      You guys uh... Remember what happened with Colors right? Did you just forget that? _Especially_ the Switch part... If you didn't know, that's pretty much the Sonic standard for ports lol. In fact they were always _abominable_ with their ports, look at what they did to the Adventure games. And the Colors Ultimate fiasco will ensure they wont do ports for a while yet, they react very strongly to harsh reception (even though they definitely know for a fact it's because they produce rushed shit that the games are bad, not the concept). I doubt we'll get Unleashed Ultimate, and that's the good ending because if we _do_ get an Unleashed """remaster""" port thing it will be absolutely fucking horrible and will negatively stain the game forever (even more than it already has been) just like what happened with the other games they ruined. People getting into the series or just playing it to shit on it _to this day_ go to SADX for the basic SA1 experience because Sega made that the widely available standard. That's what happens when they "port" something, they tarnish it. Literally just wait for a fan PC port, it will probably happen eventually. You are 100% better off waiting for a fan port than an official one at this point, that is the state of Sonic lol. It will be an infinitely better product. Or just play Unleashed Project or something.

      If SEGA refuses to remake the Adventure games, they most certainly wouldn’t bother porting this game. Almost every game after Sonic 3k until Sonic 4 is is either in the yellow or red on Metacritic. Sonic Team has expressed their interest in remastering and remaking more games, but SEGA’s response to it is always “f*** the fans!” This is why I keep saying that we will never get multiple playable characters, compelling stories, or anything that touches the adventure/dark era games. I want it to happen, I really do! But, it just won’t happen.

    I've thought of two ways they could correct the medal issue if Sonic Unleashed ever got a remaster.
    1.) The Sun and Moon medal requirement would be cut significantly, at the very least half of what it is. Doing some research I found the minimum medal requirement to beat the game is 120 Sun medals and 80 Moon medals, so cut that to 60 and 40 respectively.
    2.) No Sun and Moon medals are needed to complete the main game, however, they now exclusively unlock the optional bonus acts. This could also be how you unlock the DLC stages in this hypothetical remaster.

    Personally, I'd love to see a Sonic Unleashed "Ultimate" on PS5 and XBX with 4K resolution and 60fps (similar to the recent patch for Xbox). As long as they don't make the same missteps they did with Colors Ultimate, I think this game could be a great opportunity to leverage some of the positive reception the game has enjoyed over the past few years, and also correct a few of these small issues. Even just decreasing the amount of medals needed for progression would at least be a step in the right direction, and they could probably make a few other tweaks like clarifying Werehog combos (which are a fun way to play the character, but not exactly emphasized by the game itself) or a universal slight decrease to enemy health bars. Anway, great video chaomix!

    As someone who has only played the Wii. Ver (but has seen playthroughs of the HD ver.), I can agree that the medal collecting does have flaws in some areas, and shouldn’t have been handled to the point of locking story progression, it really does hold the game back in terms of its true potential. The collecting would’ve been more worthwhile if it was handled like the Wii ver, where the player would be rewarded for collecting them, by accessing rooms with unique platforming challenges, that allows the player to get the collectibles seen in game. Not to say that the Wii. Ver is superior as both have their respective high points and low points.

    I dunno, when I first played Unleashed HD I found the Medals fairly easy to find, usually along the more difficult pathways for Sonic to take, and since the Werehog is a 3D slower paced beat’em up, exploring around didn’t seem that much of a difficult thing to do. Never came across a single medal check I couldn’t cross. Although to be fair I also was bothering to try to do the additional acts and not just the bare minimum to get to the end. Maybe if they did something like you can’t fly to the next area unless you get enough medals from your current region. Kinda like SM Odyssey.
    I was one of the people that played Wii Unleashed first, at launch and that definitely was a better experience in the medals aspects too I think. Simply being get good at the levels, the more medals you get and collectibles being on secret routes was a good idea.
    I think ultimately it comes down to Sonic’s greatest strength and weakness, being marketed focus on speed above all else. Should any mechanic/gimmick or focus be added that slows that down, it’s going to be initially met with vitriol, warranted or not, which leads to overaggressive attacks and over-defensive responses.
    I think what another good fix could without changing too much, for Day Stages, Moon medals are tied to rank, Sun medals unlock other day stage acts for that continent and for Night Stages, Day medals - rank, Night medals, more stages for that act. And story progression requirement is based on the expectation that most players won’t bother with the additional acts (so the required numbers of medals are lowered). So the players who just want to race through the game can do so while gaining proficiency in stages, and the players who take time to explore the game are rewarded with more stages to play

Maybe it’s because I enjoyed exploring every nook and cranny for collectibles in the werehog stages and was skilled enough to choose pathways that allowed me to nab the medals in the regular speed stages. But I understand if others may find it frustrating in how it takes away from the core gameplay. Nonetheless, I really wish this does get a port and I am so happy that it’s getting all this love nowadays, it truly is a great sonic game.

