- Join me in the beautiful surroundings of St Baglan's church in North Wales as I visit the grave of Lord Snowdon, Brother in law to the Queen and husband to Princess Margaret. If thats not amazing enough we'll try to find the grave of an apparent pirate....oh and I brought the dog too.
St Baglan's Church, Llanfaglan, is a redundant church in the parish of Llanfaglan, Gwynedd, Wales. It is designated by Cadw as a Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches. It stands in an isolated position in a field some 150 metres (164 yd) from a minor road.
The size of the surrounding churchyard and the presence within the structure of the church of a stone dating from the 5th or 6th century is evidence that an earlier church or churches stood on the site. It is traditionally credited to its namesake, the 7th-century saint Baglan ap Dingad. The present church dates probably from the 13th century. The chancel was rebuilt in about 1800, when the north porch was also added. Unusually, the church escaped restoration during the Victorian era, and so its interior is still little changed since about 1800. Describing the reasons for its Grade I listing, Cadw states it is "a rare example of a medieval church unrestored in the 19th century, so retaining an exceptionally complete set of 18th-century furnishings". It also comments on its "outstanding isolated setting." After it was declared redundant, the church was vested in the charity the Friends of Friendless Churches in 1991, and the charity has held the freehold since 7 February 1991.It has since been repaired, aided by financial help from Cadw.
The church is constructed in stone with slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave and a chancel under a single roof, a south transept acting as a chapel, and a north porch. On the west gable is a bellcote, and on the chancel gable is a weathered cross. There are no windows in the nave, and the chancel has only a two-light east window. In the south and east walls of the transept are small two-light windows. Over the doorway is a lintel consisting of a 6th-century inscribed stone. Internally, the walls are plastered and whitewashed; the roof timbers are also whitewashed. The floor is paved with slate slabs. There is no division between the nave and the chancel, and the transept is fully open to the body of the church. The east window dates from the 14th century and was resited when the chancel was rebuilt.

