  • The Raven Guard, for most of the Crusade, were reliable allies of Horus Lupercal. But the rediscovery of their Primarch abruptly changed the Legion and pulled them far from the Warmaster's influence.

    Extra Info: When Corax was rescued by the leader of the imperial Army's Therion Cohort, Marcus Valerius, he gathered his 4 commanders to organise them into a new command structure to compensate for their lack of numbers in addition to more widespread implementation of combined stealth and shock tactics in response to the 19th's decimation:
    - The Talons, led by Commander Agapito Nev. These were the standard "Line" infantry of the Raven Guard and often infiltrated ahead of other forces for intel gathering, long range assassinations of key targets and reinforcements to other Imperial forces. These include Tactical Squads of the standard and Support variants, Despoilers, Reconaissance and Scout squads and the wraith slipping Mor Deythan Strike Squads.
    - The Hawks, formerly led by Commander Solaro An and succeeded by the Terran-born Soukhunu upon An's death. They served as mounted hit and run specialists on Land Speeders and aircraft.
    - The Falcons, led by the Xeric Commander Aloni, utilised Terminators of all armour marks, including the Terran Deliverer Squads trained by Horus and desperate for Corax's approval, and jump troops from Assault Squads, Destroyers Squads and Moritats to the Deliverance-born Dark Fury Assault Squads. These were close combat shock troops used for sudden violence when all detail of the enemy is prognosticated by the Talons.
    - The Raptors, led by Agapito's blood brother Branne, one of the Raven Guard who had not been on Isstvan V, a quality shared with the battle brothers he now led. These Raptors were basically the blueprint upon which the Primaris of the 41st Millenium are drawn from, stronger, faster, better than their contemporaries at the time. Where regular Astartes were created over countless years of surgery and service, the Raptors were created in less time and were believed to be the future of the Legion. That was, until "Alpharius" was caught within the ranks of the 19th and later found to have tampered with the Raptor's gene stock. After the end of the Heresy, Corax gave his poor Raptors the Emperor's Mercy, sat in the Ravenspire for one year to have a long brood, then set off for the Eye of Terror to hunt down the traitor Lorgar, being mutated by the Warp in the process.

    • @ArbitorIan
      @ArbitorIan  Před rokem +7

      Bear in mind the crusade happened JUST AFTER the fall of the Eldar. The birth of Slaanesh is what blew away the warp storms and ended the Age of Strife, destroying the Eldar empire and traumatising the entire species. That's partly why the Emperor was in such a hurry - the old dominant xenos species were gone and Chaos/the Warp were still reeling. Perfect time to try and steal some power and attempt a takeover before anyone realises what happened!

    • @Armageddon2077
      @Armageddon2077 Před rokem

      @@ArbitorIan Thanks for this Ian. I forgot about the birth of Slaanesh ending the warp storms. Part of the reason I asked was I remember hearing about or reading that some Eldar Craftworlds were destoryed by the Imperium during the Great Crusade.
      I had to go and look up the names, so this probably isn't common knowledge. However, it seem that apparently the Thuyela and Mor'rioh'i Craftworlds were destroyed by the Space Wolves Legion and the military forces of the Imperium of Man during the Great Crusade respectively.
      If this is canon though, it does make me wonder why none of the Eldar used the Horus Heresy as an opportunity to take some revenge on the Imperium.
      Ultimately though whenever I think of this I just remember what a friend of mine said to me when I asked him about this during the days of Second Edition 40k
      "What did the Eldar do during the Horus Heresy?"
      "Watched it."
      "... and what did they do during the Great Crusade?"
      "Died in it."
      That seems to be about as close to canon as anyone else has come in decades!

      Perhaps he learned from Angron to not always force his will unto his sons.

      1) Mark 6 Corvus armour is more lightweight and runs more silently compared to other armour marks barring the Mark X Phobos armour worn by Primaris Infiltrators, Incursors, Reivers and Eliminators.
      2) This applies to all things in general, but Astartes having the big brain that they have, they'd be able to learn how to move around properly with their bodies and armour as would big athletes in real life. Think of their movements less like Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane and more like the Berserker incarnation of Heracles in Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, which is to say generally quite lumbering and more given to straightforward brute strength but also capable of more dexterous manoeuvres. Marneus Calgar was able to catch a thrown knife in the air with his Gauntlets of Ultramar, twirl it around his fingers and and then throw it back.

    Raven Guard are kind of a meh legion for me. Too many of the legions have a similar backstory of being wide ranging "terror troops" moving ahead of the main Crusade forces, and Raven Guard are just not conceptually different enough from the Night Lords. The stuff about hothousing legionaires is, yeah fine whatever.

    Imagine 40k having "spoilers". It never used to have a live canon like this. Everything just always was - there was no primary source for anything.

    Ah yes the 19th legion because stealth is a totally viable way when you are 2 and a half meters tall and weight the same as a car and use and armour that weights half as much.
    However came up with this was either drunk or had brain damage.

      1). Their armor is specially designed to make less noise and be stealthy, incorporating advanced camouflage tech.
      2). Space Marines in general are NOT some slow moving, clumsy brutes but surprisingly agile & fast moving. Their nervous system is directly linked to their armor, imagine something like Tony Stark's Iron Man suit, but not as lean in design. To quote one of the books: "Something that big & bulky should not move like they do..." Watch the "Astartes" fan-film, in order to get the right idea how they move.
      3). Some of the Ravenguard Marines also inherited Corvus Corax's special psyker ability that makes them ''invisible'' to the human eye or rather the human brain get's affected by psykic energy and can't notice them, even if they're standing right in front of you.
      and last but not least
      4). This is Warhammer 40k we're talking here, a universe so over-the-top, where a stealthy Space Marine is one of the lest ridiculous things.

      @@doublep1980 I have seen astartes, i know the ravenguard had all kinds of stealth gimmicks in their suits and i know astartes are not clumsy but you know what they are? Heavy an now amount of padding and techno magic crap is going to take away the fact that each footspet of spcae marine no matter how careful would make a lot of noise, obviously the idea of steahlthy marines is not the dumbest idea of the legion (The alpha legion is) , I am not saying they couldn´t be stealthy to some degree, ( ligthing night raids, Guerrila warfare, and fighting retreats are all belivable to some degree) but infiltrations? not in a million years.
