Dragon Mountain Review Marineland Bizarre Arrow Looping Coaster

- This is the worlds largest coaster in terms of how much land it takes up- it is absolutely MASSIVE! That being said, the ride itself mostly made up of straight sections with an occasional helix on loop thrown in. It is WEIRD!

The double dipping helix was supposed to be a volcano with 2 dragons in it that you circle..the large weird flat section after that was supposed to be a replica of Niagara Falls that the train went out over slowly..that's why there are strange long sections that are slow and make little sense without the themeing
shawn OKEEfe What do you mean “supposed to be”? Was the ride never finished? Or has it been partially disassembled?
The ride is "technically" not finished because they were supposed to have added these themed elements to the ride. A while back (2006), Marineland stated that they would finish theming of the ride, but it looks like it hasn't even happened. Can't say why they didn't do it back in 1983
KarnageKamikaze I can’t decide whether that’s more sad or funny.
They did finally stucco the volcano portion..for years it was an open honeycomb of steel girders
shawn OKEEfe So strange. You’d think they wouldn’t open the ride in the first place if they weren’t ready to open it.
It's like one of those insanely long coaster that you would see in a planet coaster video.
Keep in mind back when this ride was built Arrow was the only company building big looping coasters. Dragon Mountain opened 5 years before Shockwave at SFGAm and 8 years before Steel Phanton at Kennywood. Dragon Mountain is an interesting slice of history that is hard to find nowadays.
Ever heard of Togo, Schwarzkopf and Vekoma? They were making looping coasters around that time
For me, I classify this coaster under a bizzare category: Looping Mine Train. Think about it: Take out the inversions, and you basically get a mine train coaster. Not many big drops, a lot of curves, and many straight sections, just like a mine train coaster.
Also true fact: The straight section at 2:56 was planned to have a replica of Niagara Falls you passed by ( yes, really), but the budget for this ride went overboard, so they scrapped it.
Oakview Films it hauls ass in the tunnel before the final inversions..that's best part of ride
I've heard Hersheypark's sooperdooperLooper described as a looping Mine Train.
I've never been on a mine train coaster. Are they all this boring? I'll pass.
I remember when this ride opened. I'm glad they ran out of money. The REAL Niagara Falls are 1/2 a mile away and you're building a replica? Clueless.
@shawn OKEEfe - Are we talkin' about the same ride? My take was that the train sloooowly builds up just.. . enough.. . speed in the tunnel to keep from stalling out in the final loops.
Long story short, this park will go out of business because this ride is a giant flop. If they can manage to fix it, Marineland MIGHT survive. Otherwise, sell the whales and lock the gates.
Interesting the quirks of this particular ride characterize Marineland in general. Long sections of scenery that should have more in them, spread out over a huge area but long gaps between features, fantastic setting but not really living up to its potential. Honestly if a budget shows up for this ride giving it some Morgan love ala Steel Phantom would probably result in one of the best terrain steels ever built.
hey prof pic twin :D i havent found one in years
@@mubasshiralam2519 Huh?? Was that English?
@@detroitdiezel7856 they were mentioning that they have the same profile picture
I believe this is the point where Arrow switched to CAD, in the form of Rollercoaster Tycoon 3
This is up there with the original Steel Phantom as perhaps the strangest Arrow coaster produced. Hopefully it will still be around when I finally make it up there.
An RCT#3 coaster!
On a mountain!
Not sure I agree with the Beast comparison (the Beast does wander a bit, but it has plenty of intense moments too), but it certainly does look like a weird coaster. Arrow must have had an RCT moment, or maybe Marineland said “build us the ‘world’s largest roller coaster’ on the cheap” and that’s what they got.
😂😂 2:22
Dragon Mountain's chain lift is so slow it's like it was brought straight from Japan. Not to mention the wierd ass jet coaster esque layout.
I stopped riding Fujiyama literally because the lift hill gave me such bad anxiety it took so long. Always made me think the thing was just gonna stop.
I'm from the Niagara area, and I've heard that the guy who created Marineland bought so much land to make a huge park, but he ran out of money before he could put more rides in there. (Only like 15% of the actual land of the park is even used I think.)
I also heard that around the time he ran out of money, he was planning to add a bunch of cool theming to this ride so that you were looking at a dragon at the slower "helix" part and Niagara Falls at the "straight" part. The ride is incomplete, and that's why it's weird.