What a beautiful place ...I have never seen a church like this one...I hope it remains undamaged for generations to come and see... The graveyard itself and the view of the sea, gave me a strange feeling ( all good) otherworldly ... I found it hard to breath for a while....Stunned and amazed ...Thank you for taking us to see this wonderful place..
No problem Anne x
As we walk in these places and slowly read each stone. We find the unexpected gem. A grave yard tells a mighty tale of things we may endever, of things we like to do or love that lasts forever, the stroll will take us far and wide to places hardly heard of , but one day soon we all will be of what it’s truly made of. Another beautiful location and what a lovely interior in the Church.
So good to know we still have places left like this where history lives on.
We're so lucky they still exist. Good to have you on another dead good walk Ian
This was a great tour! The church, the history! Thanks so much👍🏻
He was the first commoner to marry a kings daughter in over 400 years. Lovely old church, beautiful setting, thank you for sharing.
Perfect wild and windy place for a pirate’s resting place. Can close one’s eyes and hear the wind in the sails and feel the spray of the ocean on one’s face. Thanks for the ramble…it’s too hot today where I have to walk, this was a welcome relief.
Thanks for coming Far Camp 😃
What a magnificent little church. It’s so unique and untouched. Thanks for the upload 👍
What a beautiful final resting place.
Lord Snowdon was a great addition to the Royal Family.
A beautiful location for a cool talented man who lived life to the full.
It@ very isolated, why did they chose such a place, w!s his parents bur>Ed there? I'm sure his children with Pri,cess Margaret won't be buried there.
Lindo lugar por não traduzir para o português???🇧🇷🇬🇧👑
The carved decorated bench to the right of the communion table in the chancel is called a misericord. A foldable seat for clergy. Probably the only pre-Reformation item left in that little church.
We had a day off school when Princess Margaret married Anthony Armstrong Jones. He was given a title - Lord Snowdon, to enable him to marry Margaret. We watched the wedding on a small black and white TV. It must have been 1962 ish. I was 10 years old.
He did not need a title to marry Princess Margaret. They married on 6th May 1960 - he was not created Earl of Snowdon and Viscount Linley, of Nymans in the County of Sussex, until 6 October 1961, just before their son was born.
Oh, my great uncle Tony, how I miss him, it’s amazing that you’ve been to visit him 💙
I must visit again soon.
I’ve recently started watching your videos, I find absolute peace in them, thank you 🙏🏻
May I ask more about why he was buried here, in an abandoned church?
@@wcfheadshots240 He's buried near to his father. This is the burial plot for the Armstrong Jones family, who are Welsh. The current 2nd Earl of Snowdon will also be buried here.
@@ds1868 you’re absolutely right, sorry I hadn’t seen any notifications I had to start a new channel
What a humble little church, one can imagine how many baptisms, weddings and funerals took place.
Rest in peace Queen Elizabeth and all Queens and Kings
The Stone above the door is from the Roman period when the first Church was built. It has a early Cymric inscription.
Can u further explain 'Cymric' for me please... people & time period. Thanks.
Thank u for the explanation. I appreciate u taking the time to do so.
Amazing old church, thank you for sharing. 💖
Any other American watching amazed that the church with all those beautiful artifacts is unlocked for anyone to enter? In the US all the items would be stolen within a week of being left unattended! 🥺
Yes, but that’s the difference between America and Britain.
Really !!people can steal from a church ?
Real Americans would cherish historical sites such as this. We have too many diverse ideologies and liberal ideas to keep treasures intact. Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown in the state of Virginia are good examples of trying to preserve our heritage. William and Mary is also a fine institution with historical flare. St. Paul's Church in Norfolk has a cannonball in embedded in one of its walls; a sign that British fire was very real in our fair city.
Yes,I'm American
What is there to steal ? Historical documents are hard to sell. .
What an absolutely beautiful church.
WOW! SUCH A BEAUTIFUL OLD CHURCH,THANKS FOR SHARING!
Thanks Cynthia! No problem, thanks for watching another one
I spent a day with Tony Snowdon (he insisted I call him Tony) back in 1997. He was a guest editor of Country Life magazine, I was the design editor and we were choosing some of his photographs for the issue.
Fascinating Stuart, I'd love to know more
He used to go with his children ,and the Queen Mother to the London Symphony Orchestra Children's Concerts at the Royal Festival Hall after he and Princess Margaret had separated. They once went onto the stage , and the conductor used Lord Snowdon and his children to hold a long piece of garden hose. The Conductor put a chemical funnel at one end, and a brass mouth piece at the other. He then got a trumpet player to come and ""play ""the garden hose before coiling it up to show a French Horn is made . Lord Snowdon said one word, ""Wow ! ""
@@deadgoodwalks I found him to be very pleasant. He wanted the work to be finished quickly so he could show off his 'cottage', gossip about the people in the Country Life office and demolish a few bottles of wine.
I would love to visit this beautiful cemetery and church…. Fascinating 💕
What a lovely place for an old cemetary. Thank you for taking us along. Don't apologize for the "bell" comparison. I liked even had a chuckle over it. Am definitely subscribing 👍.
Thank you R
That cemetery is full of works of art
I’d love to walk around there, looks so peaceful, thanks for the trip.
Subscribing. Fascinating. I would never have guessed that Lord Snowdon would be buried in such a lonesome remote old place. I suppose some of his ancestors are laid to rest here.
Thanks for subscribing Mary. Mother and father are there if my memory serves me right, I also stumbled across his grand parents in my "wrong cemetery" video
Enjoyed your video just wish you would spend more time at the graves eg.Lord Snowdon etc . Would have been nice to see his parents and grandparents graves plus the graves inside the Church would have been very old
What a pity someone doesn’t give the wood a bit of polish it looks in dire need of some but what a beautiful little church.like you I could see the History pouring out the walls
Re the "correction" on the grave stone. Griffith Williams married Jane Jones at Llanfaglan in 1837. Griffith was a farmer, the name of his farm being Cae('r) Coch or Cock, in the nearby parish of Llanbeblig. The farm was later referred to as ''Bronydd or Cae Cock' when up for sale in 1904. It is believed the name of the farm was changed in the course of the Welsh Revival (1904-1905).
Great info! Thanks Brian
Peaceful and serene
What a lovely old chirch
Lovely places in Uk it's it's ruled by kings and queens.
Today i saw full Uk, by grace of God, queens funderal march. .
We can't go and see such places beautiful people, well mannered public, rules, of police, and very clean roads and ever green pastures, , beautiful churches, lovely choirs in the church etc etc etc. Thanks to royal channel. 🙏
I feel that I was in heavy seeing all these. In life I won't see it real , atleast in CZcams i can see.so happy.
Thanks a lot showing all these to world through your channel 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I was in heaven by seeing this
No offense but No, UK is not ruled by queens and kings ,those times are far gone and it wasn't great when they ruled the kingdom ,though . Too much death , colonialism, war , disease, famine vice versa .
According to the 1st Earl of Snowdon’s son David (currently the Earl) from an interview he did in 2018, he also has plans to be buried and reunited with his father one day, and to honour his Welsh ancestry. So I think it’s safe to say that they might build a family mausoleum someday? This would accommodate the past, present, and the future Earls of Snowdon. (Antony had 3 legitimate children and 7 grandchildren, so that’s potentially a big room to fill)
You could be right, there's plenty of room there for a mausoleum
There absolutely are talks of this, no plans as of yet but it’s been a family discussion since we lost Tony 🙏🏻
The church has been abandoned and is taken care of by volunteers. There was one service a year, but that stopped years ago.
It it run by Friends of friendless churches, which strives to save and maintain churches that have been left to decay and are in threat of demolition
I doubt they would get permission to build a mausoleum in that graveyard.
@@janetpendlebury6808 It wouldn't be a mausoleum simply a burial plot for the family.
I can actually picture the gentry sitting in the pew boxes wearing their finery while the plebs park their bums on the benches! Beautiful old church and graveyard. Thank you. Deb of Oz.
I think it got burnt down a few months after I visited, such a shame
Beautiful, windy but beautiful. 😊🏴
Spectacular resting place.
From Rotorua, New Zealand 🇳🇿
opportunist when you see the bell in the tower... quick thinking! i like that..☺️... beautiful, very peaceful place with so much history..i think history, is what draws people like us to cemeteries.. thanks so much for the tour.. these are places many of us will never see in person ❤️
The Skull and crossbones were common on 17th and 18th Century Graves
Many years ago people used to be buried underneath the chapel floor I wouldn’t be surprised if they wasn’t buried in this chapel
Beautiful location, great tour. You made me laugh talking about getting a selfie stick and learning more about history, your learning about yourself and your trade as you go along and it's refreshing. Keep up the great work.
My dad was Welsh.. beautiful country... I have been in there... peaceful
It's too bad that Margaret wasn't allowed to marry Peter Townsend. That might have been a happier marriage for her. Oh well, at least she had Roddy Llewellyn for a while.
They look like Code Of Arms. I so enjoy your videos, this is such a beautiful place! Thank you for taking us here!
Coats of Arms, surely?
Thank you for sharing this incredible beautifull peace of history. I've recently found and started watching you're video's. Can't stop watching.

