Though it was produced at a time when Psychedelic Rock pioneer Roky Erickson was struggling to cope with drugs and life on the outside, he hit form on his first post Elevators album-proper, 1981's "The Evil One". Produced over a period of two years by Stu Cook, from Creedence Clearwater Revival, it's a masterful collection of songs about zombies, demons, vampires and, yes, even the "Creature With The Atom Brain". These tracks, inspired by schlock sci-fi and horror movies and colored by Roky's distinctive, high-pitched vocal and squealing guitar, are among the maverick performer's best.

I feel like so many people sleep on this album. On the surface you think lyrics are just cheesey horror movie tropes. But they hold up to deeper readings. Think of "I walked with a Zombie" as a comment on Roky's time in mental hospital....

13th Floors were better than his solo career
Roky wasn’t really “struggling to cope with drugs…” He struggled to deal with mental illness and side effects of the powerful prescription medications his doctors prescribed, plus the after effects of multiple shock therapy treatments while imprisoned at the Rusk State Hospital in Rusk, TX.
Most people really know nothing when it comes to depression,anxiety and mental illness. Toss a few pills back w/ booze, do some of this and that on the road for 10 + yrs. and it becomes your existence instead of lifestyle. And support is only as good as the company you've chosen.

As a youth, I visited a couple of people at the Rusk State Hospital with my grandfather. THE scariest place I've ever been. Reminded me of the concentration camp films from Nazi Germany.
Roky did indeed have troubles with self-medicating his condition. By all accounts he had a thing for speed and alcohol, and of course there's the LSD consumption of the 60's.
Probably the single greatest rock n' roll album ever conceived. Duane Aslaksen's guitar playing is phenomenal.

I never heard of Roky Erickson before. But I found "It's a cold night for alligators" to be one of the best rock anthems I never heard of. I'm happy I discovered Roky's music, it's the best I've discovered in a long time!
I found out about Rocky Erickson when I was a kid and was watching a comedy show on tv that had musical segments in between, and they played Cold night for alligators. My mind was totally blown at 13 years old

i play this loud on the lofisytem here...theres a load of christian college students down on the track below off to that same college drifting by.... taking the excuse to stop and chat amongst themselves in groups easy to see they listening deep to this stuff.... roky had the gifted ability of turning heads.... filling in those spots where organized religion fails.... many thanks for the upload

Such an incredible album (and so many great classic monster movie references!); Roky is just as worthy as Alice Cooper or Rob Zombie for kings of horror rock.

That's the incredible Duane 'Bird' Aslaksen. He covered a lot of bases with his style & really complimented Roky's music. This record owes a lot, I think to his leads.
@@RavnerRavner Some of the guitar-like sounds are also Billy Miller on the electric autoharp, such as the opening intro to “Two-Headed Dog”. He played the instrument in a Texan psychedelic rock band called Cold Sun prior to this. Worth checking out their album “Dark Shadows”. They formed around the time of The 13th Floor Elevators’ breakup.
He had such style.... all of his schizophrenic and idiosyncratic thoughts and writings were sensational and downright legendary....🍻

I've heard Roky in an 1980 interview call this album 'five symbols' and I just now noticed the 5 pink symbols embedded in the cover art, lower right.
I wonder if that was a play on the “Four Symbols” name many people gave to Led Zeppelin’s fourth album.

If I remember rightly, those symbols were on the label of the UK version as well as the sleeve, so they probably are the album title, BUT, how to pronounce them!? The UK sleeve is the one used here - the US release was called The Evil One' had a different cover, and had a different track listing, which was why I shot off and bought a copy when I got the chance.
New discovery of this fine album for me. Was watching a film called Scary Movie from 1991 about a guy who loses his mind inside a makeshift haunted house attraction and "I Walked With a Zombie" played during the end credits so had to look up this album. This album is an Absolute Stunner. "Click Your Fingers" and "Two Headed Dog" are massive standouts on this! Some rock music singers have definitely stolen Roky Erickson's vocal style, namely Jack White and the Guns & Roses singer for definite starters. Like @StoneMeadowOfDoom mentioned in his comment below, "Stone Cold Classic".

Some say they like more the 60s elevators stuff…I like both or this more than the elevators actually. It’s not to compare. totally different kind of music. And with the knowing and acknowledge of his terrible experience at a very young age it’s interesting and painful to listen and watch him. Makes him a tragical kind of hero.
Elevators were amazing. Roky solo material is moreso.....absolutely phenomenal.
