  • I got this engine management fault code P202A, which means "Reductant Tank Heater Control Circuit / Open". So there is a problem with with the heater for AdBlue fluid.
    This is the video how I fixed it and solved the problem.
    Here are some useful links:

    Repair kit (replacement parts) - you can get them from your local dealership or from eBay. Please, check the price from dealership, because it can be not too different to those on eBay. Please check compatibility with your car (especially if it's not VW Sharan/SEAT Alhambra). Anyway, here is the link to eBay search results that will give you part number and few choices at a good price:

    That jack adaptor I've used is pretty handy tool to have in your garage. Recommend :) Here's the link to eBay search results, that gives you lots of choices at a good price:

    Thank you so so so much for putting this video content together, our 2012 Alhambra has thrown an error code for the AdBlu heater (reported by dealership), however Seat want £695 for the part and then £180 plus VAT to replace…
    Thanks to your video I will most definitely be doing this myself.

    Hi, Thanks for the video.
    My 2011 Seat Alhambra threw up an engine management light and my VCDS software showed fault P202B, which indicated the adblue heater had a sort you ground.
    Checked with Seat UK that the VW part code you showed in the video was the same for my Alhambra, and it was. Ordered one from ebay supper in Germany for £170 including postage, it arrived 4 working days.
    All fitted and car back on the road in about 3.5 hours.
    Saved me a packet of money and the joy of beating the dealership system.
    Interestingly found out that VW cover this part under warranty, but the idiots at Seat deny there is a problem.
    Thanks again for the great video .

    • @wawayltd
      @wawayltd  Před 6 lety +1

      Dan Gabriel Thanks :) Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't normally replace those fluids. Every time when I replace cambelt and water pump, quite a lot of coolant comes out, so I consider it as partial replacement. As for brake fluid, I think I should do that eventually - I have a pressure bleeder. My previous car, Audi A6 has done 409.000 miles on the same brake fluid :) My Sharan currently has 220.000. But, because I want to keep it perfect, I might do it at some point.. Maybe spring? Don't know :)

      Hi Kubo, till today I thought that heater, level sensor and temperature sensor are in one piece. Now, after good look at diagram in Elsawin, I see some evaluation unit, which is not the same thing. I can see it in my video, I didn't take it out. Probably that could be the thing... But I'm not 100% sure, because I'm not professional.

    My 2011 Sharan recently gave me P203B: Reductant level sensor circuit range/performance.
    So, something wrong with the AdBlue level sensor. So I filled it up, after that, the error was gone.
    Today it gave an error out of nowhere: top up AdBlue, no start possible after 1000km.
    The check engine light came on aswell, but I don't have a device to read the error code. But I suppose it is still the level sensor giving me trouble...
    That's why I watched your video, to learn how to get the tank out.
    And I watched other videos of you aswell! F.e. the timing belt. Thanks a lot!!
    Can you tell me if te level sensor is in the heater assembly? Or is it a seperate device placed in the tank?

      If there is a problem with AdBlue, sometimes it gives you mileage countdown. You need to make sure not to exceed that, otherwise there will be trouble starting the engine.

    I've got a P202A error also, however my adblue fluid level was low too. The bottle and spanner have been flashing so I topped it up fully however the spanner and bottle is still flashing and CEL is on. Are these systems linked?? Are you anywhere near Manchester?? Thanks

    • @wawayltd
      @wawayltd  Před 3 lety +1

      In my experience this AdBlue system is temperamental. I hate it. Try to clear the error. Also put ignition on for 30 seconds without starting the engine. Maybe give it couple days to realise that it was topped up, but if there's countdown - do not let it get to 0, as it may become more complicated.
      If none of that helps, I would go for heater replacement. I can't promise it will solve all issues, it's just what I would do if it happened to me, and I'm not a mechanic... Pretty far from Manchester, in Bristol.

    • @wawayltd
      @wawayltd  Před rokem

      It's a common problem with VW. Quite often, it takes time for a car to "recognise" that AdBlue was topped up. My theory is that level sensor can be crystallised, and it takes time to dissolve. It can be a couple of days. Also, the manual says that after top-up, you should put ignition on for at least 30 seconds without starting the engine.
      If none of that works, it should give you some fault code, why it's not happy, then it needs to be sorted. Please, don't use up all those remaining miles. Otherwise, it may be hard to start the car.
      AdBlue is the right pain in the bottom!

    P202A 00 [096] - Open Circuit

    In your case, you had the check engine on the dashboard?

