  • In this landscape photography video I talk you through my favourite images from this year and why they made my top 21. Not necessarily all of them particularly technically brilliant, some of them are very much to do with location and circumstance. But I hope you will find them enjoyable nonetheless.
    Also, I reveal details of a print giveaway and my new Facebook group: / m43landscapephotography
    Full res images from this video: dgriff.gallery/favourite-land...
    If you'd like to learn more about the Anglesey, Snowdonia and North Wales places I visit for my landscape photography, you can see full details on my website in my Location Guides section at: dgriff.gallery/location-guides/.
    To join me for landscape photography workshops, personal tuition or guiding in the mountains have a look over this page: dgriff.gallery/tuition/.
    I get asked a lot about the equipment I use. As I’ve typed up countless replies and links and lists for friends and viewers, I’ve now set it all out definitively here: dgriff.gallery/gear/.

    As someone who lives near Llanberis, and lucky enough to be able to enjoy the benefits of living in such a beautiful area, I can honestly say Griff, your images are simply outstanding, and I can't understand why I haven't seen your channel before on YT. Thank you for sharing, from a happy new subscriber.

    Hi David, the "No Sponsors-No Ads" approach is greatly appreciated. I've been watching your videos for quite some time, and will gladly help spread the word through my own social media links, as limited as that may be. HAPPY NEW YEAR! As for your print contest, I rather like LLYN Y DYWARCHEN, RHYD DDU, the print with the stone wall running from the left foreground to the lone tree in the middle distance. It's a beautiful image that sings of Wales to me. While we have mountains, lakes, and rivers here in Yukon, Canada, stone walls are simply non-existent. Sorry to hear that you've left Flickr, as I find it a great forum for sharing images and seeing images from other's too, but sharing more exclusively on your own website does make finding your work more of an intentional thing, and that makes sense to me too. Cheers.

      Many thanks for watching and commenting, Christopher. Much appreciated. And many thanks for sharing my stuff. Sorry about leaving Flickr, it certainly has a lot to like about it, but I just felt it was getting too much maintaining so many social media channels. 😊👍

    3 observations: 1) I love number 11, my favourite by far. 2) The majority(?) on the EM5 - the best camera is the one you have with you... and 3) Totally agree about settings, with modern lenses diffraction is not the bogey-man it's made out to be. In the days of film we hardly ever heard about diffraction, it's only with digital sharpness that it's become noticeable as an issue. Chill folks!

    I just discovered your channel when I searched for Toronto Lakeshore Photography. I then checked out this video and your work is amazing. I am getting a car in 15-20 days (knock on wood, pandemic delays don't continue) and you've inspired me to get up nice and early to capture the Toronto skyline. I especially love your woodland and mountain images. Subscribed!

    Beautiful images. I'm glad I went over to your website to check the images in full resolution. They're beautiful. On CZcams it didn't do them justice. blwyddyn newydd dda, David really enjoyed your images ,and your narrative ,two standouts for me being the snaking old dry stone wall and the derelict cottage, interesting exif data on the side of each image , the Em5iii was quite prominent including the superb image taken in the forrest with the rocks......a great collection, best wishes for 2022

      Hello Cliff. Yes I tend to always carry about the nice lightweight EM5, usually with the quite useful 14-150mm 'kit' lens. It's a great little combo and with the EM5mk3 haveing identical innards to the EM1mk2 I'm not missing out on sensor or processor quality. I only take out the EM1 and pro glass on specific location shoots. 😊👍

    f22 is the winner in my book ... pushing the level of something doesn't make it wrong as you said they wouldnt you do if you couldnt i think people are just scared of what they dont know or try. or just take the word of other as gospel followed by red sunset, love all the mono done, you should do more of them on grey dull light days (soft box clouds moments). You can be surprised what Light room or Photoshop can do with add on colours filters. beach with dark cloud im sure had pig in the top right corner. See u on FB ill try to spread the word

    Great images although those of Lyn Dywarchen brought both good and bad memories coming back to me. 10 years ago I came down from the coast where I live and eventually arrived there and took a few photos on the Sony camera I had at the time. On the way back down I slipped and broke both bones in my left leg. Thanks to great work at Ysbyty Gwynedd I now live with the Dywarchen titanium and screws in my leg. Doesn’t stop me photographing though.

    David happy to share episode 182 with a lot of Aussies on Facebook. I think your solution to the CZcams algorithm is admirable- you and your supporters are in control. A very nice rundown of your favourite images. I appreciate the commentary as it helps to add context to the shots. I won't choose a fave as there are so many and it matters little what I think anyway. I am happy to share with my dozen or so IG followers 😀 I appreciate that you have removed all adverts but you may someday find that you need to work your way back into the YT algorithm and I wouldn't be bothered if you turn them back on. Have a great 2020 David. Cheers, Jeff

      Hi Jeff, let me start by wishing you and yours the very best for the New Year. And with regards to CZcams advertising I've probably made a rod for my own back because I can hardly switch them on later having opened my last few with a specific statement decrying advertising interruptions! But in all honesty I don't think I would ever get to the point where, in the scheme of things, the amount of advertising revenue I could ever hope to achieve on a regular basis would make it worthwhile switching them back on! Of course, should I end up competing with the likes of Tom Heaton I might just switch them on and retire from my business interests, and be damned!! 😂👍

I find myself agreeing with you re camera and lens capabilities. With the software available to us now we/I are/am no longer hampered by perceived imperfections in IQ. So good to see such great images captured from Olympus micro 4/3rds equipment, it always seems to receive such a rough ride from the ‘ officiando’s ‘ !! My fave would be the derelict cottage within the quarry or second best the last image as I believe that might be the Idwal slabs over there on the left for which I remember vividly scaling from base to summit on a very wet Autumnal afternoon ! Keep the vids coming please David as they are very inspirational.

