Such iconoclasm, such grandeur, such an improbable cosmic landscape full of darkness, light, fear and wonder and above all mystery, with blasts that plunge you into a trance followed by sudden changes that wake you up, eyes wide and quivering eyebrows. I've been listening to this every now and then for ages and still hear new subtleties.. 🐾😺
As someone who left Czechoslovakia in 1968 I didn't even know they existed until I moved back to CSFR in 1991. At my 1st job, I would pass under an overpass that had graffiti that said "The Plastic People of the Universe." I asked about it at work and they all said "oh, just some stupid 1960s band." "Nothing to worry about." Well, it was as if I was in telepathic communication where my friend from the USA sent me a tape, and a letter where he said "dude, you GOTTA listen to this!" and I was so glad I did. So, although I myself was born in Czechoslovakia, it was my American friend who turned me on to them. I would never have found out about them because I had a pretty good job and none of THOSE people were into that kind of music, and they certainly never played music like this on any of the radio stations, even post-1989.
Fuck yea
Glory to God
Read The power of the powerless and see what they were all about.Havel was a huge fan of this freedom loving group.
@@outwest100az I know Havel was a big fan of them. I saw a short 1970s clip of him while totally drunk saying what a great band they were, on Czech TV. I can't believe they showed that, because this was while he was still president.
Dvacet (Twenty) lyrics:
If you're 20 yo today
it makes you wanna throw up
If you're 40 yo
it makes you wanna throw up some more
Only those sclerotic 60 yo old
can go to bed peacefully.
Wow I just stumbled onto these guys experience I had listening to it the saxs is out of this world great band
Zácpa (Constipation) lyrics:
Oh, constipation is torturing me
with its cruel favour
It feels like i have a stone in my belly
and fire in my bladder
I think my bowels are rotting away
or rather fuse together by the muck
Gases are coming out of my mouth
sometimes also thick liquid
Oh, constipation is torturing me
with its cruel favour.
Francovka (Czech brand of rubbing alcohol) lyrics:
I bought myself Francovka
It cost me 30 crowns
Now i'm gonna try
if it's better than rum
Half percent of menthol
i'm burping it up and down
Seventy percent of alcohol
is weighing down on me really hard
I bought myself Francovka
It's cheaper than rum
My brain is starting to turn into mush because of all that drinking.
Thanks for translating!
I don't know what they're saying but I can feel it man. "Stop livin lies!!!"
So happy to 've found this. Beautiful music.
Found the band on a BBC documentary about "The Lost World of Communism". Excellent!!!
And here we see why Mr Frank Zappa adored the Czech people.
Favorites from the 70's!
Can't actually remember where i bought this album back in the day, i think it was a wee weird cracking head shop down from the back of the Edinburgh museum. Brilliant album, always made me think how lucky we were compared to Czechkoslovaki at the time. Thanks 😎✌
We're Egon Bondy's Happy Hearts Club... banned!
It's wonderful to be here
It's certainly a thrill
You're such a lovely audience
We'd like to take you home with us
We'd love to take you home...
Magické noci (On magical night) lyrics:
Time has begun on magical night
Koch gonna lose his mind over it
Time has begun on magical night
We live in Prague
that's there
Spirit will reveal itself one day
We live in Prague
that's there
That's there, not where
My son asked me earlier "dad if you could be in a band, what would you play?" I think I would be the guy playing sax on this song, I fucking love it!! I love the Plastic People they are one of my favorites of all time.
This has come to be one of my favorite albums of all time. Thank you so much for uploading it! I love it!
Q
One of the best things
Excellent
LOVE this band. THANKS for uploading the album.
Wow! This is far OUT❤
Píseň brance (Recruit song) lyrics:
Why would i join the army?
i really wonder
for fucks sake
bloody hell
As if civilian life hasn't already been more than enough for me.
Toxika (Drugs) lyrics:
I'm a victim of substance abuse
It should be a bummer but it's funny
I drink beer and i eat pills
I'm barely able to fall asleep
Tomorrow morning i'm gonna return empty bottles
Julia will help me with it.
Presne. Zivot je k zbliti.
Nádhera! Úplná rozkoš!!!
I read about this band in the 90s. Until CZcams I had no way to hear them. The future is wonderful
I like it, bro! Thanks for sharing!
Ghese were far more than just great musicians. They were very brave people despite huge oppression from the Communist/Socialist government installed after the Soviet led invasion back in August 69, they still managed to make some wonderful. music , even they they were denied a license to perform, they still did underground gigs. Som eof us who have never lived under an authoritarian regime, don't know how lucky we are
More relevant than ever!!
Nikdo (Nobody) lyrics:
Nobody
Nobody
Nobody
Never
Anywhere
Got somewhere
I hope i'm not such a fool after all.
thanks you very very much
Nice album TY
Fantastic!
This was 2 years before the band were imprisoned. RIP Frank
superb stuff. one of my favs from east europe. thx for sharing.
Second that, brother.
+Rare Records Mail i love it too, but look at a map of europe. prague, which is where this band is from, is directly in the middle of berlin and vienna. and the czech republic is in pretty much the middle of europe, soooo......
ok, man, but notice when we, worldwidly, say about eastern europe countries, we much reffer about the (ex) iron curtain ones. sooo... vibes from down here.
what....you seriously dont know what people are talking about when they say" easterneurope'....are you American?
Actually, we know what we are talking about from OUR own (American) perspective. From our point of view, European countries who were once under Communist rule were considered "Eastern European Countries" and that includes "East Germany" even though Germany is Central European and now united. "Eastern Europe" was a POLITICAL concept here, and absolutely not a geographical concept. That's VERY important to understand. What's more, we in the USA have tremendous respect and admiration for The Plastic People of the Universe, who we know went to prison for simply creating music that was politically forbidden. This is an oppression that no United States rock band had ever had to endure. Certainly there were rock musicians who were sometimes persecuted by the police, but the act of making unauthorized music itself was never illegal. It is for this reason we can only admire and respect the Plastic People, for their courage, and their defiance, as well as their brilliant music. Thanks for your time and your understanding.
Awesome!
HAHAH, and the U.S thought our 70s psychedelic rock was trippy. Czechs do it better and WEIRDER
Germany too. The Krautrock scene is amazing.
my brains just been going 'the fuck is happening here'
💓💓💓
The Cat loves it..
Haha. I was listening to Apocalypse Bird and my cats started looking at me funnily.

