The funny thing is Wario actually did have what was once just a secondary aspect of his character become almost the entirety of the character when Smash Bros Brawl made Wario just a fart joke when his grosser aspects were supposed to be supplementary to his greed and the brute strength he’ll use to get his way. There’s unironically a bit of a parallel with Wario and Shadow with being a rival who became the internet’s stereotype of themselves

This may have been a video done in jest, but DAMN do the criticisms lobbed at Sonic at brute force look insanely hypocritical if the script was flipped and these were being launched at Mario. I like both franchises, I just became more into Sonic as time went by, but it really is unfair when Nintendo's golden boy gets a pass on something that Sonic would get made fun of relentlessly for.

@@r4ls3i7 Well to be fair there's mostly goofy alien laser guns, Eggman weapons made for his goofy smiling chub robots, and there's even a Billy Hatcher egg gun. Shadow's weapons weren't all edgelord real guns, only the GUN weapons were.
A lot of these things aren't that true for Mario. Saying ANY of Mario's 3D games have nearly as many bugs as Sonic's is wrong. Games like Mario is Missing, Mario's Time Machine, and Hotel Mario aren't developed by Nintendo, and have the same amount of relevancy as Sonic Schoolhouse. A lot of things he said were true to some level, but it was all exaggerated so that it could be compared to Sonic. Like, Mario fans don't say "the classic games" and "the dark Era" because the only truly bad Mario games released around the same time as the best ones, Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine releasing a little after Super Mario World.
@@Vulnresati The point of the video, albeit done jokingly, was to imagine if people were needlessly aggressive toward Mario the way they are when criticizing Sonic. Off the top of my head:
-If a Mario game came out that was borderline unplayable due to bugs and glitches, people would still be more forgiving of it than a Sonic game that has only one or two minor glitches.
-Mario gets praised for trying something that shakes up the formula but the second a Sonic game does the same thing even years before Nintendo does, it gets derided into oblivion because regardless of quality Sonic apparently isn't supposed to deviate from running loops and fighting the Death Egg Robot ever.
-I don't see anyone getting wrapped around the axle over Mario's change in design over the years but there are people still screaming bloody murder over Sonic's eye color.
-Imagine if someone said that Mario's cast of characters was better back when it was just Mario, Peach, and Bowser, that adding characters like Luigi, Daisy, Wario, Yoshi, Waluigi, Professor E. Gad, and Fawful was the detriment of the series and that they should never have become playable anywhere and needed to be removed from the franchise because they hold Mario back. You would look at them like they had their head screwed on backwards. So why, then, is "Sonic's stupid friends" legitimized by the general public with no pushback when this criticism would get you ostracized if you applied it to Mario?

Sunshine was the best 3D Mario. It took what SM 64 had and cleaned up all of the controls and graphics. The FLUDD expanded Mario's mobility even more.
Whenever someone complains about sunshine there is a very high likely hood that they are just trash at the game

At least Paramount's Mario movie was decent. They actually delayed the movie to fix Mario's design, and Jack Black's performance as Bowser was phenomenal. Only part I didn't like was when Mario flossed after defeating a Goomba. That was completely unnecessary. Other than that, I can't wait to see Luigi and Donkey Kong in the sequel. I am a bit concerned about Illumimation's Sonic movie though. The fact that Ryan Drummond is in the movie but he isn't playing Sonic makes absolutely no sense.

As someone who grew up with alot of the Sonic games most of them haven't aged well at all.The classic trilogy is still good,and some of the more modern 2D games are good to like rush adventure and mania.
As for the 3D games they were never really that great,Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 have aged very poorly most of the gameplay doesn't hold up.Sonic Heroes isn't fun,same with Shadow The Hedgehog,06,Sonic Unleashed etc.The only 3D games I like are Colors and Generations.The music is very good in the 3D games,but if it doesn't have good gameplay then it doesn't matter.Sorry it's how I feel I like Sonic as a character,but most of his games aren't fun im sorry :/

For me i enjoyed alot of the games 3d or not even though there not perfect like sa1 has janky cutscene and sa2 can have weird sound mixing at times for example but the flaws in the games are so minor or nitpicky that it doesn't away the fun for me if you compare games older or during the same time they kinda have the same problems other games do. My point is that a game can be good even if it has flaws or its not 10/10, people when revisit or try out Sonic games for the first time go in having a negative perspective or some kind of bias that's why people trying to get in to the franchise always have trouble enjoying it. Thats why critics are other people always say something toxic to say because they can't construct why they feel that way. At the end of the day everyone's aloud to have an opinion. If you weren't aloud to express yourself you're opinion wouldn't be any special than mine or Chaomix's, i just don't like the people who hate just to hate can't give a good reason why they feel that why. The paper Mario and sonic community’s has a surprising amount of parrels. Specifically the old stuff (dark age, classic, and the first three paper Mario games) vs new stuff (meta era and the new paper Mario games) and all the drama that follows this topics.
I know right? I watched Arlo talk about it and tried changing the sentences to Sonic and it fit like a glove. Incidentally, the only Mario games that I like are the RPGs so I'm out of luck either way lol.

