Building a Thatch Roof House: Bushcraft Saxon House (Part 9)

- We continue building a bushcraft saxon house. In Part 9 we thatch the roof of the shelter. We use natural water reed and hazel spars to secure the thatch to the rafters. It took us 3 months to finally get the thatch material into the woods but it's finally here and we can continue build the house. Traditionally, Saxons would have used long straw for thatching their roofs. But those that lived in the wetlands and coastal areas will have had access to water reed. We used a combination of lashing and hazel spars to secure the thatch the roof of the house. When wet, the thatch will be heavy, so it was important that we built a solid foundation and timber frame. We layered the thatch up towards the ridge of the house. Each bale of thatch contained 70 yealms. Overall we had 150 yealms to use on the roof. In the next saxon house episode I will work on building the thatch up to the ridge. The wattle and daub clay walls are still solid, but we need still need to clay the inside of the walls. The anglo saxon house is really starting to look like a cosy tiny home now. We're looking forward to continuing building projects here. Thanks for watching! you dont have any overhang yet at the sides of the house, do you have any idea about that?
Thank you. I watch you guy's and you absolutely relaxed me today! So interesting, creating a thatched house! We are getting a hurricane category 5 in Florida, so I don't think that would last! Lol But, joking aside, I needed this break from preparing for this hurricane. God bless! 😎 ~ Florida, U.S.A.
TA Outdoors Amazing I've never seen thaching be4. Ty
I really Enjoy your vids.
And builds even though they are not historicly correct it still great fun and amazing :D ( history nerd )
Also would love to see some more home builds/restoration
But the reason of this message.. As I in my younger days spend much time playing The Witcher.. I did not expect you to know that or to play games..
And well thinking of that means you at least must have played it. so well. find that fun.
Thanks for the uploads.
Hey TA i love the father son videos, he must be in pretty good shape to keep up with you hahaha. Love your videos, a huge thank you from me and your fans in upstate NY
I know it’s a small thing, but using the pitchfork to keep the ladder from sliding is next-level brilliant. Cheers from the U.S.
Mike, you and your Dad are having one hell of a good time! A lot of work.....granted, but that work, that actively is what keeps you young and vital! I know I'm 69 years young, in a wheelchair and I have a shop to tinker in and a garden for fresh homegrown veggies and herbs and I play in a classic rock band! I also travel and go camping! So I know being active will add many years to ones life. Most of the time I feel like I did when I was 18! This project has taught me and others 2 things. How a Saxon house might have been built and spend as much time with your family! Speaking of family.....when is the baby going to get here Mike? A proud father you are! Thanxz
I just wanted to say, I'm not a bush craft guy or a survivalist guy but watching you and your dad bond and complete this journey together has been the highlight of my weekend. I hope my kids and I will have similarly memorable experiences. cheers.
you are so lucky to have your dad around to work on this project. my dad passed away almost 5 years ago and I do miss him every day.
The garden fork to hold the ladder! A straight up classic from G-dog! Looks mint chaps.
When are you going to do an episode of you and joey d invading and squating TA OUTDOORS viking house........you can keep them at bay with your cattys
Haze Outdoors the man’s a wizard!
You are so fortunate to have been raised by your Dad!! He so fun to listen to! I can only imagine there is no way to know what`s coming next. Ill bet his sense of humor is unpredictably hilarious. Thanks so much for sharing yourselves with the masses. So entertaining and a real pleasure to watch your videos
Thank God for people like these men
Such a lovely father & son bond!
Awesome thing about these videos. No music. No sped up footage. And 2 people having a blast. Wish my dad was as awesome as yours as well as having a brother that like you would be awesome.
Love the videos, Can't wait to see more of what you two get up to
It's always a pleasure to see you and your dad together in your videos!! Great video 👍👍👍
Agreed
For real. TA Dad is great.
I would imagine the hollow reed offers better insulation than plain straw would. If so, then it wins all the stars: cheaper, easier to work with, and better insulation.
That said, I love the relationship you and your dad have. I love that you two do a lot of these projects together and have so much fun with it. Not to mention keeping fit and healthy.
What a great dad/son relationship you have! Both so good-natured & happy to work together... Warms my heart.
I think the food part of these videos is part of what makes these so terrific.
