The BONE-CHILLING MYSTERY I FOUND IN BAGS

- A beautiful spring day, brings me to this beautiful graveyard, today's vlog ends in a shocking discovery, a secret tunnel that turns into something dark and shocking
Thomas Kirby was executed in the hills of Rossmore, Tipperary on January 8, 1921 - a story that did not conclude until January 7, 1990 - almost 70 years after his execution.
How Kirby met his death and came to rest in a lonely hillside grave for so long, has generated renewed interest locally. It is the result of deadly undercover activities by crown forces, operating in west and south Tipperary during 1920 and early 1921, and counter intelligence tactics by the local IRA companies.
Kirby a native of Golden, Tipperary and a man with a strange past - he enlisted in the British army in 1901 at the age of 18, and was subsequently thrown out of the army a few months later on the grounds that he was a harmless lunatic
In 1916 he reenlisted again in the British army - and once again this venture only lasted a few months. Around the 1919 - 21 War of Independence Kirby worked as a farm labourer in Annacarty, Tipperary and was noted for hanging out with the RIC and members of the Black & Tans stationed in nearby Dundrum.
In the lead up to his execution, British military conducted a series of raids on houses in the Dundrum, Annacarty, Hollyford, Rossmore & Clonoulty area - that indicated clearly they had inside information. In response to this, IRA counter intelligence went into action.
Suspicions about Kirby’s engagements and movements started to rise. The local IRA unit deliberately fed Kirby two pieces of information which were acted upon by crown forces. As far as the IRA were concerned - they had their man! Historian John Hassett stated “after four months of intensive surveillance and observation, conclusive evidence pointed to Thomas Kirby as the informant to British forces on the whereabouts and movements of the local IRA men.”
The ground beneath Kirby’s feet was shrinking and IRA intelligence were closing in on him.
Tadhg O’Dwyer, (Commandant of the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Tipperary Brigade) in his BMH witness statement takes up the story:
“Although he (Kirby) disguised himself whenever he was out of the barracks with enemy parties, he was soon recognised. Then one night he ventured out alone and was followed and captured in a public house at Ballybrack near Annacarty where he was drinking.
He was tried by court-martial and could give no satisfactory explanation of his movements. To the charge of spying for the enemy forces he pleaded insanity. He was sentenced to death and was executed by a firing party. Before his death we brought a priest to him, who anointed him and gave him all spiritual aid. We buried him up in the hills near Ballybrack. Kirby’s execution took place on or about the January 8, 1921.”
BMH witness statements note that Kirby was held in a remote farmhouse for several weeks until orders came from IRA GHQ for his execution - other archival documents suggest that ‘he met his waterloo’ on the night after capture.
Kirby’s court martial took place in a farm house in Foilmacduff close to the village of Hollyford. He was executed and buried in Ring hill, Turraheen in a spot where the parishes of Hollyford and Rossmore meet.
Fr John Ryan, accompanied Kirby - heard his confession and offered him spiritual aid on his final journey. Local folklore suggests that Fr Ryan was shaken up after the experience and spent the evening in Daverns pub Rossmore, settling the nerves!
Kirby’s remains lay in this lonely hillside grave in Rossmore for nearly 70 years. On Thursday December 6, 1990, after guidance from elderly locals, Kirby’s body was exhumed - orchestrated and identified by the state pathologist, the Gardai and the local community council.
The Nationalist newspaper at the time reported - “The remains were surprisingly well preserved by the peat soil in which they were interred.
He was buried in this graveyard

Please give the video a thumbs up 👍
Always.

