Building a Saxon House with Hand Tools: Timber Frame | Bushcraft Project (PART 3)

- čas přidán 11. 04. 2019
- We continue building a bushcraft saxon house in the forest with hand tools only. This time we work on building a timber frame using woodworking techniques and joinery such as mortise and tenon. We use saw, hammer, knife and axe to craft wooden pegs to secure all of the joints in place. Firstly, we had to de-bark the logs using a drawknife. We then burned the ends of the logs to preserve them for longer and help prevent rot. This is an ancient wood preserving technique called Shou Sugi Ban. Using a shovel we dug holes to put the jowl posts in place. We cut tenon joints on the top of the jowl posts and then using a hammer and chisel we cut mortises into the wall plate or horizontal support beams. We also secured the ridgepole of the house with the same technique. With the foundations and timber frame now complete, the saxon house is ready for the roof rafters.
In Part 4 we will be securing the mortise and tenon joints together with wooded pegs. We will also be using the bark peeling station to create rafters for the roof. Hope you enjoy the episode! - Mike

So far so good
absolutely enjoying this project, nice job Mike and Dad!
you are doing a great job. I have watched all your videos and every time I get a notice that you put another video out I stop what I'm doing to watch your videos. Keep doing a great job you are an inspiration to all of us. thank you
wonderful videos. I look forward to every one you post.
Looking good, pretty large, should make for a nice place to enjoy a feast, can’t wait for more!
Watching you, your dad and your friends build these primitive structures is very enjoyable. Years ago my dad and I would daydream about doing this kind of stuff. Unfortunately he and I never got a chance to do so. I guess I'm vicariously there with you, planning and building. ;)
It is a pleasure watching these building projects, been following since the Viking house. One thing I've learned in building and repairing (barbed wire) fenching is that wooden poles tend to rot first at ground level: where moisture and air concentrations are highest. Underground there is little oxygen, so the rotting process is slower, as is above ground, where water drips off. My advice would be to burn a larger part of the logs that make contact with the ground.
It's a pleasure watching you and your father doing stuff together and a really cool build
lgwjr white thank you. Glad you enjoy what we are doing
Can't wait for Dustin to stop by for a feast and overnighter, I think the old man should join as well! We need your pops to join in on some beverages and feasting and laughs and stories and ah I can picture in me head
I love when you and your dad joke around, your dad is a funny guy. Nice job
Makes it
It is so nice 👍 to see you guys working together. You must be a wonderful Father that prompts your son to want you to be with him. Likewise you must be a wonderful son that prompted his dad to spend time with you. Hoorah for both of you!
Very clever, Graham - turning your belt knife into a draw knife!
@MysteriousOklahoma first time I've seen it
From Japan,
Every time a video is uploaded, I look forward to it.
I would like to build a small hut in the pine forest, but I was thinking about what kind of means to build.
Your video is a hint of my activity and I feel like I got a light.
It was admired in a very good way, especially while working without power tools.
Please show me a fun video from now on. Let's do our best!
I’m glad to know you inform the technic burning log surface to prevent from rotting as we japanese ancestor ... I feel proud of that :)
Imagine this as a tv show. You wouldn't be able to hear the forest, because they would put music on everything and ff all the relevant parts of the construction. Nice to have it on YT in a way purer form.
Damn right I agree, especially the videos where the music is louder than the people talking, they suck so bad I totally delete them.. However, most think they need bad annoying music for some bemused reason..
I hope you appreciate how lucky you are to have an old man who'll work as hard with you as yours does. The man's a machine!
Hey guys wish my Dad was still around, it's nice to see you two working together, my dad and I did all sorts of projects when I was young. Sometimes I didn't want to and I wish I would have been appreciative of the times together as I'm sure most of us are. Looking forward to the rest of the build good job!
There's a certain quality to the sound of these videos. I love watching them as I'm going to bed. They really relax me with the sounds of building.
Ron Jeremy ASMR
Done with the hardest part! Famous last words! It is all hard! But worth every bit! Since I'm not there doing the work, it is easy for me to say! Ha Ha! I think this is a significant project that will inspire many to build their own Saxon House. If you don't nick, bruise, or other wise bang up your hands, you are not working! I don't feel right if I don't have something healing on my body! I have so many scars from working, I look like I have primitive tattoos! Love this build and Bravo Mike and Graeme for taking on such a project!!! More on the Viking house. Love the Pallet cabin and that wonderful stove! You are teaching how to live and survive like people did 100s of years ago! Thanxz
Our Graeme working just as hard as always there , I must admit I like the longer videos better , it’s like watching a good film to me , so think you’ve spoilt us in the past with them , loving the way this is turning out mike can’t wait for next one already
Haven’t had time to catch up on your videos. Nice to get back watching seeing you and the old man! Your Dad is such a character!