Mình rất thích những túp lều nhỏ như thế này. Vật liệu là cỏ tranh, tre, gỗ,... thân thiện với môi trường tự nhiên. Ngôi nhà bạn xây rất đẹp và nghệ thuật.
Good to see you and your Dad back on the Saxon house. Looks awesome!
Great job as always. Glad Mom and baby are doing well. Can't wait to see the Saxon house complete in all its glory. Your episodes are educational and entertaining. Off to TA Fishing to see you try to catch a shark. Cheers!
My favorite moments are when you guys are having a chat, I feel like I'm listening to friends. I just discovered your channel about three days ago and I'm loving it.
I have enjoyed watching you and your Dad working side by side on this Thatching project today. Great work gentlemen. I really mean Gentlemen. Both are hardworking and work side by side in almost silence. Impressive work. I love the fact that it's you and your Dad. I so wish I had some good memories with my Dad,. Will continue to watch you both complete the project. A Fan from Minneapolis , MN USA.
This brings back a lot of memories. At the Saxon Village Project we used materials that were identified from remains of water reed seeds found in many roundhouses at archaeological sites, suggesting that they used thatch for the roofs. The seeds are inedible and the reed isn't much good for fires, so thatch is the most likely reason for the seeds being there. Also, small observation: your first attempt at thaching is a lot better than mine was. :) White bait is best dipped in plain flour and deep fried, served with a sprinkle of lemon juice and sea salt. Don't forget the chips.
Great to see you and your dad again. That thatch is looking real good. Excited for the next episode.
There's so much to thatching, I can see why it is a time honored craft. House is looking excellent. Thank you for the update on Em and the baby. Best to you and yours.
Love watching you and your dad work together. Roof is looking great!
Wow I'm so glad you guys tried it yourselves rather than got someone else to do it. Massive props and just shows what a little research and common sense thinking can achieve
You guys may not be thatching experts, but you make it look very easy! You two make an awesome team! ♥ Much love.
I am 58 years old and I grew up in Boston Massachusetts and I started working with my father when I was 13 years old doing roofing and then I eventually got into doing carpentry and remodeling & home building and that's all I pretty much did my whole life.
My grandmother is from Ireland and I always admired and heard good things about the thatch roofs but I never saw how it was done until watching this video.
I have heard that thatched roofs are one of the better roofs and can last up to 100 years. I have done rubber roofing, tar and gravel roofing, asphalt shingle roofing and slate roofing, as well as everything and anything to do with residential construction.
In my experience and observation throughout my life I have found that it is not always easy to work with your father and my own two boys have worked with me as they were growing up too and they are now 28 (Brian) and 29 (Patrick) .
This is only the 2nd video I've watched of yours too but based on the comments I have read in this video it seems like you guys have a good working relationship as well as many subscribers who love what you do.
It worked out pretty good for me and my father but he died at the age of 51 and my own two boys listened pretty good and did pretty good for the most part but there were times that they didn't listen and I unfortunately lost my patience with them.
I look forward to seeing more of your videos as I love this survival and building kind of stuff.
God Bless You All.
Dominus Vobiscum

I'm impressed the two of you are trying your hands at a new skill hats off to you both 👍
That’s how to spend quality time with your dad...and enjoy building stuff together..nice to see.
It’s coming along nicely TA.
My thoughts exactly..
I have a very abusive and neglectful father and seeing what a true relationship with a father should look like really makes me sad that I've missed out on these types of opportunities..
Luckily I have a son myself and this is definitely how I will be spending time with my boy!
So in a way, I have a second chance to experience this type of rich, fulfilling and loving relationship with my kiddos!
Good to hear wife and baby are well!
Well I'm happy you are continuing with the roof. Some of us are still waiting to start working at the bar you are going to build next to the saxon house and I think someone is even willing to open a butchery. It takes a village to raise a child and your baby is growing fast! Start building that village ;-)
I like the quick recap for people who aren't up to date with the vids 👍
Looks very secure and you will be experts by the end. You and your Dad work well together.
Welcome back! Loved the video. Can't wait to see the next episode. Great to see you and yer dad working together again.
Prayers and thoughts go out to all those facing a Cat 5 Hurricane in the States.
Regards and prayers from South Africa
There's a farmhouse a few kilometres from where I live that has a thatched roof. It's been thatched with the same thatching for at least 60 years according to my wife's grandparents.
By the way I live 4 hours west of Saxony Germany where the Saxon raders originally came from.
