  • St Paul's Church is a local treasure. It was built to replace an old church built pre-1559. The first service took place on September 3rd, 1849, and continued until 1984 when it closed down. It has fabulous stain glass windows designed by Katie O'Brien and donated by the Robinson Family when the church was first built. It has a fantastic pipe organ donated by Seymour Murphy, which is one of only three in Ireland. There is something truly special about this church. It has a belfry spire with a unique conical shape.The architecture was considered so outstanding that Dr Bloomfeild, the late Bishop of London was anxious to have a drawing done of it, in order to introduce it to the wealthiest and most important diocese in the world. The church was lit with brass oil lamps, though it was changed to electricity shortly before its closure. It is sad to see it in its damaged state. It is hoped that it will continue to be a heritage treasure for years to come.
    In the middle of the cemetery in a ruined church, which was built in 1699.
    The cemetery is regularly maintained and is open to the public. Many local heroes are buried in Ballymoney cemetery. Joseph daunt 1826, Lennox Robinson, a poet and a man who worked with theatre for many years and General Arthur O'Connor to name but a few. Many of those buried were involved in the Ambush at Kilmichael.
    unfortunately, signs say danger. Keep out, but you can access the graveyard.

    I was late checking in so I am watching the replay. I really enjoy both of your videos. I try not to miss any of them. Being in the states the people of Ireland and England seem lost family to me, because of my early family ties. When I retired 20 years ago my plans where to come over there and do some family research. Unfortunately, we are not in control of our destiny. I was in a major relapse of my MS in 6 months of retirement and did not improve and my doctor restricted my travel to only short visits. Now at 72 years of age I have became so interested in these areas, studying them daily and learning all I can. Being a Historian majoring in History and Political Science started my interests further. Keep up your good work. Both of you are so thoughtful in your presentations. 😊

    First, I want to thank you for putting up a map of Ireland 🇮🇪 with an arrow showing the location of this place at the beginning of the video, nice touch. Beautiful old church, and older church ruins. The graveyard is very interesting, a bit overgrown like you said. I would not have walked on that overgrowth either. The last thing you need, is to have a old grave collapse under you. The trash in the vault is very disgusting 🫣
    Perhaps one day, a trust can take over the place and get it into shape, maybe even carefully removing the trash from the crypt and sealing it up. Thank you very much Sue and GV, for another awesome video. Take care. 😊

    Gotta love the church ruins ❤. Some may think it strange but I'd love to have a picnic in there. Such a peaceful place.
    If I may I love hearing you guys talk. I am Irish blood, and it just dances everytime y'all speak. ❤
    I love their use of words written on the head stones , its so beautifully spoken. Something you just don't see now days.
    There's something beautiful about death and nature. How life ends and begins anew still clinging to the memory of the past.
    Enjoyed it guys another beautiful graveyard. ❤ God Bless You 🤗 take care

      So we'll said!! As for the squeaky gate, they sure do sound creepy and very fitting for an old graveyard. The ruins are just beautiful, I'd rather have a cuppa in a beautiful graveyard than a busy man made park

    The remains in many of the graves scattered around makes one wonder why even bury the dead when no one looks after the dead. It is truly terrible and makes a terrible statement about our society!

  • @ProwlingTiger1
    @ProwlingTiger1 Před 17 dny +3

    Yeah unless in rare cases- like when the dead can potentially benefit the living- like in the case of Sir Mark Sykes-(shame that didn't work out though), or remains need to be moved elsewhere so they are not damaged and/or destroyed, due to building work or some other valid reason, - rest in peace- should mean exactly that- rest in peace, no disturbing, and even if decay over time means a once secluded resting place becomes accessible- respect should still be shown, that's a least 1 person's or more- final resting place and that should be honored, no matter how old those remains are.
    Also if you are someone who believes that: _... Before respect can be earned/granted in death, it should of first been earned in life"..._ please remember, - that it is not just about the person who died, its also about the people who loved & cherished them, _(whether those people are still around or not)_ and honors the bond, as well as the precious memory those people had for the dead person.

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  Před 17 dny +1

      If there's a church ruin, you can guarantee there'll be graves inside, usually those who have money or they were a local devoted parish family and mass attended

      @@SerenitySueGraveyardsHi 👋 Sue, the HMS Hampshire is quite a famous ship, among those who died in 1916 was Earl Kitchener a British army officer who fought in the 2nd Boer war of South Africa.
      This is the reason, I enjoy grave yards so much, better than train spotting.
      Great video by the way Sue. ❤
