  • In this classic motorcycle workshop video log we catch up with Dave Mitchell (from Mitchell's Classics) and he updates us with the projects he's got on the go in the workshop. There's a few things going on in the workshop today, the main new project is the 1954 BSA Gold Star BB34 we have on the bench.

    When I was just barely a teenager I began grinding aircraft radial engine valves and refurbishing them for resale to engine overhaul and rebuilding shops, this included sodium filled exhaust valves. I was trained to keep track of the amount of material removed from cutting the valve face and remove the exact same amount from the valve tip to prevent the valve head from extending too far into the combustion chamber and striking the piston head. I never had a single valve failure out of the thousands I reworked over the years. Those valves sold for a lot of money, but were considerably cheaper than new ones. I got paid for piece work at $1.00 for Intakes and $5.00 Exhaust valves which I saved and bought my new Triumph 650 and the Vincent Black Shadow Model C.

    In the early 70s I bought a new 500 Daytona from the dealer in Madrid Spain. I seem to recall they carried several American car brands along with BSA and Triumph motorcycles. I rode it a lot during the two years I was at Torrejon AB. Never had much trouble with it. So easy to ride. A broken kick starter pawl and an exhaust lifter were the only parts I remember that had to be replaced. It was easiest to get parts from the US unless you happened to know an air crew that was doing a cross country to and from England. That was air mail! The Spaniards were enamored with British bikes. They were fairly rare.

    BB34s are quite rare. Mine was a 1953 version and one of the first with a swinging arm rear suspension. It had a very worn Amal TT carburrettor which, after spending my life limping from kick-back on starting, I fitted a Monobloc. I used it as my normal touring bike and in long distance trials (MCC land's End and Exeter) sometimes with a Steib S350 sidecar. It had a swept-back exhaust which I liked but I know was 'wrong' but in the 1960 s it was just my bike and my main means of transport (the sidecar winterised it). ONN 434, where are you now? :)

    I bought a Tiger Cub in 1971 for £10. the following year I bought a Triumph 5TA Speed Twin in pieces for £30 and a year later bought a BSA A10 Road Rocket in several boxes for £30. I wish now I could also have bought a crystal ball.🤥

    Could you do an indepth video on how to test a dynamo magnito? I didn't understand the loop wire, I have a goldstar dynamo mag I would like to test before putting it up for sale.

    Is there any video work on the sweet running 500? Triumph
