  • Gotta go fast!
    BUT NOT TOO FAST!
    The modern style of gameplay is REALLY fast, and it's all fun and good.
    But I can't help but think about some of the negative aspects it brings to the series.
    With the increased speed, many other aspects had to be compromised.
    In this video we go over the history of Sonic's speed, how it evolved, and where it can go from here.

    Sonic is not about boosting but about momentum. Momentum is the key in making Sonic fast and there needs to be a balance. Going off of the limits can cause some problems. Boost is far from bad but at the same time not quite ideal.

      I choose P-06.
      It utilizes many great ideas buried in the original 06, so it's meant to be a fusion of peak elements from Adventure 1&2 and other previous titles.
      However it also has a bunch of sections specifically designed for ultra speed, which feels really satisfying once you get used to it.
      So we've got:
      - free all-directional movent, wonderful control, e.g. really great SA1ish spindash
      - ton of movement options (not only 5 normal attack but also the freakin gems!)
      - super-speed sections (which are getting better and better)
      Also what I really love about this game is that it doesn't have that annoying slow-down moments like waiting for the dang platform every 2 seconds or having to play the level 10 times to memorise unnoticeable obstacles that throw you down on the lowest shitty part of the level.
      And this is the only game I know that doesn't have the Homing Attack lag and have such a clever placement, that you can smash through enemies just like in the CGI.

    You had objective points backing your opinion, so don't worry about being accused as a fan boy. I think something people forget is that Sonic started as a momentum based platformer. While speed is a characteristic of Sonic, his games were about using momentum not necessarily speed, to progress through the stage, avoid obstacles and defeat enemies. Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2 being the sweet spot of speed and control is part of the reason why those games are so beloved, and why a significant portion of the fan base want a return to the adventure formula in future titles. The fact that Sonic Forces has multiple play styles and an attempt at serious story telling like the Sonic Adventure games makes me think that Sega and Sonic Team are aware of this and do wish to return to the formula or at the very least something similar. There have been hints and signs of a Sonic Adventure remake in the works, but who knows. (sorry if this comment seemed like a rant.)

With a slower sonic i can imagine why. And 90% of the fan base dont hate nor dislike the boost- thats your perception of ppl you identify with and *assuming* thats most fans because of the *environment* you surround yourself with
      And a lot was very subjective. Faster sonic blazing through a level isn't an issue. Its an issue if it is to *you.* alot of his "draw backs" come from him honestly not being that good at the game. No hate- but its honest. Stuff he struggles with and has trouble doing me and many others dont have. And he contradicts himself at times in the video. Sonic is a speedy platformer, when you *memorize* the level layout, and *react* accordingly to obstacles and enemies you're *rewarded* a speedy *forward progression* by *mastering* the *controls & physics.* thats exactly what the classic sonic games were about. Games like unleashed, colors, & gens replicate that very well for people who prefer a speeder sonic. Also the adventure games can be very tunneling as well. Sa2 had some of most linear stages. With looong pathways just to see sonics speed. Sa1 had some of these but not as much. Basically summed down with all the complaints he has- a slower sonic will suit him well. Theres so much more i could go into but its pointless for a youtube comment that someone will TL;DR because it seems im opposed to the adventure games when im not
      If modern sonic it to hard for you to handle, thats fine. If its not your taste, thats fine. If you prefer the adventure formula, that is also fine. I dont understand where we got off thinking peoples *preferences* can somehow be *"objective"* if someone finds dark souls "to hard" for them or "not their preference* id just recommend something like kingdom hearts or devil may cry.
      I wouldn't call someone a fanboy if they prefer the adventure games. They just like what they like. But it is annoying when some lie on the boost games, saying crap thats not true. That does annoy me. Ngl

