  • In this video I introduce a new landscape photography project which I'll be undertaking and sharing with you over the next year or so. I also talk about a new format for my CZcams channel. Still featuring landscape photography from Snowdonia & Anglesey, but presented slightly differently from earlier videos. And with more processing insights and varied content.
    My detailed location guides: dgriff.gallery...
    If you'd like to learn more about the Anglesey, Snowdonia and North Wales places I visit for my landscape photography, you can see full details on my website in my Location Guides section at: dgriff.gallery/....
    To join me for landscape photography workshops, personal tuition or guiding in the mountains have a look over this page: dgriff.gallery....
    I get asked a lot about the equipment I use. As I’ve typed up countless replies and links and lists for friends and viewers, I’ve now set it all out definitively here: dgriff.gallery/....

    The reduced flow of videos over recent times has helped wean us off your traditional fare as you have debated with yourself your future direction. Whilst I will miss them, your new sense of excitement will more than compensate. I wish you every success with your early New Years resolution- not that any of your genuine regulars have any doubts that DG FRPS will surely result. What a superb put down to the sole very strange comment. Good luck

      Many thanks Roger, always appreciate your very generous support. As you will see in my response to other comments on this video whilst the new channel direction makes it easier for me to create regular content there will still most definitely be plenty of location based videos from hikes and days out. It's just that the new direction allows me to keep the content flowing when I am unable to devote the time and concentration to video work when it detracts from my stills photography. Many thanks again for watching. 😊👍

      Thanks a lot, Robin, I appreciate you taking the time to make contact. The direction you are taking the channel sounds good to me and will be informative to many people. Doing a project is always a good idea, giving clear aims to the photographer, as it is doing with you in regards to getting a distinction (ARPS)? Not had anything to do with them, it has been the BIPP and the Guild of Photographers for me, different beasts to the RPS. However the three I have mentioned, all have exacting standards that help push the quality upwards. The shot in the quarry with the hillside and low cloud, stunning.

    I admire you for what you said in the fact that you had 180 videos of very similar stuff (I know I have seen most of them and I enjoyed them all) and its time for a change, but that's a very difficult decision you have made David in going for a distinction from the RPS, I am a member too and have been for many years so welcome to the club! I don't like to blow my trumpet but I gained all three distinctions many years ago but it was one of my photography highlights of my long interest in photography, I am not a teacher so I am not qualified to say how you should go about things to get a distinction I am sure you have your own thoughts on that! but I will say a couple of things, make sure you enter in the right category and don't rush things, that's two of the biggest failures, just for the record I got the L...A...and the F....and from start to finish it took about three years, they were good years too having made many friends on the way! I completely changed my picture taking practices to get these distinctions. I hate to say it but this was in my film days when I developed my own films and printed my own pictures in my darkroom, I shared my darkroom with Fox Talbot yes it was really a long time ago! Thank you for this weeks blog and I wish you the very best with your plans....

      Hello Kevin, thank you so much for taking a look at my channel. Although I would have to say that Steve's is a cut above mine! With regards to the distinction, I haven't done much work on it yet, I probably only have seven or eight images towards the 21 that I need. But I'm waiting for the seasons to change as the locations that I have in mind are much better served in autumn and winter. So I will certainly be sharing how I get on.

      Hi Alan, yes, many thanks for your very generous long-term support. I'm afraid that it's unlikely I will return to adding content as frequently as every week even with the new format. I just felt that the pressure to get something out was significantly undermining the quality of my photography and with that in mind I felt that it would be better to release videos when I have something of a quality of which I am 100% happy to share. I have been conscious of sharing substandard images in the past simply to meet a self imposed deadline. Many thanks for sticking with me. 😊👍

      Hello Mark, many thanks for being good enough to watch and comment. I really appreciate it. And I must say that I totally respect your approach to landscape photography. It's quite possible that my own affinity for complex processing stems from an inability to generate the impact I am after from more "realistic" interpretations. As I mentioned in a similar reply to another comment on this video I marvel at the ability of some photographers to generate intense wow factor from images that appear to all intents and purposes as if I was stood alongside them when they fired the shutter release. So hats off to photographers like yourself, able to do that. 😊👍

    @tomrandall6539 Před 2 lety +1

    Very interesting to see you jump into DxO; I too have been using it, but I only tend to use it for shots where I push the ISO up; I just can't get away from some of the colour control in Lightroom, so I tend to use a combination of both, Lightroom for cataloging and colour control, and DxO for bringing out real detail and noise control. But the combination of all 3 packages, Lightroom, DxO and Photoshop just cannot be beaten can it. At least for Olympus (or rather OMD I should say now!) files.
    Good luck with your project and distinction attempt, I'll try to follow you through it and I absolutely love the statement of intent and subject matter you've chosen for it!

