  • Should you buy a 2023 Toyota GR86? I believe in 2023 the GR86 will fall short of its promise of a fun sports car simply because a new rival within Toyota's car line is heavily over shadowing it.
    We start with some of the mechanical improvements to the engine. Some good things, some things that are not good and some things that don't make sense.

    The 86 platform is special because it's one of the very few LIGHTWEIGHT, RWD, low-sitting, naturally aspirated sports car that exists right now.

      Problem is a miata is cheaper, not much less power, and has a drop top. Maybe slightly less practical but I feel like it's a no Brainer to just get a miata instead

    Nice video. There are really good reasons to buy the GR86 over the GR Corrola. 1) you can actually find a GR86. 2) The GR 86 isn't grossly marked up like the GR Corrola. People aren't going to pay 60-70k for a Corrola.

    There is a purity to 86/BRZ in its simplicity. I own a 22 BRZ and 1000% happy. It gives all the right feels. After 2 turbocharged cars I appreciate linearity of power and there is enough to have fun on the street.

      Personally I would have loved if Toyota gave the buyer the option to get the 3 banger that's in the Yaris/Rolla GR.

    Overall a very fair review with lots of good points. What I disagree with is the core message that the GR Corolla outclasses the GR86. The GR86 is lightweight, low COG, RWD and NA. The GR Corolla is none of that. So the GR Corolla can't outclass the GR86 because they are in 2 completely different classes, and therefore have different target audiences. And even if the GR Corolla was a direct competitor, there are still plenty of people like myself who would go for the GR86 simply for looks. Yes the GR Corolla has 4 doors and more space, but it can't hold a candle to the sporty look of a sleek 2-door coupe.

      As one who was initially dead-set on a GR Corolla (well, originally a GR Yaris, and I was pissed to find out they weren't gonna sell it stateside)
      I'm actually far more in favor of the GR86, even with it's right-turn oil starvation problem, because of the weight, & chassis, and the fact that I'll simply also buy a 2GR & build that, and keep it on standby as a swap for when the warranty runs out

      As an older enthusiast who has owned pretty much every class of sporty car, from hot hatches to American muscle, I couldn't have said it better. The most fun cars I've owned have all been less than 3,000 pounds, rwd, naturally aspirated manuals, most of which didn't make enough power to get out of their own way - like an '87 924S and NA Miata. I'd take an 86/BRZ over a GR Corolla every day of the week.
      I once traded a rwd 228i for an M240i xDrive. The test drive sold me on the power. A few months later, I regretted it. Turns out the 228i is _far_ more fun to drive.

    I'm the owner of a 2023 GR86 for almost 4 months now, I drive it everyday and I'm still amazed by how well it handles. Regarding power, it's more than enough to enjoy it, while being considerably fuel efficient (I'm getting about 27 mpg on average). the Corolla GR must be an incredible upgrade, but it's more than $15k more expensive and mechanically, much more complex, therefore, possibly costlier to maintain and repair. So the GR86 is the cheapest option, only comparable to the Miata, which is smaller but not cheaper.

      I own the 2022 model, picked up an auto for msrp. they wanted much more for a manual. but the auto is great, I get 32.5 mpg, and I live where there are tons of twist and turn roads so the drive to work is awesome.

    Problem with the GR Corolla is that it’s reached unobtainable status by it’s limited production and dealer markups making the GR86 the only car in Toyotas lineup that’s sporty and affordable

      Toyota stealerships are trying VERY hard to make even the GR86 unobtainable as well. My local dealer are blantantly marking the used cars as $42K. A NEW one is $32k. lol. Just INSANE. They then try saying they mark them down, and you 'save' thousands, whilst still charging around $1k more than new. lol.

      I would not buy a turbo 3 cylinder, especially a rally homologation, first iteration. It doesn't matter if it blows up after 1 season of rally.. but 50k miles on that engine? Hmm, maybe the 2nd version or after a few years. When you can see the cars endurance and some vehicles start passing the 100k mile mark, then some conclusions can be drawn.

