Does your fly line have a loop on it? Try this method: czcams.com/video/NjpvhmNVLnI/video.html
Does the FG knot work in this case too?
Can you guys please make a video how to make a leader
Having a problem with my dry flies dropping below the surface. I used a perfection knot and i did apply floatant to the fly and the line can the knot i used be to heavy
I can't get over the "Click" sound you use when Brian whips out those glasses... It gets better every time!
Stay tuned. Should graduate to a full explosion soon.
I know I'm late to the party but....this was sooooo SOOOO much better than the loop to loop connection I use a paper clip for my stiffener and literally in 30 seconds had a new tapered leader.. now leaders are a non issue in the field.. thank you for this!
Thanks for watching.
thank you for this knot ! I've bought my first fly fishing set, and the Fly line as well the Fly leader both didn't have loops. I've spent around 5 hours trying to tie them together, finally, after hours I was able to tie them with your knot ! Thank you so much for this video !
Thanks for watching and happy to help!
Looking forward to the video on building leaders and the release of your book!
Stay tuned and thanks for being here!!
Woo-Hoo!!! I've been messing with a Tie-Fast Knot Tyer for years. For me, it's been a crap shoot. I have spent a LOT of time fiddling with those knots and starting over. With this, first try was as "smooth as butter". Thanks!
Happy to help! "Like Butter".
Best nail knot video. Until this video I didn't realise that you are pinching the End of the leader in the loop. 😊
Thanks for watching!
Excellent video. I have just used it to attach a tapered 12 foot trout leader that was threaded through the tip of the fly line to make a connection similar to the classic needle knot - and it worked wonders, even with the long and thin leader section I had to handle.
Thanks for watching.
Is this the butt section where you would typically use Maxima Ultra Green? Thanks!
Outstanding !
By far my most favorite knot !
Thanks for being here.
Old dyslexic me actually tied my leader onto my fly line using this knot. Also saw your vid about this knot with Flip. Thanks. I cut off the loop, lol.
Thanks for being here!
Wow, what a colorful fly reel and line! Could see that from a mile away.
Most important to be able to see the fly line. He loves the Orange when possible. Reel is just for looks.
I’m a traditional fly fisher , haven’t fished in years but I’m back at it now. Fairly almost forgot how to tie some of the knots? Just weren’t exactly sure, this really helped. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and please stay tuned.
Great teaching video on this knot. Just starting out in fly fishing and i'll be incorporating this knot moving forward. I also watched your series on flycasting. Great stuff! If any of you haven't watched that series yet and need some help on your casting, i highly recommend it.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words of support. Please stay tuned!
Thank you for the help. I bass fish a lot but had been wanting to fly fish. So i got a gift card to bass pro and got a really nice combo for 125$ off. Your videos help a lot!
Thanks for watching. Hope you'll think of MRO when you need some flies, gear and accessories moving forward.
Keen as mustard to get hold of your book, Brian!!!!!!!!!
SuperNagz We are too! C’mon Brian....cough it up!!’
I’m starting in fly fishing and this video make my day, thank you!
Thanks for watching.
Excellent video. I've worked out both ways to tie it, and I believe the end result is identical to the 'nail knot'. This is however a much easier way to tie it neatly and I like that it doesn't require a special tool that I can never seem to find :-)
Well, you can find the tools at www.madriveroutfitters.com but they are pretty much the same knot. Thanks for watching.
@@Madriveroutfitters I meant I can't find the tool I already own. 😂 But thanks.
Never did care for loop to loop. Time to get this one down pat. Thank You!
Thanks for watching.
Your channel had been so helpful. I was surprised with a fly rod for Christmas and I'm itching to get it and learn just waiting for this Cleveland weather to turn!
Glad to help! Thanks for watching and stay tuned.
Hi Brian, I'm pretty sure that 'Lather's Wire' is what in Canada we'd call Rebar wire. It's for tying the steel (rebar) in concrete together before a pour. Thanks for the great videos, I've learned a lot from you. Big fan of your work.
Thanks for watching! We'll pass this on to him.
Terrific instruction. I screwed up my first attempt as the leader was too short. I nailed, no pun intended, the second attempt and the third one. A short piece of stiff coat hanger works well as the "nail". Thanks!
Excellent. Glad to help. A straightened paper clip works well also! Thanks for watching.
So freaking simple. I got away from fly fishing for years and forgot how to do some of these things. I really enjoy your videos and guests, especially the no BS approach to doing these things.
Thanks for being here!
Thanks ,took a bit of practice but sorted. Cheers, Lew from New Zealand .
Thanks for watching.
Flip was a favorite to watch. Thanks for the video.
Certainly a favorite of many. Thanks for watching.
