brother never joined the ufc or it would have been over for him. I’m
Not saying there aren’t football players that overestimate their abilities but they have potential imo. There’s a lot of people who overestimate themselves. Have seen footage of soldiers poorly fighting civilians on the street in their day off. False confidence is everywhere. On the other hand potential is everywhere as well. Have seen footage of cricket players fighting really well on the streets in self defense.

great to hear xu has become more diplomatic. this is the correct approach. when the facts are on your side, the fastest resolution is patiently and methodically working through the issues. younger people trying to navigate these conflicts tend to look for a quick solution, while also failing to realise they're not very good at negotiation. they also tend to be unnecessarily defensive, which manifests as aggression and fake confidence. xu has realised that he's holding all the cards, and it's a lot more fun to be nice to people
Thank you for this lesson, eloquently stated.
This actually helped me on something I’ve been going thru, thx so much

i don't know why you think you could last toe to toe with a trained sport fighter. you might look good for the first 10 sec, maybe even a minute, but after that you're just going to gas out. there's no way you'll be able to keep up with a physically conditioned fighter who only trains to fight.

I love how in Tai Chi one of the principles is balance, yet he fell 2 times alone in less than 1 minute.
True even my Rooting Principles are In Practice Better Than His. And it's literally the only thing I've Practiced From Tai Chi outside of Flowing Odd Angle Strikes. And I'm sure I'm Trash Compared to the Real Deal.
That's the difference between only practicing by yourself or in coordinated exercices vs practicing against live resistance. The moment you add the chaos of the fight, all technique goes out of the window if you're not used to it
Yo why did i reply in different comment section

Xu Xiaodong is going great work. There will be a time where his contribution to combat sports is appreciated for what it is
I have respect for the TC GM. He tested his skills in combat. That takes courage and he should be saluted.
Tai chi has its fighting style. Putting gloves on is like you tie a taekwondo master's legs and hope that he will win when fighting with a boxer. That's insane.
He offered the guy to not wear gloves though. Taiji dude figured he could make it happen and he was wrong.
I think this guy is the best of all the Tai Chi masters I have seen against Xu Xiaodong or his fighters. He would win against all the other masters.

Even Donnie Yen was humble enough to end his fight with Tyson in a semi draw.
Semi draw? Basically he had the fight end with the timer running out just as Tyson was about to deal a killing blow -- he practically gave Tyson the win.
Are we talking about what I'm thinking about? Like, a scripted, choreographed, rehearsed scene in a movie both were acting in?
Ip Man lost in that movie. Tyson uppercut would have killed him whereas that flick kick to Tyson’s groin would have just given Tyson temporary pain (if it even struck the right place). Slack in pants can block groin kicks. Even kicking the wrong area of the groin would negate the kick.
@@alexchen5811you forget Ipman literally paralyzed a guy's arm with a pressure point technique, for all we know that groin kick could've given Tyson permanent testicular torsion

Major props to the tai chi master and xu for respecting the guy.
Honestly one of my favorite parts of this video was the little mandarin lesson at the beginning. Great video bro
Questionning his martial art is more painful that taking punches, that's why he keeps going
People familiar with the science of fighting disciplines in my experience, do not recognize Tai Chi as an effective style against more aggressive forms of combat. Tai Chi is extremely beneficial to the practitioner who looks to improve body and mind.
The tai chi GM showed great courage and discipline. He was willing to test his style against another which takes courage.
I bet that wasn't even one of Xu Xiaodong's experienced students.