The boost games are largely based on your mastery of sonic's physics and controls and can be enjoyed even though sonic is extremely fast. Lemme hit y'all with a Sonic game concept that I've been stewing over for a few days now:
    Imagine a game with co-op potential where Sonic's friends have certain specialties that they can use to blow open a region for Sonic to run through.
    -Knuckles could specialize in tracking down certain objectives, and would have gameplay mechanics centered around racking up score/combo counters by taking down hoards of enemies on his way to said objective).
    -Rouge could specialize in stealth-based infiltration designed to avoid conflict and quickly lower defenses of areas so that her homies have an easier time navigating it.
    -Shadow could have a polished run and gun style where he moves at a more methodical pace than Sonic normally would, clearing out powerful enemies and mini-bosses with specialized gear and technical skills like his arsenal of chaos powers. Instead of the edgy guns and weaponry of his namesake videogame, he'd maybe use a refined multi-tool wispon like the weapons from forces, with him going into each scenario with a limited amount of energy/ammunition, and using that weaponry to build up to devastating chaos powers to completely crush the opposition.
    -Tails could work mostly from the background, running surveillance and hacking Eggman's forces and defenses as a support character, but could occasionally be required to either get in his mech and fight his way through the frontlines, or using his flight to navigate the more obscure routes while his friends raise hell out in the open for him
    (You get the point)
    All of this would culminate for one major purpose: Open up a variety of routes in an area for Sonic's team to mitigate Eggman's influence and create an ultimate route(s) for Sonic to run through at super speeds. Sonic's gameplay would revolve around choosing the fastest and most challenging routes to rack up score while racing toward the end goal. All of his friends' efforts would be noted by certain routes that would normally be completely closed off, being able to be accessed. Perhaps certain enemies who would usually seriously hold you up and hurt your time bonus, would be either absent or severely damaged as a result of an encounter with knuckles or Shadow. This would create the impression that all of his friends are working toward an overarching goal and that they are instrumental in his ability to take down Eggman. Sonic's gameplay would be high speed platforming where instead of a boost meter, he would have an adrenaline meter similar to the time break from Sonic and the Secret rings, with the purpose of temporarily slowing events down to let him choose the optimal routes and platforming sequences and spacing without giving up momentum. Momentum would be instrumental here; while Sonic wouldn't be able to freely boost, he would be able to gain a ridiculous amount of momentum, which would allow him to achieve absurd speeds that he would be expected to maintain. Your friends' objectives would assist in limiting the amount of things that can actively stop Sonic's momentum, allowing you to organically achieve a sort of power fantasy of running through this mangled base at breakneck speeds, putting the finishing touches on Eggman's territory and crushing his influence.
    This game could theoretically allow for co-op by allowing a group of up to 4 other players simultaneously complete objectives to open up the map for the one playing Sonic to get through, and their actions would actively influence other parts of the map, making allies' tasks easier or more difficult depending on the state of completion. Because of the wide variety of roles that could be achieved, there would inherently be a ton of replay value here. Perhaps you want to challenge yourself by running through the level at max difficulty by just gunning through as Sonic, from the get go. Maybe you want to do every single objective for maximum completion and have a real power trip as Sonic, moving at hyper speeds and just blasting apart everything that gets in his way.
    In concept, I'm thinking of a much more sophisticated game that builds on the concept of SA2's Canon's core, where everyone is completing seemingly imperative objectives to get to the end goal.
    Thoughts?

  • @JustAnotherMike_
    @JustAnotherMike_ Před 2 lety +5

    I think people forget that high top speed and acceleration isn't the *only* way to give that sense of speed.
    Slowing Sonic's top speed down, but giving him an expansive moveset so that he can overcome/avoid obstacles without being forced to slow down or lose momentum would still keep him feeling fast
    Look at Mario Odyssey or even 64 for an example with all the dives, rolls, and wall jumps that pros do, especially in speed runs. Mario feels quick, nimble, and unstoppable and I think the same idea can apply to the Blue Blur
    _The key is to make Sonic feel nimble, agile and athletic._
    If you do that by giving him lots of movement options, I do sincerely believe that he'll feel really fast and fun to control, even if his top speed isn't as high as the Boost games.
    I think it's very important for his character and game feel that we get that sense of agile athleticism in his moveset, abilities, and animations
    _side note: I think Heroes is really close to ideal Sonic speed and control. Just a tad overturned in the speed, acceleration and control sensitivity, but lower each just by a _*_little_*_ bit and I think he'd feel just about perfect. Though SA2 is still my favorite due to the spindash, bounce bracelet, etc. Like I said in my main point _*_more movement options_*

