How To Build A Log Cabin - Simple Straight Lap Notch From Hewn Logs

- This video shows a traditional way of making simple straight lap notch using hand tools in a full scribe log construction.
This simple notch historically was not used in living houses, but in small sheds, cabins or saunas where it was not necessary to keep warmth during whole winter. For living houses was more tighter and complicated notches with added windlock mortice & tennon joint.
We will uncover making process of more difficult notches (dovetail notch and Norwegian saddle notch) in further "How To" videos.

Watching wood working is akin to staring at a fire. Can't get enough. Thank you for your work.
Hard skilled work with old fashioned tools, no power tools. Respect.
Though it’s very time consuming, the traditional way is the most satisfying way of doing this work. Just the sound of tools on wood. No machines buzzing.
Great work guys! 🙌👏
Fascinating. There once were log cabins all over North America and it was men from the North who taught this skill that was quickly adopted here in the new world. Thank you so much for teaching my ancestors how to live well and live comfortably. If it weren't for you, they'd still be building hot and uncomfortable stick and daub homes like their British craftsmen taught them.
great video, loved to hear the actual sounds of the work and not music or pointless banter
BFjordsman Exactly!!
Ce sont intéressante 🤔
Friend 'You are right and also no fancy camera angles
In Estonia that's all you ever hear.
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down?? Simply to be negative, I guess. Nice tools, nice job. Would love to see what the completed work looks like. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks lads , for preserving that which is real and bountiful.Hard work, simple sharp tools, patience and knowledge of this labours result. We can live with or within our beautiful forests.Less machinery more skills, we all need to slow down and reflect, production and nurture off soul.Perfect.
I love these videos. They are so calming and educational, demonstrating a unique series of traditional skills normally unseen and unappreciated in these modern times. I can’t wait for more videos like these demonstrating other the notches.
I know this video is several months old but, gotta say it. This IS the best style of home building. This puts today's standards to shame and this is what "traditional" truly means. Been a fan of the channel for quite some time now, the videos just get better and better. Thank you. Cheers :)
These guys obviously know how to put an edge on a tool! Very good work.
I love the sound of the bark being scraped off
Almost like a crackling fire!
Just as comforting too!
Enjoyed that too, and the sound of the axes hewing.
And the lack of human voices...

