    Now that's badass

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius Před 4 lety +31

      I would think many of those weapons would best the sword though, especially under the right circumstances. If you were as equally skilled with the spear as your opponent was with a sword, it would be very difficult for them to have an opening to strike. A pollaxe also has the reach advantage, like the spear, while also being difficult to guard against due to its heft. In close quarters, i.e. inside a hallway/building/ enclosed area, a dagger beats the sword.

    • @benjaminplatt4109
      @benjaminplatt4109 Před 4 lety +6

      @@AveSicarius While a spear does have a reach advantage. The sword would be about closing the gap, read by the swordsman, and played and practiced against squires extensively and repitiously. During a close up meatfest that reach becomes too cumbersome and makes it nullified as its unwieldy. While a sword can still thrust. If only we had camcorders back then to see it played out.

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius Před 4 lety +8

      @@benjaminplatt4109 well yes, it would be about the skill of the individual wielder and the battlefield conditions.
      Though I think you would rarely see a sword vs spear scenario on a battlefield just because of the scarcity of the former.
      In a dueling scenario however, even if the spear wielder was slightly less skilled; I would give him the advantage. It would be very hard to get close to an individual wielding a spear with a sword, thrusts are hard to deflect and are linear so not very telegraphed while also being very quick.
      It's a similar situation to a dagger vs a sword in such a scenario, a dagger is a much more effective weapon in close quarters. But getting there is the hard part.
      If I remember correctly there were several historical accounts of spears/quarterstaves doing very well into swords, they were considered peasant weapons however so I don't think you would see many, if any, nobles ever learning such techniques.
      A quarterstaff also is permanently carried at the ready, so can be employed against sheathed weapons in impromptu scenarios.
      I agree, being able to see would be much easier. Looking through various historical records, that may or may not be accurate/honest, is really an effective way of understanding technique.
      Though eastern martial arts see this also, where master-student transmission has led to ineffective techniques over generations of inactivity. It is hard to think of what situations they would originally have been employed in.

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius Před 4 lety +4

      @SlowMotionSword I have extensive practice in several martial arts the basic concepts of which are transferable between all martial arts, i.e. there are only so many ways to fight.
      I made an observation based on my experience of how combat actually works. The combatant with a longer reach holds the advantage as they can strike from a greater distance. Linear strikes such as thrusts are much less telegraphed than swings while also being quicker as your weapon is generally already pointed in the direction of your opponent, and you simply extend.
      Explain to me how any of those concepts are wrong when the are applied in literally all combat arts. Then explain to me how making up my opinion based on personal experience and knowledge is in anyway linked to "CZcams demagogues".
      You are making a sweeping statement based on nothing; in what seems to be a strange attempt to show off your vocabulary.
      If you are going to make a counterargument try to make it relevant to the subject, not simply ad hominem attacks.

      Pointy thing that basically hurts you,
      Anyone can use it, you dont have to have extreme swordlike training to use it.