    Medal Collecting thankfully never annoyed me cause for some reason I already knew the spot of like every medal at the age of 7, but I can definitely see that the game would be a much more objectively good game if it wasn’t locked under a bogus progression system. I would love to see this game re-released with elements taken from both versions of the HD and Wii versions. Say take the levels, hub worlds, and presentation of the HD version while adding in the medal collecting from the Wii version. Would be really nice to see the Wii version stages added in as extra stages that u could unlock with the more medals you collect?? Idk, just a though.

    Sonic Unleashed is such a great game, even to this day in 2021 since it's release. Among all Sonic games I played in my life, Sonic Unleashed is the game that held my attention. The soundtrack is great, the diversity in stages and a new addition : the werehog. Unlike some people, I personally enjoyed the Werehog part of the game, all this fight while trying to make the greatest combo you could do. The music triggered each time is not that bad, it's just overused each time you end on Dark Gaia minions. Day stages are a masterpiece, mythical environments while enjoying the soundtrack. An other point, I really liked that MMORPG aspect with levels in order your character stats, it seemed like a progression while going throughout the scenario.
    And final point : Medals collectibles. Medals are one of the most "hated" things in Sonic Unleashed, it seems. In my opinion, collecting medals is challenging even if by lived experience, I've been stuck with 14 sun medals missing in order to access to Jungle Joyride day stage. It would need some global overhaul such as letting you to start what I call "New Game +" (Like in a game called Driver San Francisco) so you can keep all medals and you're not restricted while progressing throughout the whole game.
    Who knows ? Unleashed could be back on the scene someday after that recent 60 fps patch on Xbox Series X. For those who don't necessarily own an Xbox console and more a PC or a PlayStation 3.

  • @startijer

    now i have a lot of ideas to improve the HD version's medal collecting. it could do what the wii version did, getting day medals for skilled speedy play in the daytime levels, and in the night stages, you could get 1 night medal by default for beating the level, and get two extras for fulfilling a certain requirement, like hitting a high combo, taking only X amount of hits/deaths, ect. Then, add a few extra medals for night and day across the hubworlds. there are 174 in the wii version, add 25 medals spread across the hub worlds, and you can get certain ones depending on the time in game. I think this could fix it a lot. And just untie them from progression in general, use them to unlock challenges, bonus quests/levels, and artsie dev stuff. Another thing i have heard criticism about is the length and monotony of the night levels, just make them shorter and less tedious. I feel like if somebody really took the time, they could make something absolutely amazing out of this torn apart game. it has the potential for sure.

    My suggestion would be:
    1. Lower the amount of medals in total. (By about 30%)
    2. Lower the progression requirements. (By at least 60%)
    3. Lower the medals in action stages. (Half it on day stages and reduce it by 25% on night stages)
    4. double the hub world medals.
    I personally tend to sidequest, so medals aren't as much of a problem for me as it is for more linear players. But even for me, progression has been halted.

  • @iranoutofideasforausernam1703

    I'm actually really fond of the Team Chaotix levels in Sonic Heroes. It's been a while since I last played, so I could be misremembering, but the stages are rearranged slightly to encourage exploration more, most collectibles have more than you need (at least for the normal missions; the extra missions aren't necessary to beat the game), and not all missions are even collection-based (though the vast majority are).
    For me, the Team Chaotix missions felt like a solid change of pace, and the Werehog already does that more than well enough in Unleashed; while I've only played the Wii port, the PS3/360 medals seem less like playing Team Chaotix's stages and more like having to do their collection playstyle for every stage on every route, at least from what I've heard.
    Maybe I'll give that version a look if it gets ported to Steam or Switch, or if I can find the 360 version for cheap.

    That said, even I think that the medal collecting would be much improved by making them optional (since the story purpose is that they somehow represent increasing Chip's power to allow him to unlock stages, which is pretty much unnecessary to the plot and can be gotten rid of without any problem), if it was for unlocking optional challenge stages or purchasing cosmetics.

Red Star Rings are actual mini challenges in the stage themselves that at least force the player to give some thought in what they should do to get them.

    I may have an unpopular opinion, but I think the medal collecting was fine. Since I already like to look around. Usually you can find most in the hub worlds, or the worlds where you look for the next level to do. For me they were easy to find, like I said I loved exploring the game. Yeah sure, the game is meant to go fast, but last time I remember playing, (because I was scared of the enemies lol) I would go slow and explore to avoid them, causing me to find a lot of medals before even knowing I had to for something. The only roadblock I had was with Eggman land because I didn’t have enough for them. After I beat all the stages I started perfecting them, and collecting and finding all the Easter eggs. Sonic Unleashed is 9.5/10 game and medal collecting is why for a lot of people. But..
    Is anyone gonna talk about the ranking system and how stupid tight it is? No? No one?

    I think there's a perfect version of Sonic Unleashed out there we never got.
    A version with the Wii medal collecting system and gaia gates. The 360 hubs and nighttime gameplay. The 1st half of the dark gaia fight in the Wii version, and the 2nd half of the 360 version. The 360 controls with the Wii drift, and the 360 Eggmanland but split into a day and night stage.
    If that version of Unleashed existed, critics would hail this one of the best Sonic games.

