It's kind of like how Spider-Man's costume was originally supposed red and black, but when being drawn was shaded using blue tones, making everyone think it was actually dark blue and how that later on became the standard suit colors. It's especially funny because this not only happened to the original Peter Parker suit, but happened again with Miguel O'Hara's suit.
Something that you didn't mention about Majin is the fact that the Easter Egg itself wasn't intentionally made to be creepy or disturbing in the first place. It was supposed to be a goofy/silly little Easter Egg made by Nishimura to whoever stumbled upon it. This can somewhat be justified from the fact that in the JP version of the soundtrack,the boss theme used is more cheery and upbeat comparing to the US version. Speaking of the US Soundtrack,that caused Majin to take a turn from being a simple joke-art into a creepy,unsettling figure with Sonic's physical appearance and a human-like face. Don't know why the Sonic CD US Soundtrack team did this,but it sure gave people nightmares in the past.

I used to interpret the dark spots as a mustache, but recent events have had me thinking about it more and eventually changing my mind. Sonic the Hedgehog media getting things incorrect due to misinterpretation and muddling what is "canon" or not has been a stable to the series, so let us continue to debate about it until the end of time.
The real question is what if they put Majin Sonic back in a Sonic game, what would he look like

@@Ben7892 No, he has a point. A lot of people back in the day (and still do today) took the direct translation of "Majin" literally. Sega would be doing the funny looking Sonic and the fandom an injustice if they didn't take a spooky angle when adding him to a game (if they ever do).

I think it was originally intended to be shading but it was reinterpreted as a mustache, which I prefer. I'm glad the mustache is the official design now since it's more visually appealing.

I honestly think it's up to how you interpret Majin's design. I honestly think he doesn't have any mustaches, but I still respect the people that do.
I think that, well, it was literally revealed by Word of God by Majin himself. You can still interpret it as a moustache, but you'll also be, well, wrong.
Your depiction of Majin Sonic is both faithful and appealing. Thanks. In addition, the music on this bonus screen is supposed to be played with the JPN boss music. This screen is supposed to be playful, but the difference in soundtracks between regions makes this screen unintentionally scary for NA Sonic fans. On top of that, the word "majin" is what people have interpreted as "the Devil" in Japanese, adding to the overall creepiness along with the NA boss music and the text saying "Infinite Fun". You can thank Cybershell's "Sonic CD Secrets" for figuring that out.
Thanks! It plays the US boss theme music if you’re playing the US version. And I always thought the US version was the scarier of the two. Honestly, in general the US soundtrack is a lot more creepy. Two completely different vibes and I appreciate both.
One thing I always found weird was how Majin Sonic's quills stick up in a similar manner to the Toei/Junio Sonic design. I still wonder whether that was intentional or not.
Maybe so the head quills wouldn’t fall onto the back and cover it.
I always took it as a mustache. It never occurred to me that it could be shading on the cheekbones. I always took the whole face a some kind of creepy mask. Sonic is wearing a mask, since his eyes and nose do not look like that normally. Furthermore, if he is wearing a mask, it would explain the mustache, since it is/could be part of the mask itself (like the classic prank glasses nose and mustache).
However, we now have irrefutable proof from the man who created the image, and it is confirmed to be cheekbone shadow. This means that it is not Sonic, or even Sonic wearing a mask. It is a creature with Sonic's shape and features, but with a hideous and grotesque face. It is something trying to look like Sonic. Notice the lack of ears, too. This honestly makes the "Fun is Infinite" image that much creepier, given that it is not Sonic wearing a mask, but rather a creature that isn't Sonic at all...
If you look at the new official art, you can see classic sonics light blue body opposed to the dark blue of the Majin sonic face. That's what's making me think its just a mask that sonic is wearing, and is using it to scare tails. That's why knuckles is laughing and Amy is not freaking the fuck out over this weird sonic creature. It's cus its just a mask