Hi sue! I have been watching another channel out of Georgia called sidestep adventure. I thought you might be interested in. Robert cleans up these headstones in African American cemeteries. The mold on the headstones eats away at the stones. He uses a product called d2 It works with the elements to preserve them. I thought you might be interested in that. 🇺🇸
@PippyP-dm5hc I watch them, unfortunately we are not allowed to touch headstones without family permission, we can't even buy a headstone for those who have none, believe me we tried
@@SerenitySueGraveyards if I ever get to Ireland I want you as my tour guide!!
I wouldn't exactly call it "abandoned" if the occupants are still there, even if they are bagged! You are really brave Sue!!
From my first sight I thought it's abandoned then I saw the bags, which caught me off guard a little. I wasn't brave after that part, I left right after
IRELAND IS SO BEAUTIFUL. This cemetery is especially stunning in àn ethereal way. Great job in getting into the crypt. You are a brave woman. Another wonderful video.
Thanks so much
My thoughts exactly Blue River, beautiful looking location!
That tomb we thought was a tunnel blew us away!! I was proud of you to adventure down under, very exciting! You hear of "bag of bones," but now a witness!❤
Thank you, not a nice discovery but I film what I see and unfortunately this was a bit of a shocker
Beautiful graveyard. That crypt with the bag of bones was creepy! 😱
Yes it was!
HOORAY!! You're in my ancestral town of Cashel in beautiful Tipperary!!
I'm SOOOOOO glad that you made it out of that hole in one piece!! Please be careful when exploring strange tunnels, dear Sue!! Your safety is MORE IMPORTANT than any videos, WONDERFUL though they are!!🙏🙏❤❤
Wow!! Bones in bags!! How shocking!! 😱😱
Thanks for yet another BRILLIANT video, Sue!! You NEVER DISAPPOINT!! XXXX ❤💕👏💞👍🤗
Thank you Nadia ❤️ 😊
This is Sooooooo beautiful! I want to be buried here!! My wee heart is just a beating at the beauty of all of this! Thanks so much, Sue!
Thanks Timothy ❤️
Beautiful green grass against the blue cloud filled sky!! Lovely area!😊
Fair play on getting Into the hole . Very sad to see that poor people ending up in a plastic bag ffs like. I just love the videos Sue and GV they actually cheer me up.. brilliant work guys

It’s like they are treating them as garbage. I’m hopping mad!
It’s a long way to Tipperary😂 🎶
What a wildly overgrown cemetery. What a find!! 💚
🤣🤣 it was lol but worth it, thanks Brenda
🎵 It's a long way to go without you mother and Farewell Leicester Square goodbye Piccalilli 👋 lol 😆
You are braver than me! Thank you for the adventure!😊
Not brave as such, curious lol
This graveyard definitely needs to stay a secret hidden gem! Perhaps the bones were bagged to stop animals running off with them, or just cleaned up off the floor. There's a few missing if that were the case. You were quite the intrepid explorer today Sue, thank you. Deb of Oz XXX
Can't understand it Deb, lots of coffins pieces but definitely some of the bones are missing, was it badly vandalised? Grave robbers? I took the name of graveyard out as its so easy for someone who has bad intent to get in there
Another wonderful video Sue and such a stunning place. Very sad to see someone end up in a plastic bag 😢😢😥We could hear in you voice you were as shocked as we were! As always Sue you were very respectful and a good idea not to name the church/graveyard 👍
Thank you Clare, I appreciate your comment
Great video Sue but you're still giving me the fear lol disappearing down that hole like the white rabbit 😅. Great watching as always. Thank you xx
I couldn't find the mad hatter, so disappointed 🤣 thank you 💖
You have a wonderful spirit of curiousity and courage! Another amazing video Sue. Beautiful scenery and cemetery

Love your videos. But I must say, Sue you are braver than me. I could never climb into a vault or tunnel no matter how curious I was. Love both your and GV's videos. Watching from USA.
If you make it over here, I'll bring you with me 💖

Hi Sue I had the fright of my life, I thought there was a man watching you with a long black coat on it was a gravestone. That place is so pretty.
Omg, you gave me the shivers lol
Amazing find. Great combination of old and new. That open vault with all the bones. Spookie. Much love to you both.
It was a really spooky find, was not expected that
Wow Sue, what an video❤❤❤ thank you for staring with us

