Being a Titanic enthusiast; if I was to be on ship and felt a shudder but the crew only said it was a power cut, I wouldn't believe them one bit.
You smartie
But they know much more than you so why not ? Bc 2 times it was fatal the 2.7 million times crew has told passengers about it ?
@@jaybru5399I think the point is this person wouldn’t believe it and be prepared for escape at the earliest opportunity, they’re not saying the crew were lying, just that their guard would be up
Interesting that you have 76 thumbs up. When you say shutter, does that mean the ship is shaking?
@@rknine7998 Yes that is what I meant.
Did Schettino trip and fall into his suit, too?
Oh this is the comment above all comments!
Hey! It happens to the best of us! 🤣
Great point.
He accidentally sailed away from the ship too
😂
“get back on board, f***!”
honestly de farco speaking to schettino was epic
The difference between Schettino and Smith is wild. "Prepare the lifeboats just in case we need to abandon ship" vs "pretend everything is okay just in case we don't have to evacuate"
Believe it or not, Smith was actually a competent captain, but he was under a lot of pressure by the head of the White Star Line, Robert Ismay.
@@dustylover100 I know he was
@@dustylover100This is not true.
Many movies have painted Ismay asputting pressure on Smith, but as a man who himself traveled a lot, he did not value speed over comfort or safety. He was merely commenting on how the ship was making good time, but he fully respected Smith as captain, and did not make any demands on him.
It was custom at the time to proceed as normal through ice, stopping only when it was spotted- Smith told his men to slow speed and change course if they spotted anything, and to come to him if so, and they did.
The mirage that night worked against them, but after the collision, Smith *and* Ismay did everything in their power to save lives.
@@reneedailey1696 Mhm. Even as head of the company, when Ismay was on Titanic, he was yelled at by an officer because of his panicking and he relented. He dropped his "don't you know who I am" attitude real fast because he realized the officer was right and I think that also shows good character for Ismay. He definitely didn't put his pride above the safety of his ships and their passengers.
I am so glad you shared the conversation between Schettino and the Coast Guard commander. That conversation was the best part of a truly horrible situation. I don't know Italian, but it was so clear what that Coast Guard commander was trying to say.
"Vada a bordo, cazzo!" (Get back on board, fuck!)
Seriously, that guy Schettino clearly showed he was Captain in name only.
Best part was when the coast said he may have escaped the sea but they were gonna make sure he gets in trouble
@@kobra6660That's Gregorio Defalco, the Commanding Officer of the Corps of the Port Captaincies (Italian Coast Guard) in Livorno. He resigned from the Navy/Coastguard to become a Senator. He still serves as Livornos representative in the Senate now.
“Captain Schettino, Do Your Job!” 😡.
I understand how angry the coast guard must have felt. He had to scold this man child who abandoned his duty and innocent lives.
Considering he had no problem pulling off a stupid stunt for prestige, cheating on his wife, lying to court officials and abandoning everyone to their fate I really have to wonder about the mans mental state.
If I'm ever on a ship and I feel an impact or the ship starts listing, I'm going up on deck with a life jacket no matter what I'm told to do.
I discovered your channel a couple of days ago, after I had rewatched James Cameron's Titanic, and of course wanted to learn more about the tragedy. And man, your channel blew my mind. I can't believe how amazing you are at explaining all the details. Your passion is incredible. Fantastic work! I was wondering if you could do a video on Deepwater Horizon? Also a movie I enjoyed very much and would love to learn more.
Glad you like my videos! Means a lot! What’s DeepWater Horizon? A movie?
@@HistoricTravels Yes, it's a 2016 movie directed by Peter Berg that depicts the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. It got pretty good reviews, though it seems it took some liberties with how it described the events.
@@AethQueen ah yes I remember that! Great idea! I will add it to my ever growing list!
@@HistoricTravels Awesome, so glad you like it!
@@HistoricTravels It would honestly be a really interesting breakdown as i dont really know much about off shore drilling and how those things float in the water, would love to see it!
The Internet Historian video on Costa Concordia is GOLD. Reportedly "My Heart Will Go On" was ironically playing on the intercom when all this happened. True story.
Your mentioning of the Titanic is right up there with Joe Rogan and DMT.
That video reignited my love for Titanic.