Absolutely worth waiting! You guys are doing a great job. Natives in what is now South Texas and Nothern Mexico used dried "yuca" leaves to roof their rustic dwelings known as "jacales". They did some minor repairs from time to time to them but these roofs could last 35 to 50 years or even more fully functional. They were water proof and provided incredible insulation both in hot and cold weather. I first saw a "netted" English thatched roof while visiting Peterborough in Engalnd and have always been amazed on how simple but practical people, half way across the world, come up with similar solutions to common problems. Im really excited to see the dressed roof in the Saxon house.
What a fabulous effort. Love watching you and your dad learning and trying things out together. Look forward to next video.
Great fun. Great to see you again and looking forward to Part 10. See you guys.
I really need to get back into this channel. Forgot how much i enjoy it.
This is the only building channel I watch that makes me hungry before the episode ends.
It's a happy thing to see you two thatch that house! Looking forward to future episodes.
You both are very lucky man.... you have a very great father ....and your father has a very great son.... Thank you so much for these videos ❤️.... It brings joy to my day............JJ....
Out of all the techniques I could have learned in this video the pitch fork anchoring the ladder is the best.
pretty cool, also I think its awesome spending time with your father like you guy are.
As a roofer, this is amazing
Fire proof?
Grass sod on top?
Walter...gloves??? Just saying!
I've always been fascinated on building things since two years of age and I'm 41 years old now, it looks like that fascination isn't going to stop until I die!
Really beautiful! It gives me a sense of connection to my Celtic ancestors that must have used thatch in much the same way for roofing their modest homes. Watching your videos often gives me that sense of connection. Thank you for posting this, providing a view into the past and for all of your hard work in the building process and in creating the video. It only takes 30 minutes to watch; much, much longer to create! Bless you, your father, and all of your family!🤗
You and your Dad make a great team, the Saxon house looks great I admire your attention to detail using the traditional materials and hand tools. ATB. Many years ago when I lived in England I spent some time in Somerset and Devon they are beautiful counties and a good place to raise a family.
Has been a pure pleasure to watch both of you build together
I feel so good watching these videos. They give me some connection to what my ancestors had to do to make their own homes and live.
The thatch looks great !!!!
We love watching and learning new ways to build on our off grid homestead! Fun to watch.
You guys rock ,as always!
I love that you and your dad work so well together. I look forward to seeing what you do next.
thank you my family and i built a basic tepee structure then covered it with tied on sticks then just tossed hay from the brush hog on top ( about 2 feet deep) in random directions and lengths. literally just tossed it on.
the first year it leaked a bit.
the second year it started growing then dried out and died and the first rain laid it down perfectly.
we tossed on maybe a foot thick coat in the second fall.
next spring it grew again and dried out and the rain laid it down for us again
that year it was almost completely water tight.
the 3rd spring it grew died and the rain laid it down for a 3rd time.
we went back 7-8 years later and it was still watertight and no one knew it was hollow inside.
smoke would still diffuse out through the grass very nicely and yet our sleeping bags laid on the earth stayed dry during the rain and light could only be seen through the door slit.
Many puppies and goats were born inside it.
I had always wondered how a roof was thatched and now, I have a much better idea of how it's done! Thanks, guys! I have really enjoyed all of the videos, so far!
I've been away quite a while so now, it appears you have finished the Saxon house! I'm watching all those I haven't seen!
KUDOS! and thanks a lot!
Wow! It's coming along great! You guys are doing an awesome job! I love you and your dad's relationship. You have a great father. I love his channel as well. Thanks for sharing!
Адвокат Егоров,в сто раз круче хоть и один. Дом поросёнка должен быть крепким!
For 2 guys who say they didn't know what they were doing looks pretty good to me. Let your hands heal and then finish off the roof.
My wife and I were just discussing the fact that you must be professional thatchers by trade, because you look as though you know exactly what you're doing! If you hadn't said you weren't, I would've stood by what we said! Well done both of you! Keep up the good work 👍
I think this is the best roof what you and Dad ever made. Its probably waterproof, and isolated very good. Now you need a fireplace (not big) inside with a chimney to avoid the danger of fire. Or you take the G stove in the winter, nice warm inside for a comfortable overnighting...
Love to watch you and your dad good episode .
The thatching is very cool.
It's very calming to watch.