Yay! Thank you!
Hi Sue, it’s Leanne from Australia. The cemetery is stunningly beautiful.
Hi Leanne, thanks
Very brave of you Sue! I would have done the same thing in hopes of finding a tunnel! I had a very concerned feeling r/t the bag of bone pieces. Encourage a white sage cleansing for you and GV. Bravo for leaving with a message to ‘rest in peace’. Stay well and stay safe! Hugs and love
Thank you ❤️
Thanks!
Welcome!
Thanks for going into the vault!
I'm glad I did but very shocked with what's in there
😱 omg holy batman a bag of bones . That's so crazy.... thank you for what you guys do for us. Wow
Thanks Irene, pretty crazy stuff!
Hey hi Sue another great video of an old graveyard.
Glad you enjoyed it
Another fascinating video guys , defin NIGHTLY ! 🤣. Love how ya say that 😂
Thank you, just me and my weird Irish grammar 🤣
Very beautiful area Sue, and thank you so much for sharing. Always enjoy your videos.
Thanks for watching!
It's a long way to Tipperary I'm glad you made it there 😅😅very interesting grave yard but could be cleaned up 😮
It is a long way, the lane was just as long lol
Wow you are brave! I wonder why someone would even handle the bones. Why not leave things as is? What an adventure you took us on. Beautiful place. Thank you, Sue!
Thanks toms, I just don't understand it to be honest, I got a fright..first I thought it was a tunnel, then abandoned but to see that in bags, shocking
It's possible that relatives want to re-inter the bones elsewhere or it is being tidied for someone to be added in there. Even if not, its common practice in vaults and mausoleums
@@crimthann-fathach I've never seen it here. Ever, certainly not in bags
Great video! Beautiful graveyard. 1700 markers amaze me. You are so brave😂❤.
Thanks Liz, oh when I seen the bags I got out fast 🏃♂️

your lucky you did not slip, what a dangerous set of steps - strange those bones bagged like that ! thanks for the footage
Thanks Kathy, very strange for sure
It's a common enough practice when tidying vaults.
that was so creepy seeing a bag of bones
I'm still confused, what the heck going on there
Holy cow! What a surprise to find a bag of bones!! I do believe I heard an EVP at about 9:40. (Awesome!!) Love your videos and GV's. God bless ❤❤
I will check it out, thank you
What a brave soul you are to even go under there 👍👏🇨🇦💕
Brave until I saw the bags, then it was a fast exit
Greetings from Poteet Texas
Hi Gary
You are a brave person.
Not brave, once I realised those bags I got out fast
So sad to think they should be at rest and end up in plastic bag😢but great place thanks both
I know Hazel and I don't know why...maybe vandals went in and wrecked it. Still the bags do not make sense to me
Wow, that tunnel was crazy. You are brave for going down there Sue. It is a beautiful and historical cemetery. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it Pamela
People who put these elaborate headstones up think they will last forever but over time these will also crumble.