thanks for sharing bro !!
A z Prahy teda nejsem !!!
great lyrics I guess🙄 hypnotic beats, trippy cool
the first song sounds like something off of a Frank Zappa album.
The Plastic People did get their name from a Zappa song by the same name. Milan loved Zappa and the Velvet Underground. Amazing band who really took it to their horrible government. Nothing but respect and love to the Plastic People for having the balls to speak up. Everyone could do themselves a favor and listen to the Plastic People and understand them.
what's not to like a Czech band influenced by Captain Beefheart and VU. Hell, wasn't until 10 years later US bands started listening them. Zappa maybe. the story how they got those LP's, pretty cool I bet.
my hat is always off to PPU, Milan Simecka, JAn Patocka, Charter 77 etc.
Frank Zappa's fav band.
Is that really true?
It's probably not true. It's unlikely, Zappa knew much about the band before he visited Czechoslovakia in 1991. The Plastic People Of The Universe didn't even exist then, there was only side-project of some band's members called Půlnoc (Midnight). Zappa did meet them in Prague hotel, as they both played secret gig there.
@@unimobunka en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Plastic_People_of_the_Universe The band was formed in 1968.
Incredible
kope-a-setic...kinda like a Zappa lp but in a diff language...thanks
Its funny you say that. Zappa, Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd were the reasons behind such amazing obscure music. These guys had to bootleg those albums in order to listen to them cause communism sucks. What they (plastic people) went through to make music is so sad but you can hear it resonate in their music. I love them and I wish more Americans (well people in general) would just listen to them.
This is amazing
came from combodian music. one article says the same thing happened to the plastic people of the universe, but the difference is they suvived but those musicians back in combodia died in kmer rouge...
Thank you for this!! Well, I just bought this on vinyl from discogs. But did I buy a bootleg? Is it true that the band members didn`t know that this lp was produced? Did the members at least get some sort of pay? A friend from Norway.
the Mike Hunt (kind of) joke has reached Norway? oh, us Amerikkkans...
John, you`re the first person to "crack the code".
@@mikehunt8992 we have better ones now like Heywood Jahblomi, Richard Kramden, Richard Gaezinyah and my personal favorite...Hugh G. Rexion...enjoy
Their recordings were smuggled outside Czechoslovakia and then released on vinyl in Canada by their former member, Paul Wilson. There was no way to pay the band, as the borders and even the mail were heavily controlled.
@@unimobunka Thanx for the info., my friend. I did not know that.
Sofa king good!
How did they become so advanced when they were allowed to be exposed to so little?
Fondue Fangboner Frank Zappa
Cause there was always an underground trading/sharing of western records circling around comunity of freaks open to experimentation, some of them musicians classic/jazz educated.
they used to smuggle records and etch them onto x-ray plates, circulate them in this format you see. Not the best sound quality but does the job
Reminds me of dying.
In a good way, I hope.
Sounds like a bad fever dream…
Lots and lots of dissonance, tritones and atonal melodies. Can't fathom how much life must've sucked for Czechoslovaks back then, but this music gives me a little taste of the mood of the time.
My family enjoyed it, a lot of fun, every year vacations both abroad and at home, lot's of rock n roll music and great movies.
@@lukebruce5234 taky trochu kriminálu,obušků do hlavy....
Your comment nails it. This was the period of so-called 'normalisation', which was undoing Dubcek's reforms and driving the country into deeper and graver socialism. 'Oh, this is normal? Here's some "normal" music that captures the feeling.'
🌱🌸💛😀

Prave si citam Svehlovu knihu Magor a jeho doba :)
Portisehead
běž volit pitomče a prosím zavol správně
So, I enjoy the psychedelic genre and I don't speak Czechoslovakian, I understand Frank Zappa, who I enjoy, liked this band, but I'm having a hard time with this. It may be because I don't understand the lyrics, but the music is, I don't honestly know, I guess you can't like everything.
if you can get into the zappa-produced captain beefheart album "trout mask replica", you should have no problem whatsoever with "egon bondy".
this sounds so similar to early zappa/mothers stuff, it`s ridiculous.
porad aktualne
How do you think the band would respond to you simpering about copywrite? ""I'll do what you say if you have legal authority" was the antithesis of their message, you are WAY OFF.
Punk didn't come from UK or 'merica.....

Pokud clovek neni alkoholik, vyhulenec, vysnupanec, fetak nebo toxikoman, tak tuhle muziku proste neni schopen POCHOPIT!!
Mark E Smith fans would agree
Politically underground Russian Band of the 60's and beyond modeled after the Mothers of Invention!
*Czech*, not Russian.
Czech not Russian. Do some research before posting shit.
Underground Czech band of the 70´s you meant
Czech, not russian!