Incredible work for “amateurs”!! Greetings from North Carolina!!
The kind of father son relationship some of us never had
Lots of Anglo-Saxon pride here. Our ancestors were indeed resourceful. We also worked perfectly in teams and cared for one another. There is a reason we had the largest empire in the world.
Worth the wait.
You and your father are wonderful to watch!
Carol Mc Natt thank you!
Can't wait for the next episode!
Love this! Very elegant, artful, historical. Beautiful. Love your awesome Dad! He is the only adult I trust with a knife. 💝
Great video as always. I enjoy seeing you two work and have fun together.
You Guys are truly amazing. Despite working so hard, it's clear that you find tremendous Joy in what you do. Dead set inspiring! thankyou
Wow wow wow!! Very very impressive!!! Outstanding!!!!!
Damn you! it's 3:50am and I need some sleep but no! Here I sit. Love you guys
Looking great! Cant wait to see the finished product. Love watching all the new skills and products you use. Thanks again for all that you do
Hi guys, great job again, a true pleasure to watch you both having a great time doing something you both love. Us Kiwi's usually mix the whitebait with egg ,salt and pepper and shallow fry them as a fritter and they are very much enjoyed with a nice cool beer. thanks for another enjoyable half hour guys. cheers, from New Zealand.
Always nice to see your dad again. That looks really awesome guys!
love the videos guys the no talking is bliss
Looking fantastic. Looking forward to the next episode.
Great string of videos on this type of construction. Very similar to the construction techniques used in our "Early American History" in the coastal areas of the U.S. Of course these early settlers were from "Europe" and the skills came with them. Still examples today in Jamestown Virginia at the "Educational Park" along with other crafts of our early settlers. Looks like this is a great fun and an educational project. Should be required viewing for school children both there and here in the U.S. Keep up the good work in challenging Bushcrafters to do more with their skills besides constructing a debris shelter and carving a spoon!
'TOP DAWG" LEARNS NEW TRICKS! Son follows in Dad's footsteps. I LIKE the reeds as a roofing choice over straw. The hollow centers make for more insulative value. This should make for some fine winter woodland overnight adventures with shifting cast: Mike, Graeme, Dustin. I'm looking forward to following along. I always enjoy seeing the pallet wood cabin and the g-stove system in your videos.
Hey great videos guys. We are on the south coast too and after stumbling across your pallet house video a few days back and absolutely loving it my youngest son and I have been inspired by you both to try and build our own little house in the woods. Thanks for being so inspirational.
Very interesting construction...but your father son relationship is enjoyable to see.
I find it amazing that somewhere in Britain these guys have built these structures all around the woods. Imagine coming across one randomly 😂
Greetings from Primitive Indonesia brothers ❤ i like your vd😘😘😘
Greetings frm spain

Ohhh glad to see the Saxon build continue.. Well done both can't wait to see more.
I don’t know why but your videos are so satisfying
Really glad to see another Saxon house episode! Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Outdoors is TA, fishing is TA, but don't forget that you guys are TA too. Looking forward to seeing the finished house!
I could not wait to see you go back to the Saxon house. It looks very nice
To see you and dad work together like that is amazing couldn’t say the same about mine which is the main reason I continue to watch your videos amazing 👍👍👍
You finally have thatch.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
At around the 27 minute mark, Dad was talking about sloping the thatch and there is a very good reason you do that, you end up with just the very ends of the thatch exposed to the elements and it preserves the thatch for much longer because less of it's surface is going to rot away over time. I know I'm late to the party and possibly someone else in the 800 comments before me has already mentioned it already but off the off chance they haven't there it is, haha.
The wood is beautiful!!!
Outstanding video! I have always been intrigued by thatch roofs and now you've enlightened this wandering soul! Thanks so much for the detailed view of "how it's really done!"
Amazing. Looks great! Really love the Father Son projects and interactions....
Looking good. Well done to you both.
Episode 9, great job thatching and kudos to you and your dad for a job well done. I'm sure besides waiting on the reed thatching, you have been very busy getting settled in your new home. May this journey continue to evolve and expand with the help of your dad. You both work well together.
I'm loving this build! It looks amazing and accurate. I love how you and your dad work together. It's very educational and looks very professional. I'm sure that the insulation of the roof is incredible.
I am so glad you decided to do a thatched roof. It is Awesome!