So yeah...
You never forget about a ride like Dragon Mountain.
Yea see my reply above about that. The land ML sits on is like 3x the size of Wonderland. If Six Flags wanted to compete truly with Wonderland it could kill Darien Lake move the rides over and have one of the largest theme parks in the world if it bought the land.
@@icalexander the thing about wonderland is that there is no competition around. The closest true amusement park is darien lake and that's like 3 hours and a different country away
@@stfjinkiojd I get that. I'm simply pointing out an obvious avenue. Close Darien lake and move the rides over to where Marineland is now. You'd also have tons of expansion room and some already world record rides like sky screamer.
@@icalexander that would be a good idea but its not something i see six flags doing, especially when considering the costs of moving a large amusement park into a different country
You should make a video naming every credit you have gotten.
Lucas Record geez that'd be a long video
Coaster Studios Can you do just the new ones for 2017?
No way it would take way too long
What I love about this ride is that you go to the tunnel then increase speed and then suddenly go upside down already
Always get HYPEDDD for a coaster studios video!!! Never been disappointed and the tradition is still carried on!!!
I wish the park was cheaper, so I could include in my trip and do it in a day with Fantasy Island.
nah, if yo u had to pick a canada amusment park, go to canada's wonderland
This was my first major coster if your a 7 year old and it's your first coster with inversion it's the best memory ever. Every time. Get on a arrow looper i get flash back memories of this coster. Btw it is a weired coaster I think they were trying to make it a family ride because Marineland is a huge famliy park.
Joe Flinn Ah yep, this was my childhood coaster too. Learned to ride on this thing, learned to keep my eyes open through the inversions... on quiet days the bored staff would just let us stay on and go round and round (no lines). I’m over 40 now and it wasn’t a new coaster when I was little... and from this video it hasn’t changed at all! Only part not good for the timid is the long slow lift hill really: too much time to psyche yourself out (though nothing you could do about it of course).
Me two but i didn't know there were any inversions as my parents told me there were none, so that i wouldn't be scared of them anymore. I was so scared when it rounded the corner and saw the loops.
I love this ride! The last tunnel before you hit the bowtie is batshat crazy intense. Favorite arrow looper!
I was the person at Cedar Point that asked you about Marineland and Dragon Mountain.
This was my first "big" steel coaster in the early 90s. I used to be scared of the ride, not because of the coaster itself, but i was afraid of the cave queue.
Probably one of my favorite things of this ride is the car theming
Yay!I have been waiting for a review for forever you should keep on making reviews I love them : )
I loved this ride when I was a kid. And I definitely remember doing a marathon on it because of the line being so short.
Its got two chainlifts just like steel dragon 2000
Wat...
he doesnt mean two lift hills, its one lift hill , halfway up the first chain ends and another starts
luke puked that's what i said I didn't say lift hill there is two chains
yeah that was in reference to "wat.." lol
Beast vs. Dragon Mountain!
I really enjoyed this coaster when I visited Niagara falls as a teenager. I think this was the best of the large arrow custom loopers
lol I was watching a pov of Dragon Mountain right when I got this notification 😆
Also before I watched the pov I watched your video on Marineland :D
We call that last one the pretzel around here. I think the Viper at Darien lake has a similar loop in it they're similar in age so it wouldnt surprise me of they had similar concepts used in the inversions
This was my first ever inverting roller coaster! As a kid I thought it was amazing and I'm glad that it got me into the hobby. Definitely not as good as I remembered it being in the slightest!
Jake sent me here. Rad video. I always wanted to go here but Canada will no longer allow me to cross without serving my sentance there. Marineland ain't worth 6 years lol.
I first rode this when it first opened in 1983 and the landscape all around course was barren with no trees and the spiral was just an open framework holding up the track. A lot has changed today.
I agree. The ride looks like it needs some new wheels. Great Review.
WOW...I've never heard of this ride and definitely didn't know of an Arrow looper that's similar to the beast...pretty cool if you ask me!
The shuffling is due to small gaps where the wheel meets the rail due to Arrows all being manually welded together on site they couldn't get the everything to perfectly line up like on modern coasters. All Arrows do this (it's what creates the roughness) it just that due to how slow this one is going you notice it more.