    • @JustAnotherMike_
      @JustAnotherMike_ Před 2 lety +4

      Important to note, that much like Mario, those movement options have to be useful, fast, and flow nicely with each other and main gameplay.
      They have to be purposefully designed for common situations and to mesh together well; so they can't be too niche
      Otherwise they just feel like a gimmick like Lost World's parkour system

    I agree that the Adventure games seemed to have right, but yet when I shout about bringing back the other characters into the next mainline game - because like seriously its been 14 years since Sonic 06 when Tails, and alot of the others, was last playable - I have people say: I think Sega should focus on getting Sonic right in 3D first. But they already did! It was called Sonic Adventure. But I really hope we shoot for the next game they shoot for that style again, along with the other playable characters because this past decade - ever since Black Knight - has been Sonic or bust and what's the point of having these other amazing characters if we're just going to be stuck playing as Sonic forever? That seems pretty lame. Plus a positive side effect of the other characters being playable could allow the story to be expanded upon, to reflect what they're doing in the game.

    I long had the idea of what if the world around Sonic slowed down once you got to a certain top speed, it would still be blazing fast but you could go faster than the top speed. Such as hazards would slow down, rain drops would hang in the air and such, and if you stopped a sonic boom would come rushing by as the world returns to normal.
    This would give you both the feeling of speed, and kinda alleviate the problem of being too fast to react and control.

    So like sonic Lost world? They did that in lost world where you have 3 levels of speed. A walk for precision platforming, a run for going fast while still having control, an infinite spindash that is literally a slower boost. You can also use momentum to launch off ramps (like sonic utopia) if you are skilled enough. Since that game got lots of hate I don't see sega doing this any time soon.

    • @chaomix
      @chaomix  Před 3 lety +9

      No, I think the controls for Lost World are kind of unintuitive, especially for a Sonic game. Sonic Team just needs to find the right way to program the physics so the controls are responsive. You should be able to do everything with only the analog stick without having to press several buttons to adjust your speed. It just has to do with the values in top speed, acceleration, deceleration, etc.

    • @StarDragonNova
      @StarDragonNova Před 3 lety +2

      @@chaomix Oh, then I think you should do a video about twitch reaction based gameplay (like the classics and boost) vs precision-platforming path-optimization gameplay (by path-optimization I mean the act of finding the fastest path to finish a level).
      If you change the speed then the whole objective of the game changes.
      I feel like the first 2 classic games and the boost games are similar since the gameplay is about memorizing the stage and have the fastest time.
      While Sonic 3&K and the adventure styled games are more similar to eachother since they are more about platforming than reaction time.
      Both styles use different types of platforming to achieve "speedy gameplay".
      Obviously different fans got introduced to the series from different games , meaning that their preference between the two types of platforming differs.
      Not saying that "the boost ability and sonic's mobility makes the game different because it's hard to control" or that "the adventure gameplay is slow and boring" .
      What i'm trying to get at is that sonic doesn't have just "two gameplay styles and we need to keep one", it has 2 totally different platforming genres in disguise, no wonder the fans are so divided.
      I don't think we can overlook how Sonic Team introduced us to 2 different genres. The fans aren't just debating because "one gameplay style is more boring than the other", but because the whole objective of the game is different.
      How can sonic team implement both genres of platforming?
      I think that once we figure THAT question out, then we can have a sonic game that most fans can all agree is good.
      Perhaps a video idea? I mean, I can't think of a more intriguing video title than something along the lines of "Sonic : Two Genres in Disguise"
      I hope it all made sense.

