The front of the barrel of a ball point pen makes a good half-hitch tool if you don't have a dedicated one.

Nuts Levi, I was expecting you to demonstrate the whip-finish that you normally do with your fingers. No need to use a tool that might disappear under the materials of your desk, drop off your tying desk, or have the cat bat it around. Just use your fingers. They never fall of the palm of your hand and never get lost. I know you do that just like you almost religiously put a half-hitch in before you do your whip-finish. I'd suggest you do a video on tying the whip-finish using your fingers. It's quick, easy, accurate, and you never have to dig around for the tool, be at a loss if you don't have the tool, of have to buy a separate "long-reach" whip-finish tool to put the whip finish anywhere else besides the head of the fly.

Popping off the tag end after using the jam know it most successful if you put tension on the bobbin 180° away from where you are going to hold the tag. I do that by holding the bobbin at 3 o'clock and the tag at 9 o'clock. Then keeping tension on the bobbin, quickly snap the tag back against the thread quickly. If if doesn't break of clean, no worries, just trim with your scissors. If it does, you just skipped a step because you didn't need to use your scissors. This break off the thread technique works almost all the time with 6/0 thread and smaller and not quite as well with 3/0 thread. Don't try this with Kevlar thread - it won't break. Cut the Kevlar thread with the heavy part of your scissor blades. Cutting Kevlar thread with the tips of your scissors will dull the tips amazingly fast.

So is there any real difference between tying a few half hitch knots and using the tool at the end?