Great instructional the knot lasts and lasts so much so that each time I have to do one I have to come back to your video as I have forgotten how since I last did one.
Today it was a commercially made slip on loop that failed way out in a backcountry lake meaning I had to switch to spinning. 7 trout between 2 and 4 lb of which 2 spinning and the fish were taking my new design of cicada flies wish I could have fly fished all day.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this tutorial! Was able to use an old wire hanger by snipping off a piece. Appreciate your videos!
Perfect! Thanks for watching and please stay tuned.
For the last 12 to 15 years I've been using a slight variation of this that's called the needle knot. I was taught to me by Gary Sandstom, the owner of The Morning Hatch Fly Shop. Unfortunately Gary was forced to close this several years ago.😔 The needle knot uses a very small needle to make hole up through the center of the fly line for about 1 inch. Then I use a snell knot to permanently attach it to the fly line. I love this knot because there's no bump from the end of the fly line like you see with the nail knot. I really dislike that little bump as it goes through my guides when I'm landing a fish. I suppose I could use your snell knot and add just a very small amount of thick UV resin to smooth out that bump
Thanks for watching and let us know if we can help.
This is what I was missing! I thought you were wrapping with the left END. Thanks Brian.
Thanks for watching.
SNAIL Knot ? Great Video as Alway's!
Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I cannot wait to cut my loops off tonight!😂😆
Thanks for being here.
I love it. this has helped me a lot.
Happy to help! Thanks for watching.
Thanks! Have an 8 year old gearing up to toss the fur and feathers, great tutorial...My thanks
Thanks for watching and please stay tuned.
Thanks, MRO. My son was practicing casting in the yard without a leader on his line and he damaged the loop. I installed a new leader, minus the factory loop with your method. Works great
Glad it helped. Make sure he doesn't do that anymore. MUST have a leader on there or the equation is not complete.
Love the videos very informative keep them coming.
Okay, we're on it! Stay tuned 🤙
Thankyou. Very helpful. 😊 🙏
Thanks for being here.
Great video I'm going to try this later tonight!

As always an other great video. Very clear. I will try it because I understood also the clear explanation of Plip Pilot in an other video. Thank you very much
Thanks for watching.
Just tied it! Thank you for the tutorial!

😂you fly fishers are like folk singers, I learnt this one from Blind Mellon Chittlin while i was working my gap year down on McKinley’s Plantation.
Always better with a good story.
@@Madriveroutfitters absolutely :)
Thanks for the lesson
Appreciate you watching.
Great vid
Thanks a ton for watching! Stay tuned.
So now I have to watch this a half dozen times and practice.
Thanks for watching.
Love it when he copies Kelly Gallop in snapping his spectacles together. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Thanks for watching. Kelly originally showed these glasses to him many years ago.
I'm here because a 4' gar ripped the factory tied nail knot off my fly line :o hopefully this knot holds better!
Factories don't tie very good knots. This should work for you.
Thank you , this is the video I’ve been looking for for ages. All the best.
Thanks for watching.
Sometimes I like having a little "fun" with big box store fishing staff... I'll wander into the fishing section and zero in on one of the 20 year old guppies working that counter, and then with a dead serious face tell them "Take me to your _leader!"_ and THEN watch the cogs behind their eyes skip or break a few teeth while they try to process that! - "My what???" 😁😅 "You DO sell fishing line here right?"😂
That is AWESOME! Gonna have to try that one. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for making life so much easier lol cheers l do like this knot especially since l am getting older and a easier knot when your eye sight goes lol
Thanks for watching.
Great video , now to remove all those welded loops off my lines 😉
Thanks for watching.
IF you're a rookie, don’t cut the loop. if you you been fishing for years and years, time to advance and cut the loop.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. It has helped me out A LOT. It was very confusing at first. After I watched it about five times and practiced with a non important piece of fishing string I mastered it! All thanks to you!
Thanks for being here. Happy to help.
Brian, have you ever seen a lathed wall? The lathe is the 1/4' thick X 2" wood strips that are wired together. Plaster or cement is held in place by the wired strips of wood. Sound familiar now? : )
Ron- if you send this directly to Brian via e-mail he will answer you there. He doesn't come around here often. Thanks
Lathers wire is used to tie steel for reinforced concrete
thank you
Thanks for watching.
I definitely need to practice my knot skills. It is the most frustrating part of fishing to me
Practice at home so that it is second nature on the water.
I used a nail not back in my day, but that is pretty slick. That is a perfect connection. Looks so much easier to tie too. I used a the red plastic tubes from a WD-40 can to tie my knots; cant pull on my denters like that thou, but I still know mermaids.....
Thanks for watching!!
Nice👌
Andy K Johnson Johnson Thanks for watching!!!