Many series have went through a transition era where they give up the core to either adapt, appeal (Sonic), or be different for the sake of being different (Paper Mario)
Final Fantasy went through some major shifts, Zelda has went through some major shifts, and in turn the core elements people loved were lost which causes a divide.
It is normal when you abandon one thing for another while carrying the same name or identity.

It changed but didn’t feel worse then the stuff that came before it’s just different and now that people have gotten that different thing there wanting more of a mash of the two. I enjoyed the sonic meta era, I think it was a good idea to pull things back and be more simple with colors and generations. But then they did a lot of weird things like lost world and boom and forces was just disappointing. Mania was amazing though. I think it is normal and I do thinks series should change over time just look at Kirby people have wanted a 3D game forever and now we’re finally getting one. Hell most series has already gone through a change like this like games such as Mario 64 or ocarina of time

The dishonest gameplay is the most annoying thing to me. A lot of people say that SA1 and 2 are "full of glitches" and "have glitches everywhere". That and the "garbage controls and horrible camera".
All of that is objectively false. Yeah, if you mash the controller like a 2 years old baby, then surely you'll face some issues. Too bad the game was designed for people with higher IQ than the average 5 years old kid.

Which is the equivalent of criticizing Sonic 1 based on Sonic Genesis on GBA and saying that it was always a bad game, or doing the same thing with Colours Ultimate. It's disingenuous and shitty, the original games are not the problem and had different directors and teams behind them. Fucking shady as fuck these people.

But I will say, Paper Mario Colour Splash is the first good 3D Mario game, and they should continue with that direction instead of 64 & Sunshite.

Unironically, I'd rather replay any stage in Adventure 2 than in Mario 64. As much as I hate Death Chamber/Egg Quarters (And GOD do I hate them), 64 just doesn't have a lot going for it once you get all the stars.

I think part of Sonic Adventure 2's charm is replaying the stages and getting better and better, completing it in different ways.
While Mario 64 does have a speedrunning scene, M64 wasn't designed with that in mind, while SA2 was (and that's not even counting finding items for your chao).

Yeah, it seems that many people love to speak ill of Sonic. I doubt if they talk about Mario. Mario can have a game so buggy but so buggy, people don't even complain. If it was Sonic? A Sonic game can have quite a few bugs, and they say "Oh, this game is really bad...", "Oh, this game is rubbish..." (This is my opinion)

um ótimo exemplo disso foi o sonic forces, sim, o jogo foi decepcionante, mas alguns fãs diziam que o jogo era pior que o sonic 2006 e boom, o que eu acho um exagero (ao contrario desses 2 o forces ainda é jogavel) sem contar que alguns nem jogavam o jogo, só formavam suas opniões através de reviews que viam na internet
a great example of this was sonic forces, yes the game was disappointing, but some fans said the game was worse than sonic 2006 and boom, which I think is an exaggeration (unlike these 2 forces is still playable) and some of them didn't even play the game, they only formed their opinions through reviews they saw on the internet

It was so cool when Mario made it into Sonic Fighters Brawl but you can really tell he was a last minute rushed character as nearly his entire moveset is just punches and kicks instead of anything original. Fitting for a character who's games are rushed all the time as well.
Not to mention in the later games his moveset is still punches and kicks, and yet he is so annoying to play against as he is able to stall out opponents with his agility

So, in this alternate universe, Nintendo played around with motion controls, but it was Sega who made it mainstream. Huh.
The Cat Mario sections absolutely suck. His moveset is fine (I like the cat swipe/dive) but the way they force you to play as him in awkward platforming combat levels for over 30 minutes at a time when I just want to play a normal fun Mario level... that's probably why 3D World is my least favourite Mario. The Cat levels never end. I prefer the Wii/PS2 version where it was more tolerable. It also make Star Medal hunting optional and simplified the EXP system. You should never have to backtrack or grind in a Mario game
In fact, forcing irrelevant and inferior gameplay styles between standard Mario platforming has been a recurring issue in these games. There was the boring Fluzzard hanggliding section (which you can beat without touching the controller) in Galaxy, the blue-coin hunting levels in Sunshine (with a broken radar) and even the 2D retro pipe sections in Odyssey were less fun than the 3D gameplay.
Even that one Mario fangame (the one everyone hates) had sections like these. It's so frustrating!
Why can't Nintendo just make a good Mario game that isn't bogged down with filler? 3D Land (and its remake, 3D Land Ultimate) got this right, so why can't Odyssey?
New Super Mario Bros was a landmark though but it seems like they went back to making mediocre 3d mario games. Mario Origins making me hopeful though