    Thank you for the videos!!!

    • @wawayltd
      @wawayltd  Před 5 lety

      I had "check engine" light coming up few seconds after every engine start. Yours is Intermittent, so probably is not a trouble yet. However, what I don't like about all this AdBlue system - is when you tank is getting low and you need a top-up, then it's difficult to get rid of that "top-up" light if you have fault in AdBlue system and it gives you annoying mileage countdown.
      Not sure how serious is P202A. I kept clearing error and driving like that for like a year, before I found time, will and money to do so. In taxi miles 1 year = 60K miles. But I don't wait till AdBlue tank get empty, and that's another thing to get into for me eventually, because overfilling apparently is also not good...
      I'll just buy Tesla ;)

      @@wawayltd Eventually my intermitent 202A turned to a confirmed 202B. I did the job today, hopefully it will hold.
      I have 2 questions though:
      1-Did the check engine dissapeared right away? Mine did not. I did a short trip after that and it stayed. I cleared the code after the trip , now I am waiting to see if it holds.
      2-The new heater, on the top, where the pump is connected, has two holes. One of them , the bigger one had a rubber ring pre-installed. The smaller one was empty in my case. But I found in the box also a small ring that fits there. Also the old heater cup had the small whole fitted with a small ring. I looked into your video but still not sure if you used the small rubber or not.
      Also for people htat may be initereseted, the old heater had the resistance of under 15 Ohm whereas the new one has it around 2 ohm.
      Anyway, before installing mine, I watched your video al least 4 times, and it helped a lot. Thank you!

    • @wawayltd
      @wawayltd  Před 5 lety +1

      As much as I adore our cars, I hate this glitchy AdBlue system! The problem that you described is so common. And quite often even dealers not sure what to do. Don't want to put you off though... But please get it sorted as soon as you can, because when you run out of mileage count - car will not start.
      If your AdBlue warning sign is in a shape of over-turned bottle, it's all good. But! If it;s a bottle with a spanner - that would mean that it thinks that there's an error in AdBlue system and filling up will not let it go.
      I had it happen to me twice. First, I booked with dealership, and in the morning of booking date I discovered that error cleaned itself, so I cancelled.
      Second time it came with a fault code saying something NOx sensor performance below threshold.. I found on forums and CZcams that cleaning AdBlue injector might help. It's quite easy to do, I did it, but didn't have time to video it.
      Injector is located after DPF, near the place where exhaust is holding to subframe. Easy to reach - just raise the car (safely). It has same pipe connection as on AdBlue tank, electric connector and clamp with a little bolt that's holding it. Try not to drop any of adblue crystals inside exhaust. After I removed injector I cleaned it with water jet made by squishing plastic bottle with little hole in lid.
      There are few videos on CZcams about adblue injector cleaning.
      Than I took the car on motorway and the error cleared in about 10 miles..
      Whether that will help you - I don't know, It's worth cleaning anyway because it's getting clogged up with that AdBlue salt/residue.
      I'm still not sure if I solved the problem though, so I never have AdBlue low.
      One day I'll get my head around it...
      Sorry about load of text :)

      The light is just the normal amber AdBlue top up light. BUT it will not reset. I do not have any fault codes listed and the engine MIL lamp has gone off since I changed the heater.
      Im wondering if the level sensor is damaged - but I would have thought this would show a fault code. I have cleaned the injector ( it was spotless ), I took it for a drive on motorway ( 50 Miles roundtrip ). I drained the tank and refilled it with new Adblue - just in case. but still no reset. It is now at 150 Miles till No-Start.
      Any other ideas of what I might try next ??
      Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

      @wawayltd  Před 5 lety

      I have another commenter to my another video with the same problem, here's what he said:
      I've just managed to clear the error with a vagcom hex-can cable and VCDS software. The cable plugs in to the obd port and allows you to talk to the ECU properly. Expensive fix, but will no doubt be useful for other things down the line!
      I did most of the procedure at the bottom of this page: malonetuning.com/how-reset-adblue-2011-vag-ecus
      Using a cable from here:
      store.ross-tech.com/shop/vchv2_ent/
      It worked a charm, very chuffed. VCDS will basically let you do anything to the ECU that the garage can, static DPF regen, clear fault codes etc.

      The problem that I'm always scared of - when it runs low, gives countdown, you fill up, but countdown still there. Common issue. Currently I don't have time to look into it properly - I just keep it always full, fill up 10 litres every 4000 miles.
      There are options to disable AdBlue, but as far as I know it's illegal.