No mustache makes his cheekbones so much more distinct and makes him more unsettling imo
i personally think even if it was a cheekbone shadow that they should keep it as a mustache. not cause it looks better but that black coloring is iconic to majins face and i think it should remain. making every drawing of sonic a majin version means making sure the ligt is always above him which can limit the creativity behind any official drawing that could come out of him. I think its better to make it a mustache to keep that iconic extra detail to his face
Not always you can make lighting different on certain objects if you do it right
I discovered this as a six year old. I was in a hotel room alone at night while my parents were out. They got Sonic Cd and Centipede for me so I would not be bored. The game was already really creepy to me. Somthing about the way the music loops and for sure the boss music.
When I found this thanks to GameFAQ I had no idea what I was getting into. I couldn't turn it off and I balled my eyes out.

ngl, the mustache makes majin sonic look better than in the original sprite, and for me the majin sonic without mustache and only with his cheeksbones shadow it looks pretty weird, i know that is not a mustache, but i like how the mustache make him look, and it looks kinda like the wario mustache (aleast in my opinión).
I don’t think it was meant to be a mustache but I think art of Majin Sonic looks weird without a mustache. Like the face feels a bit too empty for lack of a better description.
I feel the same way, maybe the shading just isn't dark enough on many of those HD depictions.

I always thought it was a mustache. I can get how it's shading of the cheek bones, but the harshness shown is a bit much. The shading in the eyes makes more sense cause the brows point out more than the folds of the mouth. Another thing I'd like to point out is the color difference between the top half of his face and the bottom half of his face. They're two different shades, making it seem like the mustache is thick enough to block lighting from reaching the rest of his face.
Also, another reason I was on this idea was because this whole Easter egg is supposed to be a jab at Nintendo and Mario, and, since the whole thing came off as creepy rather than a joke, there was speculation that Majin Sonic is Sonic with Mario's face. I don't think I need to explain further on that.
However, since it seems that Majin wasn't forgotten, if he is depicted with a mustache now, I think I prefer that over the shading. Majin with a mustache just makes sense to me.

I'm 100% convinced that's a mustache
while i initially viewed it as no-moustache, looking at it closer i think it's more likely to be moustache. the main thing is i think some of the shading would be too uniform and dark compared to how appropriately varied the depth of shading is on the rest of the piece. And then you add the seeming jab at Mario, AND this recent confirmation and it just adds on to that.

I personally think, due to the skin tones being different on the upper head compared to the rest of the body, that Majin Sonic is a human wearing a mask, explaining his strangely humanlike jaw and several other strange proportions.

also: in case you didn't know, i think the Majin sonic Easter egg was never meant to be all that spooky.
Sonic CD was originally released in japan with the Japanese OST where they used the far more upbeat and cheerful Japanese boss theme, but then when it later came out in the US, the new OST came along with it wich had a much scarier sounding boss theme (sorry if i got anything wrong)

I was used to think it was shadow, but I could see it as a moustache too after learning of the debate (although I much preferred the shadow interpretation). Once I was at beginning half of the video and saw the raw sprite over a white background I thought it might be a mustache afteral which I did not like as much. But after your analysing I’m completely back to the shadow side lol.
Plus you can even see the distinction within the shadow there are parts darker right below the nose and parts right below the cheekbone with some slightly lighter pixels to seperate them and show the shape of the smile.
It's been 28 years. He just grew one in that time. calm down, y'all.

Always looked like a mustache to me; even after you pointed out how it could be shading, I couldn't see it. The biggest support for him having a mustache in my opinion is the bundle of lighter blue pixels above his top lip, which serve as its highlights.
Not to mention the face looks a lot like the Anonymous mask, which *does* have a mustache, and I'm not saying they were inspired by it, but it's a bit hard to not see a mustache once you've made that connection in your head lol
As an artist, its 100% cheek bones
Underneath where the "mustache" would lie you can see a thin line going down the side of his face stretched under the cheek bones and fat, this is the perforation of his mouth from the wide smile, his lips making a crease against his cheek essentially. You can also see that the "mustache" just so happens to end at the edge of his cheek, it doesn't go off even a pixel, it's def his cheek bones
Honestly, the new artwork's majin sonic is just classic sonic wearing a mask!

Another fun fact about Majin Sonic:
His face is actually based on Masato himself, as he has an affinity to hiding his face in the video games he helps work on. (Such as in shenmue, seen in his picture in this very video.)
For a relative comparison, Totaka hides his now famous 17 note medley in the games he composes music for such as Animal Crossing.