    Though I wish Toyota had designed and built this entirely in house, I will give them credit for making what is easily the best looking inexpensive car that still has some fun to it. The designs of most $28,000 cars basically look like the maker is telling the buyer, " sorry dude, you're gonna have to wait 15 years and add a decimal point to your salary before dreaming of affording anything that looks remotely cool."

    The 86/BRZ is a purpose made, RWD, 2 door - a proper sports car. The GR Corolla is a regular passenger car that has been modified, and remains wrong wheel drive.

    I guess the thing that I like about this car over the GR Corolla is that it's more 'romantic'? It's a simpler, more straightforward car. it feels like the GR Corolla's 'specialness' is diminished by it sharing so much with the regular Corolla, while one of the things that makes the GR yaris and the GR86 (technically) feel 'pure' is that they're unique bodies built to do the one thing that they do
    besides, wouldn't a turbocharged GR86 cut into the 2.0 supra's niche?

      The biggest besides HP is that the GR86 is clean lines 2 door coupe. The GRC is just 4 doors ugly as hell.

      I purchased the 2015 FRS right off the showroom floor. Best car I ever owned. It’s the only car that I’ve never traded in after 4 years. But now I really want the new model.

    Before even the new GR86/BRZ were announced, I wanted a GR yaris more than any other car, but unfortunately it was never coming to the US. So when they announced the GR Corolla, I was superrrr hyped for it and pretty much dead set on it being my next car. Coming from a 135i, I wanted a vehicle that could still slide around a bit, but have the traction of AWD when necessary. The second I found out the corolla wasnt as “tail happy” as the focus rs or MK8 R, I went and test drove a 2022 BRZ, just me, no salesman. Man, 30 minutes in, I drove back in a hurry and bought that damn car. It’s every bit as fun as everyone says it is, and I haven’t regretted walking away from the GR Corolla one bit. I may just like it more than the 135i, but to me, nothing will ever top an inline 6 sound/smoothness.

      Im sry but if a 135 (even the M135) is a sporty car for you, you really need a education.
      And therefore your comments are invalid on 86/BRZ.
      I love the idea of rear wheel drive, the ability to Power steer and throw the car into corners. But the 135 does none of that, if try and drive hard the traction control is on every corner and the rear still steps out wildly. it is not a progressive power slide/ Steer. It is just not a well balanced car. It is not enjoyable to drive hard or at all confidence inspiring. is one of the worst rear ends ever.
      I drove a M2 and my commodore sedan ( With great tyres) both much heavier and both with consideration for their market position are progressive power sliders and are not hitting the tra tion control every corner.

      Totally agree, the BMWs engine is sublime, but, like all BMW manuals, they are garbage. The GR86 is truly the modern day JDM cheap fun car, and is almost a poor man's Cayman. The M135i/M140i of the old RWD platform are just not fun to drive the way the 86 is, but they are great cars in their own way.

      Why? It makes no sense to me. 3rd’s synchros should be carbon, not 2 or 4. On track you use 2 and 3. You use synchros when up shifting. You should be double clutch rev matching down. 2nd synchros go out drag racing. Why are you drag racing in an 86? 😂

      @@JaySee5 Well nobody generally is drag racing them unless they're heavily modded, but the 1st gen in particular you'd be revving the nuts off it at all times because it was low on power, and 2nd gear always felt weird, that's all. You sound more knowledgeable on it than me though so I would defer to you.

    I have a 2022 BRZ. It feels wonderful to drive. GR Corolla is unobtainable and not intended to overshadow the twins. Hot hatch vs pure, raw sports car. I also recommend watching Phelp's Garage if you want to see what one of these things could do. This dude is underselling the hell out of this car.

    I had the previous gen and I loved it for the handling, I know it wasn't fast, but I went from a Corolla to the FRS so yes, it was a bit faster and after driving FWD for decades, I began to appreciate the rear drive.

    The fuel door shape is a nod to the 2000 GT headlight shape. If you look closely the GR86 takes a lot of styling queues from the 2000 GT.

