As the families gather on Driftmark for a funeral, Viserys calls for an end to infighting and Alicent demands justice.
Vhagar, nicknamed Queen of All Dragons, is the largest dragon in the realm, twice the size of Caraxes. Her scales are a deep jade. Named after a god of Old Valyria, she was ridden by Queen Visenya Targaryen during the conquest of Westeros, and later claimed by Laena Velaryon.
Sunfyre is a young dragon, ridden by Viserys Targaryen's eldest son, Aegon.
Helaena Targaryen owns but rarely rides Dreamfyre.

A minor nerdy take but at the very first scene, I'm just bothered that Vhagar's wing flaps should create VERY POWERFUL wind currents and should obviously create ripples in the sea considering she's flying at that height above the sea surface.

She barely flaps the wings at all, the fact that this big thing should weight a lot more and shouldnt be able to fly like this. Dragons just use magic to fly, thats only explanation

10 years ago, maybe, but nowadays there is literally too much cgi . that's why things like top gun 2 are making such comebacks
@jj unless you are implying these are footage of real dragons then any comment related to the visual of dragons (by extension, basically any fantasy element) is related to cgi. as long as there are people continue to be amazed by superficial visual effect there will be more and more movies with fancy visuals and no substance

In this scene Vhagar didn't look so huge but in the final episode of Baratheon Castle it looked larger than the castle.

Apparently this scene was planned to have Sunfyre and Dreamfyre flying off the cliff first before Vhagar joined but they cut them off and left just Vhagar.... I'm so mad at them from cutting that out!!!

No, she's 300 feet long and her wingspan is 492 feet wide.
@@MasterOfTheElementslook at 0:25, each one of her wing is as long as her entire body from nose to tail, so if she is 300 ft then her wingspan is 600ft+, but she is actually 492 ft (150m) so her wingspan would be about 1000ft+(300m+)

This was filmed where I live!! The castle and the scenes you see here are filmed in the town I live in called Marazion which is located in Cornwall in the United Kingdom!! Absolutely beautiful place to live, I’m so grateful to here!! No wonder they picked it to film on!!

@@chrisrubin6445 You can see Sunfyres face and overall design clearly early in this same episode. Hes sitting on the ground facing all the guests while Syrax flies over him. He looks pretty neat. And it looks like hes the same breed as Syrax. But he has two distinct horns instead of four.

I was also wondering the same. She looked like Godzilla behind the Baratheon Castle. That scene with he huge neck. The girth of the neck only seemed to be few feet larger than Arrax size. Vhagar surely looked too big. They could have kept the size little bit lower.

I just seen in a recent early development that this scene was suppose to be showing Dreamfyre and Sunfyre taking off the cliff. I really wanted to see Helaena on Dreamfyre and Aegon on Sunfyre. Although i am not disappointed in this scene though seeing Vhagar's shear size upclose in broad daylight
I want them to do a series of Aegons Conquest as a spin off (GOT house of the dragons: the conquest)
I want to see balerion the black dread! That could do a time jumps for the first season of that to establish the story too.
I heard a rumor that Henry Cavill may take on the role as Aegon the Conquest with a possible flashback going on in season 2. It mayyyyy be a coincidence, but recently, there's news of Henry Cavill getting replaced as the Witcher.

@Ali Chaudhry Yeah but it has nothing to do with House of the Dragon, it’s likely because of his renewed Superman role or his dissatisfaction with the writers of the series as they don’t respect the books nor games.
As awesome as it sounds, it might need a short portrayal of the old city with 1000x dragons. I don't think such budget is possible for them to do justice to the books.

Dragons in game of thrones are literally magic. Like the seasons they purposely defy rational thought. I don't mean this to be flippant. Dragons the seasons and magic are in someway in intertwined
She has a 350 to 400ft wingspan, that's why. Close to half the length of the titanic.

I still don't have the concept of how big Vhagar is. In this scene, it doesn't appear that massive, but in the last episode of s1, it simply dwarfs the castle.
I'm not sure whether it's the consistency problem or the scene perspective.