Just watching you and your father doing things that you love to do. This is such a very good thing for me. My father passed away five years ago today at the age of 94. You have to hang on these moments. I'm sure your father feels the same way. You two are something else, I just love watching you cooking and doing things together. I hoped you two cherish these moments
Massively laborious mega time consuming work....and probably the reason it is so wonderful!!! All that labor and effort are a major reason why you love the results. You hope I am enjoying the project? That is a massive understatement...I love it! And I love that you and your dad are working together on it. My dad is no longer alive...and there have been many occasions that I really felt a desire to "borrow" your dad for a while...I think he is a wonderful man. Keep up the excellent work!
I'm thoroughly enjoying this. When I was little, I used to spend hours watching my dad make things. He used a sawhorse, a hand saw, mallets, chisels, etc. The sounds are really soothing to me. Amazing how much you can learn just watching. (Of course, no way my watching would necessarily make it possible for me to DO it. But if you've watched a great deal, it sticks in your head as to HOW to do it.)
The cutting off of the bark is satisfying in a way. Anyone else think so?
Darien Perkins yeeee
The video is extremely interesting, and yes the stripping of the bark imo seems therapeutic... Hard work but worth it! Cheers guys, thanks for sharing!
Why take the bark off, please explain
@@dalemiller5893 By removing the bark the log will last longer... If the bark remains you'll get moisture build up and bugs will set up camp and have a feast! does this answer your question? cheers!
Yes thanks Keith iam from down under. Cheers.
OMG! Thank you for sharing how to turn your knife into a draw knife! Never even occurred to me to do it that way. So convenient for those who don't want to lug the lager tool with them into the wild. Seriously useful thanks!
Omg! Another AWESOME video again guys 👌👍. Luvin it all. Your Dad is a trooper, to the core. .
Heartwarming to see an adult son and his dad enjoying each other's company. Great channel guys.
Jeff Kling cheers Jeff
Thanks for featuring some house designs. People who consider living in this type of house would love this. We will send this to our customers to get nice ideas.
I really enjoy watching you and your father work together. Waiting on the next.
I love seeing your builds. Your dad is a riot. What I would also like to see if you guys enjoying your builds when your finished with them. Spend a few days at the Viking house or other builds. Take some time to enjoy them and share that with us.
This is top shelf you guys are the best good to see a father and son working side by side on a project like this verry pleased I found your videos
This has given me some fresh ideas for a woodland camp. I hope to be involving my niece's youth club in this next project. I think they will enjoy getting out into the woods and doing some house building this summer. Thank you for the continued run of ideas you and your dad provide. Cheers.
I absolutely love your videos! Your dad is a gem!! 💜💜 I live in New Mexico USA, and I watch hours of your videos! 💕
The sound of the bark being stripped from the log is so satisfying. Enjoying the build.
Burning or charring the ends of the posts also hardens them! The American Indian as well as the Ancient peoples of the world used this for hardening the ends of their spears! It works quite well.
I'm enjoying this series as much as the Viking House build! I wish I wasn't disabled so I could do this where I live! It would be great fun and my Grandsons could get a workout and learn something, too!
KUDOS!
These videos keep giving me mixed feelings. My dad hasn't been in my life since a young age and it's been almost a year now since he passed away. Sometimes it's tough to see all the things I could've been doing with him, especially knowing he was a carpenter. But, at the same time I find a lot of joy in experiencing this with you two. Not only do I enjoy the bond you two have, but these videos are great in general. So thank you for that. I can't wait to see how this will turn out
Feeling your pain man. Lost my dad when I was 16 and I surely missed out on a lot, he was an excellent tradesman. Perfectly expressed Neils. Peace.
i love the sounds of stripping the bark off the trees! I enjoy watching you guys, so happy and genial! thanks for so many awesome videos!!!!
Graeme sure comes up with some ingenious ideas, like using his knife stuck in a piece of wood to scrape bark. Looking forward to the next stage.
Love your relationship with your father, that's exactly what I want for me and my little boy. Awesome episode, as always I cant wait to see the next installment. Cheers Mike.
Really enjoying this season house build. Thumbs up for dad!!!