    Great video!! This is my dream car. Screw the FWD based GR Corolla. Don't care about how fast it can go, how it can drift with the gizmos etc... a proper RWD pure N/A engine can't be beat.

      It can. I have an accord 2.0 sport, with very light suspension mods (mostly swaybars, strut bars) factory wheels, factory shocks and brakes. With a stage 2 tune and NO engine mods, I walked an m340i and am capable of literally bringing the rear around at a similar pace and hang with it on a track. So this is ridiculous assumption that RWD is in any way superior. Poor guy was mad that a mom car beat him in a straight and on track...WITH STOCK PARTS and nothing but good ground up engineering.

      ​@@singular9 nobody cares how fast you can go unless track is your primary use for a car, and in that case, you can build a track car. The 340i with equivalent mods would be even faster. Anyway, it's all about engagement and driving fun, and no turbo Accord is getting close to a Miata or GR86 on that front. Who cares how fast you can go in a straight line.

      @@singular9 additionally, the GR86, on stock settings, has the potential to break most tracks' class time records, someone nearly did, look it up on youtube.
      Someone also posted an unofficial time of 8:27 in the Nurburgring. So the notion of the GR86 being slow is false.
      The BMW you "raced" probably didn't even know you were "racing"

    the blue tape around the heat shield at 11:38 is there because there is a jagged edge around the heat shield that the tape is meant to protect you from. At least that's a user in the forums said when he asked about it at toyota.

    Thank you for your in depth review. I have been thinking about purchasing this vehicle since 2022 however still holding off. I know Sub/Toyota can add some more horse power to the 2.4.
    I did not realize the standard transmission needed to beef up second gear. AND, you were/are the only reviewer that has mentioned this in-depth. Greatly appreciate this detailed overview. Thanks again!

      If you watch some exhaust reviews for this car you will see why second gear goes. Every weekend racer power shifts the crap out of these poor cars doing the 1-2. Sounds cool, chirps the tires, eats the synchro. Mechanics, by virtue of the job, see the worst of the worst. (Speaking as a mechanic) Shift it like a street car that you actually care about and it won't wear any quicker than any other low HP stick shift.

    There is absolutely no comparison between the two - you cannot slide the Corolla. The GR86 fills an enthusiast's niche, and I'm so thankful we have it.

    I recently went to look at the GR86 from someone who changed his GR Yaris for the GR86. He had no regrets whatsoever. As a matter of fact I know nobody who says: The GR86 sucks compared to a GR Corolla. I don't agree at all that this car will die out due to the existence of a GR Corolla or GR Yaris. It is absolutely different than those other (also amazing) cars.

      100% agree. I own a GR Yaris and after test driving a GR86 I bought one and will probably sell the Yaris. The GR86 is way more fun.

      The guy from the video also disregards the difference between the rear wheel drive of the 86 and the all wheel drive of the corolla, the cars are clearly different and I dont see why someone would like to change this one for the corolla if they want a rwd car.

      Sorry I drove both and the GR Yaris is in my garage. Each to their own but the Yaris is just as fun with more power. The torque is just amazing. Very fun car to drive.

    Heavy econo car chassis that doesn't like to rotate with heavy front weight bias and understeer vs bespoke & stiff RWD chassis, on demand oversteer, lightweight & responsive NA. GR86 by a mile for drivers. You need to hit a back road or the track and look up the word, "special." One is a mini minivan and the other one is a pure sports car.       @jun kazama it's not a coupe and not close to it. GR86 is about 3x stiffer. RF adds only weight. No added rigidity. Same problem with the S2000. Lacks rigidity and only understeer sucks worse than cowl shake... Why enthusiasts begged for an MX5 coupe. We never got one. Sucks. Would be a much more serious sports car with solid rigidity. As is it's lacking.