Watching the operator stop...and wait... for the boardsman to clear the receiving end of the mill shows maturity of job site safety. Bravo for watching out for your friend and or co worker \0/
Love the visual with normal action sounds. No silly music. Thank you for sharing.
That draw knife work is so incredibly satisfying to watch
If you have never done this before, you should really give it a go. Its very therapeutic, not to mention the feeling you have after accomplishing it. I can work a draw knife all day, and even though it is exhausting, its very satisfying as well. Enjoyed the video.
Love to see a chisel at work. Beautiful build
This is the kind of cabin l want to attempt to build. When l was a child my Grandparents lived across the street from a antique log cabin. The really cool thing about it was it had a secret entrance to the stairs that lead to the second floor. Which had an old spinning wheel and a bed. Down stairs it was like the people had left for the day. There was an antique parlor organ and a Victorla record player. We kids had a blast in there. I just want to go back in time and live in such a place.
I'm so glad this channel exists!!
yes indeed, awesome stuff, absolutely love it!
It’s a return to more simple times, a time without industry and the hellish racket that goes with it.
Being able to share things like this is why the internet was invented.
Because internet people don't do stuff in real life
@@flat-earther English isn't your first language is it? Because I don't know what in the holy hell you are talking about. What is an internet person?
@-____- To share information. Maybe this isn't what they had in mind. But I'm also pretty sure splitting hairs wasn't the purpose either!! Why do people have to such douchebags
This is definitely the best side of technology isn't it. Being able too see people doing amazing things. Such craftsmanship.
@-____- Fort Apache was made out of logs
The best production you've released in a while. What a pleasure to see sharp tools in skilled hands.
Beautiful craftsmanship
This was a great tutorial and a very pleasant and quiet construction site . Thank you for not putting some noisy music in the background .
Hello igazi szakemberek nagyon nagyon ügyesek!!!🏠🏠🏠🏠🏠💯💯💯💯
Thank you a lot! Love that "building log cabins" videos, pray for more! 😊
I LOVE that measuring technique you did with the nails and the string it’s GENIUS!!!!!!
It's called a chalk mark.
Nothing to do with measuring, it's a fast way to make a straight line. Bricklayers' use a similar tool called a plumb line, for the vertical a string with weight on the end is used. For the horizontal string and a spirit level is used.
Tell me how so many can dislike this? What is there to dislike? Imagine the first night sitting in that cabin with a fire roaring, all nice and warm, knowing that you put such incredible effort into making it. And having a fine woman there to make dinner, and to make sweet love to. That’s living! Such precision in making every log into a home. That’s inherited talent. Speaks volumes without a word said. A very satisfying video to watch.
All of those people that disliked this are all cops. Cops are NOTHING but SHIT.
The dislikes are from people that have had the life and adventure sucked out of them and cannot conceive doing something of this magnitude as it would require effort and commitment to finish the job ! So use to hitting reset or respawning on their Playstation! Truly no life ! That's who !
They are Joe Biden supporter’s. Typical democrats that don’t believe in hard work
The sound of chopping wood...... So peaceful. Like sitting by a fire or the waves of the sea crashing by the beach.
Stop caring about dislikes and such
My Great Grandfather Blixt built a log home that is still standing strong and looks great. All the modern houses start falling apart after just a few years!
Noticed you abandoned that spud peeler in favor of a draw knife. They work much better.
Great vid. Brings back fond memories of my wife and I cabin building in Canada.
This video is so therapeutic and relaxing. Stress relieve. The sound are amazing and I love each image. I can sleep or simply rest and meditate with this video. Excellent work.
Far out, thanks so much for this video ! So educational. I've never had the experience to use hand tools like this before, and now I am inspired.
No silly music or endless yapping, nothing but action thank you for sharing
Very impressive and educational.

Awesomely amazing. More and more will come if you show them how to build it!
Hard work, respect from Czech republic
I've seen 4 of your videos, but this earned the subscribe! I was thoroughly impressed. I watched a few cabin builds, from other builders, but this one was on the money. Every step was simple and with great purpose. Your cabin is an engineering masterpiece that will stand the test of time!
You guys need to write a book, great video!
Surely one of the best channels on CZcams.
Thanks for sharing!
I remember as a good waking up ever morning smelling my gramma making bread and the smelling of wood burning on a windy winter snow day 🙂
Absolutely incredible
That is unreal! Very skillfull!
Beautiful Work guys! 👌
A sharp ax and and a good eye and doing it many time over,,tis a real art
Nice rhythm. Nice log tones...
Old School....Love It
Awesome video and thanks for sharing
Magnificent!!!
This is the video I needed in my life
BEAUTIFUL!!
Beautiful work!
Very workintensive way of building a logcabin but beautifull craftmanship.
Wow a lot of work tremendously satisfying to watch. I wish it was me I know how it feels to utilize something I’ve built by my own hands I’m jealous.
The logs shouldn't be touching the entire length just the corners. The miss will certainly help with encouraging holding moisture and rotting the logs as well. Good work
Очень хорошее видео!-приятно было посмотреть.
Wonderful, I could almost smell the wood and moss and earth.
There craftsman ship is great, to be able to do this by hand i have no words to say how great it is. The guy building must be building it for there grandson and he is not even married yet. The time it takes to do one log and there must be a hundred logs in a house. This is truly labor of love. The time it took just to straighten both sides of the log and make the top concave and the bottom convex make the two notches for it to sit on the bottom log and have a log on top drill the pegs and pull the bark off the log and cut the finished to size. Just to watch this video with out cringing I had to run it at 2x speed. The first guy to build one of these house by him self must have really loved the girl he was trying to attract. I would say it would take a couple of years for a guy to do it him self. I just hope when she seen it she did not say it a little small, i would have like the kitchen on the other side.
I like that bark peeling tool instead of a draw knife
Beautiful work
Amazing!

Charcoal on a string... awesome idea for a chalkline!