Please don't mention that stupid man's name
No matter what, it wouldn't be a good idea to play that song on a ship.
I remember hearing this on the Telly the coastguard snapping at the captain and I’ll never forget the anger in his voice as he says to the captain that he’ll pay for this
I can just feel the finger purse intensifying as de Falco talks to Schettino.
Ikr.......he was tearing him a new asshole..... deservedly🤬
Captain Smith of the titanic was a hardcore sailor and went down with his ship
right? while it's debatable whether or not he was a causal factor in the Titanic disaster, at least he had the good graces to go down with the ship as opposed to getting a prime spot on a lifeboat.
Smith’s body was never found, most likely indicating that he went down with his ship. But the sinking of the Titanic was not entirely his fault, but it was his fault for choosing to ignore all those iceberg warning signals. While part of the sinking was his fault, you cannot pin the entire blame on him.
34:00 Capt E,J Smith would be rolling in his watery grave if he could see that coward Schettino (interesting that his name sounds like Scat, a slang for a piece of 💩)
@@_djjazzyjake_64s33 he changed course further south due to a warning
@@_djjazzyjake_64s33 wasn’t it said he actually took the warnings seriously and even tried to avoid running into icebergs?
Captain Smith of the RMS Titanic found himself & his vessel in a death-spiral & made efforts to save as many lives as he could. The Cameron movie has him nobly stepping back to the wheelhouse to face his fate, but some reports say he was saving people until the very moment he himself was swept overboard.
Meanwhile, Sh!+-tino was on the bridge entertaining his mistress and upon learning his ship is sinking, went back to his cabin, put on his "Sunday finest" and fled to the nearest lifeboat. What a cowardly, dishonorable, despicable waste of a human. People were dying as he's sitting on the beach thinking to himself "wow, that was a close one". I am not a hateful or violent person, but I am physically stirred by this man & if I could reach across the Atlantic to punch him in the face, I certainly would. The dereliction of duty from the Capt & bridge crew of Costa Concordia will remain as an unflinching stain in the annals of maritime history.
SHITTINO LOL
didn't he say he slipped and fell into the lifeboat or something like that?
@@ItsJayHere07and he also said he slipped into his suit
Captain Smith was no Captain Schettino
The crew who were in the dark as to what was happening until 10:35, should get as much praise as the crew of the Titanic, I mean 4120 people or something in an hour, my god that's awesome. Hats off to them.
Pls do Mauritania and Aquatania
Definitely they should get max kudos. 4120 people in around an hour is awesome!
I remember flying over this. The pilot told everyone we were over it and most of the passengers moved over to see it - lots of adjustments for the pilot!!!
it was super entertaining you get so mad about the captain. you can always tell how absolutely passionate you are about this stuff in videos, and it was SUPER clear in this video. Amazing work as always!
Honestly I’ve had no interest in ships or boating but your videos are super entertaining
Wow, the conversation between schettino and the cost guard was intense
What Schettino did is just truly unforgivable. I hope he's never put in charge of another ship ever again.
He actually got off lightly with just a 16 year sentence- *(that he most likely won't serve the entire duration of anyways).*
But also I think- never mind another ship- he should never be allowed to be in charge of anything ever again basically, especially anything that involves the lives of other people, and if he or anyone else- thinks that that's too harsh or unfair of a price to pay, to never again have a career or success even - hell no its not! Because- he gets to live on with his life, those 32 innocent victims however did not...
Sam, your passion and clarity on this topic - especially regarding the negligence of the CC crew - is inspiring, you've also drawn out how this ship's sinking resembled or didn't resemble) Titanic's sinking. Here's to you, Mr. Sam! Full steam ahead for @HistoricTravels. 🌊🚢
Agreed. Full steam ahead! 2 days later... We made it through the Ice field! 🧊 A Gift For Sam
Another more modern captain that puts Schettino to shame is the captain of the Andrea Doria. He and his officers were the absolute last people off of their ship. Then again, it's not difficult to be a better captain than Schettino.
Till his deathbed he kept asking if all his passengers were off the ship safely. What a captain 😢
The story of the Andrea Doria is painful. The ship was moving too fast in a fog bank, and had a well-known tendency to list. Once shit happened, though, the captain and crew behaved properly. May that captain rest in peace.