Joking aside, MX5s are bad ass but I do prefer the new twins. And if you want to get really serious? MX5 isn't stiff enough to go ballistic. 10K Nm/degree isn't going to cut it. 30K Nm/degree will. FI? Have at it

    I owned and tracked many cars and once you go RWD, you'll never go back. The GRC AWD system is sophisticated and performant but incredibly boring compared to this. RWD, 6MT, NA, light weight. A classic recipe that doesn't exist anywhere else.

    You do the best car review videos anywhere! Love your honesty with your opinions on all cars you review. Having a true mechanic’s point of view is priceless. I am, however, very surprised you didn’t mention the RTV problem and how it’s causing blown engines due to oil starvation when the RTV gets stuck in the oil pickup tube? Has that been fixed in the 2023 models? Would like to hear your thoughts on this problem if you could look into it please. Keep up the great work…

      Blown out of proportion. This is a non- issue on the GR86. The pickup screen was modified and now shaped like a box with more surface area!

    im a huge fan of CCN videos and they’re the most informative and insightful car videos on youtube without a doubt. Could you make a video on how to make these 2nd gen 86/BRZ cars reliable/run for a long time? I know you have plenty of videos on how to make a toyota last 300k+ mi, but this is mechanically mostly a subaru and i’ve found that there’s not a lot of videos out there on how to keep good maintenance on these or how to make them last. I know it’s still a fairly new car but it’s very similar to the 1st gen and those have been out for awhile now. Mine is at ~2k mi now and wanted to be informed and knowledgeable on how to take care of these amazing cars.

    The GR Corolla is marked up everywhere and not everyone wants a 4 door awd for their sports car. The only possible issue might be the trans if they are still too notchy but I have yet to drive one. I also prefer the 86 interior over the corolla. Miata is another option but they feel too cramped for me and I prefer a car with more precise handling like the 86 over the Miata with extra body roll. Not a big fan of drop tops either.

    The video seems to start with a lot of errors. First, this second gen has much more oil starvation problems than the first generation; so whatever was done to the engine did not "solve the issue", it made it much worse.
    Then, the engine is called fa20 on gen 1, fa24 on gen2, not ta20/ta25.

    IMO - This doesn't compare to the GR Corolla. The Corolla to get is the Circuit edition, which is $42,900. That's over 10k more than the 86, and that's before every dealer markup on the Corolla. Also, the 86 comes in an automatic. It might not be a "true" GR model, but for a fun to drive RWD car that still comes in an automatic (wife won't drive a manual), there aren't many other options out there. I'm glad they still make this.

    Honest review of what the GR86 is and is not. I was into weekend track racing in my twenties with a V6 Capri; fun. The Toyota premium with an automatic is the perfect car for me five decades later; I'm not dead yet. What a great road car, that handles and stops well. I also own a Forester Wilderness, which shares Subaru instruments and engine, as well as, the safety features of the GR86. In a Maine winter the Forester is great, much better than the offroad Jeep 4x4s I used for years. I love going back and forth between the shared family of vehicles. Cars and trucks are not unlike golf clubs; can't play well with only one. Were I into driving stupid, I'd own one car, say the Corolla GR, and have all my money in one car. I'm not perfect, and don't expect my GR86 to be perfect. But, sweet Jesus, thank you the best motorized wheelchair available for the money. Planning to switch from the noisy track tires it came with, to a/s Conti DWS so I can enjoy my oldies. Also, my dog loves riding in the back seat; easy in and out.

    You're missing the point of this car by comparing it with the gr corolla. Rwd Vs fwd, sports car vs hot hatch, different balance n driving feel altogether. It depends on what kinda driving feel you want. If u can have only one car then gr corolla makes sense. Some reviewers have driven this and the brz side by side n said there are significant differences in the way they drive. Maybe you can do that. Anyways, still love your detailed reviews n explanation.

    I'm not sure I'd get too worked up by the the idea of a 'true GR' car. 2/3 of "GR cars" in the US market are built by someone else and there is not a long and storied pedigree of "true GR" cars. Still that team has differentiated their cars in ways from the BRZ (which I own) and the Z4, and even influenced the original cars themselves such as D4S being used by the Subaru and design changes made to the BMW B48 engine. I think they've done something very practical here, and the BRZ/GR86 offer a purity and simplicity that is hard to buy anymore. I love how basic these cars are. Also, on the 6-speed transmission - an in house Toyota design.