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 2 lety +1

      @@michaelmclean4791 Hi Michael, the answer to that is pretty much yes and no. Yes I have completely abandoned using Lightroom itself. I never used the cataloguing facilities at all in any case. However, I am still using the Lr processing engine through the camera raw filter on Ps smart object layers where it offers tools which I need for a given edit. But the performance of PL5 in converting raw files to digital negatives works particularly well on M4/3 files. Additionally, some of the standard editing tools such as denoising, lens corrections and exposure adjustment particularly using their control points system gives me much finer control over adjustments. The transition required the usual learning curve time investment, but I have felt it is well worth it and I am much preferring the accuracy of adjustments and the overall interface. It still allows easy exporting into Ps where I use a lot of layers as demonstrated in this video. As I go along and work on images which require specific processes, I'll be talking about these in more detail for both PL5 and Ps layered filters. Although, I don't think I'll be doing anything along the lines of a full blown tutorial 😊👍

Your pursuit of the photographic distinction sets a coherent direction to your photography, but there’s always the danger that working within the constraints of your statement of intent could stifle your creativity. I lost my way how you post proces Dave, sorry. But... your idee of shooting "nature strikes bake", seems a very good idee to me. The photo's you'v shown are great. I always look at the way how houses and buildings where made back in the days. And the "left overs" from houses build with nature stones are very attractive for stills. Thnx for the vlog.

I'll be going into more detail about individual processes in future videos depending on how each image needs work so hopefully that will be more helpful to you. I've just come across your channel. I'm an Olympus shooter as well. Thanks for reminding me of my goal of getting an RPS distinction. I completely forgot about that years ago.
    FWIW I prefer to use as little software as possible. If I really need a good JPEG export I'll use DxO. Otherwise it's all in-camera. Anything more is arbitrary fiddling. But my influence is much more Image Bank than Ansel Adams.
    Thankfully digital cameras like Olympus are making it easier than ever to forgo manual processing. To me, that is progress.

      Hello Karim, thanks so much for watching and be good enough to take the time to get in touch. I have huge respect for those photographers who can achieve impactful and engaging images based on a realistic interpretation of the scene. I suspect my fetish for postprocessing is probably a compensatory mechanism for my lack of skills in this respect! Although, I can't get away from the fact that I really enjoy the editing process, trying out processing techniques to see how they affect an image and, indeed, creating multiple variations of single images. Horses for courses I suppose. 😊👍

    As I commented just after your last somewhat briefer hiatus, how many technical videos do we need? Making too many "What's in my bag?" videos is a mark of 'content desperation' on the part of the vloggers, and I have been wondering for some time when people will get tired of them and move on. I have. I applaud your honesty, and wholeheartedly agree with your view regarding how you spend your valuable time.
    For myself, I thought the derelict cottage a poor subject. The sky didn't help and the road was too intrusive. As you said, "It won't make the cut". The wave/rock image was interesting and the image were the rock breeched the horizon was saved (in my own opinion) by the wave encapsulating the rock. In the last image the sky/horizon was very distracting for me, and the broad band across the top of the image immediately drew my eye to it.
    A very refreshing outlook, and I hope you only make videos that you enjoy making, rather than the, "Oh God, I have to scrape up something for next weeks vlog," variety, which must make photography a real PITA.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 2 lety

      Many thanks Andrew, for your very constructive feedback. You are quite right about the cottage, and I knew from the outset it wasn't really suitable. With regards to the horizons in the seascapes unfortunately my options for positioning myself were limited and so the compromises were unavoidable, but I agree with you on all counts 😊👍

    Here in the Smoky Miountains of Tennessee & North Carolina USA there are many good examples of nature taking back. The national park service took over a large amount of geography to create the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Homes and even towns are being taken over by nature. Also, when TVA created dams, they flooded large areas containing towns (see Noris Lake). After listening to your project, I am inspired to capture some of this.

    Glad to see you again Dave. I'm quite interested in your project and I look forward to seeing it progress. As for your direction of showcasing the photos in lieu of b-roll, I follow a wildlife photographer who does that. He does a lot of safari workshops from moving vehicles so b-roll doesn't work very well. He picks five or so images, shows the photo and then discusses what he was thinking, what he liked and what he didn't and a bit about how he processed the photos. If that is what you are describing, I think that approach works really well. I'm less enamored with the "walking through the scene" b-roll anyway. I am always more interested in the photo and what the photographer saw and intended. That is how I learn and the b-roll doesn't really add much if that is the goal. I guess it is good as far as entertainment but I'm much more interested in what I can learn. Anyway, glad to see you back and the intent statement was quite well done I thought.

      Hi Philip, yes that's exactly what I'm talking about. Much less B roll other than just a few short clips to set the scene or illustrate the location while I'm talking about the images so it's not all my ugly mug talking to the camera! 😊👍

    Congratulations on the 9k subscibers, it hadn’t happened when I started watching this last night! For me, the vloggers I most enjoy watching are those doing what they enjoy and sharing their enjoyment. Too many of the vloggers I previously watched seem to have ended up having much the same format - lots of b-roll of them walking about not teling you where they are and a couple of photos. My subscription list is getting a lot shorter than it was!
    It was good to hear a bit more about your RPS project, I’m looking forward to following your progress. The other takeaway this episode is to go back and play with my old NIK and Vivaza versions and see how I get on (I use an old OnOne version for enhancements at the moment). Cheers!

      Cheers mate, I must admit I've been quite surprised at how good the DXO processing engine and filters are. They've certainly given many many more options when working with M4/3 raw files, as I always found that Adobe systems really struggled with introducing noise when I was being ambitious with shadow adjustments and sharpening. 😊👍