It’s crazy how the evacuation process was carried out far better on the Titanic than on a modern day vessel like the Costa Concordia. Gotta love modern times…
Gotta love Italian carelessness
And at least captain smith didn't didn't abandon the titanic
crew did fill the lifeboats tho and come back for more unlike the titanic crew did
@@jonthecontthe captain of the titanic actually tried getting the lifeboats back to the ship to get more people
@@kobra6660Yes !! Captain Smith was no Captain Schettino
The Costa Concordia was a classic example of how people react different in stressful situations. Some people, including many of the passengers, became hysterically irrational in the situation, whereas others remained calm. It seems that many of the passengers seemed to literally think they were in the Titanic movie, when in fact the Costa Concordia was visibly in very shallow water, land was clearly visible and large rocks were within touching distance. Some people seriously injured themselves diving overboard when there was absolutely no need to (they could have literally stepped off the ship, or indeed virtually waded across onto the rocks). The complete lack of leadership and organisation no doubt badly exacerbated the situation.
The crew were clearly very efficient at evacuating once they started. They even manage to evacuate the captain, and we all know he usually goes down with the ship
Really fascinating synopsis of that disaster! Some of the details I already knew, like the captain deserting his post, trying to excuse it, and his trial and conviction, and the 30-odd passengers who died (I believe two of them would never be found)...along with the severe contamination of the wreck, not just from its fuel supply, but also from the corpses that were also trapped and all the perishable stuffs that were on the ship at that time and decomposed, turning the whole thing into a biological disaster and impossible for the ship to be returned to service, thus prompting its eventual demolition. But there were some things I didn't know...such as a helmsman, the man directly responsible for directions, not being able to speak either of the two main languages required for all crew to know?? And the whole bridge crew being in on the captain's attempted cover-up of the severity of the situation?? And what's with only SEVEN flood compartments on a ship of that size?? Olympic and Titanic had more than twice as many compartments!!
What the HELL are they teaching in Italian navigation schools these days?? My grandfather, my mother's father, was Sicilian and graduated from those same schools in the 1920s. He served and commanded merchant ships for Italy and America, the latter of which he did through World War II, Korea, and Vietnam before retiring in '72...and he NEVER lost a ship! Had he been alive to see this unfold, he would have wanted to kill that captain for everything he let happen!
Remind me never to book a cruise on a Costa ship. I'd feel safer booking a 3d-class cruise on White Star's Olympic; at least I know I would make it to my destination alive and well.
All the bodies are found. The two missing were found around the time it got floated
Numbskull
Well put! My feelings exactly!
Dude this is the best channel I have found on this subject. You are knowledgeable, you have the perfect amount of graphics and media but no frills and over produced stuff. You explain things really well and clearly have a lot of knowledge. You also seem like a really nice guy!
Definitely going to save up and get a historic travels hoodie to represent this channel is fire man.
I'm like you fascinated with with the Titanic. And if I was on that ship and saw that there's no way in hell I would believe a power outage I'd grab my family friends and get securely to the lifeboats
I live Titanic too. I'd do the same as you.
right? I'd be first on the rescue deck with my family to get them off of the ship.
Really enjoy your videos thank you
Honestly because of my fascination with Titanic I will NEVER go on a cruise ship/ocean liner.
@@wiawii You are far more brave than me! XD I can't even handle the thought :P
My mother and I recently sailed on the Concordia's sister ship, the Costa Favolosa, from Brazil to Spain. The best introduction to the ship on CZcams was all these videos of the disaster of the Concordia. We survived. I did note however that while I was hoping to pick up a mobile connection, running up the Brazilian coast, we kept 'a safe distance' from land - too far for a mobile connection. Perhaps Costa's captains have learned the lesson of the Concordia?
Fun Fact: Italian actress Francesca Rettondini was onboard the Costa Concordia when it sank. Horror movie fans recognize her as Francesca the singer from the movie Ghost Ship.
Wow, I didn't know that. I wonder if she has any superstitions about that because she did a horror movie about an evil ship. She was excellent in it too.
When I heard "leaving a massive boulder in the ship" I couldn't do anything but shut my eyes.
Me, too!