Thank you for this video, i had a weird obsession with death ,graves and coffins, its amazing and informative what you are doing, very raw and honest. Thanks again most youtubers would cut or blur morbid stuff.
Thanks Christian, join the club we've a great community here who all love this sort of stuff
Another amazing place, so beautiful and then to find that grave site desecrated is soo mysterious.
I just don't get it, I wasn't expecting it at all
Kind of a mix of old and newer graves, but a really nice place. We used to call a skinny lady a bag of bones. Really enjoyed this video. God bless.
Yes, we have used that term too
Is there someone in charge of the cemetery? Maybe they know what is going on, or need to be told. Looks like someone is trying to move in.
I actually don't know, the grass is not too high, so maybe, as I say I saw online about the tunnel..so locals have told the story
You know...I wonder if someone (unadvisedly) got it into his or her head that these bones should be gathered together in bags...to be later transported somewhere else in order to build a latter-day ossuary.
An ossuary like you find in the catacombs of Paris or that old church in Portugal.
My mind boggles...
Mahalo for this video, Sue. Much aloha to you and yours out there!
Thank you, maybe so
Not at all likely. Just pretty common way of clearing a vault. Especially when there are separate bags for bones and coffin parts
@@crimthann-fathach Are those old coffin parts perhaps reused elsewhere? Are they curated collector's items? I wonder why people would even bother to clear such old vaults nowadays. Is there demand from the living to reuse these vaults for latter-day interments? In many places in continental Europe, a corpse may lie undisturbed for 10-15 years, after which the grave site or tomb is cleared out to accommodate more recently-deceased guests. I've never seen what they do with the remains in such cases, to be honest.
~AWESOME~💜THANK-YOU 💜SERENITY SUE & GV...That crypt is huge, looks like it could have held dozens of coffins, I'm so very relieved you were able to get back out 'lol'...👍👍
It was very strange to say the least, where are the coffins and who put everything into bags? Definitely not what I was expecting
@@SerenitySueGraveyards It is most unusual indeed, I also believe there must have been a massive cleanup at some time...but where are the rest of the remains??? Shane
I can't figure it out to be honest, unless someone went in there and completely destroyed the place, who knows but if locals think it's a secret tunnel and it's not they need to close it up now
👍👍👍👍👍👍. Kudos, for taking us down inside to see the bag of bones & coffin handles! 😮. You are one brave lady! ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you ❤️
OMG the coffins rotted away and someone gathered up the bones. Sad how people let these old church yards go to ruin. Actually the tunnel may still be there but closed up with bodies. Cool video. The grass of Ireland is so green!
Thank you, it so looks like a tunnel, hence I went down, I was not expecting this
@@SerenitySueGraveyards If I were you I'd check out the castle grounds to look for a opening. 🙂 Unless you think leads into the castle. Maybe you could get a University archeology dept interested in looking 🤔
@tamarabeinlich7353 I've been to the rock of Cashel several times, one video is here on the channel, it's a fine historical place but I did not see any holes like a tunnel
@@SerenitySueGraveyards It's probably hidden in the floor/ground, the only way to find it would be with one of those radar machines they use to find graves etc. I remember when they found that King of England's tomb Richard the 3rd.
You are one brave lady!!!! I couldn't have gone down there by myself for nothing! Great video beautiful graveyard❤
Thank you so much!
Wow😮 what a video. A beautiful graveyard...finding those bones. I couldn't sleep if i had put someones remains in a bag of some sorts. No you don't do that to someones remains. No respect. Otherwise beautiful Ireland as always. A very amazing walk . and names of a famkly over 100 years.ove you guys God bless❤😊❤😊
Thanks Deborah, I wish I could explain what's happened here but I can't, it sure is strange

Good on you Sue for what you do.
Another brilliant, history rich video.
What a beautiful part of the world.
All the best to you as always.

Many thanks!
In New Orleans, Louisiana, 1 year and a day, after a person has been entombed, they re-open the tombs. All that it left is bones(it gets way over 100 degrees fahrenheit inside and the bodies decay rapidly). They collect the bones, put them in a bag and deposit them in a well inside the tomb. That is how a multitude of people can be entombed in a vault no larger than a large closet.
There is nothing new about bagged bones. Where you are at, somebody has done the deceased a kind service.
That is interesting.
I've actually heard that in New Orleans but here in Ireland it's something I've never seen or heard of
Beautiful old cemetery in lush surrounds. The entrance to the underground tunnel was so inviting, one can't help but venture below. Eeek! Yes, the bags of bones definitely would have had me exiting quick smart too lol. Fascinating stuff though. Thank you so much Sue xx Teresa 🇦🇺♥
Totally agree, thank you 😊
Those broken tombstones is so sad to see
holy crap Sue ! I couldn't believe you climbed in . Cool , I like the way you two travel in safety together ✌❤🤗🤗