My pleasure 😊
What a lovely cemetery. Fancy Lord Snowden being buried there. I didn’t know he was dead. A lovely peaceful place. I wonder if his children ever go there and lay some flowers on there for him. Wales is a beautiful place.
You really didn't know he was dead ? Where have you been living this last 30 years?
Spelt Snowdon. You could at least spell the name correctly.
@@tomratcliffe9363 why be a wanker about it?
I didn’t realise he’d passed either. Two nasty comments there 🙄
Thank you for sharing! The history and beauty are amazing……

Kevin! A fab name. There was a small fire in a flat by me. The fire brigade assisted and took th lady out of the flat then asked is there anyone else in the flat! She told them Wayne was in there. ( the dog) funny really, all ended well.

My ex husband Is related to the royal family through queen Victoria. His ancestor wanted to marry a commoner against his family's wishes so he his wife and brother came to America on a steamship. Still have the family jewels and the manor with the family crest still stands in Germany
Excellent a Priest told me the Box Pews were partly designed to keep you warm, that's why there so high

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful spot. Living in USA we don't have places like this. Just found you today 10/09/22
Been binge watching your videos. Great stories!
Thank you very much!
Anthony Armstrong Jones is of Royal Ancestry as well.
No he was a commoner when he married Princess Margaret.
Incredible that it hasn’t been totally vandalized.
I couldn’t make the pirates face /hat out which was frustrating and wonder why the ends of his cross bones were cut off…do you think there had been a larger carved stone at some point? Talking of points, you said there was a pirates grave in that churchyard, but left us on tender hooks wondering what the story about him was? And were any other sailors buried along side? THERR HAS TO BE a story attached! Please can you tell us a little more, from the source who originally told you about him!??
That’s a really lovely church yard l..I didn’t notice Lord Snowdons father buried close by, which is the reason I thought he had asked to be buried next to his father 🤔🤔🤔🤔?..? Thanks for taking us somewhere completely different! Glad you got back to your car in one piece…thought the wind was going to blow you over! Warm wishes from Norfolk! 👩🦳👍💕👏👏👏
Enjoyed tour
Your tour this graveyards reminds me many things thanks Andrew❤ let's their souls keep resting in peace
And for you a poem! For as we walk these lonely places we can read the inscriptions and after a while a story emerges. -- a grave yard tells mighty tale of things we may endever, of things we like to do and love that lasts forever, the stroll will take us far and wide to places hardly heard of, but one day soon we all will be of what it’s truly made of. Very interesting, thanks a lot 👏👏
Creepy just like in the he old vampire movies
When my son was in England for 6 months, he got to Wales and with his name being Matthews, they welcomed him with open arms. He now has a dragon tattoo on his shoulder. I would love to come see the area. Thank you for such lovely videos.
Wales is not in England
What a cool church wow 🤩. Father Dan lol. Beautiful view out back. Some really old stones in there. I’ve heard that Lord Snowden story before (not from Netflix) family I believe was quite upset by that. Very cool place. Thanks !
The view from the back yards decent isn't it lol. Netflix do like to jazz things up a bit, the one on the highgate vampire was awful. Bless you my child, thank you for watching. Father Dan
@@deadgoodwalks lol amen father. It is a beautiful view
It is a very interesting and thank you
Beautiful.
Brilliant!
Kevin... what a great dog name. Cracks me up.
New to this channel, i didn't planned to look at grave sites i was aiming the area and the eye sight of your dog lol, but it was quite nice show of the place you visited to see. And gave me a idea of a spot my family have that is k marked at a cemetery since one of my family passed away. And the ontop ground graves looks interesting actually, to spare place and build in section ontop for those who wanna rest there as in whole that havent become ash to ashes. I shall put that idea and see if the laws here say about that in sweden for those who have grave places before the new law entered here. Interesting ideas
What a lovely old place.
Cool spot
Railings around gravestones and fenced in pews in church - all men and women are equal before God - but men and women think that some of them are more equal than others.
Wow an old church. I believe in those days they bought their pews.
Wow the history ! 👋🏻🗽
You must be a speed reader love watching .