Love your Channel. I also just watched another documentary on the Costa Concordia, my second of the day, and found out that "My Heart Will Go On" was playing when it struck the rocks. At least that's the report from a number of passengers. Maybe that was another little Superstition that we should add to the list of ship superstitions. Never have any Titanic themed items, including songs or movies, on board any ship.
Couldn't hurt. lol
Scatino: I left my ship and wanted to rest on shore
Captain Smith: Scatino you are no captain you are a coward
Captain Smith was not no Captain Schettino
Im so glad ive found this channel, its extremely interesting. I have never found myself in these situations (not many of us watching have, if any) but it gives me knowledge of what happens in disasters at sea, and just by knowing these things I can personally try and save lives and myself from understanding what may be happening should I find myself in this situation! Ive never been on an Ocean liner or Cruise but I have been on cross channel ferries many times, including to Zeebrugge crossing where distaster struck in 1987. You do a great job mate!
Obsessed 😍. Literally could watch this content for hours. Thank you for your content!
I love the sincerity of your channel!
Your videos are always delightfully entertaining and informative. I recently discovered your channel and it is making me develop a fascination for what you are passionate about. Thank you for making these!
My favorite channel on CZcams, everything u do is amazing and accurate man keep it up!!! You’ve taught us all so much
This is how you do a channel, very simple set up but his passion and energy for something he really likes makes up for it in a lot of ways and his zeal for it is what makes you interested.. Very good work young man
Thanks for this video, Sam!
I was in Grade 6 when this happened, and for this to happen in the year which would be the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic is quite shocking. The most memorable part is the conversation between Captain Schettino and the Coast Guard Officer.
An idea for another modern day ship disaster is the SS El Faro. The ship, a container/RO-RO vessel, was sailing into Hurricane Joaquin. The Captain was warned 3 times by 3 different officers within a 12 hour period that they should alter course as they're heading right into the hurricane, but he didn't listen and was convinced that his course would keep them out of harms way.. The ship started flooding due to an open scuttle and a ruptured fire main, and lost propulsion just after 6am, and slowly began listing to starboard. At 7:06 the Captain contacted the company to inform them what had happened, and was very optimistic as to the list of the ship and the height of the swells. 7:24 is when the Captain pushed the distress button. At 7:27 is when the Captain finally rang the General Alarm; by then the ship had a 35 degree list to starboard. 2 minutes later, at 7:29am, the Captain gave the order to abandon ship. At 7:39am, the water reached the middle of the bridge. All 33 crew were lost in the sinking. Due to the incredible late mustering of the crew, it's quite possible that some crew never made it off the ship, or entered the water without their survival gear because there was no time for them to put them on. The El Faro went down within 20 miles of the eye of Hurricane Joaquin!!
Also, the company. TOTE, failed to modernize the ship with up to date equipment, such as enclosed lifeboats, like on the Costa Concordia, the amount of lube oil the El Faro had in its sump on its fateful voyage was far below the minimum, and the vehicles were not properly secured. There was so much rust on the El Faro's sister ship, El Yunque, that it was scrapped after the El Faro went down.
There's one part that I have left out... which happened on the bridge as the El Faro capsized.
Thanks again.
Bull Halsey sailed his fleet into a typhoon..
Twice in 12 months. He was warned both times and ignored the warnings.
Been subscribed to this channel for a couple of weeks now! It's fantastic thank you Sam 👍
So interesting, I’m watching despite having seen parts 1 and 2 already 😂
Keep em comin, love your channel!
May God comfort the families who lost loved ones in this disaster. My condolences.
So much negligence all around. This was very interesting and informative. I really enjoy your content! Have you considered tackling the Sewol Ferry disaster? It was horrific and another huge example of negligence (with government cover ups too).
Brick Immortar has covered it really well if you want to check out his channel.
Hey Sam!! Been a Subscriber now for a week or two & am loving the Channel. Especially enjoyed the What if.... Titanic Videos. Saw those earlier tonight & found them fascinating. Also got my mind whirling as I’d never thought of any of that before. I really wish my Dad was still w/us & pre Dementia. He was fascinated by Titanic & other Shipwreck Disasters, obviously passed that on to me & he would’ve loved both your Channel & how you do your Videos.