What a beautiful way to spend time with your Father :)
Love watching how you and your dad interact, you're a great team. I lost my dad when I was 13, so it means a lot to me to see a dad and son so close. I have my own son now, he's still a little guy, 4, and he loves to watch with me. So thanks for what you're doing.
Hi, Dad! After watching an episode with your little guy, pick out a project to do together and build even more memories!😀👍
Hi, Dad! After watching an episode with your little guy, pick out a project to do together and build even more memories! 😀👍 edit: my da's been gone almost 20 years now, you're just never ready.
You could sift out all the stones and end up with a decent size wall.
There is something so satisfying about hearing the draw knife stripping bark.
JUST FOUND YOUR CHANNEL HERE IN VANCOUVER...SO NICE TO SEE ANOTHER FATHER & SON PROJECT ON CZcams...ALL THE BEST, 🙏;)
I wish i had such a good bond with my dad. I love to watch u guys, and keep up the good work!!
I'd give all that I have and most of whatever I'm gonna get just to follow you gentlemen on your adventures and be content with the learning experience and to keep those tools finely sharpened... Envious I am fellas, envious.
As always, I'm enjoying this so much.
Mortise and tenon joints were used by the Anglo Saxons, so you're fine on that front.
That slightly exposed end; treat it with sap or a bit of pitch. Saxons no doubt would have done something like that if exposed to the elements.
Im new to your page and I gotta say I'm really impressed. I've not long ago finished watched the viking long house build and thought I'd continue on to this one as I find it very relaxing and to see your dad helping and enjoying to is totally awesome!! I also follow the ta fishing page and without going to deep into it, all I can say is that it saved my life!! Keep up the awesome work guys. 🥇🥇🥇
Time well spent with your dad. Cheers from the U.S!
you two are amazing! and, you know, i have all the wilds of canada to enjoy but that woodland you are in...looks downright enchanted!
Good grief, you fellas are awesome. Love the relationship you both have, i hope there are many young people that watch this and would see you both as an example and strive for relationships that you both have. Thank you both for being an Awesome example to so many. Waiting anxiously for the next episode. From Alberta Canada, Cheers.
Vikings Storm cheers!
I am indeed a boy who is young and do wish to be likd them
Awesome!! Loving these videos!! Awaiting the next one...
The sound of the bark-shaving is super cathartic.
The craftsmanship on this channel is astonishing...
Your best videos are when you work with your Dad! So much fun to watch!!
The sound of taking the bark if a log is just so Nice.
You were correct! Your dad is a trooper!
Good job guys!
Was gonna say Kudos to clever Mike but I can't! Those compliments go to dad. Necessity is the mother of invention. Mike I love the way your dad turned the knife into a log bark peeler by sticking the tip into a ergonomic piece of a limb to create a handhold! Fantastic!!! Mike I will congratulate you on the stand you fellas made for bark peeling. If you made the height lower it would put uncomfortable pressure on your back as you bent to peel. Close to armpit height makes it ergonomic for your body!!!👍👍and have a pint or two on me!🍻🍻
Hi Mike,
Hope all is well and looking forward to Summer. Can't wait for that and your Dad's uploads on TA Fishing through the warm summer months . His videos are a Staple and i can't wait for Graeme to get 200K. Really Special i feel and i hope you Celebrate that for him when it happens. He's the greatest. The quality of the filming and real life content is unmatched. Enough said really.
Steve in Fife.
Fun with Dad! Got to love it. Thanks for another great video. Reminds me of my youth and the "forts" we would build. My brother and I and some friends we're always in the woods having fun!
Love your video's especially you and your dad working together is awesome. Sending blessings
Enjoying from the forests of Vermont! Thanks to you both.
Really enjoyed that, sorry to say now that my Dad is no longer with us, i miss that.Quality time make the most of it
These videos are always so nice, seeing you and your dad just doing things in the woods! Love this series and also the Viking series.
Loving this project/series. You two are doing an amazing amount of manual, hard labor. I love the banter between the two of you and the fun you seem to have despite the hard work you are doing. Thank you for sharing. Looks like a lovely spring over there in the UK. Cheers from Flagstaff, AZ USA
Awesome job that you and your dad have done
Enjoyed Part 3 too.... You guys are a good team..... Father and Son project is awesome....
Just came across your page today. I’ve been watching your shows non stop. Fantastic work! The relationship you and your father has is heart warming!