Gotta get a pair of those glasses if they can be bought as readers/magnifying glasses. My 64 year old eyes need the help
Here you go: www.madriveroutfitters.com/m-45-clic-goggle.aspx
I've seen these magnetic glasses all over Latin America. Never have been able to find any in the USA.
Love the videos, in fact all your series. I've tied the mono loop to my fly line with the nail knot and added the perfection loop. I then connected the leader loop to the perfection loop as per you other video (correctly). However there seems to be some play, 1/8 inch in the loops. I wonder how or if this will impact setting the hook. Can't wait for the store to come online again, I need a 9' 5wt 😉 for my son. I did get a small order in just before you guys went offline. THANKS for getting it to me. Be safe - stay healthy.
Thanks for being here. Looks like things are clearing up and they should be back mid-day on 4/6/20. We'll let you know. Stay tuned.
Thank you for this. This is the best way for me. I use an Allen Wrench from a Yakima rack and it performs nicely as a stiffener. They are everywhere in your tool kits too.
Nice!
@@Madriveroutfitters Question: Do you ever do an Albright knot to connect leader to fly? It's not on youtube anywhere. Seems like a solid connection...
@@dmk5n1 Never. That knot is for two lines….of unlike diameters. Only.
@@Madriveroutfitters My mistake was a typo. It should have read fly-line...
Do you ever connect leader to fly-line with an Albright knot
@@dmk5n1 Not either. That doubles up the line just like a loop. Way too heavy.
I’m super ready for the book.. do we have an idea of when that will be released?
Sorry but it got put on hold here with the move/pandemic. You'd have to check with him directly on his plans at this point.
I got it!
Thanks for watching.
Great technique. I might have missed it in the comments but if you are setting up for tarpon or GT, how many wraps and what strength butt section do you recommend.
Thanks for watching. Please send your question over to Brian at the shop and he’ll be happy to help. Email him is fine or you can call.
I’m working with tapered leader. Is it the thin end of the leader that gets wrapped around 7-10 times? Or, is it the thick end that gets wrapped. It seems to me like the thick end should be wrapped so that the thickest end is knotted to the thick fly line. This one has thrown me for a loop (pun intended)! Thank you for your help! Beginner fly fisher here!
Please send your questions directly to Brian at the shop and he’ll be happy to help. You can email him or call him. He doesn’t monitor here but of course does there every day. Thanks!
"Lathers build structural frameworks for plaster and other materials, creating such wonders as theme park attractions and ornamental ceilings. While lathers once worked with wooden strips called lath, they now mostly employ _wire_ and metal mesh to create structures of various shapes."
Thanks for sharing!
I am struggling with this a lot, I am getting a loop forming on the back end along with the tag end that I’m supposed to pull on to tighten, but that isn’t shown in the video, what happens to that loop? Is it covered up when you wrap the line?
Thanks for watching but best to send questions to Brian directly through the shop. He'll be happy to assist.
so, if using a tapered leader you'd use the tippit end and pull that out??? or, use a short piece of 1X then tie the tapered leader to that??
Mike Dameron Yes, you would pull the tippet out. IX would be WAY too thin to use as a connector.
Would love to get my hands on a book about making my own leaders
Stay tuned!
Since you did mention that the butt section would be there for a loooong time. Once the butt section is tied on, how do you connect your leader and then change out leaders with that setup?
Nail knots to the mid sections and tippet. With this system there is no need to "change out" leaders. Stay tuned though as much more to come on this.
Thanks! great Tutorial! You have great pliers! what brand are they?
Thanks for watching. Not sure exactly but he is usually using his Manely Pliers.
I'm assuming if you are building a leader, you do this with the butt section prior to adding on the mid and tippet, as those knots wouldn't pull through?
That is correct. Give a shout or an e-mail to the shop if any further questions and thanks for watching.
Just curious what type of fly line is that. It's hard to find brighter colors like that.
Mike Crook Flip Sight Line by Cortland. www.madriveroutfitters.com/p-14733-cortland-hi-vis-flip-pallot-fly-line.aspx
This is so helpfull. Hope you can help with one question. The diameter of the flyline and the diameter of the leader/butt are they supposed to be the same? Thanks a lot….
Thanks for watching. No, they are not. Feel free to contact Brian at the shop if you have any further questions.
@@Madriveroutfitters thanks!!
Hey there! Nice channel, good advices!
On this knot now, I’ve tried it before, but 1. I was unable every time to remove the wire without messing the knot and 2. I realized that it usually sinks the coils of the leader into the fly line’s outer layer, messing it up
I found that the Albright knot works better...I’m using Albright knot to make leaders from ever decreasing diameter of mono (tapering it).
Yet I dislike the knots bulkiness.
Would you recommend those knots for #3-5, or you would go for loops?
Regards!