He was actually coming Home from a Moose Hunting Trip w/some Buddies & were driving along the shore of Lake Superior, the night the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. He told Mom the winds were so wicked that night, they came very close to being blown off the Highway & into the Lake. Said it was one of the scariest trips Home he’s ever gone through & when the news of the Fitz going down broke the next Morning, it didn’t surprise him one bit.
We live in the Sudbury/Manitoulin Island area & when you grow up seeing just what kind of a Storm the Great Lakes can whip up? You gain a deep respect for the Water & what she can do, let me tell you. Anyway...I sent the link to this to my Sister thinking she might like to watch it. She, my Late Brother in Law & Friends of theirs used to take Cruises in the Caribbean often, so they were naturally interested in what had happened to the Concordia. Also my Late Brother in Law was born & raised in Italy, came to Canada w/his Brothers & made a good life for himself & his Family. He was a good man & Cancer SUCKS!! Anyway...Because they enjoyed Crusing & the connection w/Italy, understandably they followed this Shipwreck w/quite a bit more interest.
A couple of years after the Concordia, they went w/their Friends on what would end up being my BiL’s last Cruise & one thing they made certain to do? To get a picture of not just the Lifeboat, but especially the Entryway to the Lifeboats. She showed that to us & then reminded us of how the Captain of the Concordia had “tripped & fell into that Lifeboat”, which was followed up w/...
“Take a look at the size of that opening. Now do you think he got really lucky to hit that opening just oh so perfectly? Or....”
Only way he would’ve made it by “falling into” that Lifeboat, was if he was an Elite Member of any Country’s Olympic Level Diving Team & even then I’d have my doubts on it. Then everything he did & said? 16 years is not enough for a Critter Creature such as that!! Both Captains Smith & Turner went down w/their Ships. Captain Turner was lucky to be pulled from the Sea, unconscious, but still alive after the Lusitania & both did all they could for their Passengers considering the situations they found themselves in.
This guy doesn’t rate licking the soles of their shoes.
On that note...I have a request for a Video. Just one thing...It’s not exactly a Shipwreck, but the sinking of a Oil Rig off the shore of Newfoundland & Labrador called The Ocean Ranger. It’s considered one of Canada’s worst Maritime Disasters in the last almost 40 years. IIRC, it too was deemed to be “Unsinkable”. Sound familiar? I remember Friends of my Dad’s from work from Nfld & Lab coming to the House during the Search for anyone who might have managed to survive & they were in tears just talking to Mom about it. 😔. As I said, it’s not really a Shipwreck, but it is a Major Maritime Disaster, so....Just an Idea.
Thanks Sam for the amazing content & all your hard work. You & Tom Lynskey (Apologies to Tom, as I’m pretty sure I just messed his last name up pretty badly there...) are picking up the Legacy left behind by Walter Lord & several other Maritime/Shipwreck Historians who are leaving us/retiring & running w/it. W/the two of you & many others, this field of History is in very safe hands. 😊. Happy Fourth of July!!!!
I also just discovered your channel and have been binging. Your storytelling is fantastic and engaging. Your passion for the subject is contagious. Ahoy!
Awesome, thank you!
From what I’ve read, the Captain does not need to be the last person to evacuate from a ship. But he does need to stay onboard for as long as its safe to remain onboard in order to help the passengers and crew. He can evacute from the ship, but only when everything that can be done in the relief efforts has been done and its life threatening to remain onboard. The Captain is not expected to let himself sink and die with the ship, but to remain aboard helping his passenger for as long as its safe to do so, and only then must he evacuate. In this particular case, the Captain was a coward and only evacuated because he was afraid, not because it was life-threatening to remain aboard (and this is supported as he changed out of his uniform in order to evacuate and said he “tripped” onto a lifeboat).
He "fell" with his mistress hostess and a packed suitcase in the lifeboat after booking a hotel room in the only hotel Bahamas where he was arrested the next morning.
From my understanding, the general rule of thumb is that the Captain is responsible for _everyone_ on the ship, and it was his job to ensure that as many people got off of the ship (or, later, planes) as he is _humanly_ capable. Hence why the expectation is that he's the _last_ off the ship. Scatino (and a certain _other_ captain off the Danger Coast) did was leave the crew and passengers to their deaths.
... which is a mark of death within the sailor community from my understanding. We're talking that if something bad happens, the metaphorical knives will come out and you'll end up like Ceasar marked.