    This medal collecting reminds me of Sonic Advance 2. It also goes against everything Sonic is known for where you collect SP Rings to go and collect Chaos Emeralds. Probably worse cuz it's a 2D game with a screen crop (Pretty ironic too, since it's also the game that encourages you to go super fast). I completed it once, and never again.

    Honestly never understood the issue with medal hunting I can only recall one time where I had my progression halted and that was on my first playthrough I didn't have enough medals to get to jungle joyride day. You get more than enough medals to proceed during the night stages where the levels are slower paced and have more exploration.
    The day stage medals on the most part aren't even that out of the way most are found on shortcuts throughout the level

    • @jerryalexis576
      @jerryalexis576 Před 2 lety +1

      This is exactly what I think about it. I got halted only once and it took me less than 20 minutes and a short night level to get what I need. And the medals for day levels are found on shortcuts, it can become a matter of skill.

    @eljoumisaul5188 Před 2 lety

    They could remaster Unleashed, and implementing multiple save states, and then when you start a new game, you can choose if the medal collecting it’s gonna be like the Wii or HD version, or there could be a mode where there aren’t 200 sun and moon medals each, just 100 or something

  • @speedberry1
    @speedberry1 Před 2 lety +1

    I think that the best way to handle medal collection would have been to change how they were placed in the day stages. Rather than being hidden off the main path, they should have been rewarded for taking faster routes and doing tricks. Reward the player for their skill rather than make them go out of the way to find them. Personally, I think the Werehog stages were fine in terms of collection as they were slow-paced already, and the medals usually weren't that egregious to collect. That's my 2 cents anyways.

    Medal Collecting and the Werehog destroyed my first "Playthrough" (stopped at Eggman Land)
    After this huge "Unleashed Hype" i did gave the Game a second Chance
    (I got from Hating it more than Forces to actually like and completing it)
    The most frustration i got from the Werehog was, that [without the Level ups] it sucked more than Big in SA1 (out of place, slow and frustrating)
    The Medals just made it worse
    I think, the game would realy benefit from just give you a better Werehog from the start on (no seriusly, i barrely got better, but the stats helped me enjoying it more) and just lower the Medals youre requiered to progress
    Im also not a big Fan of Quicktime-Events which didnt helped either on my first "Playthrough", i got the hang of it, but i still dont like them (the main reason i lost lives, besides the two Titans on the Skyscrapper stage)
    I also wouldnt prais Eggman Land
    (Most Deaths i got came from balencing the Werehog and Quicktime-Events)
    Thankfully the Gamedesigners knew Eggman Land sucked (they put 1ups everywhere)

    (you don't have to get all 400 medals to beat the game, they unlock 1 level that lets you continue with the game but the requirement isn't 400. That's why I don't have all of them)
    Also when I first played I wouldn't call myself a big sonic fan.

I think that the right balance for medal collecting would be maybe to remove completely or in part medals from the day stages, to allow the players to fully enjoy the speed of the levels. For the night stages, I think medals are needed, because at night everything is slowed down, so exploring is perfect in this levels. Medals during the night make the players want to explore more in order to succeed. For the last thing I would make the medals to be used for unlocking only the night and extra stages.

    I think the Mario comparrison mostly stems from the non collectithon games like New Super Mario Bros, 3D Land and 3D World, where the objective is to get from point a to b but the Star coins, Green stars, etc are still required for progression however the big difference is in those games the collectibles are placed in plain sight in very easy to memorise spots and usually in paths you'd be taking anyways and the amount needed for progression is far less strict than Unleashed.

    I think a relatively easy fix would be cut the amount of metals in half, maybe even quarter the amount, and relegate all of them to the werehog levels. If not that, then maybe slap a few into some shortcut side paths in the day missions so they’re kind of like a reward for each. The werehog missions would reward you for finding them by exploring, and the day missions would reward you for finding them, along with finding the quickest route through the level

  • @loziclec.1295
    @loziclec.1295 Před 2 lety +3

    A closer comparison to the medals would be the green stars in Super Mario 3D World. There are multiple in each level, they're often hidden, and they're required for progression. The biggest difference being that getting green stars is tied to doing the most fun things in Mario games: exploring and tough platforming. The medals in Unleashed are usually tucked behind corners or in obscure parts of the levels. They should have been used to encourage playing the game in the most fun way possible. It doesn't even have to be exactly like the Wii version. If most of them had been placed in upper paths and shortcuts, they could have been used to teach players how to get the most out of the levels.
    Sonic's had a lot of different methods to encourage replaying levels: Chaos Emeralds, multiple playable characters, Chao, the ranking system, branching story paths, leveling Sonic up, materials for boats, Wisp powers, red rings, Avatar missions, and so on. The medals in Sonic Unleashed, as they are in the Xbox and PlayStation versions, are easily the worst method they've done (and leveling Sonic up in Secret Rings was pretty bad).