Andrei Ocneanu We use this knot to attach to line and blood knots for the rest.
You actually WANT it to dig into the coating on the fly line. That's how it grabs and holds tight.
A Snell knot is a type of hitch knot (x 5) and as they say "Two half hitches will hold the Devil!"
Thanks for watching.
very good, thank you very much, but I have a doubt since every time the leader changes I have to cut a piece of the line ... 🤔 Best regards from 🇨🇱
With this method you would rarely if ever change the leader. The butt section will remain constant and you will change mid sections and tippets. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the vid-why should I use a nail knot before a surgeons knot when attaching two ends of two different lines?
ristics4 Nail knot for attaching leader to fly line or backing to fly line only. Surgeons or blood knot for mono to mono. E-mail or call the shop if any further questions.
Would this method be ok on a mono core sinker or would it end up stripping the coating and losing purchase, nice video, very well explained.
We do it on all types of lines. No problems.
@@Madriveroutfitters good to hear, thanks for getting back..
Lathers use wire to build structural frameworks for plaster, stucco, and other materials, to create lath.
Thanks for sharing. We pretty much use paperclips these days though.
How do you make the leaders from there? Add two more progressively thinner sections with surgeons knots?
Please contact the shop directly with your questions and they will be happy to help. Send an e-mail or give them a call. Thanks.
Thanks nice Video - is it correct to assume that a knot like that transfers the energy of the fly line during casting better than loop to loop?
That is absolutely correct. Thanks for watching.
I am new to fly fishing, your videos are excellent. I want to replace the leader, how do you remove a nail knot from the fly line?
Thanks for watching. You cut it off with nippers or pliers. Simple.
let me ask / back 50 or so years ago . did they have the line we do today or did they have a 1 basic line and used that for both dry and wet flies??. they where more frugal back then as what we are now as a people in America .
Sounds like a great question for the shop. Send over to them at admin@madriveroutfitters.com and they will answer you there.
Would an FG knot work for this? It's very similar to nail but I've only seen FG for braided line to mono. Same idea though, main line gripping leader line.
Jason Clark Not familiar sorry.
I don't think it would because the fly line is so thick it would not dig into the flurocarbon as is needed with an fg knot
I used a nail knot - didn't know about this version of it. Is a nail knot still fine for attaching a leader to fly line? I used the surgeons knot to attach tippet to leader.
Yes, a nail knot does the same thing. Thanks for watching.
I've been using this method to cut off the loops on my leaders and attach them this way. Is that fine?
As stated, yes. Thanks for watching.
I am primarily a spin casting angler but I want to branch out into fly fishing... mainly dry fly. There are times I've seen whitefish and brook trout feeding on May and Caddis flies and would just like to have that option available.
Glad I found your channel, very informative. Still unsure about leader strengths. What would you reccomend for a scrappy fish say up to 5 or 6 pounds? 3x, 5x, etc... is there a chart to compare fly leader material to say fluorocarbon test strength?
Thanks for being here. Best to send your questions over to the shop via e-mail or give them a call. They will be happy to help.
What are your thoughts on adding a drop of superglue, like the bass guys used to when tying knots with superline?
You can but usually not needed if you tie a good knot.
And sometimes the knot will dig into the fly line also. Some super glue or Hard As Nails will seal any cracks in the fly line where the knot digs into it. Just a thought...
Ive searched for the "The end of the line" book you've mentioned and i cant find it.
Stay tuned.....
What type of pliers/cutter was Brian using in this video ? Thanks
Looks like the Hatch Tempest pliers.
@@Madriveroutfitters Thank You !!
Michael Smith Appreciate you being here!
Does that knot run through the top guide or guides smoothly when dry flying
Yes. Like butter.
interesting and thanks. Good to know that your butt section will last seasons because I don't like the idea of constantly trimming the tag end of the fly line each time you nail knot a leader on that would be an expensive knot.
The butt NEVER changes! Thanks for watching.
Should you put glue on the fly line after you cut it? Heard people say water gets in and makes sink?
Not necessary. As Flip says, this knot seals it up tight. You can if you want though.
@@Madriveroutfitters Appreciate it, love the videos here from CO. Cheers
I know that this knot has worked for you for many years, but I was wondering if the knot would slip at all because there's nothing to stop the line from sliding through (as opposed to something like a double uni where one knot is stopped by the other knot). I don't know if that made much sense, but I would appreciate it to get your thoughts on this. Thanks, Brian!
Oops, I'll email ahhaa
Always best.
Are you wrapping the large loop you formed or a tag end?
He's wrapping with the loop. Not a tag end. Feel free to contact him at the shop if you have any further questions.
Did the book ever come out? I can't find it
Yet to be published but we are hoping soon! Stay tuned and we'll let you know.