I dont know if it's written law. BUT to me like a sacred code of honor. Everything and everyone on a vessel if something happens they go for the big fish the captain. They are responsible for the safety of crew and passengers. And for the vessel itself
Hey Sam! I'm a long time subscriber, keep up the AMAZING work!

If it had actually sank all the way it would have beaten the Britannic’s record for largest ship on the floor of the Mediterranean

Hey, love the channel! I have always wondered what the closest shipwreck to the titanic was and how far it is. I don’t know if there is much info on that. But I’d love to see that as a video someday! Keep up the awesome work! 😊
I know that Ballard did find wreckage as he proceeded towards the Titanic wreck position, but he couldn't tie it to a given ship or even any given time period.
I believe the closest ship wreckage to the Titanic is the stern of the Titanic.

It’s kind of eerie when you think about it. Titanic sank in 1912, the Costa Concordia sank in 2012. 100 years and just about 4 months apart from each other.
With captains miles apart when it comes to their ship and passengers.

I am loving your videos. The subject is interesting, but the way you tell it, you're so easy to listen to. I want to say you'd be a great teacher, but more so a great lecturer. This video made me think of an idea for a video...how many captains have actually gone to jail? Is this captain the only one? It's something I've never thought about. Thanks for the videos!
Yep you wonder, about captains and how many actually fail to perform their duties properly especially when lives are at risk. It's the responsibility of the captain to make sure everyone is ok when things go wrong so yeah it's definitely interesting to wonder how many captains have failed and ended up in prison because of cowardly actions. Was awful how the captain behaved in this case. Abandoning ship and abandoning lives essentially 😢

Impressive review. Nice job. TY. :)
Love your videos‼️👏👏👏
I also love your narrative. You are informed and easy in your delivery. Great job😀
A lot of able bodied people were able to jump off the ship and swim to shore between 10 and 11pm, helping more people finding more space on the lifeboats. Obviously they knew how to swim and wore lifeboats.
Wore lifeboats 😅. Haha.
Love the cartoon pic of the captain in his life boat coordinating the evacuation! 🚣🏻🛳⚓️
Yea the captain was told “Get your Mo’fo arse back on board! Passengers get saved first!” And he chickened up. Maritime rules aren’t the same as they once were with the code of honor. “Go down with the ship” etc
Captain Smith and Captain William Turner both went down.. turner just happened to be swept off the bridge into the water also
I wish one day I could talk to you in person about these ship wrecks. It’s refreshing to have someone know a lot of education on these events.
I love this channel.
Great job Sam
Having discovered you’re channel within the last few days, I’m really enjoying the content. The sea is something that over the years has both fascinated and terrified me in equal measure. That captain should of been tried for every unsolved crime in the seven seas.
Gave your video it’s 1000th like!!
I've always felt that its terrifying that Carnival thought this guy would make a good captain. I'm betting when they heard this, they had a huge cringe moment. I also think he should have been charged with 32 counts of murder. When you were pointing your finger at the camera and getting angry like you were talking to the a**hole (no more captain, he doesn't deserve it) I almost felt i should apologize for something. Good emotions there, probably captures everyone's feelings. One last thing, that coast guard officer, needs a raise and a promotion, to Schettino's jail warden.
New subscriber and i love that i found you
You have to wonder what the hell the captain was thinking (if he was thinking at all). Hell, get everyone off while you're literally swimming distance from the shore and worst comes to worst you find out it's a quick patch job, the cruise line puts everyone up for a long weekend and you earn the title of overly cautious, which, in the world of cruiselines I would think isn't a bad thing by any stretch.
Love your videos Bro
Have you heard much about the Bluenose and Bluenose II? Very good story, and there's allot of footage and information since Bluenose II still exists. I grew up in Nova Scotia and toured Bluenose II in Lunenburg as a kid.
another great video
this is fantastic!
i love your videos
I've read that the tradition of a captain going "down with the ship" has lost favor with naval organizations and that today the captain is expected to support the rescue as best they can SHORT OF sacrificing their own life. This makes sense to me, since captains are generally a valuable asset. We see it in the army too, where generals now issue battlefield orders from a command post or a forward operating base, safe away from the immediate combat zone.
The captain tripped into a lifeboat. Didn't even try to save people