Came here from Bright Sun Film's "North America's Worst Theme Park". This ride feels like if you were given a chance to ride an abandoned roller coaster for one last time, this would be it.
I’ve been on dragon mountain and it’s amazing
Have not been to this theme park or rode the Dragon Mountian coaster in maybe 30 years. As a kid it was one of my favorite coasters and I appreciated the long straight away sections after being upside down. I'm glad its still in operation. Sadly it is too bad that the theme elements were never completed.
This is essentially Steel Beast
Stopped watching Coaster Bots live stream for this!
1T4Cproductions hey me too
1T4Cproductions sameeeee
1T4Cproductions haha, yeah.!...
People actually watch Harry's streams? xD
Disappointed :(
Dragon Mountain Parody?
Garrett yep
@@idkwhatiamdoing1188 It came out today haha
I agree with you! It looks weirdly cool!
Keep the reviews coming
When I was there it didn’t make the full loop lol it was closed for the day
I read in another CZcams comment that the weird straight sections were supposed to have killer theming, but the owner of the park wasted all the funds buying too much land
the coaster was supposed to have tons of theming, a replica of the falls, the helix being enclosed with dragons in the center and a fire effect that was supposed to chase the train up the pretzel at the end. John Holer ran out of money and it was never completed the way he wanted. Sad really because I've seen some drawings for the concept and it looks amazing
This was the first roller coaster I went on that had inversions, went on it about a dozen times in one day.
I rode this when this opened in 1983 and the landscape back then was desolate and barren and spiral was supported in a girder framework.
This thing looks sick!
I thought about this at length and I think I have it. So this ride is 186' tall. It turns left at the top and drops about 50' into a huge flat pan and meanders around until it finally goes into a tunnel for the boring ending. But what if it turned RIGHT at the top and dropped down the side of the hill? Now you have the full 186' to work with. RMC or GCI could have a lot of fun with this. That would leave the big flat pan section open for relaxing activities like knitting classes, gardening, camping or... concerts!
Marineland: we need a coaster
Arrow: Well, we got a mine train 🚂 that does loops
Marineland: sold, but we want it unfinished
I kinda like the flair of this coaster and its surroundings.
I can't stop watching the bogies rattling on the track at 0:43
i have ridden this roller coaster and it was actually my first roller coaster that is like a somewhat major coaster i was like 5 when i first rode it
Wow this looks like a cool coaster
It's almost as if Arrow Dynamics were to go on vacation soon, they were gonna get paid anyways, and so they just threw something before they all went on break.
This coaster's lift hill is very similar to Boulder Dash's lift hill. Boulder Dash also has a lift hill built on the side of a mountain and thus doesn't look as tall as it actually is. Although this coaster doesn't look quite as thrilling as Boulder Dash, since Boulder Dash is a faster ride that does a better job maintaining it's speed.
Weirdly, this ride is actually much taller and somewhat longer than Boulder Dash. (Boulder Dash is a world-class great ride, though, undoubtedly much better than this one, though I haven't ridden Dragon Mountain.)
This is a really cool coaster IMO, it's too bad that it's missing so much of the theming. I would say that awkward dip in the helix was probably there for a reason. Perhaps a near miss with one of the dragon props? I'd like to ride this one some day.
This looks so unique! Are you and Logan doing a Christmas meet up like you did last year at Dollywood this year?
When are you releasing your top 20/ top 25 roller coasters? It's already getting towards the end of november.
I dig it… it’s like a more intense theme park train ride? You meander through the park but there happens to be inversions ?
I remember going on this with my dad, I was crying and screaming while he was laughing at me...ahhh good times☺️
I was probably 8 and wanted to go on it so badly, but I was 1/2 an inch too short. Bawled my eyes out, I wanted to ride the dragon ride so badly! Sadly I've never been back despite living, like, 45 minutes down the QEW. I'm hoping to get out there next year just to ride it.
I rode once as an adult and found it crazy rough. My head kept getting bashed against the restraint to the point that I have a savage migraine by the end. The weird thing was that the straight parts of the track were the roughest.
I think it would actually be terrifying to go through that last tunnel where you're practically going 5 MPH and you're (legitimately) concerned that it will just stop in that concrete tunnel and they won't be able to get you out.