You're very welcome 🙏
Amazing Adventure..Amazing Serenity Sue...Always ❤
Thank you ❤️
Hey guys! Great video!
Your reaction to the bags makes me chuckle a bit. You have to understand the reason for bagging the remains and the coffin parts.
It is very common for cemetery workers, funeral workers, to bag the remains of the people who's coffins have fallen apart, including the coffin parts, when they are going to bring in a new coffin, with the family in attendance. However, they usually do it a day or two before the family is there. They will also ask if the family are satisfied with just having the bags, or if they want new coffins for the bones to be put into. Usually, they go with just the bags in the corner, and sometimes they buy one coffin for all of the bones.
So you may have seen a Mausoleum being prepped for a new occupant! They will put the new coffin on the bars you see, as it keeps the coffin off the ground, so it doesn't decay as fast, if the bars are still good.
Looking at the bags, they are fertilizer bags, which does not surprise me, with cemetery workers, so they may be just cleaning it up for resealing later? But I still believe they may have a new occupant coming soon.
And the reason for the two bags, some keep the coffin parts separate from the remains, and some toss them all in one bag.
Keep up the great work guys! I enjoy the videos you are making very much, and it makes me wish I could do the same!
Well said the clean up was neatly done bones in one bag coffin parts in another and very well a new tenant is coming soon ????
Thanks Jeffrey, we don't have ground keepers here on the old graveyards and there is no way a funeral person would do that. Maybe a relative? So tell me this how are the going to move that huge graveslab out of there, the graveyard is packed tight together..I have never witnessed anything like this here and I've seen a lot, I can only think this was vandals or graverobbers, where are the skulls? Why not place the remains in the coffin instead? I've so many questions lol
I'm not so sure, how will they get them in there? How will they remove that grave slab?
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Well, it wouldn't be grave robbers, as they left the bags there, and to move large slabs, they do it the way they have been for centuries, poles and ropes, and big guys with lots of strength.
Once they get the slab lifted, they put rollers under and can roll it off, or they can carry it if they have to. Once the stairs are uncovered, they have better access.
@@SerenitySueGraveyards I would say using a Skid Steer using forks like a forklift has .. As for vandals or grave robbing i don't think so the place was neatly cleaned up i am sure there was more than 2 bags used to clean up the vault more like 4 or 5 bags were used where the rest of the remains go well that will be a mystery
W H A T. Girl, you are fearless. Don’t go in graves. LMAO. Thank you for your courage.❤❤🙏

There’s an old saying, “don’t go down the rabbit hole.”

Hello Serenity Sue and GV❤️❤️❤️❤️😊😊😊😊
Hello 😊
Wow it is stunning there Sue xxxxx
Thank you ❤️
Well, that was unexpected! I hope that you can find out why this was done. It sounds like the bones are being removed.
Why would they leave them there, surely after bagging them up they'd remove them?
@SerenitySueGraveyards That is a good question. I think, based on your comments, that there were, at one time, other remains there, and people have been removing them either for reburial or resale to medical schools, etc. In the US, we have had funeral homes and medical school morgues sell bones and tissue for profit. The people who participated in this are going away for 40+ years if convicted. This is a life sentence for most of them. Also, since it's a federal crime, they have to serve at least 1/3 of their sentence before being considered for parole.
Keep up the awsome wrk ❤
Thanks so much 🙏

It would appear that it could be a receiving vault? Here in the US, because the winters can be so harsh, burials are put off until spring, and the coffins are put into a receiving vault until spring. I live in Upstate New York and it's not uncommon for burials to be held off until spring.
Oh yes, I have heard of these and we have a few dotted about Ireland

You are brave. Like a typical explorer. The bones in a feed bag was creepy cause it was weird.
Very creepy
My pop use work in a cemetary as a groundkeeper and it's possible the underground tunnel/vault you entered has been weather damaged over the years and the coffin broke apart, hence the handles and parts in a bag and separating the bone from the debris to re-bury and fix the tomb. 😊
Oh yes, that's definitely something that may have happened
Mr. Kirby’s story is a sad one. It sounds like the British used someone who wasn’t able to fully grasp what he was doing. May he Rest In Peace.
