  • We conclude the long-term video series with the 2023 Toyota GR86. We discuss the pros and cons of the modifications, problems, and why the car is worth the money. There are more fun cars available in 2023 like, Elantra N, FL5 Type R, ND2 Miata, GR Corolla, Nissan Z, and Toyota Supra, but the GR86 has a few massive advantages.

    I have a weird relationship with my GR86. I continually think about trading it in for something more powerful and comfortable (Supra, M2, SS, etc.). Then I go test drive these cars, come back to my car, and feel like I'm in something that's a breath of fresh air compared to those bloated automobiles. There is no replacement for simplicity and lightness.

    • @melrickibanez670
      @melrickibanez670 Před rokem +19

      I actually own an M2 right now and I'm considering trading it in for a GR or BRZ! I owned a first gen twin and I feel that the twins may offer more fun than the M2. Power is great, but engagement and fun seem like the better fit for me.

    • @milesfathi
      @milesfathi Před rokem +4

      @Melrick Ibanez I do wonder what a happy medium between the M2 and the twins would be. I kind of want to try a base cayman next, as it has some of the lightweight characteristics with more power and better interior. Though it's really hard to justify that price for a 4 cylinder. I've also thought about the new Z. More powerful, kind of old school feeling, but of course with substantially more weight.

    • @Enthusiastlist
      @Enthusiastlist Před rokem +9

      @@milesfathi as someone that has driven both a Supra & a Z I’d just go straight for the Supra especially if you don’t plan to throw a ton of money at the car. The Supra stock suspension is infinitely better than the Z’s & what hasn’t been said about the B58, it sounds good, it’s very reliable & super strong. Couple that with the bizarre issues the VR30s have had & the bloated weight of the Z, it’s an easy choice to me especially if you’re coming from a lightweight car like a Miata or BRZ/86.
      Another issue I have with the Z that wasn’t really mentioned by Jack or Mark in their review is the interior quality is downright comically bad. I feel bad for folks paying at or near $50k+ for switches & buttons that feel like they’re out of a 2003 Chevy Tahoe.

      I thought the same about my S2000. I never sold because I realized I'd miss it. Test drove Caymans, various generations of M3s . All more powerful cars but all heavier and less responsive and ultimately less exciting. I think it comes down to if somebody needs to daily their sports car and how much comfort they want/need

    • @johntechwriter
      @johntechwriter Před rokem +9

      If you are into simplicity and lightness, try a real sports car like an MX-5, which is a foot shorter and 500 lb. lighter than the GR86. Plus, an oil cooler is a stock component of the MX-5’s bulletproof engine.
      The Geese are obviously disturbed by the number of GR86 engines grenading due to a design flaw the manufacturer will not admit to. For me that would be a deal breaker, and as word gets around it’s going to hurt their resale value.

      @@isaaccrews7521 Nothing major to report. I change engine oil every 3-4 track days regardless of age and gearbox/diff oil annually. Before doing track days I fitted a thermostatic oil cooler, oil pan baffle and ran 0 or 5W-30 engine oil.
      As all my local tracks run clockwise the outside front wheel bearing took a beating and needed replacing. All other wheel bearings are still OK.
      Driving in heavy traffic daily and doing track days wore the clutch and throwout bearing out, so these both got replaced about 2.5 years ago.
      Otherwise I just did coilovers, wheels/tires and an AP racing brake kit on the front.

    • @midnighteightsix6919
      @midnighteightsix6919 Před rokem +11

      @@vapor4den See my reply to Issac but in summary I've had no major issues. I think the key with FA20 reliability is to keep the engine oil from getting too hot and thinning out. If it's still NA / not boosted, an oil cooler and a thicker grade oil should prevent any major issues, at least it did for me. An oil pan baffle is also a good idea and extra insurance.
      Gearbox itself is fine, no issues with the synchros and shifting. Clutch/throwout bearing gave up a few years ago but that was it.

    I picked up the exact same GR86 in February of '22 after owning a '13 BRZ in my mid-20's. Now that I'm creeping towards 40 with a toddler in tow, I've found that as much joy as I get driving it, it's a vastly different experience and I'm trading it in 2 days from now for a G70. It's kind of sad, I feel as if I'm betraying that younger version of myself with his "Non-automatica" #savethemanuals t-shirt and DNGRZNE license plates. Though I can't say I'll miss the noise on the highway and feeling every single bump travel up my spine as I cruise along Canada's cratered highways. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to own both generations of this car and appreciate how there's still a few automotive execs out there who push these increasingly rare kinds of cars out to the market.

      While I would never suggest someone to buy a BRZ as their only family vehicle, there's absolutely no reason to get rid of it because of the kid!

    Well I've had my base model GR 86 for about one month now, manual is very good. My previous car, Mini Cooper S, coupe was getting a little ruff on the suspension after 9 years, 2014. In comparison the Toyota is a luxury ride and quite a bit faster, still breaking in engine, with the factory options of exhaust and subwoofer, it's a winner for my daily driver in south Chicagoland. Thanks for your videos and great content. Keep up the great videos and look for the same color, base model as I pass you up on my limited adventures.

    I have tux mats on one of my cars. They were a bit expensive, but well worth the price in my opinion. Easy to clean, better coverage and they look super fancy which is nice. I get compliments about them. I opened mine exactly the same way Mark did except there were moaning sounds. Only thing I don’t like about them is the drive side mat tends to shift forward into the foot well, even with a bunch of clips install. Some kind of Velcro system might work better:
    A Velcro patch that pins into the factory carpet and the corresponding Velcro pads are either pre-installed on the mats or you manually place them in.

    Cars, especially brand-new sports cars are now inappropriately expensive for the average working person, for the most part. Thank you for covering that. I only get excited about the lower-priced end of cars now, because they're real, everyday people can have them, and they usually won't financially ruin your life.
    I bought my 2019 Miata, base Sport, at invoice for $26,000 over four years and 40,000 miles ago. Car is unmodified, just replaced tires for the second time, and only major maintenance has been transmission oil change so far. The cost per mile, the smiles per dollar of this car have been phenomenal. I do not hesitate to recommend these machines to people. It's the blue collar hero. The latest GR86 is a great car, but I like convertibles, and I don't like the driving experience of naturally aspirated boxer-four engines.
    You don't have to spend $40,000 to have fun in a sports car, even a new sports car. You don't have to spend $3,000 a year on consumables, or take on a massive insurance bill. You don't have to spend $5,000 or $10,000 on performance modifications. There are very few pure cheap RWD cars left on the new car market. Consider supporting them with cold, hard purchases, voting with those dollars.

The silicon issue I'm aware of and plan on dropping the pan at some point to pull any I find out of the bottom. I plan on keeping it stock for a while maybe until I'm ready to turn it into my non-daily toy. I owned an ND Mazda Miata PRHT and the difference in handling between it and the GR86 is very obvious. The Miata being bouncy and with lots of body roll stock and the GR86 being ready to track out of the box. Maybe one day I'll do a V8 swap.