    I own this exact car and I love it. Hands down the best car I’ve ever owned. So fun to drive, so engaging, none of the issues pointed out in this video have ever been a problem for me. If I do have problems 5 or 6 years from now, then so be it. It’s worth it.

    I think comparing the 86 to the corolla is pointless, since they're completely different cars. A lightweight NA RWD car vs an AWD turbo hot hatch... Not the greatest comparison there

    each GR vehicle tackles it's own place in the market.
    Realistically speaking, although not the most popular option, you can get a base GR Supra if you still want RWD and more power.
    Adding more power would just cannabilize sales of that car which you cant even find in a manual.
    GR Corolla, is to compete with the hot hatch market.
    The 86 has one competitor, which doesn't exactly count because it's much smaller, which is the miata.
    Personally, I don't think it'll become overshadowed because the aftermarket support of the 86 is a lot more common than the Corolla.
    There is no specialty or uniqueness of owning a Corolla, regardless of GR, because it looks like every other hot hatch.

    The GR86 is a lot more approachable and an actual RWD, unlike the GR Corolla/Yaris/Mazda2 that's still FWD-based.
    Also the GR86 has beaten, or close to beating, some tracks' class record on stock settings. Also posted a respectable but unofficial 8:27 lap in the Nurburgring.

      Yeah, the car has flaws but the whole notion that "this is not a powerful car" is misguided. The specs might not look amazing, but the driving experience is fantastic. I test drove this among other cars but this one won me over. This car also does very well in the GT300 (300 hp and under) in Japan, where It competes against modified Supras, GTRs and whatnot. So the bang for the buck is out of this world. It feels like comparing it to the Corolla GR or Civic Type R its unfair, since pretty much the driving 'feel' is different (FWD vs RWD). I would compare to the Mazda miata, but clearly there are not many comparable cars if at all at this price point.

    A buddy of mine had a '22 BRZ Limited. He added coilovers, header-back exhaust, Brembo front calipers among other things. He let me put a few miles on it in the twisties and oh man, that car was SO much fun! I had a '13 BRZ Limited, and it was better than mine in every way.

    I think you make a lot of great points about the car. It sucks how the car seems half good and half meh, and I hope they do what you were saying at the end about an actual GR version. But the market is so bleh right now it's really the only new car I want to consider. I don't even consider the corolla, reminds me too much of a Golf or Focus, no offense... the 86 just looks so sharp, and it fits in the pocket of decent power, 2 seat, rwd, good handling car

    I skipped to "what I don't like" and found his opinion elitest and impractical. I have a BRZ and for the price (I bought mine at MRSP) it has enough power and is a lot of fun. The insurance isn't outrageous as the GR Corolla and a Supra would be and people think it's an expensive sports car, even being mistaken most often for a Supra. The Corolla is, well, still a Corolla. The low CG and 53%/47% makes it a fun daily driver and a turbo would upset the fine balance. There's still enough room in the trunk to make it usable and there is a plethora of aftermarket parts to overcome most of the design and performance shortcomings. After a full year, I'm still happy with the car. I'll save the $10k higher price that most of the Corollas are going for in my area. I'm also concerned about the longevity of squeezing 300 hp out of 1600 ccs!

    I would love to test drive one of these cars. Right now I have a 07 IS250 6MT and have been slowly upgrading every suspension bushing to polyurethane and would love to swap the FRS limited slip differential into the car to get something that handles close to a FRS but with the build quality of a Lexus while having four doors.