This was the last (complete-circuit) coaster to be the tallest in the world before hypercoasters were invented (it took the title from the Loch Ness Monster at BGW, and it's a lot taller than the Loch Ness Monster, though it looks like it's not as good).
Taylor: It's a memorable coaster because it's so bizarre!
This is truly the most RCT3 rollercoaster in the most RCT3 park ever
I was sure you were ganna talk about the first mid-course breakrun and say how the train is going side to side, it's so weird xD
You should do a video about all of the small parks that we should visit
It looks like something a member of the GP would build in RCT3!
I live in Buffalo, and have been to MarineLand as a kid, never an adult. Sadly, I never got this coaster credit but man, that looks so slow!
i been on Dragon mountain before and funny thing too dragon mountain was my first ever roller coaster lol
This is something I definitely would've built on RCT just to be rediculous.
I rode this around 2003-04 ish and it was so rough it gave me a headache, the head supports were rock-hard, never been on such an uncomfortable ride in my life. It's weird though because by the end of the ride I was still waiting for the actual roller coaster to start, you know? The entrance and the train look so cool that the actual ride is a huge letdown.
Hey Taylor, will a Top 20 Coasters be coming anytime soon?
there needs to be a parody of Dragon Mountain!
I've got some good news.
The last time I was at Marineland they didn't even have this ride. LOL. And to think it's only 50 miles from where I live.
Both the park and the coaster remind me something a RCT or Planet Coaster noob would make.
LOVE IT SO COOL.
Vortex at Kings island shuffle's alot too
It’s Tennessee Tornado meets The Ultimate. What’s also strange to me is the fact that the big helix takes place *inside* the rockface facade. I mean, I could see the designers wanting people off ride to see a mountain, but isn’t it even *more* important that the people *on* the ride get the full experience, the full illusion? Instead, the riders see the *back* of the rockface facade, as if they’re taking a backstage tour instead of riding the headliner attraction at the park. Weird.
StamfordBridge Well this ride was supposed to have a LOT more theming. All of the straight sections were supposed to have theming elements to it, but they were never built. Weirdly in 2006 the park said they would finish the theming, but for whatever reason they never did.
Joshua Cooper Yes, I read elsewhere in this comment section that the coaster is essentially unfinished, and that would explain a lot of its weirdness.
What that reminds me of is Disneyland's Matterhorn when it first opened (eventually they turned the interior into themed tunnels, but originally, you were just riding around in this big open space inside the facade).
you should review powder keg at Silver dollar city. it's also very weird
If been on it it was so fun
I'm wondering if this could be a gateway to get somebody used to Looping coasters
I love that ride
This was designed using RCT3
I want to ride this!!!
WOW so, more than half my life ago, I got on this coaster- and my restraint refused to go down. I started panicking on the incline hill given the ride's inversions. The coaster stopped, they got my restraint down, and after the ride, a manager was immediately waiting for me & my father to give us a ride to wherever we wanted while making up some terrible lie of an excuse about how they were testing the ride's safety mechanisms (with live passengers!?)
Cool 😎 👍
taylor, do top 10 weirdest coasters that youve ridden
Can you touch the branches on some of those trees? ;)
its actually good if your back hurts often. at least those people can still say i can go on a roller coaster . and its good for first timers
This looks like Beast + Flashback (sfmm), Rattler, and Tennessee Tornado.
My favorite ride
Add a launch on the hill and in the straight section and it could from a 5 to a 9.
I went on this yesterday
I have a feeling I ridden this, but I have no idea if I have. I have been to the area it's in and remember being at a place with a dragon/cave roller coaster, but I don't know if this is the one. I have a big feeling I have ridden this, but I have completely no idea. I'm confused?
They built this to compete with Canada's Wonderland (and its name is likely no coincidence, since Wonderland's best rollercoaster at the time was Dragon Fyre). They tried to do way too much with the theming.
my first roller coaster
How weird would it be if Morgan redid the Coaster to make it a hypercoaster like they did to Steel Phantom?
Looks like it was made in RCT
When I was 12 I absolutely loved it! But because the coaster shakes a lot, I had a major neckache
Couldn’t move my head for like 3 days
Marineland is huge and has so much potential with the hilly terrain but theres just nothing there
Came here from a "Marineland is the worst theme park in North America" video 🤣 such a strange ride