First I want to say what outstanding quality your show is. Keep up the great work. You mentioned viewers sending in suggestions, so here is mine. When you are drilling holes for a mortise, make holes next to each other as close as you can, only leaving a thin barrier between them; it saves a lot of time and effort on chisel work. Your tenons were excellent too :-) Have a great day!!!
Love watching your videos good to see you and dad working together 😁
Another Great project Mike. Love the videos and the channel. I especially enjoy the love and companionship and friendship that you and your Dad share. That is truly awesome.
Can’t wait to see it finished. Experimental archeology.
Your dad is so wholesome
You guys are great buscraftmen! These series have been keeping me very entertained and have actually inspired my boyfriend and I to start making our own shelter. Keep up the good work ❤️
Loved the viking house build cant wait to see this one come together keep them coming .
Good progress! Well done Mike and Dad! Thank you for sharing. 👍😁
The two of you are fun to watch. Your relationship is admirable. And the quality of the video remains outstanding. You provide a great benchmark for other producers to emulate.
Yes part 3 keep up the good work excited to see more of this series
Tough mans, respect !
Very good work.
All the best & greatings from Germany
Nice Pic...lol
No music, Little narrative, excellent.
Hi Dad! Great work guys! Thank you.
All that bark scrap tinder and kindling for days! lol Absolutely love the content you produce Mike. Absolutely love it! I do look forward to more overnight or multi-overnight adventures more in the bushcrafty style, but these builds are always awesome to watch. Never disappointed with your content. Well done brother well done!
Definitely fun watching you two. Makes me miss my pops. Watching from Vancouver Wa USA.
Totally Awesome video. Loved it. Thanks Mike
I believe you should burn a bigger portion of the logs. If I am not mistaken its the part of the log that is in the ground but nearest the Surface that rots the quickest (depending on soil type and water/air ratio in the ground). Love your videos! They make me go into that creative and childish mindset that feels so liberating and fun
You are correct! My neighbor has a treated fence about a mile long it takes about three years and they rot at ground level ! On my fathers old farm the fence was put in with all locust poles about 150 years ago , almost all of it still standing !
The level of catharsis and pride that is achieved when I build structures like these with my friends and then seeing the end result is wonderful
I don't know why, but I was so happy when I saw the auger again... it's such a simple tool, but it can do so much. This video makes me want to go try making mortise and tenon joints just for fun... I used to own a property with pine trees where I could have done almost the same as you, but alas, no more. So I will just watch your interesting and entertaining efforts instead. :)
Lookin good, can't wait for the next video.
Kinda neat to see your technique on that draw knife improving from video to video
I am inspired
Looking now for a bit of wooded land... not for a saxon house but certainly something rustic and away from city influences
It was fun watching you guys complete your tasks. Thanks for sharing.
You could use pine tar for water-proofing the wood. It really depends on the type of pine but I think you *could* make tar with some of the grounded pine trees found there.
To get pine tar you basicly have to cook resinous pieces of pine, preferrably into some sort of container
but don't forget that tar is very good with catching fire, so keep that in mind...
You might want to look up some variants of the process if it truly catches your interest...Making tar might also give you some charcoal as a bonus.
Ilove the fact you did not add useless background music. love hearing the forest.
After watching car and political content for awhile, this is a nice mental chaser. I just love that little stove you've got. The little oven, the chimney, the size - love it all. So relaxing to see after a hard day of politics and Lamborghini build videos. It's why I also subscribe to the guy that posts videos of sawing stuff on his Woodmizer. A nice reset back to reality.
Thanks.
Enjoying this Saxon House series. Keep up the great work.
Great show. Wished I'd found you sooner. Will be a loyal fan from America. 12.7.23
Brilliant! I really enjoy watching you working together on this project. You’re both golden!
Great video, as always. I can only imagine how long your day was, doing all that work, plus filming, positioning the camera, plus editing. It really is a full time job with overtime. Two thumbs up.
Great stuff...young and older merge ..TA outdoors...chill out time ,thanks.
I can watch you guys work all day. I'd come over to help, but I'm disabled. I love the techniques you use. I was thinking that if you packed clay dirt in those areas where you think water might accumulate, that might help. Can't wait for number 4
Super fun to watch , i like the food you guys make . Its inspiring to see what you can build without power tools . Keep it up you guys are awesome.
Haha, beside the fact that your builds are always interesting to watch, hearing your dad in the background wisecracking to your comments is hillarious 😂
And that improvised draw knife he produced is brilliant! 👍