      @@StarDragonNova we'll see how frontiers does it, i imagine the open world sections will be closer to adventure/momentum style platforming, (though it won't be exactly the same since it's well, open world heh, but probably similiarish) and there are rumors that the special stages will effectively be boost stages, which i think is a great idea if true. going forward i think that sonic games should have the main part of the level be closer to the adventure style gameplay, and having mach speed sections from 06, but actually good and pretty much boost gameplay, and specials stages too if they'll stick around. though if they could find a way to combine the 2 styles that would be great, just dunno how they would do it

    • @jasonnguyen1072
      @jasonnguyen1072 Před 3 lety +11

      It really didn’t tho. 06 had great CONCEPTS and BASE CHARACTERISTICS. But not good development.
      If it had good development, why does this game get shit on when Elise kisses Sonic? I’ll tell you why, because the development between them was forced and of course underdeveloped. While the reason is there, in all of their scenes together they don’t really give a reason why Sonic he would dig a girl like Elise other than she’s a vulnerable girl who needs to open up. Which goes against his character HARD. And Elise while more reasonable doesn’t get enough scenes to make that feeling of closeness with Sonic turn romantic. It just doesn’t make sense why they love each other.
      Silver also has some good characteristics with a cool concept for an arc. He’s a naive boy who gains more knowledge about what has to be done to save his world. The problem is that his arc has him go from zero to a hundred A LOT. Like that scene where Silver was going to kill Sonic then Amy steps in and suddenly...he goes into a crisis about the needs of the many vs the needs of the few??? Again I get it but they didn’t give enough info or time to show significance on the words she said that made him go to that point. So it feels like it came out of nowhere. Which resolved almost immediately when Mephy just comes back and says kill him again. To make things worse, he pretty much never completes his arc in the end, as his solution pretty much backfires so hard he cries to mama Blaze to come solve his problems for him. A touching scene yes and could’ve worked if built upon properly but ALL OF HIS STORY WAS BUILT TOWARDS HIM BEING MORE EXPERIENCED AND LESS NAIVE. So it makes him look like a giant idiot who didn’t learn a damn thing.
      Shadow’s was the best story out of the three yes. But his arc still kinda sucks. Mostly because it’s delivered the same way OVER AND OVER AGAIN. So often that it becomes really boring and really predictable. Someone says something about the future about how humanity will turn on him. Shadow gets sad OH NOOO!!! Then someone says something nice I guess which calms Shadow down and makes him confident immediately no qualms about it. Rinse and repeat three more times and you get his entire arc. It might be about a slightly different subject, but it’s basically the same structure over and over. This is a problem all the stories have but it prevents Shadow’s story from being any good especially.
      So no dude, 06’s story sucks all the way through. It had some good sparknotes and Wikipedia articles but some subpar story. Also the reason SEGA doesn’t take notes from 06 is because the mainstream hates it so they want to distance themselves from 06 as possible.

    Unleashed also offloaded most of the platforming elements to the Werehog sections, which was basically 3D Collect-a-thon Mario meets My First God of War.

    I don't know if it was mentioned in the comments, but when you reach top speed in the Adventure games, Sonic became a lot harder to control.
    That's because he still had the same turning arc as when he's at his slower speeds.
    Which is also why SA2's Sonic stages were much more railroaded when you were meant to go fast, so you wouldn't accidentally go veering off a cliff.

      finally someone else says it, everyone talks about SA1 Sonic being excellent to control but I never see anyone (outside of one CZcams video) mention how Sonic at top speed feels incredibly slippery
      Sonic Team should try to reach a balance between Adventure and Boost movement, keeping Sonic able to turn easily at low speeds like in Adventure, but have him control more like the Boost games at top speeds
      Sounds like a nightmare to code honestly

    honestly I feel like Boost always worked better in 2D with the Rush games. Designing levels for Boost is easier when you're using tilesets instead of making huge 3D levels and since you're always going in one direction anyway losing that extra dimension doesn't really matter much. Plus the Tricks system added a more satisfying push and pull to boosting that isn't really replicated with Wisp capsules or rings.