I'm a Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut guy, that was already fighting prior to learning kung fu. My father and older brother were black and brown belts in karate. So i grew up on knowing martial arts as early as i can walk. So, when I first joined my teachers school, i knew how to fight and they were shocked because i was in there sparring them on the first day. But, looking like this older guy, you can see he never had a real fight in his life and he's only going on the notion that tai chi works, theoretically. but you can see, this guy has no guard, doesn't know how to move around, not dodging or evading. if you're going to take your martial art into the fighting realms, one, you need to know how to fight first. two, make sure your basic punches, blocks and kicks are up to par. three, SPAR. Spar light, spar heavy, and spar often. This is why i make my own students do and is the reason why we did well on our very first ever match in the Muay Thai community.
I got the impression the student could have overwhelmed the tai chi master. Kudos to him for cooking his instead of just immediately blasting him away. Kudos to the tai chi master for being willing to test himself against others. Most traditional masters won't.
this was great! My teaching in Shanghai was always interested in how modern fighting and bagua or tai chi would do against each other. I think what has been lost is the practical application of these arts. they have turned it into a dance and have forgotten how to apply the pieces in a fight, and have lost timing all together. I hope more masters explore this. relearn it. this master was brave and dedicated to getting in there and explore and be willing to find out what he doesn't know, what doesn't work. now go back and rethink it. play with it, adjust, and try again.
Damn, the "master" dropped his fancy guard real fast after eating a couple punches
Thanks for sharing. Xu is such a good guy.
That "master" doesn't even know to tuck his chin when he takes a fall? Would have been smooth knocked out on a sidewalk or street from that head contact to the ground.
Yeah. That fall could have been an instant KO.
It seems that in china now, "Master is a word used loosely). What about all that " groundedness" they teach in tai chi. We should have seen so.e of that here!
almost like he practices a very very slow dance instead of fighting
Who in God’s name is delusional enough to make a claim like that?!
this "master" just experienced his 1st sparring match in his life.
Love to see that both sides respect each other even though Xu Xiaodong already know how it ends. This is pretty civil way, no need to add insult to a losing opponent.
They should go gloveless, as the gloves give an advantage to the boxer for both blocking, and hand protection; it would likely still go down the same way, but it would show technique vs technique more readily. The self defense version of boxing is bare knuckle, and requires different techniques so you don't break your hands, which happens to a lot of boxers outside of the ring.
It turns into a bas ruten bloodbath. Not a good idea.
Without practice the boxer will break his hands but still demolish the opponent, hitting him full strength with broken hands. I have seen it. Boxers hands will heal but its bad for the boxers career. Opponents face will be every shade of purple you can imagine and very bloody.
Gloveless doesn’t change anything. Maybe for this boxer because he’s not experienced enough lol but any really good amateur to professional it won’t change and outcome will be the same.
@@LondonPvP I already said the outcome would likely be the same, but Yes it would change a Lot of things. Have you fought boxers in and outside of the ring? The gloves are a huge advantage to the boxer.

He had to hone his approach, to navigate through bullshido minefield.
The fact he was in there with a boxer and stood any chance still says alot. The man ate a lot of good punches and gave back some of his own. Not everyone can say that. And he gets back up. I'm still impressed with this old man.
Taichi man watched all ip man movies and got so pumped he forgot how to punch.
People are clowning but guys...This Tai Chi master showed great compassion and restraint by not using his internal Chi powers which would have permanently injured or even killed his young less wise opponent. It was clear from the beginning that the master realized that an exhibition fight, clearly for no reason other than ego gratification, was not a place to truly unleash his power on a defenseless and foolish young man. Instead he wisely and bravely chose to take a beating himself rather than cause irreparable harm to a weaker man. He also knows that if western people ever saw the true power of internal MA that they would begin demanding to be taught these dangerous techniques and that well, we in the west just aren't ready for it. Better to let them mock what they aren't ready to understand than to unleash a bunch of barbarians trained in the art of chi on an already suffering world.
Excellent analysis, you also have to watch out for the masters that have “big bellies” that’s where they store their chi
You, sir, are a truly magnanimous individual.
Everyone knows that the chi is stored in the chi-balls
Lmao
A Tai Chi master is supposed to be wise for letting someone beat him up?
Not very wise or compassionate to himself.
The wisest thing would have been to not let rip on the internet with ego driven claims about being able to beat other people.

You can tell for the first 20 seconds Xu's student has his hands up, chin tucked and is carefully feeling out the Tai Chi Master.
Once he ate a couple of the Tai Chi Master's best shots and got a knock down against Tai Chi Master he just goes into play mode.
He knows Tai Chi Master can't hurt him and he can get whatever he wants.
His hands go down, chin in the air and just swinging freely (still nice footwork and head movement).
The clinches where his hands are at his side throwing wild hooks to the body would be punished by an instant uppercut or hook to the head by any 1st year boxing student, but he knows he's got nothing to fear.
The Tai Chi Master had good instincts to clinch each time he was getting lit up.
I give the Tai Chi Master credit for taking this fight even if it required potential money pay out.

tips to employees performing their duties can be considered an insult, to them and the business they work for. it can be misconstrued as thinking the business doesn't pay them enough. people take pride in their jobs and have some level of loyalty to their employer. so they could be insulted by a tip.