    Have a good year and we are looking forward to more images from the mountains and the RPS project.

    I absolutely adore your images! Although my choice would be one of beautiful Anglesey, the imagine which means the most to me is number 19. In October my godson got married and the happy couple honeymooned in the Lakes. If I were lucky enough to be selected I would give them that as a wonderful reminder. I will share your website on my Facebook page, wishing you a very happy new year, and I’m looking forward to more images ♥️

    Hi Dave, found you through the pubcast. So glad too what a beautiful selection of photography!
    I've shared you to my Instagram stories, although with such a small following I don't know how much it will help. If my name came out the hat I'd have to chose the beautiful shot y gatn, Nantlle.
    Looking forward to following your journey.

    Hi Dave, Nice to see some of those images again. In truth, I'm pretty narrowband on social media, but have shared as best I can .. i expect that many others will give you better coverage than I ever could. So don't worry about putting me in the hat for a print, much as I'd love any one of them particularly the Bovines in silhouette, it'd be rather unfair on the other viewers ... and to be entirely honest, I need no incentive to tell folk about your good works, I do it willingly every chance i get. your work is always a good watch , and all the more welcome without intrusive ads.

    Thx for sharing your images … amazing as always. Am I correct in assuming that the panoramic images you shared are crops from a single image and not stitched panos? Happy new year and I’m looking forward to your work in 2022. Thx, Frank

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 2 lety

      Hello Frank, thank you so much for watching and being good enough to make contact. I really appreciate it. To answer your question, you are quite right none of these images were multiple exposure panoramas. As it happens, I don't create many of those. Not because I have any particular aversion to them, but that I rarely find that my subjects don't really warrant that approach to composition. By their very nature, panoramas rarely provide a single point of focus for the viewer's eye to rest. Additionally, they can be difficult to get away from the obvious two dimensional limitations of photography which my personal style is always looking to overcome by creating as much '3D depth' as possible in most of my images. 😊👍

  • @Prashant.Khapane
    @Prashant.Khapane Před 2 lety +1

    Interesting choice of the final image. The image on its own is brilliant. But for some reason it didn’t feel like part of the portfolio of 19/20 images before that

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 2 lety

      That's a very fair point. It most certainly isn't the sort of thing that I regularly shoot, and perhaps that's partly why I decided to include it as it made something of a change from my regular work. And you also make a good point about it participating in a portfolio. If I'd been curating a coherent exhibition it most certainly wouldn't have made the cut, but since my self-imposed brief for this video was just the images which I like the best when looking back at 12 months of photography, as opposed to a named collection, hopefully I got away with it! 😁👍

  • @iqueque
    @iqueque Před 2 lety +1

    Great shots, all of them. I am fascinated to see that half or more were shot on the 14-150 prior to moving to the 12-40. Do you notice a substantial difference in quality? I am interested in the former for the reduction in bulk and weight when used on long day or overnight hikes. I also have the 12-40 and 40-150 lenses and love them for most occasions when I don’t have to carry them for too long.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 2 lety

      Ah I think my choices might have slighly mislead you about how I use the various lenses. i haven't really switched as such. I was always using Pro glass in some form, but as a rule I use the EM5 / 14-150 as my everyday carry combination and they're always with me. So it wasn't a 'swtich' as such, it was just that I happened to pick quite a few images with that combination from earlier in the year. 😊👍

    Thanks David ,great set of images . BUT a few with ( MZ 14-150) is that a typo or should it be 40-150 my go to lens also.Happy new year and will join the FB group ,

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 2 lety

      Hello Roger, no, that isn't a typo. My ultralightweight every day carry is the EM5 mk3 coupled with the 14-150 f/4 - 5.6 mkII kit lens. I do, of course, use the 40-150, and like you I am a huge fan of its capabilities. But I tend to reserve my collection of pro glass for specific location sessions as I find it a little heavy duty to carry about when walking the dog or on a day-to-day basis. So, since I rarely leave the house without a camera, and my lightweight combo works really well. And as you see, produces some images with which I am very happy. 😊👍

      Thanks so much for watching, very glad you enjoyed it. Although my own study of geology came to a close approximately 40 years ago, my understanding is that the main Snowdon massif is indeed part of an anticline / syncline system originating from the Ordorvician period with the main axis running NW to SE through the summit and the second highest peak, Garnedd Ugain. Of course, the topography of today is also a product of substantial Quaternay glaciation. 😊👍