    22 brz here. I agree with everything in this video..except one thing..
    The major complaints such as power and component's are a selling point for enthusiasts, think about it. It is really "the" tuner car of this decade. Its meant to be modified, worked on, tuned.. i get while out of the box its good, its not great.. but for who i believe the car is truly marketed for, the modders/tuners and the aftermarket businesses... this car is an absolute dream.
    This car has the look, the price, the bones and hits a lot of areas that make it one of the absolute best project cars out there for gear heads and tuners to go wild. This car creates jobs and hobbies.. like many cars before it.. but who is building cars like this today, at this price point? Sure you can get a supra, a z... or you can get one of these and have thousands left over to truly build "your car".. and because its so affordable.. without guilt or worry.
    So while i agree with everything, i have to argue those points. Most of those who end up owning these cars want to build and personalize it.. and you really cant get any better than this.

    I disagree, gr Corolla is not fun compared to the gr 86/brz. Is not just about the cost but also the driving dynamics. I rather drive 86 than a gr corolla for any type of driving. Rwd and N/A still better than gimmicks from the GR Corolla which is dull and doesn’t teach you how to drive the car. I am wondering who is really going to rally daily with a gr Corolla. Who is also going to pay for Toyota’s mark ups and ridiculous add ons. Majority of the Toyota dealerships are robbers and too many mal practices. For a car that's under 30k versus GR corolla around 45k depending which dealership you are working with, this car is a gem for most car enthusiasts for spirit driving. Heck even I do not care for GR supra or even my previous favorite S2000. GR86/BRZ is the most practical Porsche 944 recipe that we don't get much these days so please BRZ/GR86 owners should treasure their cars, you won't regret it. Finally, you actually pay less with Subaru premium since you don’t really need limited edition so the Subaru route is actually cheaper since they do respect keeping msrp compared to Toyota marking up their gr86 both trims.

      I agree, as an owner myself I believe that the 86 is a car that teaches me to drive. It is a good blank canvas as a tuner car where anyone can do what they want with it. The GR Corolla is more of a rally car and the Supra I would only purely get for speed if I were to keep it stock

    The GR86 would literally be perfect if it had a Toyota straight 4 instead of the boxer. The center of gravity will raise, sure, but it would be 100% worth it for the reliability and simplicity. It would be the modern AE86 or 240sx.

    On the BRZ; the knuckle is aluminum, rear sway bar is mounted to the body, instead of subframe, sway bar thickness is different, and the spring rates are different.
    You can get the Eyesight system in the manual trim with auto cruise control in the 2024 models. Personally I don't like all the nannies and they just add cost, complexity, and weight.

Is it still worth discussing, especially in terms of a certified tech doing a mechanical breakdown of the GR86? Absolutely. If it really is a nonissue, he should address it directly and put it to bed. I'm very surprised that he didn't even mention it, after mentioning the oil baffles, the thinner cylinder walls, and all the other mechanical subjects he covered. Doing a BRZ-GR86 mechanical review without mentioning RVT is a very conspicuous oversight.

It was present with the previous generation as well, and they re designed the oil pickup to have more sides with openings for better oil pick up in the second gen. The only reason it was discussed heavily online is bc Toyota declined the warranty for someone who tracked their car, had a blown engine and found RTV. I have owned my GR86 for a year now, 15,000 miles and no RTV issues. Never seen RTV on my dip stick. When I say it is a non-issue, I mean it is causing a very minimal amount of engine failures in the field and there is no recall for it. Toyota and Subaru are obviously aware of it and the fact that they haven't issued a recall yet shows it was overblown. Plus, if it is an issue and causes massive oil starvation leading to engine failure it should happen well before the warranty is expired.

      Fwiw, I am not aware of a single engine failure that could be directly attributed to RTV-related oil starvation, but if it has happened then it clearly needs to be addressed by Toyota and Subaru. There is simply too much uncertainty surrounding the issue.

    The manual does actually have a safety system, blind spot monitoring, which is prob the most important one you can have. Starting msrp for a gr corolla is around 36k, for the 86 its around 29k..lol, and the markups for the corolla are more aggressive. Personally I think the 86 looks a lot better too, corolla looks like a box on wheels in comparison. The power in the 86 for its price range is fine, but if you have 7k-10k extra to spend, you need more power and don't care about looks then sure...get yourself a gr corolla.