If you watched the interview the old guy gave that let to this fight, you will understand why he was so confident and agree to this fight.(he said he could take on Tyson and win because he is faster and Tyson’s 900 lbs punch has no effect on him)
Yep. Im translating some of that in my next video 😇
Damn, Xu Xiaodong is nice, after his student beats up the Taiji master, he still gives them gifts. What a polite way to end the fight! 😀
I just comment occasionally as participation I'm not making any claims one way or another.. I have heard it said that boxing styles vary from one country to another I remember tyson was going to fight one of the English champions of the day and tyson commented harshly as a fighter would as he's readying for his match that the English style was inferior or far old school as it compared to his style.. In this case I would say that this boxer could easily avoid that long guard with upper body movement while striking to the body and above in combinations that long guard should be of no consequence / oh and tyson did win the fight mentioned / Credit to anyone with training who is willing to professionally test their skills not every master is great just like not every fighter is great, and even that said sometimes luck is a factor aka murphy's law in this video case the boxer out matched the tai chi guy // Tyson vs Paul IF there are no behind the scenes agreements tyson could ko paul in round 1 if he's not running fast enough!! I would be shocked and suspicious if rd 4 is called . paul can Not take a punch from tyson
Depend of the Boxer Lennox Lewis showed the power and skill of the English Style.
@@DouglasGomesBueno-jw9lh Yes several years later.. Fighters adapt, make changes they as individuals must find ways of improving its always up to the individual if not they just fade away
@@supervisorone5960 doesn't play the age card my friends Lennox are more older than Tyson.
@@DouglasGomesBueno-jw9lh You are not making sense no one is talking about age! and Tyson is older than Paul..
just go away
@@07bently Yes during the first few yrs of training in anything you are only as good as your trainer.. If your trainer doesn't believe in jabs you will have a weakness with jabs,. In boxing I have seen work outs in which one guy wasn't allowed to use his hands he could only use upper body movement to avoid punches, so if a trainer never teaches this that person will get hit allot. This applies to anything in any style.. / I was asked in the past if I was a trainer, no I am not I have taken lessons for a few yrs in boxing and 3 MA not ground fighting however.
Just here to occasionally give a channel comment
Why do we always call these masters? Are they actual masters or claim they are or are they just experienced Tai Chi practitioners?
Tai chi guy was gassed out so quickly and loses balance so much.
They're masters at absorbing punches, apparently.
They're not master and never claimed it.
As always, real masters don't just wander on gyms and challenge sport fighters.
He's a regular eldery who know tai chi, maybe teach some classes to old people, and wanted to try it out
@@aura-pprenti2301 I agree. The video titles and even the commentator seem to always use this descriptive which amplifies their actual abilities. It should be "Tai Chi guy walks into Zu Xiaodong's gym..."
Calling them masters is click bait.
I said IT before & i say it again, wu xu is good for show only!
And it is never tough enough for combat!
But, we respect the tai chi master for his sportsmanship!
While the outcome was what we expected, I'll say that the taichi master did better than I thought he would. It still appeared that he didn't have much experience fighting/sparring. If he did, it looks like it was only with those within his own school/style.
Shoutouts to XuXiaodong for being diplomatic about the whole thing. Still got his point across and the gifts were a nice gesture.
For an old guy to be willing to fight a young guy shows a lot of heart.
Not only that. I admire the spirit of the Taichi guy who despite having no fight experience but still dare to defend the honor of Chinese TMA.
Doing it for the sake of fraud martial arts shows a lack of brain.
@@kenirawadi4689yes, he did a good job .....
And Tai Chi was never made for fighting. Two different things you have to compare. Math master, chess master are all masters, do you fight them with boxer to proof they aren’t really masters? Get real!
They both look like they just stepped into a ring a week ago, so much for martial arts!
Where's the master? I see an old guy flailing his arms. It's exactly what I thought it would be.
That's sadly how most TMA masters look in sparring/fighting.
@@kullenberg
No
Only fake masters lol
In china masters dontcsll themselves masters
Martial arts waa a private thing
I appreciate Xiaodong's new friendly attitude. While his victories might be less satisfying now, it's more respectful towards his opponents and will benefit him in the long run
Boxer bro was serving a buffet of fists that day and tai chi man jumped the line to get them.
Xu xiaodong is now humble also does not want to deal with ccp fawkery.
I doubt many of these masters have any practical experience, They think just because they have mastered the techniques they can jump in a ring and beat people.
Thats why in some martial arts schools, getting a black belt is only the start of the journey, meant to signify someone has learnt all the moves, but not skills.
Xu is a bloody legend and extremely brave
Tai Chi harness the power of nature and perfected with serenity.
The Tai Chi master here forgot to harness that power, and perfectly sleeps...
in Serenity... 😂😂😂✌️.
I predict Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul will be a less conclusive fight than expected. A couple big conditions not being talked about much: the fight will be only 8 two-minute rounds; and they will be using big ol' 14 oz. gloves.
I also have a feeling we won't get a spectacular finish but I hope we're wrong 😁
It's another clown show and whoever pays for it is...
it will be a tie.
It's a freakshow fight and there's now way to predict it, which is the entire appeal. 2 minute rounds favor Tyson and 14oz gloves favor Paul. Tyson is obviously juiced to the gills. It's basically a fight between Paul and how much Tyson's reflexes and stamina have decayed(enormously) at age 57. Paul is basically fighting a name. The guy he's actually fighting doesn't have anything to do with the boxer Mike Tyson from 1986. I'm going to say 95% chance Paul wins a boring decision with a 5% chance Mike knocks him out in round 1 or two, with a 65% chance that I'm totally wrong. I don't think Paul will actually try to KO Tyson. People don't give Paul enough credit. Strip away his obnoxious personality and he's a green, cruiserweight prospect, which I think is still enough to beat an ancient Tyson. The quality of Paul's opponents are better than what most 10 fight boxers have faced.