NSMB was a total return to form, I agree. But you're kidding yourself if you think Mario Origins is anything but a straight port of Super Mario All-Stars. Its cool that they're including Mario 3 (which wasn't on NES Online because Madonna composed the World 3 theme uncredited and Nintendo doesn't have the rights), but a collection game isn't gonna be the same as a brand new game.

When we FINALLY got the first REAL 2D Mario ever since Mario World with New Super Mario Bros Wii, it lacked the charm and soul that made the originals so great. The physics were garbage, the level aesthetics are soulless plastic copies of previous levels from the classics, and why does Mario need all these new moves now??? If they REALLY wanted to go back to basics, they should've kept it at jumping and throwing fireballs. These new moves streamline the level design into complete monotony and boredom.

SoA was actually strict with fan games back when they still had the San Francisco office building, they only accepted fangames when the team was shrunked and they became less corporate. Because it is, in fact, a rushed mess of a game. No sarcasm or jokes here, Sunshine is a glitchy mess with one of the worst level structures I've ever seen. If you don't get 49 specific Shines, then you simply can't finish the game. Get stuck on even ONE of those 49? No final level for you! Why even HAVE Shine Sprites if your total is completely irrelevant to doing the endgame?! None of the other 3D Marios, not even 3D Land/World, bottleneck you so hard, and with so many shoddy gimmick levels. No-Fludd stages where the terrible way Mario's air control works becomes more of a struggle than any of the game's pathetic bosses, races involving either Bloopers or El Piantissimo where death is the consequence for the smallest of failures, the weird swimming sections in Noki Bay, and my personal decade-long roadblock, "Scrubbing Sirena Beach", AKA "Difficulty by Region" with a side order of "these controls were NOT designed for this"!
Honestly, I would rather play Sonic 06. At least hardly anyone tries to pretend that game is anything more than what it is.

Sonic has always had a story. S3k's is actually pretty epic for a 16 bit platformer. Most of the criticisms Ive seen have been more about the quality of the storytelling being a bit lacking in recent years. I don't think people wanting a game thats well made and isnt really janky means they want there to be no story.

When Miyamoto was asked about stories in Mario games, specially about the lack of story in Super Mario Galaxy 2, he said, “Well, I put a stop to that at the beginning this time.” And I can’t say how happy I was when he said that. FINALLY Nintendo was listening to what game journalists had to say on this. Mario games should NOT have story in them. I hate story. It’s annoying when they show me cutscenes and have me read text dialogue. It’s so confusing, it makes me think I’m watching a movie or reading a book?? When I thought I was playing VIDEO GAME. I don’t want to know about Mario and his friends and their thoughts and feelings and the world they live in, I want to JUMP and HIT BLOCKS. It’s about time Nintendo listened to the valid criticism that these “games” should not be interrupted by ANY type of story telling at all. I mean these are CHILDREN’S games, and children hate stories and characters.
By the way, before any of you CRINGE Mario fans say anything, yes, I do think the same goes for the Paper Mario spin off series. Just because the game was originally called “Mario Story” doesn’t mean it should actually have story in it. I don’t want to read text dialogue that builds the world around Mario and the people who live in that world, I just want Mario to be two dimensional and jump and hit blocks with NO purpose and none of these “partners” or dumb NPCs. I HATE reading too. Like what is this an RPG? Mario is a PLATFORMER, NOT an RPG. And in terms of tone, by the third game it was just getting completely out of hand. Why is Luigi evil? Why is an evil clown committing murder suicide on Luigi? Why is an apocalypse happening? What is even HAPPENING anymore? This was just getting CRAZY. So glad they eventually returned to their roots with that series and just made the gameplay extremely simple and got rid of any story.

Sonic 64, The 1st fully 3D Sonic game for the Sega 64 sold over 11 millions copies , but Maraio Adventure, Mario's 1st 3D game for the Nintendo Dreamcast only sold over 2,5 millions copies. I Wish Mario was as popular as Sonic just like the early 90's.