I agree about the size inconsistency. Vhagar looks like a regular size dragon here, like Drogon.
It's definitely a scene perspective. Earlier in the episode that this scene is from, when Aemond is claiming her, she looks just as big as she does in episode ten because they used Aemond and other points of reference to demonstrate how ginormous she is. That's just like how they juxtapose Arrax with Vhagar in episode ten to display how huge she is. But, in this scene, her size can't be properly conveyed because we don't have a good point of reference to compare her to, and because of that, she comes off as smaller.
There's a lot of comments about the dragon size inconsistencies, including Syrax in the last episode which didn't seemed to grow in size even after 20 years, apparently the special effect team had been using the same CGI they used in the scene in earlier episode which coincidentally happened in the same spot on Dragonstone, let's hope that it will be taken more seriously in the future season.
@@wayothefro3249 hmmm sorry I'd think otherwise, like in episode 10, Vhagar seems to easily dwarf the barathon's Castle. The wall seems at least 5,6 floors tall, but in the episode where Aemond claims her, Vhagar doesn't appear that big even Aemond is still a kid in that scene.
And also, right after this scene, Vhagar flies over Rhaenrya, it should have been a lot bigger in size if Vhagar can dwarf the wall of the castle. That's why I lost the perception of her actual size.
Well, maybe in that 10 years, Vhagar still grows, but the growth doesn't seem to happen to other dragons, like Caraxes and Syraxs.
Therefore, I'm leaning towards inconsistency. Normally, I can bear it. But in this series, dragon size matters and they in the show keep mentioning it, too, as it plays a significant factor to the upcoming wars. So, I'd really hope they can fix this issue.

While Vhagar does fly past Rhaenyra, that doesn't really work well at conveying her size. For one, the camera is closer to Rhaenyra than it was to Vhagar, so Vhagar will naturally look smaller than she actually is. Then by the time Rhaenyra actually comes into the shot, we're basically looking at a head-on shot of Vhagar's backside while she's flying and descending further into the background. Which isn't a good angle to properly depict the size of anything.
Just like you touched on, it doesn't seem like they altered the sizes that much, if at all, of the older dragons like Caraxes and Syrax. That makes it even more unlikely that they'd change Vhagar's size from scene to scene or even episode to episode. It's especially unlikely that they'd change her size to make her look bigger than Storm's End's walls because they are both CGI assets that would be made to scale with each other from the very start along with the other CGI models, and the scale of the show in general. So no resizing would be necessary. Even for scenes like these, where something from real life is put next to CGI like Vhagar, they use previsualization to plan it out and make sure everything lines up properly.

It's not close enough to make her fly. Vhagar doesnt have Engines, she has wings and the isnt using them close to Rhaenyra, she uses them to launch and glide.

Why isn't water getting affected even though vhagar is flying so low
The water was real, the dragon is CGI, there simply was no way to affect the water with CGI unless they put huge green floaters out to cover the whole bay
@@SY-tb9dj They actually could have done it with CGI also. They did when Aemond first claimed her I think. They also did it for Drogon in GOT during the loot train battle and he flew low over the river. I think it was just overlooked, or perhaps they didn't have time to go back to do it. It happens on productions of this massive scale.

Vhagar should have created huge wind waves when lifting up and they should hav showed her use huge force to lift herself off ground climbing up and flying higher than other dragons, flapping those gaints wings with force. Her flight pattern feels too unconvincing.

We know because Sunfyre is Aegon's dragon and Dreamfyre is Helaena's dragon. They, alongside Vhagar, would be the only ones leaving for King's Landing with the Greens.

is it me or does each dragon resemble different a type of reptilianz? like theres different species of dragons.
They said they designed them with one of three skull shapes: Dinosaur shaped for dragons like Drogon. Horse shaped for dragons like Syrax. And wolf shaped for dragons like caraxes

The CGI on the ship scene is pretty bad, you could almost picture the green screen on the set.
I wonder why King viserys, rhaenyra, and the Velaryon allowed Aemond to take Vhagar so easily once he ride her that night. He claimed her, that's ok but I believed the Velaryon could do something about it. Coulnd't they?
How could they do anything? The dragon couldn't be riden by anyone else if Aemond was prevented from riding it.
And why would viserys stop him, I think his issue was more with the fight.
No they couldnt. Once it has been claimed it is bonded. Remember it's dragons who choose their riders, not the other way. So yeah the Velaryon girl, should have had her try first maybe, but Aemond personality is very much like the personality of Vhagar previous riders, while that of Rhaena is not. Still Rhaena will eventually get the dragon that suits her best; Morning. Not sure if they will show it in the show.

I know dragons look pathetic in HOTD but dragons in season 2 will be much better than season 1 and nearly comparable to GoT cause season 1 was shot during covid, lockdowns and WFH so that's why CGI was quite substandard
